Atlanta Hawks: NBA Las Vegas Summer League Preview, Zaccharie Risacher, Kobe Bufkin, Mo Gueye (Pt 1)

on today’s show it is part one with my friend Glenn Willis of atl1 29 talking all things summer league from Reay to jerisich to M Kobe buffkin and more all that is coming up you are locked on Hawks your daily Atlanta Hawks podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day Hello friends welcome to episode 1761 of the L on Hawks podcast I am your host Brad Roland coming to you on a this episode as well as subscribing and enabling the notifications to let you know when we are going live or live adjacent on this podcast and as I record this intro on this Tuesday you know 16 episodes or so in like two and a half weeks it’s been very very busy even if the Hawks have not been terribly busy and Today’s Show is actually going be G be part one of two with myself and Glenn Willis so I recorded with Glenn over the weekend before I started traveling if you’re watching on YouTube you’ll know that I’ve now changed locations but this is uh kind of Evergreen but it’s also basically going to be a summer league preview of sorts talking about all the big guns when it comes to Reay and jerisich and moay and Kobe buffkin especially and then uh yeah that’s basically the conversation diving deep into that preparing you for summer league as the Hawks open in Las Vegas on Friday I will be there for that contest PSA though as I’m recording this on Tuesday Bruner Fernando’s contract deadline is now Wednesday for his contract to guarantee that’s July 10th so it’s one of those things that the Hawks either have wave him proactively and if they don’t um they keep him on the roster he becomes guaranteed for the season so that’s a pivot point for sure on the roster we’ve covered that a lot in recent days after the trade for Cody Zeller which I which I broke down in some real detail over the weekend so we’ll see what happens there with Bruno as of Wednesday and uh yeah there we go so I recorded this again before I started uh traveling this weekend but it should all be up to date at this point in time and here we go without any further delay with part one myself and Glenn Willis talking all things leag I am joined once again by a good friend of the podcast Glenn Willis of at29 Glenn how are you I’m good yeah we’re we’re in the period where things might happen and you know and this week feels like more of a this week thing than a today thing but uh nice to have kind of a long weekend to have some space for for kind of paying a little closer attention to things all over the leag yeah and uh I will probably have said this before I bring you in but just to tell everybody I’m I’m recording this a couple days before it’s going to run so keep that in your head I I’m doing some traveling before Las Vegas then I’m going to Las Vegas for summer league purposes Etc but I was I wanted to do a show like this one which is basically talking about the young guys at Summer League ahead of time because uh it’s just a good time to dig in a little bit before they get out there you know once the game start you know this Glenn the reactions will come in hot and heavy if whatever happens in that first game good or bad the reactions will be SW will be Swift on all sides but I also haven’t talked to you in this form since the draft so it’s a good way to kind of get your thoughts on what they did in the draft and then we’ll kind of fold that into summer leag too then we’ll talk about moay and Kobe buffkin a little bit at some point but you know it’s been what a week and a half as we’re recording this podcast since the draft it wasn’t a big shock that they drafted ree by the end it was kind of seeming like it was going to go that way for a while but uh what did you make of that you know you and I have not had had a draft podcast conversation so where was your head at both before the draft and now having I’m sure you knowing you I know you’ve watched more ret even since then so where’s your head at with the ret experience yeah so when people would ask me number one like to do a help do a mock draft like pick for the Hawks or just ask me just in conversation I had always said for me this draft pick positionally is going to tell me a lot about how they feel about a con that’s my personal feeling right if they go Wing I think that suggests that they want to prioritize kongu potentially is their starter for the next whatever number of years there’s a lot of things that still have to shake out on this roster right now at the center position to really kind of know what that’s going to look like but to me that suggests I don’t want to say makes clear makes certain but to me it suggests that a kongu is trusted to kind of grow into a bigger role there’s a lot of clinging noise like all over the place right and and perhaps if the Hawks could have traded back that something they would have done and the opportunity just didn’t materialize I guess I guess we’ll never know um but I mean you have to tip your hat to Jonathan gavone who’s saying all along it’s gonna be Reet and you know and once again like in half of the mocks I participated in I took Reay because when you look at last season perhaps problem number one was no no defensive size on the wing no defensive size at the point of attack of you know especially with all the time that Hunter