Does Phoenix Suns guard Josh Okogie’s new contract still make him tradeable?

Does Phoenix Suns guard Josh Okogie’s new contract still make him tradeable?

you had said yesterday I don’t remember exactly how you phrased it maybe you will but that we might be a little surprised by how much money Josh aogi is getting from the Suns and I was a little surprised at how much money Josh aogi got from yeah I was told after Lowry s uh sign with Philly the suns were going to sign Josh aogi so we put it out there that I expect the suns are going to sign uh Josh aogi we played the breaking news news Sounder when we said they will sign Josh a kogi and then the word that I came up with um which was was fascinating is that I expected the yogi numbers to be sizable okay that was the sizable sizable yes I expect the yogi number to be sizable this is not going to be a vets minimum contract now he’s a vet minimum guy but with the guy and this is this is pretty smart and genius by the Suns in many ways it really is I mean this is defying traditional logic cuz look we’ll get into it later they’re going to have to write a big check for this team okay they’re not going to be able to cover it with the revenue that’s coming in but by making a kogi salary higher and now put you into a category in which you can now trade him yeah now you’re GNA have to attach picks sure of course you’re gonna have to like hey I’ll give you Josh a kogi and two second round picks for this player that you’ve got making $8 million so it’s genius in a way what the sons were able to do with Josh cu is he worth that money no the second year is not guaranteed right so it’s really a one-year deal they paid him more than he’s worth but they did it because now they could bring back a player at that salary in which they wouldn’t have been able to do if they didn’t do this I got to imagine they did it for a couple of reasons so they gave him let’s do the details here for just a second it’s technically a two-year $16 million contract but as you said the second year of the contract is non-guaranteed so it’s in essence a oneyear deal that you can get out of after one year I I think they gave him the money for two reasons and I think one of them you just touched on and we’ll we’ll get into here in just a moment and that is by giving him $8 million in the first year of the deal you’ve given yourself yet another tradable contract at some point around the deadline I think reason number two and we talked about this a little bit yesterday Josh a kogi needed a reason the wait you know like the suns were like saying okay we’re not going to sign you just yet we’re going to explore the Kyle Lowry thing see if we can make it and Josh’s like okay I’m going to wait but what’s in it for me I’ll tell you8 million we’ll give you 8 million get Lowry you get 8 million million okay I’ll wait I’ll I’ll play that game I’ll play that game I’ll wait and I’ll go to bed every night and I’ll pray to God that Kyle Lowry signs with Philly I’ll pray dear Lord please help Kyle go back to Philly please look it’s it’s risky it’s expensive the tax bill is historic I’m going to get into that in a little bit Yeah the the money that Matt ishia is shelling out has never been done before in the history of the NBA but in a weird Twisted way it’s kind of Genius it’s genius because now at the deadline and Kellen olssen pointed this out on Twitter last night you have five contracts that are tradeable you got five contracts that range between $18 million and $6.75 million and any one of those are a very tradable now some of them more than others I would guess a kogi’s deal is more tradable than some of the others because it’s an expiring it’s basically a one-year deal it’s expiring and yeah it’s an aspiring NZ little has multiple years left Yousef nerkish has multiple years left Grace Allen Royce O’Neal have multiple years left Ki becomes the your biggest trade chip I think he’s your Chip he’s your biggest trade Chip he’s your chip because what you can’t do you can’t combine any of those salaries and make a move can’t say like I’ll take NZ little and I’ll take a kogi and I’ll trade that $15 million or 14 million for somebody making 14 million can’t do that and you also can’t take back more money than you send away so whatever player you bring in has to be making less than Josh aogi so in a weird perverted Twisted way it’s actually a good idea to overpay Josh aogi so you can ensure the guy you’re bringing back when you is a better makes a little bit less right because you can’t take back more he’s got so we got to overpay Josh and kogi at eight so that the player we really want at seven we’re allowed to bring that guy back in that guy made nine we can’t bring him back that player’s going to be a better player than a vet minimum guy right and that player is going to have three years left on his deal or four years left on his deal and the suns are going to think that he’s better and it’s going to be a wave for them it’s it’s bril brilliant but it’s also and look we’ve said this a billion times it’s Matt is’s money hey if if you don’t mind paying the