Wallker Kessler v Zach Edey leads to a fun night. Lauri Markkanen trade buzz

a super fun night at Delta Center kicks off summer league but I’m not sure it’s one that any of the players are writing home about that’s next on today’s edition of locked on Jazz but you are locked on Jazz your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz part of the lock on podcast Network your team every day how are you I’m David lock radio voice the Utah Jazz jazznba Insider this is locked on Jazz your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz on today’s show we’ll get into Summer League last night Utah Jazz against the Memphis Grizzlies ended in overtime in an Elam ending with big matchup between Walker Kessler and Zack Ed we saw keante George put up 30 Isaiah colard Cody Williams Kyle filipowski their debuts in Tyler sensah and Bryce or t Tyler Hendricks and Bryce sensah might have been discombobulated enough to be Taylor sensah frankly we’ll talk about that plus a little bit more news on Lowry as more and more reports come out on that and what did you think of the Elam ending that’s all coming up on today’s edition of lockdown Jazz as I mentioned I Am David lock the radio voice of the Utah Jazz Jazz MBA Insider and this is locked on Jazz it’s your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz giving you insight expertise geeky numbers and hopefully making it way better to be a jazz fan each and every day thanks so much for making locked on Jazz your first listen of the day we are free and available on all podcasting apps as well as on YouTube please subscribe follow uh and uh give us a like button thumbs up if you enjoyed summer league basketball being back in Salt Lake City we are free and available on all podcasting apps and on YouTube thank you for making locked on Jazz your first listen and thank you to all the every dayers out there all right um first off massive tip of the hat to Utah and the fans my wife has lived here now you know we’ve been here since 2008 16 years and still doesn’t get it she’s like did anybody come I’m like yeah lower bowl is sold out she like crazy crazy we’re so used to it uh but it’s amazing uh it was super fun last night great great atmosphere crowd totally into it players played hard uh hope you’re going to get a chance to come out tomorrow or tonight or tomorrow uh only two more days of summer league and it’s going to be hot so might as well come inside uh the headlining matchup was Walker Kessler versus Zach e and the one thing that I think is important about summer leak is understanding the context so I don’t remember who it was last year but somebody Tor Freddy Ferrari or whatever his name was and I was like okay like and everyone got excited I’m like yeah we’re not we’re not getting excited over torching Freddy FR so last night walker Kesler is really the only one last night who played an NBA player a rotation NBA player Zach Ed’s good that’s a nice pick by Memphis he’s gonna I think be able to give him give them about 20 minutes a night and really be valuable Zack l or Jake laravia is a third year NBA Pro who I don’t know is ever going to be an NBA rotation player like it’s it’s getting close to running out I’m not sure what his skill is he’s played 35 games in each of his last NBA Seasons um last year he played a lot because Memphis became a dumpster Fire by the end of the year not you know all the injuries and GG Jackson my boy my guy I love him Tony Jones loves him I I don’t see it he went 0 for 10 from three he’s not an efficient shooter he’s greatly skilled but I don’t I don’t see him as a complimentary player on I see I see the skill I see the length I see the body I see them trying to make turn into a defensive player I don’t want to turn this into Memphis but he’s gonna have to be a complimentary player to other people I don’t know how he’s gonna do that he’s have to learn that so really the only guy last night who played NBA rotation player is AER Kesler I think that’s really really important context to the night and that was I thought somewhat of a standstill Zack e was really good 14 points 15 rebounds Walker was really good 10 points six rebounds 10 five blocks only two defensive rebounds would probably be they also had two steals um they kind of matched each other minute for minute I think um Walker was on the floor for a few minutes late in a quarter when Zack Edy was out and Walker totally dominated that period of time like that was suddenly when Walker was the NBA player against non-nba player and he closed out the rim to close a quarter um but I thought this was I first of all I think Zack Ed is gonna be really good not like really like a but Zack e is gonna be a viable NBA player who is going to be able to take advantage of switches cause certain teams a lot of problems be very good in very in certain matchups his jump Hook is solid his base is awesome his physical strength being up close to him his leg strength his lower body strength is awesome he is not going to be knocked off his spot as we saw on the tip end um he he didn’t look as big obviously around NBA players as he did on the college floor when he was on the college floor he just looked ridiculously like he looked like you know he was blown up bigger than everyone else um but for Walker I thought like that was a good test and I