Detroit Pistons Hire Luke Walton & Kevin Burleson As Assistant Coaches

hey guys what is going on Anthony here with pistons talk hope you guys are having a great day so far what I wanted to do today was update you guys on the assistant coaches now since the Detroit Pistons have cleaned house not only in the front office but coaching staff we’re getting a brand new coaching staff obviously the head coach is going to be JB bicker staff one of the assistants is going to be Fred Vincent which will probably be more of a shooting and development coach um we also got news last week that Sydney low is going to be returning to Detroit for his third stint so obviously Sydney does like the city shout out um but we did get some brand new coaches that are going to be joining the staff now the first coach we got yesterday this is from Shams karania and he had a tweet saying that the Detroit Pistons are hiring Luke Walton as the lead assistant on new head coach JB bicker staff’s staff sources tell the athletic and Stadium Walton spent two years assistant in Cleveland after five plus Seasons as the head coach in the Lakers and the Kings now I don’t know how fans feel about Luke Walton I honestly think this is a good hire he he seems like an offensive minded coach he seems like kind of like that offensive coordinator if you will if you guys watch football you know what an offensive coordinator is but I’m not mad at the Luke Walton um hiring I I think he will be good for the Detroit Pistons now some of you may be wondering like what is Luke Walton’s coaching experience in the NBA so I do have it pulled up over here on basketball reference for you guys to see um we can go right here where it’s highlighted 20 uh 145 in Golden State he was just an assistant coach I think a lot of you guys will remember the 20156 season he was an assistant coach but he did have to step in for Steve cerr and he went 34 or 39 and 4 Excuse me while Steve Kerr was recovering from back surgery now that was the year the Golden State Warriors won 70 plus games I think they went like what like 72 or 73 and N fun fact the Detroit Pistons were actually one of the teams that beat Luke Walton while he was an interim uh head coach with kcp Andre Drummond and them boys I’m sure you guys remember the uh that pist in Squad back in the day uh if we do go back to his coaching resume though uh he was with the Lakers um and he went 26 and 56 obviously not great uh he did improved the next season going to uh 35- 47 in 20178 uh then he went 37 and 45 and the Lakers decided to move on from him uh then he went to Sacramento for two year or three years excuse me he went 31 and 41 um in 201920 in 2020 2021 and then the Kings decided to fire him after 17 games where he went 6 and 11 and the past two seasons he has been an assistant coach under JB bicker step so he does have some head coaching experience which I think honestly is a plus if you do ask me um again I think this is more of just of a offensive coordinator if you will kind of like that offensive coach that can help the Detroit Pistons because JB bicker staff is more known as a defensive uh coach um if you ask people he’s not really known as an offensive coach which I I think bringing in Luke Walton was a good move now the next assistant coach at the Detroit Pistons did announce on this comes from Adrien wowski it says Kevin Burleson hasn’t agreed uh has agreed to take on an assistant coaching job with JB bicker staff andony trit Pistons s tell ESPN burison spent the past two seasons with the Rockets g-league head coach he also had stops with Minnesota and Memphis so we’ll go over to uh Kevin burlinson now his his experience in the NBA is very um limited as a as a coach so like w did mention he was with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2019 2020 is an assistant coach and a Player Development coach and then you know the the the past two seasons he was an assistant coach uh with Minnesota in 2020 2021 and 2021 2022 now the the thing about um burlinson that’s actually really interesting CU I I pulled up his g- leak stuff and you guys know that one of my jobs is actually holy hat um covering the G League now I if we go over and look at the Rio uh Grande Valley vipers that is it’s such a long name for team holy um you you look at their record the one thing you know 201 and4 the g-league obviously a 500 they finished in fourth place in the Western Conference still make the playoffs by the way this is where I was really kind of Pumped look at this right here you guys they have the best Pace in the uh in the G League they were first in pace which I don’t know if if what he’s going to do with the Detroit Pistons but that’s saying something that you can be first and Pace in the g- league because a lot of these guys are on two-way contracts a lot of these guys are trying to get into the league they played fast they they they were definitely a team that were running up and down the floor now the offensive rating is anything to write home they were actually one of the worst offensive rating teams in the NBA but if you look at defensive rating with the Rio Grande valy vipers again first in defensive rating so this was a team under Kevin burlinson where they were out there running in transition having the best Pace in the G league but they also had the best defensive rating in the G league so you know maybe Kevin burlinson can come in and kind of be like that defensive coordinator we talked about Luke Walton being the offensive coordinator maybe he can come in and be that defensive coordinator because having the best defensive rating in the G league is nothing to sneeze at like that’s actually a really good accomplishment and also having the best Pace in the g- league is something that I think maybe some fans will Overlook but I think it’s actually a a a pretty good thing if you ask me because in the G League there’s a lot of guys in there that are just trying to make to the league you got the two-way guys that really don’t want to be there they want to be with the team so um I think that is really interesting and if if the last name looks familiar you guys it should so Kevin burlingon is actually the brother the older brother if you will of mate Berlin and he had this tweet last night I wanted to show it uh to you guys saying that he’s so proud of his big brother he’s one of the best coaches in the game and even better man the Detroit Pistons just Land one of uh one of the more beautiful basketball Minds to the team so um if the last name does look familiar even just his face looks familiar it’s because that is the younger brother of Nate burlingon who did play for the Detroit Lions um if you guys do remember during like that Matthew Stafford Megatron Kelvin Johnson era but did just want to give you guys a quick little 8 Minute update about these coaches uh what to expect a little bit of their background resume what um kind of like what they’ve had in the league with like Luke Walton having some head coaching experience but the past few years he’s been an assistant coach and Kevin burlingon being an assistant Player Development coach with the the Minnesota Timberwolves and then getting a really good opportunity to coach the Houston Rockets G League team and you know having them being one of the best paced offenses uh not not not best paced offenses but the best paced team in the G league and one of the uh best defensive rating teams in the G league as well but talk to me down below in the comment section what you guys think of both of these uh hirings to fill out this coaching staff again
