Landry Fields Makes The Atlanta Hawks Unpredictable

Landry Fields Makes The Atlanta Hawks Unpredictable

I don’t know what Landfield was talking about this is the Atlanta Sports Party part of locked on Sports Atlanta on the locked on podcast Network your team every day welcome into the Atlanta Sports party your home for the best Atlanta Sports Talk it’s local Insight you can’t get anywhere but right here at Lon I’m your host tanra batist alongside me are jvis Davis and Maria Martin our Atlanta Sports party is part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day so number one versus number two have their first tilt on American soil Friday and the Braves might just be on their way to figuring out the fit spot we’ll talk about that but first let’s talk about what was or wasn’t said at emry Sports Complex Landry field spoke to the media Wednesday for the first time since Deonte Murray was traded Maria you asked Landry how difficult it decision it was to make considering that he made the trade for him just a few years ago and Landry said quote new context with a cap environment and how you’re able to build out the team and you’re looking at what assets you have for the future good players like Deonte don’t come around very often especially available at the time that he was it was our evaluation and I think it was a great collaborative effort for all parties involved and that’s where we landed so Maria do you feel like Landry actually gave you Insight that you were hoping for and why the decision was made to move on from DJ I think that’s a good question and and the reason I phrased the question the way that I did was because of the fact that they traded for him just two short years ago and remember it was a blockbuster trade and so we’re all thinking that this is going to work out as was the front office I’m sure otherwise they wouldn’t have done it and so I phrased it that way because while it is a business and the NBA just gets rid of players and brings players in it’s just how it works any professional sports league is like that those decisions are very so I think that he was at least honest in saying you know what players like Deon don’t come around very often I’m glad that he did say that however he didn’t really give us any more than that whether it was he he was also asked and I didn’t ask this question whether or not he believed it was a failure he kind of danced around that um and didn’t kind of give a direct answer to that question so I thought he could have given me a little bit more although I do think he was at least honest in saying a player like Deonte Murray doesn’t come around very often but kind of admitted that it didn’t work out in saying you know we evaluated this is not working out and where we want to be so it’s typical general manager speak in the way that they can dodge questions and say a lot of words and not say a ton of stuff with context but I was okay with the way that he answered it yeah okay Jaris what about you did you feel like Landry’s answer to Maria’s question gave you just a little bit more insight into why the Hawks ultimately decided hey we’re gonna move on from DJ I feel like he Landry that question you know what I’m saying like I I didn’t get anything from his answer right because and that’s and that’s how I feel every time he opens his mouth that’s how I feel when when when he talks about basketball when he talks about this team because he has plenty of opportunities to just to give us a little nugget and he just goes in and snatches that mug away you know like taking a ky taking a piece of of food from a baby’s mouth I’m just like man give me something but I I think overall I would have been fine with him saying you know what he and the he and try young just didn’t work out it wasn’t it wasn’t a good parent like you said players like that don’t come along like that players like Deonte Murray don’t come along like that but we just understood that this this pairing didn’t work and that’s why that’s why I get concerned that’s why and that’s why I get concerned about this right now and and how this team has been run and how this organization is going to move going forward because he doesn’t make definitive statements about the decisions they make right like if you know that that was a mistake that you made there is a way you can say that from a general manager spe like Maria mentioned and and and it not sound like you still don’t quite know what you’re doing I I don’t know if that making sense right now but I really feel like Landry is it just in a space where he intentionally says nothing and every time he has a chance to try to give us something as to far as far as where this team is going he just he just botes it every time yeah I feel like just a little bit more context like he said new context with a cap environment what what does that really mean and granted he could have said hey we have challenges with the first apron and the second apron you know there are ceilings that we can hit that were going to be a challenge for us in trying to build out this roster then that gives reporters an opportunity whether on TV on radio in print to say XYZ by the way this is what he means by an apron like that’s easy but tell us just say it because most other GMS and presidents of organizations quite frankly have said it and I think that might be what the challenge is here like just that one little extra ad right there just gives a little bit more into oh that might be also why they’re not active in free agency it just gives a little more meaning to it when you say new context will then tell us new context but we we understand the rest of it we understand that players like DJ don’t come along not just as good as he was