thought Walker dealt with a well the thing was interesting to me is Walker runs well he never outran Edy all night long which is a credit I think to Edie um because I thought Walker was running the floor uh Walker ended the year last year making 14 of 18 free throws which I thought was a really big deal because he gave him some confidence offensively and then he nailed four of his first six free throws and then missed too late so that was kind of a bummer would have been great if he kept that going he had the massive massive two blocks late in the game on Edy in fact one of them the one that gets reviewed probably the most important play of the game um to lead to the well some stops also late but the stops late were Walker in the middle having an impact on the stops late so I thought Walker played really well I don’t think we’ll see him tonight played 33 minutes Oklahoma City roster is not as good as it has been in years past because their regular season roster is really good so I don’t know that we’ll see Walker tonight and I don’t know that we’ll see Walker a lot in Vegas the other thing that I did see that was different about Walker last night was his role in the offense so the Jazz were using him very much the way they do the Warriors used Draymond Green and the Kings used deata sabonis that they’re playing Five out Walker is not a shooting threat so you put the ball in his hands and he’s he’s playing a handoff game he’s got to get comfortable with figuring out whether he’s playing it out of the corner whether he’s playing it to the guy at the top um and he’s playing a handoff game with the guys if we had second Spectrum last night I’d be interested to know how many handoffs he ran it was a lot and then the second thing on Walker last night is his pick setting was way better than it was a year ago I mean he had a mammoth pick on daru that like daru was playing that old childhood game of trying to figure out the elbow bone was still connected to the wrist bone was connected to like right like it was it was much much better pick setting he he used to set picks on his tippy toes as he was floating he was really set um Keon slowed down a little bit to use his picks a lot better so there were a lot of areas there that were a vast Improvement for um for Walker on both playing with the ball in his hands having a role offensively jazzer playing Five out spacing he’s supposed to be on the weak side get the ball to him and let him play the game um the Jazz early on in the game got into their stuff and then they had a really long stretch where they didn’t and then they got back into it a little bit later none of it looked very comfortable frankly um it looked like a lot of guys who’ gone through a lot of practices who had not played with the lights on and got a little discombobulated in fact the rookies more than anyone else I thought their first half stint was just like you could just see their brains were going a million miles an hour it’s kind of awesome to watch and then they both Collier and Cody uh settled in filipowski who played 16 minutes last night um was set he actually made a really nice pass in the first half on a spin move to the basket gave Walker a dunk and then he made another nice play um in the second half he probably looked the most comfortable right out of the shoot but I thought everyone kind of looked a little bit like little jumpy uh there early in the ball game but overall I thought Walker that’s that that’s the that’s really the summer league night for Walker that’s that’s where the whole summer league was about where is Walker how does he deal with it what he doing I thought he passed uh and I thought he passed well like Ed’s good like he’s not gonna do this if if Walker had dominated the story would have been that Zach Ed’s not good right that would have been the story The sto the story instead is that Zack ‘s good going going to be an impactful NBA player his size is real his strength is real his touch around the basket is real um defensively he’s taking up size on the on the roll teams will space him out a little bit better than the Jazz did last night there’ll be some things where he struggles but Walker handled it and then Walker defended the rim well Ed went seven of 12 but Walker had five blocks last night um and you know I do think on one level I I wish Walker had more defensive rebounds he only had two defensive rebounds last night on the other the Jazz defensive rebounding percentage was 72% which is right on League average so I don’t think it was like they got hammered on the offensive glass last night um and you know there’s the the Marquee play of the night which probably on most of the highlights the two mares one is he gets wedged on the um free throw that zachi ties the game on honestly like Philip housei just gets tossed by Ed’s right hand Philipi is the one who probably has to step in front and cause some problems for Ed there he’s just Ed was too strong and by positioning Walker’s in trouble to start that possession like where you’re standing you’re in trouble and when lvia free throw hits the rim three times it gives Edy enough time like that I I’m just kind of gonna give him a pass on that um you can try to claim he’s supposed to fight him off and hold him and foul him and do some other things but it’s a pretty hard