Do the Nuggets have a ‘fat clause’ in Jamal Murray’s contract? | Stokley & Josh [denver sports]
I actually get why Jamal would be a little bit offended by that if I’m him and I put myself in his shoes and I go we just want a a bleep an NBA championship and I was the second biggest piece behind us winning an NBA championship I understand why a younger guy would be uh a little bit offended by that do you understand that part of it you you’re you’re the player right you’ve had to deal with these kind of situations and negotiating big contracts in Pro Sports so if I can put myself in shoes I can understand why he might be offended or disrespected if you will if there is a weight clause in this contract yeah I mean I understand it uh certainly if you’re the player and you you got drafted here uh seventh pick first round and you’ve been a really good player you end up winning a championship here and uh you’ve already signed one contract and now you know you’re you’re signing a$ 200 you know plus million dollar contract and you would think that it would be pretty easy and pretty simple that um this team really wants you right the Nuggets really want you uh back and but there’s just something in there that um shouldn’t be in there and so I I understand from a players perspective why you would be a little bit um maybe pissed off maybe a little bit F felt a little bit disrespected um whatever the case may be but also understand from the team’s perspective why they would want to put something like that in the contract I mean he’s 27 so you know he’s not getting any younger still young but not getting any younger and if this is the case I mean we don’t have I mean we’re speculating here right yeah I mean we don’t know for sure um that this is what’s holding up the contract um we’re just speculating here that if it is a weight Clause um or or some kind of workout clause or whatever the case may be I could understand from the team’s perspective you look at his situation you look at the team calling him out last year at the end of the year talking about his health talking about trying to figure out how to get his workouts better and uh stay in shape for the whole season well something is up there right if you are saying that to one of your best players at the end of the year to the media that means uh I wonder what they’re saying behind closed doors so I um I I could imagine that they are probably uh fed up with Jamal and his conditioning and staying in shape and sometimes you get injured but if you’re not doing all the things that you need to do to stay healthy then I understand from the organizational from the from the from their standpoint that they’re frustrated here and we’re offering you 200 million but there’s some things that you need to do right so they’re trying to protect themselves a little bit which I understand and I also understand from Jamal’s perspective why he might be a little bit upset by that and you know like like we talked about after the ACL they said he was cleared he just wasn’t mentally ready um and then at the end of the season this year they called him out about his conditioning and now you have this on top of it if this is the case I could understand why he would be frustrated yeah I mean look there there’s there’s been several things and I’ve talked about this a bunch it’s why I’m hesitant to be hey just willing to give Jamal Murray all this money I’m encouraged that the team put a clause if that’s what this is again speculation on all of our parts but that’s where all the the rumors and reports are leading us to um they should protect themselves he is a huge reason that they won the NBA Championship but Stoke he is also the reason that they’re not or were not playing for an NBA championship this year and and I’m I’m willing to debate and argue that with anybody that wants to argue it yeah he had three moments in this playoff run how many games did they play and you want to identify three moments he had a legendary playoff run a year ago which led to an NBA championship he’s only played 60 games or more once in the last five seasons so that’s not good enough you want to be a superstar in the NBA and I know Joel embiid kind of has that same Mo right but we knock him for that we look at his MVP award as phony and fugazi because who he is and not being available the way he is Jamal Murray has that same problem he’s not available just as much as Joel embiid is not available we just don’t hold him to the same standard because he’s not the true Superstar of the Denver Nuggets so I I am full on team Denver Nuggets for having some sort of stipulation in this they need to protect themselves from a player that has been unreliable and inconsistent in the matter in the moments that matter the most he was great winning a championship and I don’t know if I made this argument with you or to will one day when he was filling in for you Joker’s Batman Jamal’s Robin so in the last four seasons all showed up once in the postseason you know played the way that he can play and been available the way he can be available when he’s fully healthy and they won an NBA championship that year if Batman had Robin by his side fully healthy 25% of the time well he’d lose a lot of the fights and Gotham City would be burnt to the ground like being