Miss didn’t really have kind of anything else for that and Reet has that kind of physical template to potentially kind of be that kind of that kind of Defender um but it’s interesting you know you you did say I think you do have to go back and do a deeper dive now the Hawks re I mean I I did due diligence up front but I was looking at him plus a number of other guys now he’s you know drafted by the Hawks and depending upon who you read what you hear who you hear talking about him some people suggest his offensive ceiling is hard as defensive ceiling right and so that’s going to be interesting to me to kind of see how that shakes out but but to me the I think he’s uh you know on paper a fit and a gap serious Gap they had last year and I had said for weeks heading up to the draft I see some risk with him in a number one overall pick like if the shooting doesn’t really fully kind of come along if the some amount of self-creation doesn’t eventually show up this is this could look like a guy who like makes the general people think he was first overall like in his draft class you know that kind of thing but at the same time I thought the Hawks proved a lot last year in the Player Development cut department and and I think that makes me feel more hopeful that he can hit perhaps a higher potential outcome than he might if he were playing in in Hawks organization that was quote not doing development yeah that’s true uh no it’s it’s really interesting and obviously I think everybody probably knows this by now but like there wasn’t a consensus the one thing you’re right about you know gavon was on ree early but I still think that people were kind of rolling their eyes throughout the industry about how much he was ass sering that the whole league was on ree sh number one which was just that was not true that was not true it just wasn’t but at the same time he was obviously in the mix the whole way through um and honestly you know part maybe this is wishful thinking I’ll admit to that despite you know my brand is kind of being objective and trying to be as I watch more as I look more I kind of see it more and more you know it’s one of those things especially in this draft um where there again I don’t I say this all the time there wasn’t a guy that I was like oh definitely number one overall pick I think the research he checks so many boxes and opens you up you mentioned aong earlier I still I still don’t know what recording that’s what the plan is at Center but it is what it is like if you can get a wing it makes especially a big wing it just lets you do a lot of different things it you you’re not you’re not as married to what you have to do for instance like I think you know Clan have been a reasonable pick there it been it’s high for him but if you draft Donan Kling and you become a team that is built a certain way like he’s a certain kind of big and a lot of times the center dictates how you build your team in some ways um especially a guy you invest that much in you know your backup can be different all that stuff but for a certain amount of minutes every night you’d be playing the kinging style um SAR is different of course but yeah I I really like Reay as a prospect um I’m prone to liking guys like Ray I think you me the guys that kind of do the little things like he’s already defending at an adult level you know I had Tyler on recently your uh regular co-host at H and 29 along with along with Kevin and we’re talking about this a lot on that conversation but you know he just does a lot of things like an adult you know what I mean like he he’s he just played at a high level and yes it was in Europe and not everybody’s watching those games all the time but it’s a it was he was playing against Real competition in in the flow of a scheme like he was not playing Prospect ball for lack of better term actually jurisich was playing much more in a prospect style which we can talk about if you want to like that team is kind of built toward developing their prospects it was him and topic on the same team ret was playing as a part of a cog on a team that was trying to win basketball games and that was their goal uh and I think he fit into that really well and that doesn’t like sell people that don’t care about the little stuff on him but if you the combination of doing the little things well and also being a 69ine way who can shoot and defend like that it’s pretty appealing package uh I know that we’re all repeating ourselves but there it’s part for the course here and one of the reason I wanted to have you on was to talk about what we might see from him in summer league because I made this comment to Tyler I want to know if you agree with me he does not strike me as a summer league player and I don’t mean that in a bad way I I just think that a lot of summer league and you watch as much as anybody of this stuff uh you are the guy who’s trapped in the gym in Vegas when every everyone else is trying to go home and or go go go back to the strip and Glenn’s just watching every single G he’s an absolute Maniac but all every game yeah uh so I say that does that make sense to you like I I just don’t think that he’s necessarily the kind of guy who pops there because it’s usually like the on ball guards end up popping a lot the shot creators and that’s not really what he’s supposed to be but maybe I’m wrong