play the other one was where was when Walker blocks Edy Edie gets it back and pack it on him I kind of just thought was awesome by both parts I’m not sure I expect Walker to block him twice on that one I give Ed credit for that kind of explosion and quick reaction that’s not something I think we knew he had so uh really fun night fun fun fun night and if anyone’s writing home about anything I would go with Walker that that was a solid night but Walker’s a third-year pro he should have a solid night against Zach Eevee um so it was good all right we’ll run through the other guys an update on the Lowry market and trade stories those continue to come out we’ll have that for you next we’ll look at Isaiah CER Cody Williams Kyle filipowski Taylor Hendricks and Bryce Sensa Elam ending the last night’s game Target score what you think I thought it was great that’s all coming up as we continue on a Tuesday edition of lock on available on all podcasting apps as well as on YouTube for your second listen to day how about lock on NBA 30 minutes every day recapping all the biggest stories in the NBA and updating you on what’s taking place around the league all the biggest stories from our experts all right um who should we go to next let’s talk about the rookies so I thought Isaiah CER and Cody Williams particularly just looked out of sorts in the first half great great like who cares and by the way I’m not a big like I evaluate Isaiah Coler and Cody Williams in the draft I think I have a pretty good idea who they are as players there’s zero opportunity for them to change their game since they came out of the draft and get ready for summer league zero chance and there’s really zero chance for them to change their game by October just doesn’t have enough time so now during the season if they go to g- League do some things they can work on um and there zero chance to change their body like it’s just a whirlwind so what you’re really trying to see is do the skills that you knew they had coming in still is there anything honestly I’m looking for something bad I’m not I’m just gonna be totally honest like Donovan wowed Us in summer league and you’re like okay like it was great Keon wowed Us in summer league and it was like it was like he was really good last year and then he was okay during the season and I told the story yesterday about Dame Lillard and Josh Shelby like they were the co- MVPs of Vegas summer league one year like just like understand that so when I’m watching as Coler and Cody Williams what I’m really to see is like one on a nerve-wracking thing is there anything that I saw in college that I thought I liked that doesn’t parlay and the answer on that was both of them was no like it was great like Cody Williams is still long Cody Williams still runs beautifully Cody Williams athleticism is incredible the game looks so easy for him the book on Cody Williams is he needs to play harder I get why people say that I think he probably does need to figure out what his next gear is but he just moves so beautifully and so easily and in the flow of the game and the criticism in Colorado is that he acquiesced to Simpson to lampin in the middle and did to Silva I I can see that last night too like he’s not like coming in here and saying like oh this is my show I’m the guy that might happen at some point as the team develops and I think it would probably be one of those circumstances in which you know we have the will hardy story where he says to like the team like you guys all know that Lowry Markin is the best player here right and like Lowry kind of had to hear it too like I think Cody Williams would be that kind of guy that it’s gonna take him some time I’m not sure your to has the game for it he did hit a pull-up jumper on the left side and get a pull-up jumper off on the right side that I didn’t know he had so that was eye opening defensively he slides his feet beautifully he recovered defensively if you recall in some of my if you’re an everyday um your video in the video forms that I did or video breakdowns I did one of the things I really liked about him is that when he got beat he slid his feet and got back into the play every single time I saw that again last night which was nice on an NBA semi- NBA level to see him be able to do that so I thought everything that we saw of C knew that we were getting Cody Williams we saw last night um he’s long he’s lanky he was not impactful um he did hit a nice little shot he I think took A3 and missed it um um I don’t if I remember correctly it wasn’t even a very good one um didn’t go to the free throw line I I didn’t see anything his college game that make me think I I think he could go 300 500 minutes in an NBA game without a free throw this year I I didn’t see anything in his college game that told me he was going to go the free throw line ever um but he had five rebounds in 20 minutes so I thought you know like he’s not scared of contact which is what I also saw unliked on him on Isaiah caller kind of similar like his getting downhill is an elite skill I love the six rebounds and the three steals last night um that physicality of him going in and getting six rebounds or playing in that little mid- free throw area to get rebounds may maybe is something I didn’t entirely know he went two of five on threes two of the threes