but at the time that he did and we understand that when he says collaborative effort even that he could have added ever so slightly just to say and when I mean that hey we’ve been attempting we’ve been trying to be active in these last few seasons and sometimes you the partnership opportunities don’t come that was one situation where we actually had a partnership where it made sense so we made the best decision at that time right there I think you just answer all of the questions in just a little bit more of a definitive way but miraculously without saying something that would then give us reason to say h I just wish he would have said just a a little bit more you know one thing that I thought was really interesting is the final question um that was asked today was what do you want to see from your guys during summer league and he said that’s a great question and it was the only one that he did that to and it was just kind of like okay did you not want to answer the other questions that were presented because they were a little more poignant in terms of the status of the team and yes of course we’re all concerned about what the guys bring to the table in summer league that’s what the press conference was called for in the first place but they happen to trade away to jeon maray so these questions have to be asked so you know it is frustrating the only reason why I’m okay with it is because I don’t have expectations for anything else and so you know I I’m okay with the way that the answers are given only because I know when are we ever going to get another nugget like we would with maybe Alex anthopolos or and and not to compare but it’s just those are the comparisons that you have in the market that there are other general managers that actually will be forthcoming in a way you can’t give up you can’t show your hand you can’t tell people what you’re doing we understand all that stuff but there is just a there’s a way to say things without saying them a little bit more than what he is yeah I I think he I I think you’re spot on Maria because here’s the thing look at the roster like it just got a a bunch of guys at Center you that that that that position that that front court is loaded right now so what are you going to do with all those guys he told me that was a question for another day I asked why we’re in free agency still last time I checked right like can you still make a trade you know so see that’s the type of stuff I that just made me feel like you’re not confident in what you’re doing and and I granted Landry you know this is his first stint as a a general manager I get that I understand that process there there’s a filling out process and you want to try to surround yourself with with people who you know who have been in that seat before and last time I checked theis general manager is ky corver you know he left the roswe four or five years ago you know so it and what is his experience what is this who are you leaning on in in these moments is it Nick wrestler you know or or is it Tony wrestler Who Who Are You leaning on to to make these decisions to to to be able to go through these press conference and not be frustrated because everybody’s asking about dejonte Murray and and where is Trey young going to be in the next year or or next two years you know so those are valid questions it just seems like I know we talked about a lot but that direction of where this team is going by the moves you make you are making these moves so that’s why these questions are coming so I I think that there’s a better way for him to handle it and it’s just unfortunate that that we have to kind of just deal with it just this just SS and they all out of questions because you’re now 10 days removed from the start of free agency and you’ve watched the Eastern Conference the top of the conference get better and better and even the middle of the conference has gotten a bit better and some have stood Pat but in a good way like Boston they they could stay back because they’re the Champions but even you saw the net wave the White Flag T the net said you know what hey hey y’all come get these Wings whoever we need first round picks and all that stuff like if we gonna do that just do it so you saw the top say hey we can stand Pat or you saw that the second two in line the Knicks and the Sixers say that we know we’ve got to do this and every move they gunning for the Celtics but to your point and then You’ got the Middle where The Magik is saying hey we think that we can be better than the Pacers or better than the Cal so here’s what we’re going to do to get there and then like you said we got the seller dwellers the Nets and also the Bulls who said okay bye because we’re just going to tank so we’re going to admit we’re resetting I think that’s also that frustration with not answering Maria’s question about kind of where do you go from here because free agency is still 10 days in and we haven’t gotten anywhere real quick before we wrap up want to talk about that Trey Young Piece as well because again invariably Jarvis because we’ve not had a chance to talk to Landry Fields since the dejonte trade of course the trade question was going to come up on what the roster was going to look like moving forward with Trey young Landry’s answer but this is the wait I’m sorry we have a lot of value in tre let me start there yeah a lot we had a lot of value in deante but this is those moments where you have to make those hard decisions so you know from there on we will continue to build and so I asked once again Jour did Landry answer that question not only no but hell no he answer that question he did not he did not answer that question because here’s the thing that’s one of those moments