Will Dariq Whitehead reset the hype machine in Brooklyn Nets Summer League?

Will Dariq Whitehead reset the hype machine in Brooklyn Nets Summer League?

coming up it’s Vegas baby for the Brooklyn Nets and we talk about DQ Whitehead finally healthy ready to get on the court and maybe reclaim some of the hype that we saw from him coming out of college and darn it even high school we dive into it all coming up [Music] next you are locked on Nets your daily Brooklyn Nets podcast part of the locked on on podcast Network your team every day ah yes my friends it is lock podcast right you’re locked on podcast Network it’s your team the Brooklyn Nets every single day he’s Doug Nory I’m Adam Marbeck we thank you as always for making us your first listen of the day we are 100% free on all those great platforms and Doug summer league has started for some teams but not in Vegas not for the Brooklyn Nets that kicks off on Friday night and we’re going to talk about Noah Clowney we’re going to talk about Jaylen Wilson we’re going to talk about Keon John even here too but DQ Whitehead is front and center in terms of the Brooklyn Nets fan base and trying to re-engage with some hype around a player that effectively has been injured for over two years if you go back to Duke and the foot injury before he even got drafted by Brooklyn a falling star that could have been considered a top 10 Prospect at one point yeah look I mean we’re heading into summer league here APM Cox Pavilion there in Vegas against the Pacers uh very exciting to just have hoops back in our life felt like it was been it’s been like two or three days so it’s like you know what what what was with the all the holdup uh a lot of exciting things happening for the Nets I think at Summer League this year some you know stuff that’s goingon to inform us but yeah obviously I think reek Whitehead will be the guy that Nets fans probably key in on the most and probably correctly I think be you know because we got that look at Noah Clowney at the end of the season last year we don’t I don’t think there’s like too much for him to like go out and prove here at Summer League though it would be nice if he was just able to ball out obviously yeah but with a guy like white head where it’s kind of been all hype no results up until this point not because not his fault right injuries there is there are some questions that need to be answered about him and summer league for some of these guys is the place where it can be a jumping off point so I got a bunch of thoughts here on Whitehead but on like the on the sort of like expectations side do you think it’s reasonable or unreasonable to get too excited like do you want to make too much or too little from like one game here and like what is like sort of what’s your expectation for Whitehead going into this game because I’ve seen some very bullish takes on him that I always just kind of want to pump the breakes on well I put yeah I mean I put this out to the fan base it’s you know DQ Whitehead has a successful summer league if right and then what is that question mark now whether or not you get some people to come flying in you know fast and loose saying I think I got a a dunk from the free throw line like that’s what that’s what we need to see but it’s what’s interesting about DQ Whitehead is and it’s funny coming off talking about Ben Simmons and injuries and getting healthy right you hate to talk about any player that is related to the Brooklyn Nets in the way that we’ve discussed Ben Simmons over the recent years but for DQ I mean you know his own quote on this I I’ll answer your question a second but I’m feeling good I’m saying I’d say this is the first time in my career since probably high school where I’m feeling like I could get out there and be myself again and contribute in the way that I know I should contribute so there’s this weird thing about him as a as a profiled player athletic plays Above the Rim quick First Step can take guys off the dribble a little bit tenacious defensive value is some of the upside you talk about him but if you go back and watch Duke you say well he didn’t seem to really quite show it right foot injury okay Nets draft him okay then he ends up having the issues that he contributes to the Brooklyn Nets shutting him down as being the best decision he made to get him fully healthy into this point so when we come to this it’s I it’s more than just he needs to look healthy I think because that’s too low of a bar for me relative to the expectations that he has as a prospect I would say yes first game Friday night look healthy that that’s fine but if we think about summer league overall I I don’t have there’s certain things I don’t need to see him do but I do need to see him look like a player we talked about this with Cam Thomas in his summer league session a few years ago hey I need you to look like a guy that’s better than a lot of dies in summer league right now if you want me to look at this season ahead and think you could really start to develop still just 19 about to be 20 years old so plenty of time but I need to see those little seeds right right so you’re actually had a less tempered reaction than I thought you were going to um on this and I was GNA ring in there with the as a reminder like the guy worst case scenario he’s 19 years old right like he’s 19 he would be one of the youngest players like probably in this year’s draft and he got drafted last year right so he’s incredibly incredibly young um coming out his reclassified and like just it shot him into the NBA sooner than than you know I think most people expected even though again I think he was like at worst the number two and I think at times is a top prospect coming out of high school going into Duke the coming out of high school yeah whatever what we’re buying on Whitehead at this point is promise because last year let’s couch up the injuries the numbers and weren’t good right like you go back to Duke the numbers aren’t good like you can’t build a case