were just disaster late shot clock bombs so he kind of went two for three on threes and was willing to take it which I thought was cool um I thought coler’s performance if you want to get anyone who’s going to write home about anything last night would be Isaiah coler’s second half performance um that was like if you want like you want me to rank the rookies last night of who I and all the players last night of who I thought had the best night of anyone in regards to expectation I would have said Isaiah Collier Walker Kessler Keon George Cody Williams and then I Taylor Hendricks Bryce sensal and then Taylor Hendricks that if I have to rank them but I like kind of irrelevant and Kyle filipowski I’m not sure got enough chance in there um but CER got downhill every time he wanted to Coler in the open Flor is going to be a force Coler coming in the slots in the open floor in the NBA is going to be a force um I actually love that Coler leaked out a bunch of times in fact the game was one sha Sean Sheldon calls a timeout if you’re not going to go for the offensive re if you’re not going for the defense rebound then then leak out and and push the tempo that way I thought he did a nice job with that we have too many guys last year who if they’re not going for the defensive rebound just kind of lingered on that side of the floor and then we never got any transition opportunities out of it but I mean that box score last night is really solid 14 points six rebounds six assists three steals got downhill threw some nice passes he has no floater game he has no mid-range game but he didn’t have in college so you can’t expect him to suddenly have him now so I’m not like that’s like you know that his free throw shooting he went two for four he shot 62% in college like that’s gonna have to get fixed um but I thought like I remember I’m very was very high on call year like if you go back and listen to some of the pick some of our conversations I discussed like do you take him at 10 probably not do you trade down to get him yeah do you trade up to get him yeah like I was losing my mind on draft night when he was on the board and we weren’t trading up from 22 up to go get Isaiah CER I I don’t know if he’s gonna parlay in the NBA because he does not have a natural jumper he does not have a natural floater there’s so many things he has to learn but that downhill First Step lower the shoulder go to the basket kind of play and balance that he plays on is Elite and I saw that last night um so I thought both those guys really really good all right Lowry Markin and then we’ll get to the seconde players in the Elon ending so yesterday we talked about the trades cooling Mark Stein reiterated that report today so thumbs up on YouTube if you’re glad that the trade talks with Lowry Markin are uh are going somebody said to me I don’t know if I should repeat this you know there’s a lot of NBA people around the arena last night somebody said to me last night that the Jazz front office has the largest you know whats to have turned down some of the offers they’ve gotten right now that the that the offers that have come in for Lowry um are have been significant and that for the Jazz to turn those down they have the largest you got it that they could imagine um but as somebody also said to me on the other end he’s really good and really good players are hard to find in this league so if you have a really good player or maybe you hold him so but that was definitely the buzz and the talk around the arena last night and NBA Personnel people was the Lowry stuff and all of that and the word is that it it has quelled and the word is that the Jazz have turned down substantial offers for Lowry marinin and have you know do seem like the comment yesterday was they’re uncommitted to moving Lowry Markin and that does seem to kind of be the vibe and the feeling of everyone around the league right now um about what the Jazz are doing with Lowry um and that you know that Danny he became the number next next logical player Danny went and took a lot little offers and looks and and things like that at it um and didn’t get what Danny wanted which is matches as we talked about yesterday on the show kind of matches his Mo on things and the Jazz haven’t pulled the trigger um obviously and the league doesn’t entirely think that the Jazz will pull the trigger on at this point but there is really nothing that is holding us back for the next you know 20 days of this this kind of lingering see if somebody box and changes and gets a little nervous um remember Donovan didn’t get moved till later and Low’s extension can’t happen until August but on the other end and we should talk about this more tomorrow um when there’s not as much summer league stuff the Jazz have bypassed a bunch of opportunities to use cap space which means they are definitely holding their cap space to try to use it for an extension seemingly that they’re trying to use it for an extension and um for Lowry and because they there was cap space to be used on D rozan they passed on Miles Bridges they might have been able to do something with um so they’ve they’ve bypassed using their cap space or taking in trade spots with that cap space so they must they have an intention of what they’re doing there all right we’ll talk about the second year players konay