where I said he had an opportunity just to give a Slither he didn’t have to say he’s going to be around for the foreseeable future he have to say any of that all he could have he could have put a period on that sentence we had we had the same value in tra I in deante what so do that mean Trey young is is next to be traded I’m like so what’s the messaging can we get some good messaging like you can blow smoke up behind and and and that’ll be okay with me I just know that smoke is being blown up my behind but when you just sit right there in the middle it’s just like that’s the that’s that’s that’s just frustrating to me I don’t I don’t even know what to do with with that statement because it’s just it’s nothing it’s absolutely nothing obviously that’s where it took a turn because he was fine when he finally came out and said look we have a lot of value and trade those are words that we haven’t heard um and so I think especially for Trey who is actively paying attention to everything that is being said about him and about the organization right now and he’s always been that way but especially now you know that was important and I’m sure he really wanted to hear that and so if he’s actively listening to this which he wasn’t because it wasn’t streaming live but if he’s going back and listening to it and saying oh they have they have a lot of wait a second you just hold on let’s go back because you said you have value in me and then okay like I think it was his way of trying to be nice to deante like saying hey we did value him and like of course you did you traded a lot to get him and it was a blockbuster trade and that that that to me is very obvious that was said in the trade but I think you could have just ended at hey we’re building around this guy this is our guy and so that does make me nervous and it does in terms of Troy’s future here and it should make everybody else nervous because that’s kind of reading between the lines that’s the message that was given just by inserting the Deonte piece if you would have deleted that sentence none of us would be sitting here and talking about that yeah and so I think it gets tricky I think so too I think that was one of those where you just give a one-word response and even going into so um you know from there on we will continue to build from where On I I don’t know from deante from Trey from Trey and deante I don’t know because a lot of people including myself aren’t 100% convinced that Trey is going to be on this roster in the fall or that he’s going to be on this roster for the entirety of the next season now that doesn’t mean I believe that that’s because the Hawks will part ways I’m just not sure what Trey is going to do by all of the commentary we’ve heard from him throughout the off season but we do know that the Hawks have someone sewn up the question is whether that one or two will be ready for a first tilt on American soil on Friday we’ll download on it in the Deep dive this episode of our Atlanta Sports party is brought to you by lowest prices guaranteed so Jarvis summer league is upon us the journey for the Hawks tips off Friday against the Wizards so first off what are some of your realistic expect for Zachary R um just to come out and just give me some give me some hope give me can you give me some hope please you know zachari rash I want to say that in a good way I don’t want to just say his name to make fun of him because he’s he’s horrible and he’s doesn’t even look like he belong in the NBA so I for me but my expectations are I just want him to play his game come in and play his game because we know that you know there going to be a lot of eyeballs on this this game obviously going against the Washington Wizards and you know Alex s allegedly or passive aggressively saying he don’t want to play for the Hawks and wanted to play for organization who’s never won 50 games before I mean I mean okay so I I think that if he can give probably about 15 or 20 points in that first game against the Wizards oh my gosh like he’ll have probably about 50% of the Hawks fan base halfway excited and I’ll be part of that 50% too because you know this is it’s going to be a lot of eyeballs are going to be on this game because we we we know what the whole the not Deonte but Trey young and Luca donish comparisons I think they was kind of done done for now like okay dude but I I I think that I don’t want I don’t think I don’t want zachar reash to have to deal with being compared to Alex SAR because I don’t think Alex SAR is gonna be all that great I do think he’s gonna be a solid player so if he can show give us a little peek into potentially being the best player in this draft right because everybody talk about this a weak draft but if you could be the best player in this draft hey we’ll take it how about you Maria what are your expectations when you see rashay hit the court Friday you know Mohamad gay said something really interesting today at practice um he was asked just about everyone around him and it’s cool because you can tell that there’s a very good vibe between the rookies and not that Muhammad is but for the younger guys just what it’s like for them to be around and these are kids that are coming from all parts of the globe which I think is really cool and so you have Zachary Ray and then you have Nica and what Muhammad said today was if people start to figure out that they’re very good it is over for a lot of people that’s what he said and if if they can start the language barrier is an issue um in some basketall phrases right now which will work itself out there’s just things that they’ve never heard before um but people tend to forget Zachary Reese just came off playing very high caliber basketball in