what do you think today’s show is brought to you by better help I think on some level we all compare Our Lives to the people that are around us in our daily lives and as they say though comparison is the thief of Joy well it might look like people are having it together on Instagram or wherever else the reality is they probably don’t therapy is helpful for everybody it actually help you to focus on what you want instead of what others happen to have then it lets you start living your best life you can learn positive coping skills and how to set boundaries with better help I know have my own stresses sometimes when it comes to work and the future Etc and we can all benefit from getting stuff off of our chest every once in a while if you’re think about starting therapy give better help a try right now it’s entirely online it’s design to be flexible and convenient to your schedule and that’s really huge especially if you’re someone like me who’s very very busy and navigating crunches all the time all you have to do is f a brief questionnaire to get ma license therapist and if once you get there switch therapist anytime for no additional charge stop comparing and start focusing with the folks at betterhelp and the place to go is betterhelp.com lockon MBA 10% off your first month with better help one more time the place to go is betterhelp that’s betterhelp.com lockon NBA I think for people who are just kind of caj or generally watching games and and letting the things that jump out at you I think he’s unlikely to do a lot of stuff that jumps out at you right you know that’s not how I watch I want to see like yes the little stuff right the you know and and that’s where like for example last year moay blew me away how well he did the little stuff or just it just blew me away last year it’s that that’s what I’m interested in and I like the way you characterize his role on his team in France because I think that in some ways preps him for you know likely the kind of role that’s end up being shaped for him you know in the NBA as well which is connective player supporting player all all that sort of stuff does that mean he’ll never like develop like one or two skills that are kind of towering strengths for him hard hard to say for sure um but high level connecting glue guys are really really valuable like you know well I think it was the last time we we record ATL 29 I did kind of a quick talk through on the guys who enable the Bucks to win their title the Lakers to win their title the Nugget to win and it was these guys who are not Allstars you know by and large but they do a lot of important fundamental stuff on both ends of the court and that does oftentimes take a team from third or fourth in their conference up to being a team that can can can win a title you know and it’s hard to know with Reet but it’s kind of funny because this morning I was doing more reviewing on jurus hich and the first you have to encounter if if you go look for whole game that he’s played in if you can find that the uniform like you got to get past the uniforms for me first that’s true I agree but uh but it’s like you watch jurus play he’s so incredibly aggressive like he is just so aggressive and so I feel like on this Hawks summer league team is someone just kind oh I’m going to watch the first half of this Hawks versus Lakers game or whatever they’re going to be like what like this guy is so much better than Rish you know and that joke yeah I was thinking about making that joke on with Tyler I’m glad I didn’t because we could save it for now but yeah I’m I’m almost banking on that happening someone’s gonna be like yeah someone’s gonna have that take in the first half of the first game especially if ver is making jump shots because he’s gonna be he’s much more aggressive like you said more he’s more used to playing on the ball it’s gonna that’s going to happen especially or or a combination of that or like moay propaganda will also be happening at the same time but which it should be I understand that too but you’re right it is kind of funny because just the stylistically jur is just much more of a summer league player in that way I feel like yeah I know I still remember the video around when he was talking to Bob Ren and you know our friend Bob Ren and he’s got his arm around him you know and I’m like is Bob safe is this dude is like really AG you know and he seems like the nicest kid where I you know and sort of stuff but he but he just kind of jumps out at you it’s like man this kid is a killer I mean he just wants to like destroy the defender that’s in front of all the time I was joking with someone else this morning that you know we talk about Quinn the 0.5 habit catch the ball when it rotates to you you make a decision to shoot pass or or attack with the dribble attack your closeup Defender and when you go watch his games in Europe it’s like does it does it even get to 0.25 he just goes I mean it’s it’s he’s wired for for that and so for me I think ret is a much more complete player I think he’s a much more refined player right now but it’s one of those things where if you just watch a random five r a random quarter of Hawk summer league play coming up you know next week later this week and next week like you I think I think J is just gonna be the guy kind ofs out of you as like you know and so we’ll