I believe their basketball culture is 90% predicated on *Hoosiers.*

Yeah they have to constantly chirp about “basketball history” because their basketball relevancy is like 40-50 years old at this point:
Hoosiers came out during the Reagan admin. Larry Bird too.
Their flagship university hasn’t been relevant in basketball in forever. Their top guys of the last decade plus are Oladipo and Eric Gordon? Meanwhile UConn has been consistently good and even Rutgers is set to have 2 lottery picks playing for them this year.
Their NBA team has been about as irrelevant as ours has been since the 90’s heyday. Their most notable contribution to basketball is the Malice at the Palace.
Their “big” city exists mainly to host the NFL combine and corporate conferences you’d rather not attend but hey at least the flights are quick for everyone since it’s centrally located!
And yes, we DO sit in a lot of traffic – mostly because we actually have stuff to do.

Unfortunately, there are a couple of things in Indiana/Indianapolis’ favor when we look at basketball culture as a whole.
– The quality and amount of NBA players from NYC and the metro area has fallen off. I only count guys who played high school ball in NYC or the area, it’s absurd when Michael Jordan gets counted as a New Yorker when his family moved from BK to North Carolina when he was 5 years old. The NYC metro area has the best current player, Kyrie Irving. But then it falls off quickly whereas Indiana has more depth with Eric Gordon, Jaden Ivey, Gordon Haywood, and Desmond Bane.
– Indiana’s colleges have done much better NY’s. Going city for city, Indianapolis’ Butler has done much better over the past few decades than St John’s. I’m a big St. John’s fan, so this is especially galling.
– The Pacers have been pretty close to the Knicks in terms of playoff success since they joined the NBA in 1976. The Pacers have one fewer Finals appearance, but they’ve been to way more conference finals than the Knicks this century
– the prep schools have really eviscerated the strength of NYC’s public high schools for elite talent.
Of course, if we go further into the past, NY metro area hoops is better than Indiana’s. Kareem, Bob Cousy, Chris Mullin, Mark Jackson, Bernard King, Pearl Washington, on and on.

They couldn’t even sell out their arena during the playoffs 😭

Their men’s basketball team is named after a reference to another sport, and their women’s basketball team is named after an illness.

Who has more rich history and culture than Indiana? Their greatest player, Cheryl’s little brother played 18 seasons yet is only remembered for 1 playoff game and 1 incident where Jordan almost ripped his head off. Ron Artest and Stephen Jackson fought some fans in Detroit. Lance Stephenson blew in LeBrons ear during one of the many playoff series they lost to him during that time period. This current group of guys who have 2021 Hawks written all over them. Got a free pass to the conference finals cause everyone else was hurt and they’re going to find out the hard way they’re just not that good. Oh and who could forget Danny Granger was a cheat code in the old 2K games 🔥🔥🔥. Can never land any big stars and the big stars they draft like Pandemic P never want to stay. Hoosier state baby. Also let’s not even get started on the Colts. Peyton Manning left and has wanted nothing to do with them since. He’d rather be considered a Bronco than a Colt.

At least the Knicks didn’t have to hold a telethon to keep their team.

they are still gassed up on their mickey mouse playoff run vs 2 hospital teams, will be lucky to get crushed in the first round next year

They are basing their culture on Hoosier basketball, Larry Bird, and Reggie Miller….which is respectful.
However, I’d argue that Rucker Park has more culture than those three combined.