available at the rate that Jamal has been available is flat out not good enough and I I can separate those things from what he did to help the team win a championship a year ago it’s now about moving forward and getting back to a championship and if Jamal doesn’t Elevate and take this thing a little bit more seriously well then they’re never going to win another NBA championship well I think we you know the championship thing that’s that’s old news it doesn’t matter you know we keep bringing it up and talking about it but that’s that’s two years ago I mean that’s that’s a lifetime ago they’re not paying him for that they’re paying him for what he’s what’s he what he’s going to do in the next four years that’s what they’re doing so yeah he he had a good Championship run there um two years ago but you know it’s it’s time to turn the page on that and you know you you’re looking at this contract and I think from the Nuggets perspective there there’s concern there there has to be concern there if they have some kind of Clauses in the contract and that’s what’s holding up I mean I mean there might not be what what if what if there’s nothing holding it up what if that’s not the case what if it’s just the mall holding this up and everything is fine but he doesn’t know if he wants to sign it I mean we’re speculating here so we can go all over the place you know is it is there a weight Clause Is there a workout Clause uh is there nothing and Jamal just doesn’t know if he wants to sign it right now so you know we’re here just throwing stuff to the wall because we don’t know why and it’s it’s it’s really curious because you know I don’t know if someone had a $200 million contract in my fax machine I think I would run over there and sign it pretty quick right like first thing that I would do exactly I mean um so like why why isn’t he signing it um and why hasn’t he signed it he’s playing basketball right now so he’s he’s putting himself at risk playing for Team Canada and so you would think that there’s something there that they’re not on the same page uh I think that I think we could all probably agree on that um but what is it is there something in the contract or is Jamal just like man y’all taking too many shots at me I don’t like what y’all did a couple years ago after the ACL I don’t like how y’all called me out at the end of this season um I’m just I’m just not going to sign it right now so what the ACL thing is interesting to me because you mean them saying he was cleared and then he still didn’t play kind of putting it all on him yes okay yeah you know making him look bad instead of just saying hey you know we don’t feel like it’s a right time for Jamal we’re still working through them through some things here trying to him trying to get him back completely healthy right when you do that and you say those things all of a sudden everybody’s looking at the player like dude your knees healthy what do you mean you got to get over the mental hurdle what just get out there and play basketball it’s been over a year right what are we doing here like how long do you need so you could have taken that away from him yeah and um very easily just by the words that you say and they didn’t do that so as a player I would be upset by that yeah man I I could understand that aspect of it I also say this is I think going back to that ACL moment and uh I I was told by a couple of different people that it was dad’s decision to not play it was uh Jamal’s father that made that decision to not play and then Jamal obviously ran with it and I would say this maybe it’s because he doesn’t look like Usher right like tarant he gets all the spotlight John Mor’s father because he looks like Usher and it’s a fun cute story for ESPN an ABC to run with um but I I think there’s there’s something there with Jamal and his father I I think I don’t know it’s a slippery slope but I I think he’s too involved uh and I think he gets to make more decisions than he should about his son’s future his son’s future earnings uh and maybe maybe the circle is growing a little bit too much at the time you know what I’m saying yeah I don’t I don’t know the situation you see Jamal’s dad around a lot right you see him at halftime come down and Jamal goes over there and they talk or before the game and um so you see him um there uh obviously and um but I I don’t know the Dynamics there you would know more about that than I do I um you know I is it is it a bad thing to have a dad that’s looking out for your best interest I mean I I would say most of the time no but sometimes it can be a little bit too much right um too much influence there so I I’m I don’t know a helicopter parent thing yeah I mean that that that could be the case but it’s worked out pretty good for him so far and it it will be interesting to maybe um find out you know once this thing is over uh I can’t I can’t see Jamal going through this season uh not signing that extension I mean he’d be a fool to do that you you just said it he’s playing the Olympics the guy’s injury-prone you’re going to go play basketball at the highest level in the world and say no to $210 million guaranteed I think it’d be foolish on Jamal’s part and I think it’d be foolish on the Nuggets part to Cave if there is some sort of stipulation and clause in this