get like oh you know and and I mean we we still don’t know if he’s going to be stash this year right I mean that could happen right yeah as as we’re recording this um we don’t we don’t know and you know I’ve people have said every possible thing about that um fans I mean you know I asked Landry I play I even played the audio on the show like I was one like all right is there Chancey stashes him Landry you didn’t say no um part of that’s negotiating like maybe you want to get him on a long-term deal that your agent’s not going to be thrilled all those things like there’s a there’s a back and forth there he could be on a two-way that’s also possible a guy that was drafted in the 40s could easily be on a two-way like that that wouldn’t stun me either so there are really three distinct possibilities with jurisich full contract two-way or stash and you know maybe there’s a roster spot issue but you know no matter what he’s not gonna well I shouldn’t say he’s not gonna he probably isn’t gonna help you at all as a rookie I I can’t imagine he has a super clear path to playing a lot it’s not his fault it’s just the nature of the Beast with a second round pick who is more of a long-term bet but I do like his game quite a bit and I think that he’ll he’ll look good in summer league I’m pretty sure about about that of course some of that’s like does the shot go in but the word aggressive has been thrown around mean and every single person I’ve talked to about about jurus Stitch online offline Etc it’s everybody’s like man his mentality like he just goes and goes and goes and goes and I know the Hawks like that about him he he’s not afraid at all and he’s not a processor that’s slow like he’ll he’ll make the sin of aggressiveness which I think they prefer generally speaking to the to the sin of not laziness but you know what I mean like this to being too laidback or whatever too relaxed and by the way defensively uh the same way and kind of not in great not in a great way I don’t think what I see on film with jurus Stitch I think he might be fine defensively he’s a perfectly fine athlete but I think that he uh over rotates and over like he’s goes for Steals and stuff like that which is correctable but do you see that too does that make sense it does and it then when you read that that’s what Sam Vini called out the very first thing when he’s breaking down his defense that makes you feel like okay yeah I I feel like Sams really knows what he’s talking about and so that supports that view too and and it is just a I don’t remember if sty is a sort of hyperactivity you know just a a motor that’s always going and part of becoming a good player a good fundamental player is knowing when to take it down a gear and and like let the you know the game Flow kind of dictate how you’re kind of jumping into that action uh and then knowing to kind of kind of you know take it up a gear as well and knowing how to kind of control that as part of maturing part of learning the game there there’s a time when your responsibility on the defensive floor is to just be very settled and be very connected and not surprise other four players on the floor by kind of add living or doing something that’s not called for in whatever role you’re in for that def possession and that’s the stuff that he’ll presumably kind of learn and grow into because like if you’re a low man you got to be where you’re supposed to be right and like ending up in the wrong place it throws everything out of whack um and I know that’s one thing that Sam kind of you pointed out in his his breakdown too and stuff like that so so that’ll be interesed to see like how he takes that Co I’m I’m so excited to see him in person right yeah and and see how he takes that coaching and see how that connectivity works and stuff like that and you know and it’s gonna be and I think that I think one of the things that’s so encouraging about this team is just Kobe’s presence like he’s such a leader you know he’s you know he’s really such a leader he showed so much we talked about it a lot last year but he showed so much just persistence last year kind of a rough you know first game and just kind of got better along the way but I think he’s going to help ret he’s going to help jurich he’s going to help M you know and I and I I just think that those guys are going to be really really fun to watch play together and I and to me you look at this this might sound crazy but I think Kobe is the most important player in the summer league roster like how this goes for him is the because he’s the one guy that’s gonna play next year of this group a lot I it well I mean re is gonna play I mean he’s he’s gonna play right but is it as a starter is it like 17 minutes a night off the B you know we it’s hard right now to forecast what his actual minutes kind of allocation is going to be but Kobe is a really important part of the Hawks team coming in 22425 and so to me that’s the most important part of of this is seeing you know where he is at this point in time after all the learning and growth you know we we all know he missed some time last year and but it didn’t seem to really affect him to too much uh towards the end of the year he was you know you know a helpful player um but it I I think this is one of the more fun hwk summer league teams we we’ve seen in a while Today’s show was