Europe and he was doing it at a very young age he’s what 19 years old um and so the three-point line is different in the Euro league than the NBA so getting used to things like that so that’s for me that’s kind of what I want him to do in summer league is just get those things out of the way so that when we get to the fall there’s no miscommunication you know what’s expected you know how to conversate in terms of the terminology with basetball here in the NBA um but I just want to see what he does kind of like what Jarvis said we know that can play defense we know that he can shoot the ball and Mohammad was saying that he saw him shoot some crazy shots I mean that that was echoed from every single person that we spoken to so he’s not shy to shoot the basketball in practice they’ve only been practicing since Monday so for him to come out and all of a sudden just say like hey I’m here I’m gonna play free I’m gonna do my thing like that’s really important and so for him to get out there in Vegas and show the same thing I’m and do it yeah yeah and for me I just want to see him show a little bit of the versatility the Scouting Report said that he was versatile in terms of his shooting ability on the wing let’s see that because the Hawks really have had a Darth of three-point Shooters let’s just be honest since the departure of Kevin herder so really you’re looking for that shot and you’re also looking to see if he can provide much needed de defense on the wing with the Hawks decision to basically say hey we’re not going to uh pick up this option if you will I’ll say for lack of a better ter but what were declining excuse me to move forward with sadique Bay who was kind of sort of I’m going to say kind of sort of but he was kind of sort of arguably the guy who last season was kind of coming on as someone who had that perimeter shot once he got out of his slump and someone who was willing to improve his wing defense now you don’t have him so I’m looking to see not that rashay is going to be an instant translate his game is going to instantly translate offensively and defensively to make you not miss sadique but I just need to see some flashes of that in summer league so that I can feel some confidence in maybe what he’ll be able to do but that’s what we’re looking for even in a guy like Kobe buffkin the first rounder from last season obiously we know Seth Lundy’s out due to injury but for Kobe got a chance to watch him grow and develop in the g- league and really put some energy and focus into his defense that’s what I want to see from him too by the way is let’s see how much of your defensive game you’ve been working on on the off season because the Hawks are going to need all the wing defense they can get but real talk Maria just like we alluded to with the first question that Hawks Wizards matchup is not just about the Hawks or the Wizards it’s really about rashay versus SAR or number one versus number two and Jarvis you made an interesting comparison because six years later we’re still talking about young Dage Dage young and I feel like this one’s going to be around for a while as a comparison as well obviously they both from France they knew each other played together played against each other so you know Maria the comparisons are really going to go on a fifth gear Friday with these two on the court right yeah and I actually share the same belief as Jarvis in thinking that Zachary ret or you didn’t say this but I think that Zachary ruche is going to work out better um than SAR for sure and you know I definitely the more that I paid attention to his game to what he’s capable of to some of the comments that were made I just think it is a better fit for the Hawks and of course there was no you know number one for sure overall pick in this draft so you just kind of had to weigh each kid and figure out which one made the most sense and the more that I’ve started to look into it the more I truly believe Zachary rishe should have always been the number one pick honestly over Alex sain so I don’t know that the comparisons are going to be as intense as Luca and Trey um and I don’t think they should be by any stretch of the imag ation and if you just say oh they’re both from France and whatever because some people will do that like these are two French players pick the better French player that’s not fair I just think they’re two totally different people um I think Zachary Reese is the better one for the Hawks and that’s certainly what a lot of people are going to talk about on Friday but I think that’s going to go away very quickly when Zachary Reese hopefully can show us how he can contribute to this team makes it a little bit more interesting now that dejon is out so show us what you can do and I think that that’ll go away on its own I don’t think we’re going to sit here six years later and do what we always do about young and and Luca and that’s going to continue it’s not like it’s ever gonna go away I mean it’s always gonna come up and especially because Luca did what he did in the postseason so then it comes up again and you know oh the Mavs won this and blah blah blah it’s that’s gonna continue forever but I don’t know that it’s gonna do that for these kids yeah and essentially those two play the same position so it’s always going to be what could have been with donic if you would have kept him whereas these guys have a different game but yeah Jarvis they also have they play different positions and that could essentially maybe give some more separation than we saw with the other two and I think that you know being that the position that rasay plays I feel like that is the NBA today’s NBA right that Wing long Wing that can shoot the three semi Creator own shot