for him based on his college and pro numers such as they were they’re limited again he was injured but even if you you know going back from that like you can’t look at his at the any you can’t look at a single college or or or NBA NG League number and be like that’s that’s the guy we drafted the numbers are pretty are pretty bad right like the G League he only played four games he shot 14% from three he played fewer than 20 minutes a game right eight points a game uh at Duke we obviously know that he didn’t uh he didn’t even really start all the games when he was there he only started seven out of the 28 he averaged eight points a game um shot you know 43% from threes so made some threes when he was in there but like just didn’t wasn’t a big scorer right and we watched the tape going into the draft because we had we thought there was a chance that he was going to get drafted by the Nets and we said at the time we’re like you’re buying on his high school stuff because the Duke stuff does not look explosive he’s not beating a lot of guys off the dribble he’s not you know playing Above the Rim a lot and you’re buying on high school which is fine like you can buy on you can buy on pass performance especially at this age like you don’t want to buy on pass performance when a guy’s 35 and be like remember what he did when he was 25 and it’s like that doesn’t count right like we don’t we don’t that’s not that’s not what we’re doing remember what Ben Simmons did in his mid 20s hold on now let him get towards I mean that’s a good that’s actually a good Nets related comp right it’s like we can’t really Buy on that athleticism there’s just too long of a track record the worry here with DQ is that these are injur it’s all injury related foot injuries it’s multiple foot injuries Sur inuries that stuff can get better but where I pump the breaks really hard is that when it’s injury related this young and you’re you’re you’re dealing with like an explosive kind of guy my my te my expectations are actually very very tempered here I I would need to see it for a long time I think in order to start feeling very bullish and I have one more summer league thought but I what what are your thoughts on that no no I I yes I agree with you you need to set the bar reasonable coming in here I will say that there are ways in summer league that DQ Whitehead can get me excited about his NBA career and it’s not necessarily related to the Above the Rim explosiveness I start to think about how he pairs with a cam Thomas and how you think about him in this young course something we can get into here in a second which we will including though an extra bonus thought about summer league overall from Doug nor we’ll dive into that in just one moment all right before we get tell you about our friends over at eBay passion Drive patience day uh your extra bonus g-league thought overall uh g-league summer league note before I talk about just fit and I think expectation for DQ Whitehead in this young Corp well it was just related to Summer League too but it’s a sort of a it’s more of a highlevel idea on summer league which is that there’s certain archetypes that can really excel at summer right it’s hard sometimes it’s hard for Bigs because you’re just it’s up and it’s up and down the court um it’s like you’re not going to get you don’t sometimes get into like super Advanced sets and if you don’t have a good point guard on your team or like a confident point guard like it’s gonna be hard for a big to look good it’s conversely it’s very easy to for guards to look good right right like because they control the action a little bit more if they you know if you’re a cam Thomas and you like your shot summer league is like kind of was was made for you right and he was made for summer league and he absolutely dominated summer league for like multiple Seasons Whitehead’s like kind of right in between as like a sort of like hyperactive Wing an athletic Wing where he has ball handling and he does theoretically like project to be you know a spacer this is a this is an environment that should benefit him if he’s healthy right like this is this is the kind of he’s the kind of guy where if you have on ball theoretically on ball creation and you have athleticism summer league should be a time where you should actually stand out again Noah Clowny looked bad at Summer League last year and like whatever right by the end of the season little harder for Bigs like I said but it’s it was like he kind of looked lost Whitehead’s 19 he doesn’t have tons of NBA speed ready stuff going on in his in his in his background here so there’s going to be forgiven but he is of the archetype in summer league that if you have it you should stand out yeah and I believe and I’m I would almost guaranteed like he probably play Summer League next year too be my guess but like um you know unless something goes really awesome this year but sometimes with guys at Summer League I’m like sometimes less impressed by guys who go totally nuke as I sometimes am worried about guys who look unimpressive and they were supposed to look good like that you know does that make sense like that’s sometimes my because if you look unimpressive at Summer League then I’m like because it doesn’t get because it doesn’t get easier at the next level no 100% and this was this was when we watched Noah clown we remember at the time of the draft we said hey he’s so young don’t worry it can take multiple seasons and then even when we saw Summer Le was like oh yeah that was kind of I think for you and I at the time confirmation oh okay you see him struggling he’s kind of just hopping all over the place here he’s taking the outside shots but they’re not really going down I was trying to build up the irrational hype around the perimeter shooting then you start to watch him at the g-league you see that it’s developing and that looks pretty good but it really came down to when he finally got up to the NBA level at the end of last season it was oh oh