George headlines with 30 but five of 21 shooting how do we evaluate that night next as we continue on lock on Jazz Today’s show is brought to you by our friends in there Tommy Paul the American playing Carlos Alvarez later to uh coming up here so all sorts of fun things there and you can get involved in the soccer Euro 2024 as well WNBA lines tonight uh I don’t think the WNBA played last night and uh so I still think that links uh uh Sparks game is the next one on the docket so get over to fanduel.com fanduel.com that’s fanduel.com to get involved in all the action thanks so much for making locked on Jazz your first listen of the day remember locked on NBA 30 minutes every day of all the biggest NBA stories for you boom boom boom quick in out get you up to date and is taking place in 30 minutes or less each and every day on lock on NBA all right uh Keon George has 30 last night so on one level that’s great 19 free throws that’s great look like the best player on the floor that’s great um as I opened the show I said not a night to write home about and the reason I just say that is the shooting five of 21 shooting last night is probably not great I thought that he’s playing like a number one option which is good and he should but I did think he forced a bunch of shots early I think he took seven of our first nine shots and five turnovers isn’t ideal it was interesting to me that Isaiah CER started bringing the ball up and initiating the offense and keante came off the ball for a bunch of things late in that game sea Sheldon making that adjustment as the game went on I don’t want to overplay that but it was interesting like is Isaiah caller actually more natural at starting an offense than Keon is that cuz Kon is better coming off a pin down to get him where he needs to go rather than trying to beat a guy I don’t know memphis’s guards were in physical using all 10 fouls of summer league on the Jazz guards all night long and causing great problems Bryce sensah turned it over seven times and really late dribble off his foot once late dribbled out of bounds back-to-back turnovers late in the game that were pretty impactful and ended his night um and so there Memphis was super physical defensively and using all the fouls that you get in summer league and it was bothering the Jazz guards Keon just didn’t set his guy up and just beat him a lot of times tried to execute sometimes you just got to beat your guy um and so they moved ker into playing off that I I thought Keon like he looked like the best player on the floor I think his summer I don’t think we’ll see him tonight we’ll probably see him Wednesday I don’t know how much we’ll see him in Vegas he’s clearly you know played 70 plus NBA games and was better than anybody else on the floor last night that that was like abundantly clear um he was setting guys up using hesitation getting to his stuff he’s beginning to get a go-to move which is a left hand trible dive the right shoulder into someone get the contact and get the foul he does not seem to have a floater game right now coming off that angle that line drive Bank shots not very good as shooting inside the paint last night was I thought really poor I don’t look at the numbers um yeah two of 11 um but he also got fouled he went 19 times in the free throw line I mean that’s he’s clearly the best player on the floor if he’s going the free throw line 19 times in a ball game so I’m not like again I just called it a not ride home about night like there just enough stuff where you’d be like okay I really got to work on stuff like I’m not riding home how great I was last night like there’s just a lot of stuff to work on there for for Bryson Taylor I thought last night was a little disappointing but like let’s not overwhelm let’s not go crazy but if we’re just gonna evaluate um you know it’s hard like Taylor’s game is a complimentary game to other players I don’t think Taylor’s gonna be the most like Dynamic skilled impactful player on an NBA floor probably in his career like I think he’s he’s a complimentary player who can have a secondary Rim defense who can switch one through four defensively who can hit some threes who can play in the open floor and you know maybe eventually devolve something of a of a dribble drive game off a closeout but that’s probably the extent of of where he is but that’s a good player that’s a really really good player in the NBA I’m not sure that’s a player that thrives in summer league like if Taylor ends up starting and let’s say we start I don’t know what Happ just for the sake of conversation we start keante Colin Lowry Taylor and Walker could be John Collins but just’s go with Walker um maybe that’s where Taylor thrives right he’s coming out of the corner he’s slashing on the wings he’s slashing and he’s in around better players he moves the basketball he’s playing last night’s a little more convoluted it’s not as spaced well it’s not as clean I think Taylor needs a clean game and Taylor got lost in the flow last night he just was running up and down the floor and he was not impactful and he was not in the game and uh we’ll see like it’d be nice if he has an impact but I’m also not sure like it’s one thing to say like well Taylor Hendricks has to have an impact like okay well tell me how like what is it when you say Taylor Hendricks