right and and if you can have him play defense as well oh my gosh you might be working with something so yeah the fact that those are some of the you know some of the scouting reports that we that we got from him early on um in France when he was playing professionally that’s that’s a very good sign and I and I I want to go back to real quick just from a standpoint when they were going through this scouting process and trying to figure out who they were going to get they I mean the Hawks essentially did the exact same thing the Falcons did when they uh were Wild by pennic and end up making that decision they overseas Quinn Snider land Fields all of them over there just kicking it trying to see what’s going on with with this tall French dude I mean I understand everybody want to be in love with alakar I get it but I here and here’s what I believe I believe I believe in Quin Schneider I I will put I’ll put my stamp on Quin I believe in what he’s doing I I mean not necessarily agree with the whole putting up the threes thing I get that I I still don’t quite understand that just yet if you cold like go take it to the hole you know what I’m saying so but I just think that Quinn Snider and getting him getting rash up under his wing you see he was already you know talking to him and everything and having some conversations with him at practice marel had posted a video on her Twitter feed um guys check that out by the way it’s really good stuff so I I really feel like that Quinn Snider it was it was was intrical in him being the pick and hopefully he can be the reason why we won’t be talking about compar comparison two or three years down the road because there is no comparison because re is you know doing his thing yeah yeah and when you look at where like you said where the league is now look at the Champions ultimately speaking they did need a solid Center don’t get me wrong and it was good for them to have uh Kristof porzingis but even with a little bit of a departure from Kristof porzingis when he went down to injury over and over again who got you through it your wings at the end of the day that’s who wins championships these days now Wings bring wings wings I like wingsing I like it J Wings ring rings that’s hard to say three times fast good luck with that three times I’ll give you credit give me credit forwell I got you swelly yeah I apprciate that got it so the Braves might just be on their way to figuring out the fit spot we’ll talk about that in around the [Music] Metro Lock on sports today is a free 247 sports streaming channel programed for you every day to bringing the biggest stories with all out all the noise every day so Trevor ATN had the DUI charges dismissed against him in a plea agreement that was struck on Wednesday he had the charges dropped from earlier in the year pleaded no contest to reckless driving guilty charge to charges of underage possession of alcohol failure to maintain Lane and a window tent violation But ultimately Maria he received 12 months of probation do you expect the Kirby Smart will still enforce ATN suspension if for no other reason to send a message to the rest of the team of course I will you know and I hate that people don’t think that these coaches discipline their players while it may not be public and while it may not be completely in the open or for us three to completely understand what exactly that looks like I don’t think that he’s just letting things go I’ve never thought that um you know the same could be said with any college coach and maybe that’s because I’m a coach’s wife I just understand that coaches do things in their own way and so I don’t I also don’t necessarily believe it’s for us to understand or see but as long as it’s happening and as long as discipline is in place yeah and Kirby’s not the kind of Coach to just let things slide kids get in trouble it’s College it’s going to happen the end so how do you fix it how do you address it and I definitely think that Kirby does a very good job of that and um you know there’s been a lot of things that have happened at Georgia over the last year that question that and and a lot of people have obviously look at the top first and and you look at the head coach and what are they doing but I do think that there is a disciplinary measure in place and in talking to people that have played with Kirby for Kirby um they are very adamant about the fact that discipline is there it’s just not always public or seen and it doesn’t always have to be because I think if you’re not careful and you start finding yourself explaining every single thing to the public then you’re going to have to explain every single thing to the public and Jarvis I too I agree with Maria I think that the suspension will probably stay in place both to give send a signal to Trevor ATN but also to send not just a signal to current players but I think even to potentially send a message to Future players and not be like Oklahoma State’s coach Mike Gundy who basically said Hey We’re Not Gonna suspend our running back Ali Gordon you got a DUI we’re just going to make you do more push-ups well what’s that really going to do I don’t see that yeah I don’t see SM saying Trevor Lawrence give me aund a thousand squats give me a thousand push-ups no I think he’s going to really still stick with what he said before because I think ultimately and I don’t just think that is a bad look for Mike Gundy because now he finds himself on the defensive about making such a poor decision in my opinion yeah are we shocked that Mike Gundy puts his foot in foot in his mouth again I mean he’s just like he’s he’s a caricature of a coach at this point I mean I know he’s had some success whether how you measure that you know