okay it all clicked together and then you hear how he’s like you know a bit of a film nut how he absorbs everything coaches are telling him he really is taking in the information applying it and then carrying it forward so everything about him seemed to take an Accelerated timeline what I will say is when it comes to DQ white so two things one you said you know chance that he’ll end up being in the G League again next year in summer league again next year excuse me the one difference here is coming into this season and I hope that this is the way the Brooklyn Nets approached this and it goes for every young player but if DQ white at is healthy he’s going to play he’s going to play this year at the NBA level and he should be playing a lot there is no reason for DQ Whitehead to be working on his craft at the g-league level because this is a Lost season for the Brooklyn Nets it’s a gap year right they’re going to go study abroad in Europe they’re going to meet some really exciting people maybe try some new foods all that kind of good stuff and then they’re going to come back next year and try to draft Cooper flag so I think that he gets a little bit of a different Arc here now from a Net’s organization standpoint same thing with Noah Clowney you can look at it and say why wasn’t he up here after the trade deadline we thought he could have been up the NBA level sooner getting those reps but I hopefully they approach that differently then it comes down to what do you want to see from DQ and I mentioned how he is athletic he is explosive you talk about him being one of those Wing players you go back to that 40 plus percent at Duke in limited sample great but I man in a world where their ages lined up right and cam Thomas wasn’t well beyond g a summer league and G League reps at this point of his career as we all know I would love to see these guys sample together in Vegas at the summer league because I actually think take the journey with me Doug if you’re projecting forward a year and Cooper flag is the is the golden ticket that we’re trying to land I like the idea of seeing if DQ Whitehead with his on ball ability a little bit of facilitation the assist a turnover ratio is not great going back to college I like the idea of finding out if you can stick him in the back court and you can finally have a bigger backcourt player that you can play off of Cam Thomas and then you start to tear yourself out dream the cam Thomas DQ Whitehead Cooper flag Noah Clowney and Nicholas Claxton starting five like that’s something that I actually think is long-term better for jeriq Whitehead to see if he can do some things in that side of his game rather than solely be focused on can he get back to that freak level athleticism because there’s stuff when you go watch his tape yeah he plays Above the Rim but he’s not a huge guy like it says 67 but I think this is like 65 and a half 66 so I don’t know if that’s going to translate perfectly to the NBA level from a physicality standpoint an explosive standpoint and just being able to play off those wings and take guys and get at the basket it’s a fascinating to see how he looks physically yeah and I I totally agree with you and you did you walked a a really bullish uh long term you’re like okay well walk with me here Cooper if we’re here now if we’re here now Doug plus a fully healthy DQ way like yeah I mean that’s you got that’s fans just probably passed out there just even thinking about the idea but and by the way even even a healthy DQ Whitehead that you can project to be a contributor to a roster a year from now I think is really exciting and that’s you know if I wanted to take a breath but I won’t look my final like kind of like thought on Whitehead here going into this is that like it’s of two minds it’s of it’s the it’s the constant reminder he’s 19 years old yes he turns 20 at the end he turns 20 August 1st right so he is very very very young like if if he doesn’t look good against in the Pacers and League or really the whole summer league it’s like not a huge deal right I I do wantan to like I wanna I’m really saying that to myself um and like kind of just saying it to everybody else like it’s not not a huge deal if he doesn’t look good he doesn’t even have tons of like NBA speed reps right because much in the G league and he just didn’t play really didn’t play anything at the NBA level so there’s like six games worth of speed reps and the speed does matter especially like the speed of these games at this level and this this competition level does matter and so if you are a step behind on a processing standpoint like that is just totally fine he’s a rookie like he’s a he’s 100% uh a very like you know an unseasoned rookie and the great hope is that we see at least the beginning fla flashes of the athleticism the athleticism if the athleticism can start looking like that’s coming back then I think we could forgive any Encore processing issues right because it’s just like you just don’t have enough time on task but if the athleticism looks like that is not there that would actually be to me a a cause for concern because sometimes that’s tough to get back but yeah you know this is this is still very early in the game and in terms of being good to go the other quote from him was just getting back and knowing that I’m not trying to rush it making sure I’m 100% and really healthy for training camp White had explained also knowing that I’m healthy enough to go out there and play all those games and make sure I contribute at a high level and continue to just get better each week I would so you actually said you touched on there at the end because my final note on DQ Whitehead would be in terms of expectations in over the course of this summer league would be and I think you hit you hit a really good point show show that you can take a couple guys off the dribble right G get get downhill going towards the basket you don’t need to Fly Above the Rim and throw one down for me to get relateded but just show you