has to have an impact like what would he do to have that impact like he’s not putting it on the deck breeding guy with a crossover spinning and pulling into a 16 foot jump shot on a fadeaway on the left foot fade that’s not his game so his game is a complimentary game where he’s going to be a secondary Rim Defender he’s gonna switch one through four like he’s guarding GG Jackson and GG Jackson had a terrible night like GG Jackson goes 0 for 10 from three and GG Jackson I think has five field goals last night three of which which were six field goals last night three or four which were fast breaks so in a half GG Jackson had one really good move to the basket I don’t think he did much more on Taylor last night so I think that actually might be an okay night for Taylor he did seem you know feckless and unimpactful and then had two really big plays he hits a corner three and then a big Jam in the open court and that’s what he can do like that’s what I think we should ask him to do for Bryce he had this super good little stretch in the second quarter is he looks so different his hair is different uh Sarah Todd report he’s lost 10 pounds and gained a bunch of muscle his body does look a little different he looks you can’t even recognize him like his he’s gone from the rows to his hairs up and the new kind of Cut Above the L ear and high lift in the back and like he’s just totally unrecognizable um and he’s trying to figure out what to do offensively he is a natural shooter that lost his confidence last year and I thought we saw him uh take seven threes and make three of them which was terrific and then he just lost control of the ball a bunch of times turned it over seven times um and um you know so I thought like again but he went three of seven from three and that’s actually what he’s really good at and he had six rebounds in 23 minutes the seven turnovers and seven fouls it’s bad he and Jake laravia were going head-to-head Loria is pretty close to an NBA player loria’s just driving at him putting his shoulder in him and drawing contact UM and Bryce got frustrated uh but I actually thought like if we go back to kind of the Cody Williams Isa call like what what can Bryce do Bryce can shoot it and score it offensively and he’s fixed his body a little bit like actually thought I saw all the things you want to see out of him so while the night wasn’t great and the Seven turnovers and the two turnovers were loud late um I don’t think I would call like let’s not overplay it but um all right final thing was the Elon ending I just thought it was amazing the I I I I would love it if the NBA would go to this I think I’d actually love it if we go to in every single game it’s a better Fan Experience and the Elam ending is a fixed score ending we tied at 90 we went to overtime hit it to 97 whoever got the 97 first win Memphis had two possessions to chance to win the game with all this drama then Keon drives tied at 97 he draws the foul and gets two free throws to win it like actually it was pretty exciting if he missed that free throw it would have been exciting Memphis is now going back the other way to try to win it he clutches up makes the free throw everyone’s like oh you don’t want to end a game of free throws actually I thought it was kind of like those are ballsy free throws um so I love it I wish we would go to it every single game it makes a Fan Experience better the amount of games that just end in kind of a Pitter Pat at the end whereas you always have a game-winning basket you always have a big cheer you always have something I’m a huge fan of this g-league has done it in overtime we should certainly do it in overtime hopefully this is the beginning of the precursor to at least starting it there and eventually I’d love to get to it where you know maybe we just set with five minutes left in every NBA game we The Game Stops and we set a Target score to seven points and if you’re up by 20 it’s going to be a pretty easy target score and we get out of the night early and there’s still a game-winning basket and we finish with don’t have as much garbage time I don’t know how you do it I’d like or you said at the beginning of the fourth quarter but uh I’d love to have Elon ending as a part of our give me a thumbs up if you agree give me your comment section on that I’d love if that’s a part of our fixed score ending because I thought it was just much better than anything we do that is locked on Jazz today thanks very much for tuning if you’re on YouTube we’re 1. It’s alr embarrassing that a 3rd yr player is in the Summer League, the fact that Edey a rookie PUNKED Kessler too?!? Smh & now we’re coping trying to make excuses for him…

Kessler’s a failed project, should’ve sold him last yr

  2. Watching Edey last night reminded me a lot of Yao Ming. If he played in that era he would be a superstar. I think in today's game he will be a great NBA player and could end up being a more offensively skilled Rudy Gobert.

  3. I red in finnish media that Lauri had been texting messages to the rookies and welcomed them. He said that it's important to get bonding with them early.

  4. I was there last night at the Delta Center. It was a great game. I thought we would have won by more but a win is a win. If you go tonight or tomorrow bring a jacket, it gets a little cold in there.