that’s up to you but I I’m looking at the guy that won back toback NS and has been pumping cats in the NFL like it’s no tomorrow and we have guys we talked about on on the Atlanta football party our Bulldog Edition all the time about guys decommitting from other schools in the SEC why are they committing decommitting from other schools in the SEC because C smart has a plan for me he’s going to develop me and he’s going to get me to where I need to be now Trevor etn that doesn’t change his plan doesn’t change it doesn’t change but guess what as we go along with your plan if you deviate from that plan I.E going out getting a reckless driving uh charge they I know they dropped the DUI chares charges but you’re going to have to pay consequences and I don’t feel that they have to necessarily put all of that out and List It what they all have to go through to get through that process so um I definitely believe that Kirby SM is going to punish him and and that need to be it because like you said I remember goodness gracious 18 to 22 there was so many things that I did not get caught for and I’m thankful to God that that did not happen so yeah if you get caught doing stuff like this Kirby is going to punish you and I have no issue with that with him not revealing act exactly what he’s doing because Nick sain was really good by about that as well I actually had a really interesting conversation with Jonathan lead better today because he’s having a camp in Tucker um he’s from Tucker he’s just an angel of a human I love him I adore him um for those of you that don’t know who he is he’s a defensive lineman or former defensive lineman for the University of Georgia currently a free agent um played at Arizona and Miami in the NFL he’ll be back dealing with some stuff right now but um you know Jonathan’s been very open about how he has had some adversity in his life and he’s gotten in trouble in the past and he’s been suspended at the University of Georgia now he did play for two different coaches at Georgia but he made some very interesting comments with me about the state of college football and he specifically mentioned Kirby smart as a coach and that a lot of kids these days run away from things when they get hard and so they transfer or things AR going their way and and they run away from it and he challenged kids to run through it whenever it’s getting hard and he said Kirby is the one that’ll get you there and he said he was you know acted like my best friend my best coach when I was there but he definitely was hard on me whenever things got tough and it got me to the place that I am today and he had Kirby to think for that and so that’s that’s kind of why I say I have full faith in Kirby disciplining his players because it’s players like that who are open and honest about having gone through things having been suspended having been a kid in college but also not getting away with everything so I think that that those were really interesting comments um and I thought it was really cool that he shared that yeah and he was one of the ones that Kirby mentioned when all of this first came down with Trevor ATN about the fact that you do discipline but you give Second Chances and he said Jonathan Leed better was one of those guys that he’s glad that he did both with yeah exactly thanks for stopping by the Atlanta Sports party the locked on Sports Atlanta YouTube channel is now streaming live 247 Welcome to the Atlanta Sports Party, your go-to for the latest in Atlanta sports, brought to you by the Locked On Podcast Network. Hosted by Tenitra Batiste, alongside Jarvis Davis and Maria Martin, this episode dives into the recent media session with Landry Fields, discussing the trade of Dejounte Murray and its implications for Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks.

Maria Martin shares her thoughts on Landry’s comments: “I think that’s a good question. And the reason I phrased the question the way that I did was because of the fact that they traded for him just two short years ago. And remember, it was a blockbuster trade. And so we’re all thinking that this is going to work out as was the front office, I’m sure. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have done it. And so I phrased it that way because while it is a business and the NBA just gets rid of players and brings players in, it’s just how it works. Any professional sports league is like that. Those decisions are very difficult.”

Jarvis Davis adds his perspective: “I feel like he Landry that question, you know what I’m saying? Like, I didn’t get anything from his answer. Right. Because, and that’s, and that’s how I feel every time he opens his mouth. That’s how I feel when he talks about basketball, when he talks about this team, because he has plenty of opportunities just to give us a little nugget and he just goes in and snatches that mug away, you know, like taking a key, taking a piece of food from a baby’s mouth, I’m just like, man, give me something.”

The team also previews the upcoming Summer League, focusing on new talent like Zaccharie Risacher and his potential impact. Maria Martin notes, “Mohammed Gaye said something really interesting today at practice. He was asked just about everyone around him, and it’s cool because you can tell that there’s a very good vibe between the rookies and not that Mohammed is, but for the younger guys, just what it’s like for them to be around. Additionally, the podcast touches on the Braves’ season and the recent legal issues surrounding Trevor Etienne, speculating on possible disciplinary actions by Kirby Smart. Maria Martin comments, “Of course I will. You know, and I hate that people don’t think that these coaches discipline their players.