tax we appreciate your effort in doing this because everybody is trying not to be a second tax apron team and M ISP is just like the hell with it let’s go let’s write checks money they were able to pay Josh aogi and I I reported this yesterday when we broke the news that aogi was coming back they could have paid aogi up to 12.9 million so they didn’t pay him like the dollar they could have paid him up to $12.9 million that was the max they could have paid him they come in less than that but you know somewhere in between the vet minimum and that 12.9 is what they got him for but yeah that was the reason why aogi was able to hold out and wait because he could have signed a vet minimum deal with somebody else but there was an enticement dangling by the Phoenix Suns wait this out if we don’t get Kyle Lowry we’ve got something for you but it was always going to be Josh aogi if they didn’t get Kyle Lowry uh the contracts are are nerk at 18 Grayson Allen at 15 A5 O’Neal at 9 and a half 10 aogi at8 little at 6.75 those are the five contracts they have all those guys except for little play so so nurkic plays and Allan plays and Royce O’Neal plays so what you know Josh and Nas little are the guys that aren’t going to play very much so they become the easily tradeable but you’re right on that Nas is harder to trade because he’s got a couple years left on his yeah and and I mean you say that about Grayson and I’m not advocating trading Grayson and I’m not advocating trading nerk but if Grayson Allen gets off to a good start this year that’s a very very very tradable contract if you wanted to you could get back multiple use you wouldn’t have to attach a draft pick if you wanted to trade Grayson Allen if you thought a deal was out there that brought you two good players back for one you wouldn’t have to right like so so it’s it’s they’re all a little bit different but I agree that now if you can’t trade a kogi what do you get okay you get Josh aogi for all of his greatness and all of his flaws you know exactly what you’re going to get high high motor Guy high one of the highest Motors on the team that’s what we all love about him 64 plays bigger than 64 with his with his physicality good defensive player offensively I can he get better everyone talks about hey if he could just get better at this point don’t I think it would have happened by now if Josh a kogi were going to get Str and he has a lot of weaknesses his strength he can attack the basket um is his weakness is shooting the basketball and you’re G to have a few guys that I can’t wait for the summer league to to start because the two rookies they have um you know they don’t Ryan Dunn doesn’t shoot the ball that well and oh alsoo doesn’t shoot the ball from three at all so it’s going to be interesting to watch that so they’ve got some guys when you can’t shoot the ball you are limited and it’s hard to play you and that’s where I wondered I had wondered if the Suns and you you know you’re the reporter guy on the show I’m not so I’m just I’m kind of the I throw darts in the dark and see if anything sticks I had wondered if the suns were holding out for a shooter not necessarily another point guard but a shooter like somebody else they could bring in and feel comfortable about going to make a shot or two when we need him to because of what they had done in the draft and just trying to figure out whether those guys are going to play or not this year now I don’t know if they’re going to I I I would imagine at this point that Mike buen holer probably Trust aogi more than he trusts those two guys that they just drafted even though they’re all kind of offensively challenged because aogi at least has done it in this league for a few years so it gives you that option if the draft picks don’t work out and they’re not ready to play right away but ai’s got his flood but like you said yesterday and you’ve made the point the last couple of days and it’s a good one Josh aogi you know what he’s going to bring in practice you know what he’s going to do for team chemistry you know how he is in the locker room you know how he is with the other guys he’s a good easy fit on your team so if you can’t trade him at least you know you’ll have somebody that if you need guys that practice hard well and you need you need guys that will push other guys in practice and you need guys in December and you need guys in January and you need guys in February when your guys are hurt and guys are and you’re trying to figure out we need minutes we need 15 minutes here we need 10 minutes there you need guys like that you need guys like Josh aogi they might not help you win a title you need guys like Josh aogi they know all the players that are in that range salary-wise I wonder if they’ve got a Target or two for the deadine I wonder if they’ve got a couple of guys targeted right now with that salary yep if privately they’ve said okay we look at this team we think they could be a seller at the deadline they’ve got this dude he’s making $7.5 million we can get him we can get him he’ll be available I bet I bet you’re right thanks for watching