have that little bit of burst show obviously that the outside shot is there when you get a couple of feeds and some open looks you’re knocking some of them down because the percentages took a dip a year ago in limited sample size but the part that I like that you mentioned also too was show me that you have some of the Court Vision that you can distribute a little bit and guess what you blow a few passes you air mail a couple into the stands that’s not going to deter me from taking away the positive things that you’re doing you know there’s no there’s no downside here to it same thing defensively hey get in front of a guy a couple of possessions switch a few times and go oh he really read and reacted to what was happening on the defensive end of the court all those little things are going to make enough of a sample size for me to say and then this is where we depart a little I go okay now show it again in game number two in this summer and then game number three now let’s get ourselves into training camp like I’ll start to build my excitement around him I I I think the hardest part is and you hate it is trying to look past that the injuries are there and that there’s that you’re always going to be walking a little bit on pins and needles about be healthy through summer be healthy through training camp be healthy at the beginning of the year and by game 20 1520 the regular season you’ll go okay that’s in the rear viiew now we can just be excited about what his game shows us so I’m definitely willing to start to go down that road and by the way a little bit of that is coming off the guy we’re going to talk about in a second in his expectations Noah Clowney and the leap that he took when we finally got him on the court as well as the old second-year player in Jaylen Wilson plus the entire roster will it out talking previewing the summer league kicking off in Vegas for the Brooklyn Nets Friday night the Pacers it’s all going to come together Doug we do want to touch on just a whole bunch of young names in terms of of How It’s shifted for what the Nets can accomplish here they have uh I think they’re like seventh in odds to win the Summer League Championship they just throwing it out there as well they should Noah Clowney lights the world on fire by Brooklyn Nets fans perspectives at the end of last season when we talk about summer league though th this I think does feel a little bit different now you’ve been at the NBA level you’ve shown what you’re capable of now the double down here is you need to look like you’re better than most of the guys out there on the floor you need to be more consistent the the the barometer for Success relative to DQ Whitehead is higher for Noah Clowney because he’s already shown us he can do it at the highest level yeah to me like Clowney it’s it’s one of these things where I think he’ll be good and I think it’ll not matter I’m not surprised he’s playing because it’s just like an onc Court rep thing but he was getting close to being good enough to not so but he’s young enough that it makes that it makes sense I think that he’ll have kind of no problem here again understanding it’s a little harder for The Bigs especially if you’re like not super Adept of om ball creation which he’s not going to be but I think like his athleticism we already saw the athleticism played at the NBA level like he should be able to like kind of dominate here um on probably both ends if you can get the ball so I’m like not really worried about him uh at all and by the way you mentioned before like everything he says all the right stuff like his his quotes are you can say the you can get you don’t get often credit for saying the right thing you get dinged for saying the wrong thing he does say all the right stuff and has had has very very you know sort of curated positive and true answers about stuff I mean the guys that you know other than him and and DQ I think the guys that we kind of probably want to look for here that could probably pop a little bit like you know Jaylen Wilson he showed it at the NBA level too I think enough again not a perfect environment for him but I’m like this is probably a little bit of like you might not Jaylen Wilson might not come off so sexy in summer league and you probably have to look you may have to look past that a little bit just because he’s not a freak athlete candidate like right I mean you know he’s 23 years old he’s kind of a role I think he’s carved out for a role player so just good Reps for him is fine look and you know guys like so Keon Johnson let’s say right 22 couple different stops here super athletic and springy you know a little on the thinner side hasn’t really like probably carved that a clear NBA role for him but like you can see it like he’s a guy I can see standing out and you obviously want to see what Mark Armstrong they’re they the guy they picked up um from Villanova after the draft like these are the guys that I’m going to be kind of looking for because I think these are the guys where a summer league plays into their skills guards on Ball and like athleticism can really play so I think that like you know if I’m trying to turn my attention to guys who could pop and if they didn’t I’d be like huh okay right um why isn’t it why aren’t you standing out in this environment because these environments are really good for this I mean Armstrong I guess a little on the younger side but guys like that you know does that make sense like I I sometimes want to see it from that kind of dude because I mean summer League’s not like roll the balls out and just see what happens but it’s a little bit right it’s a little bit of it’s unstructured it’s unstructured it’s fast-paced it it benefits you if you if you can get up in the down the court really fast I don’t really like to overrate really small guards who just have to be faster than everybody right like I not I’m not interested in so much that but I am interested in you know can your athleticism look at least like it’s going to