Summer League Practice | Jordan Ott | 7.8.2024
Jordan what has uh your first impression been of Jaylen Tyson JT yeah you know just getting here last week and uh seeing him up close and personal his size you know his size sticks out his energy his Spirit um you know he comes in just feels like a more mature or veteran uh type of player so very excited to see him can do a little bit of everything especially on the perimeter um summer league we’ll be able to play him a different positions just because of the size and summer league is a little different so yeah super excited to see what he looks like even over the course of two weeks where he’s going to have the ball in his hands probably a little bit more so yeah JT’s been very impressive early whether it’s him or the other guys as a coach going to summer league what are you evaluating what are you looking for I think we kept it pretty simple you know we’re here to get better you know so it’s not only the players but it’s us we’re all in in different roles uh right now so I to be the head coach for a couple couple weeks but we’re all just trying to get better so we’re all trying to learn the system I’m trying to learn them and I think we tried to open up some lines of communication early you know when you’re a young player in this league coming from college a lot of times your voice can be not heard as much and you know we’re all here partnering to try to get better to try to learn the system in five practices so we’re all trying to be here and get better for you personally what was appealing about this situation that made you want to come here alongside Kenny well obviously Kenny we’ I think I’ve known him for 12 years now so I’ve been in the NBA for 11 seasons and he was there in Atlanta when I started um was able to go with him to Brooklyn it’s pretty unique to still be in touch or work for work with someone over that long period of time so that was number one for me um right off the bat and then obviously being in the midwest being from the Midwest knowing the success of this place had a few Runnings with these guys when I was in Atlanta um so that and there’s just ties there’s just ties here and you know the people here and you definitely feel it when you when you come here um that this place has been at a high level for a long time still flashbacks to J.R Smith and channy Bri bang in a bunch of Threes Kevin Love I felt like it was a bunch of Threes in the one Series where we we couldn’t find an answer you’ve gotten to be around these guys kind of as soon as you got here the summer league head coach how helpful is that to kind of get as soon as you get here acclimated with the guys that you’re going to be around for a majority of the Season yeah I think it’s great it’s a great opportunity right like kind of First Impressions uh be there when they come into our our system our organization you know we talked the first day was there’s some you never know where this relationship will take so obviously you have the roster players but you have some guys where you may touch him see him be around them for two weeks and not see him again for a couple years um someone I ran into this year was is duab who I coached as an assistant on the summer league team in Brooklyn and then all of a sudden I see him get an NBA contract play on an NBA floor after the game he comes over to me so summer league is unique I love it uh third year is the time I’ve been third time I’ve been the head coach three different organizations and I love it I would do it every year um it’s pretty cool to see these guys rise from this to wherever their path takes what have your initial impressions of Amman been EB so being I was in Michigan for seven years so uh seeing EB from afar for so many years and then seeing where his career is gone um we have a really close connection Mike Garland who grew up in the same or he was from the same area where where grew up eveve and I just talked about Michigan State coach ISO and today like during practice so e we know the talent you know he’s been great um to be around his energy his eagerness to learn it’s a great opportunity for him but it’s also a great opportunity for us to continue to be around them put our hands around them make sure he knows hey eie we love you we love just the progression you’re at and U I’m really excited to see where it goes how can a guy in this environment Jordan stand out to you as a coach yeah real simple we kept it pretty simple you know we got to play the right way um be a great teammate and then we’re all here again just to get better and these roles may be slightly different than what it would look like on an NBA roster but those three things not only translate whenever your time is in Cleveland but the other 29 teams everyone wants to see those players know we see the playoffs where you have a bunch of guys out there making the right play and that’s kind of where the game is going there’s so much variety there’s so much Randomness to it that if you make the right play consistently enough play hard um and obviously have some talent that you have a spot in the NBA you got up your experience how has summer league helped you develop as a coach in your position yeah tremendously I think uh just getting the Reps you know those reps are tough to get in the NBA you know I didn’t take the g-league route uh my my path came a different way and having the opportunity one this this is a rep uh the rep to be in front of the team think like a head coach is a different way of thinking so you hope that those reps then help me be a better assistant for Kenny and uh I also think it’s a different way of looking I get to watch a little bit instead of being in the drills I get to watch a little bit see what I like see how I talk to players in between drill to drill practice to practice even though I’m an assisant coach when I become the head coach of the summer league my words are different to players and realizing what it means to move over to that seat so so these reps are are great what have you seen from Craig Porter Jr as a lead and a veteran for the summer yeah C so CP you know obviously just getting to know him 3 days in had the ankle injury in a regular season and now he’s back full goal playing I think this is his he sees it as his group to really help he you can tell he’s had NBA reps uh he has a way about him he has a confidence about him knowing that he had some success last year in the NBA so it’s the same thing the same thing is EB it’s the same thing for Hunter it’s all of us and me we’re here to get better so um Craig has a way and a steadiness and a mature way of playing and uh I can see that pretty quick and we we’ll helping the best we can over these two weeks are you doing things systematically that that you believe Kenny is going to do with the NBA team this coming season yeah I think we’re trying to figure that that out you know I think I think you heard Kenny say um during his press conference was we’re learning the players so we definitely want to present a way or a style of play but your style of play is dictated by your personnel so we’re throwing out some new things um the Personnel obviously is a little different and uh yeah systematically you’re going to see a little bit of different way of play but uh there’s going to be some things that we definitely carry over from last season

I'm sure he's good, but I'm surprised that he didn't play college basketball. Seems unusual in a coach.