brought time visit fanduel.com and start making the most out of your summer with FanDuel official working partner of Major League Baseball I was gonna ask you actually about Kobe and his presence because like look he was always gonna play him and mo were written an ink to play in Summer League before the draft so that’s not like a change but it’s Al also what you normally do you know just to kind of go through the progression in summer league outside of the top top top top guys almost everybody plays their second year for a little while like wh’s not wh’s not playing let’s just say that out loud but and neither is Brandon Miller I wouldn’t imagine it’s like there’s a couple guys every year that kind of graduate out after one year but most even first round picks play again in their second year even for even if it’s a couple of games and then you know mo obviously just didn’t play a lot last year was always gonna play um so we knew that but I think it’s huge and it would have been the same thing for a big too I would imagine a different way but to have a returning point guard and yeah Kobe’s more of a combo I get that but he’s played a lot of point guard he played point guard all year last year in college park he played some point guard in the NBA level he played with a guard too but especially in the G League he’s playing point guard a lot they know he knows he knows what the Hawks want from him generally speaking at point guard and to have a real Prospect who’s not a clown you know what I mean like Kobe’s a in summer Le he’s gonna feel like he’s a veteran like he’s gon he’s going to be there he’s gonna he’s he will have been through this before he’s by all by all accounts a guy who’s like super professional he’ll show up and he’ll put guys in positions to succeed and having that at point guard in summer league is really important because of the team I mean you know that’s more than even I do you watch teams that don’t have a point guard in summer league and it is a disaster like you have to have a point guard in that setting that can get stuff going for you especially when you’re trying to um not necessarily showcase but like you’re trying to develop other guys like ree you want to obviously put him in a position to succeed jur 2 m even the the next guy down like miles Norris Dylan Windler all those guys you’re trying to evaluate players and having Kobe play with him a lot makes life so much easier and then of course you want to see Kobe too but just the secondary effects of having a guy that you really trust at point guard who knows your system it kind of can’t be overstated yeah it can’t and and that’s GNA be I think that’s gonna be really big for them I know Hawks fans are like oh could they win could they win the summer league championship and I think I think one I mean you know I love summer league people were like s League’s bad basketball it’s not bad basketball it’s guys who were trying to grow their game guys who trying to add it it can but it’s it’s great watching because I I love watching these young guys who are trying to develop skill and like and I know like year to year like oh he couldn’t do this last year that’s that’s how why I watch it but it’s kind of funny because I think fans don’t realize like I don’t know 80% of the teams are like we only want we only want to play our four games you know say I I almost we get out of here you well yeah I was G I think I said this on the on the quick show I did on Friday after the roster came out and I don’t know this yet like maybe they have a different philosophy this year but in most situations not most I mean sorry not all most teams don’t play their top guys all the way through especially and the Hawks haven’t done that recently they like to get guys time they’re not going to play one and done necessarily but they’re not pushing to win the summer league championship and if you look at the rest of the roster all due respect this is not a this is not one of those some of the rosters that you look at that has like nine 10 guys on it like there was this Houston team was it last year two years ago that was like they had like 10 NBA guys on it it’s this is not that they have four guys that they are trying to develop and a couple more wiler especially will be a really good summer league player compared to most he’s a he’s a pro but like number six through 13 number seven through are not the greatest so if they don’t play all their guys the whole week they’re not going to win the the championship I don’t think maybe I’ll be wrong I’ll be happy to cover a summer leue title Run for the Hawks if they want to go ahead and do this for me but um I’m expecting based on the Cur based on the curve that you normally see it would kind of surprise me especially if like Kobe and Reay play like into game five I might be wrong about that it could change and again I’m not reporting that right now because we’re not in Vegas yet different staff function but last year Quinn was already in charge and they didn’t play everybody the whole week and that’s that’s kind of the usual it is but the other thing that makes you think is like typically teams that are going to rotate guys you’re playing the game one you’re playing like typically they have like 20 man roster they have big rosters and so the Hawks don’t have a huge roster rate yeah 13 right now