translate and your on court stuff look like it’s going to translate and get excited about that yeah and I listen I’ll throw in Jaylen Martin as well played with the New York Knicks last summer league uh came out undrafted in 2023 but you know backcourt player 66 216 you talk about some guy slight of frame well here’s a guy that’s got some bulk and he’s 20 years old and the big difference here is unlike years past and this is generally for NBA when I said oh the Nets are among one of the top teams to be able to win the summer league why because most NBA teams aren’t really concerned about what goes on at Summer League they’re trying to develop some guys in the background if you’re a contending team these are guys that maybe you’ll see them down the road maybe they’ll become interesting players to talk about in trade pack is when you want to get that missing piece for you but the Brooklyn Nets it’s well we have everything to value in summer league and we want to see these young guys develop and then what we can take away from that translates to our regular season where we keep developing these guys and every young player I mean there’s a world where over the course of this NBA season we’re talking about not just Noah Clowney DQ Whitehead Jaylen Wilson we mentioned these other names guys that are 22 years and younger there’s going to be there’s going to be games when there’s nobody on the court for the Brooklyn Nets over 25 years old this season like you know stretches of games where the veterans get sat down and all the young guys get out there for big run to see what pieces could fit going forward so that’s the part of it where maybe if you’re a Keon Johnson or any of these younger players you all of a sudden go and this is like Noah Clan’s response about after the trade of of male bridges yeah I I’m gonna miss male I’m excited for him and I’m also excited for myself because it means in the rebuild I get to take the next big step forward all these young guys who were on Brooklyn when they were still running with male and Johnson and that different thing even when it was the Kevin Durant era now all of a sudden they turn the page and go oh I this might be the best roster to be on right now to try to give myself a chance to have an NBA career right so I think that that’s really valuable when you come to Summer League like this these are guys that see a clear path for themselves rather than a longterm Long Island Nets future where you’re just kind of playing out the string maybe when we talk about the summer league roster we don’t look at a guy like chaam 28 years old at Arizona State as someone who’s long for the Nets that’s a good way yeah proba not I don’t know I don’t know I don’t know why Doug why did I throw shade at one player on the summer league roster on the way out the door it’s all you make a good point too like I think this this young group should probably see this is like a even better opportunity than they would have ever had in the past like you can it’s good to be part of teams like this because if you’re young and unproven because you can just get way more time than you ever would I mean look at Memphis last year they had an absolute revolving door of NBA guys on like two on 10day contracts on two-way contracts it was actually impossible to follow like on a nightly basis I doing this every single night I was like who’s even on the team right now was very difficult and but point being you can walk into a situation where shuttling between Long Island and Brooklyn is like a real thing this year and you’re gonna actually play real minutes because the team’s just not so interested in winning great news for you you get to play a lot like guy like for Memphis guys like Vince William Vince Williams were able to really get out there Scotty Pippen Jr like these guys got tons of chances um just mostly because the team was just like happy to suck happy to suck and if and if that’s the case then if you’re young and you get there’s a chance for you to play a lot and I my guess is a lot of these guys probably have to be able to see up we clearly know Clowny sees it because he said it um and so the other guys if you see this if you you kind of maybe count yourself as lucky if you’re a young player and you’re on this team right now and you’re not just totally buried with like a Jacques vaugh who never wanted to play a young guy like you know under any CC irst ances right and we’ve just because we’ve been through that and I get it like the the stakes were different and you know the wins and losses mattered a lot more but for where the Nets are built right now I mean yeah this is like it could be like a dream come true for some of these guys one of these guys probably will pop by the way because they’re just gonna have the opportunity uh to be able to do it okay it’s gonna whad so don’t worry about it guys we’re all set there you go you know K salt we are um we’ll be back on Monday we’re going to cover the summer league game uh but we’re not going to be coming live right after that just because of some other stuff going on in the past we’ve kind of done that but that’s not going to happen tonight but we will catch up around summer league for sure early next week to see kind of what happened in the meantime make sure if you want some you know probably instant summer league reactions go follow Adam arre on Twitter follow at Doug Nory on Twitter make sure you subscribe to lock. The Brooklyn Nets open Summer League on Friday against the Indiana Pacers, and it will be a chance for some of their young talent to stand out. Many eyes will be on Dariq Whitehead, the second-year player whose time so far has been marred a bit by injury. The 19-year-old was incredibly highly touted coming out of high school but struggled at Duke and in his limited time in the NBA.

What will Dariq Whitehead need to show at Summer League this year? Should the expectations be on the higher side? They also talk about Noah Clowney, Jalen Wilson, Keon Johnson, and more.