yeah right so I mean you almost have to play these guys every game yeah so we’ll see what happens I mean also teams can add two or three guys like between now and when the when play actually starts and things like that you so they may add to it but for me I would think like play them every game you know I mean I I don’t want them playing like 35 minutes every game but you know give them give these young guys 20 22 minutes of run each game together on the floor and I think that’s that’s a great approach and they also have no back to backs which is not a given and in fact they have more rest than I’ve ever seen a hawks Sumer League team have they have a day break then they have two days off in the middle and then another day break after that so um I think there’s actually no way they can play a back to back I’m looking at the schedule now to make sure I’m not crazy um no they they could be back to back on the fifth game if they get to game five in a certain way it could be a back toback and that’s when I I would be shocked if guys played game five on a back toback but the first the first four you’re right it’s a great point you made there because like also I think if when you have four guys that are clearly the clearly the guys that you’re trying to look at playing them together a lot makes sense even if you’re not like if you’re trying to win which you’re not that’s not the goal summer league is not trying to win you would probably try to stagger a little bit more but I actually would be in favor of them playing a lot together because that that’s why you’re there you’re trying to get these guys reps together and yeah ret and Kobe are not gonna be playing in the g- League this year they’re not I don’t think but jurus and mo might be there I know people are kind of writing Mo gay and the rotation in Inc I’m not quite there yet with that but jurus is probably gonna be the G league if he comes over at some point um Mo could be at some point too like they’re gonna play together long term you’re hoping long term these guys so getting them reps together it’s not as clean as like you know there was this the famous summer league where Trey and JN played together and that was like the whole reason Collins was there was to have him play with Trey and they even said they were very open with they were like John is playing he’s overqualified to be here but he’s playing because Trey’s playing kind of thing it’s not that clean but I think Kobe and Ray in particular having those guys play together is a good idea yeah it makes a lot of sense and then and when those guys are off I mean having a guy like jco Joiner just you know he’s really solid guy you got a few guys that kind of just help you run your offense and all that sort of stuff so so so yeah it should be fun and you know I’m excited to see all these guys I’m excited to see you know what position moay is playing you know they they typic last year they played pretty small lineups all the way through um they have a little a little they have a little little bit of size on this roster that’s a little bit different but that’ll be interesting to see and then um and then also like re re is at all off ball stuff or do they let him run a few pick and rolls do they let you know do they let him run a little stuff that’s that’s fascinating to see same with jus Jus can you know I think it’s okay I’ll do whatever you ask you know I and I’ll do 100 miles an hour you know that kind of thing and then and then also just just the defensive kind of Stu I mean you don’t look for in these young guys like guys that are like high level Defenders what you’re looking for is some habits some consistency and a lot of that game to game it’s cleaning things up 10% from a game one to game two and then 10 more 10 more percent from game two to game three and that’s the value of kind of going and watching you know live for me like game to game to game to game is seeing that stuff just get cleaner and cleaner cleaner and I know that’s not what most fans watch for you know uh but that’s what that’s to me what I look for and like that’s that’s what like I said not to rehash it completely but all the little stuff Mo was doing last year that I watched him play last year and I was like this could be a real like connective player in the league if can kind of get the other skills to kind of come along and be stable enough because you know you you saw him play at Washington State and I saw him play a few times live at Washington State because of where I live and they were letting him like create an isolation and it’s like okay pretty sure that’s not going to be a thing for him but he just he bought into the role I mean and it’s kind of funny because you you you go back to the comments re made in his media availability you watch moay play you watch watch Kobe play and it seems to me from an acquisition standpoint a drafting standpoint the Hawks are prioritizing guys that will play the role they’re asked to play right and not have this really firm idea and and again Alex SAR I I don’t know if it was his words or stuff his agent was putting out to make it sound like no we want like a a prime feature role for Alex and where ret was I just want to help my team win and again it’s not it’d be completely unfair for anyone to say Alex har is this or alexz you know has a fixed idea I don’t
