play shows you he has all the pieces but he also showed a lot of other things in that ball game as well so we will look at Cody Williams Kyle filipowski and Isaiah call you’re both shined as well in that and I still love Darius Bisley just love a guy who plays his game in summer league we’ll talk about all the jazz players in game one of Vegas I’m actually heading to Vegas today we’ll be there for tonight’s game be there for Wednesday’s game bringing you shows live Tuesday and Wednesday for not live but Tuesday and Wednesday shows from Vegas might pick up some interviews along the way some various things who knows um have some fun with it so heading down to Vegas uh for that we will also talk about I think the NBA misunderstands what a good perimeter defensive player is not actually great news for the Jazz if you look at it this way but um really just some thoughts on what good perimeter Defenders are in the NBA and think they’re gone and then quick scan of summer league did we sit around for like nine months talk about how crappy a draft class is it’s just fine it’s actually just fine probably it’s kind of what my point was the entire time that’s what’s coming up on today’s show I Am David lock radio voice the Utah Jazz jazznba inside this as I mentioned is locked on jazzz it’s a daily podcast on the Utah Jazz so when you tune in you know exactly what you’re going to get summer FanDuel is looking to hook up all customers with booster bonuses daily that’s right there suly for everyone every day all summer long at fanduel.com to get started one play literally one play I’m just literally gonna share one screen with you for one play it’s all we have to share it’s all that matters here it is this is all you need to see about Cody Williams and why we’re so excited he gets it on the left side he pumps left he goes oh he doesn’t go right he goes left he gathers outside the three-point line or excuse me outside the paint he takes one dribble from outside the paint he puts one foot down and he packs it with the left hand okay why does this play have me this excited why does this play have me that excited well let’s walk through the various things that take place on this play to make it so awesome and that is when we look at this play in Cody Williams it’s a skill set that you this is what you draft you don’t get a lot of other players first of all at Colorado there wasn’t much space in the paint so if you watch the key here Kenny Lofton and Taylor Hendricks are The Bigs and they’re not in the paint so there’s NBA space here for Cody Willams we’ve never been able to see Cody Williams operate in this space if you’ve watched Cody Williams so far he has a very short compact almost set shot three which he gets off without a lot of space which forces the defender to come up on him a little bit he’s right-handed so the expectation would be that he wants to go right the defender wanting to keep him out of the middle gets twisted on the jab step now opens up and he gets him left hand but look at where the gather is here if you’re on YouTube and if you’re on audio all set up his gather at this is where length and difference his Gather High Above his head with both hands happens at about 13 to 16 feet on the left side with one big huge stride and he plants one foot down and goes there’s a bunch of things here that are awesome about the the finish in the fall the Jam first off you’ve probably heard this a lot you have to to be a one foot Jumper in the NBA it’s it’s really just not a choice you have to be a one-foot Jumper in the NBA the second thing that is of importance if we think back at some of the better jazz players we’ve watched over the years um or even just a lot of them you think of Gordon Hayward you think of ta uh ton Horton Tucker think of how many guys have you seen drive to the basket and when they get stretched out and they get wide they no longer have any explosiveness Gordon Evolution as a player is that he started to be able to make shorter steps we talk about this all the time you’re going have to have shorter steps in the paint to be able to get up and get on top of the rack well Cody Williams on this play has anything but short steps he takes the a mammoth one two to get to the rack from about 17 feet away and then gets on top of the cup and packs it this is just a skill set you can’t teach should One play yes this is all the tools right here this is why you draft him 10 this is why when I watched him at Colorado he would do things and I would say there’s two players I think can be an All-Star in this draft Reed Shepard and Cody Williams probably didn’t watch enough alexar to be honest to say that but that was my two guys though this is why right here this play in the fourth quarter with 736 left against the Dallas Mavericks if you haven’t seen it go find it because the one foot jump is a half to in the NBA if you’re Wing player and you have to bring the second foot down that allows the defense that Split Second of the second foot down unless it’s a power play to try to draw a foul but if it’s a drive like this if you bring the second foot into play it takes too long you have to coil a little bit and you can’t get to the rim on time before the defense gets there you have zero chance so the and then the second part of this which I just talked about is his ability to spread the thing out the fact that he can take this kind of stride stay on balance and finish and if you go back for the every dayers and remember some of the things I talked about with Cody Williams one of the things I talked about Cody Williams is that what I saw at him in Colorado were these plays where he would show a little burst he’d then not have the strength or the body control to stop himself or make the play but he will eventually but the burst the burst is something that you just can’t teach and you either have or you don’t so if you go back to the very beginning of this play he’s a ball fake with a jab right and he brings it back to a leftand dribble with the right foot sliding in front and a quick first step that’s unteachable also that’s unteachable also this is why Cody Williams was such an exciting draft pick for the Utah Jazz this one singular play with 735 left in the first game in the in the first game in Vegas now there’s some other things as well for example one of the things that’s really interesting is that the first play of the game from Sha Sheldon was a Cody Williams High pick and roll off Kyle filipowski and more and more late fourth quarter the other night in game three we saw Cody Williams make a play with the ball in his hands he is casual he is smooth it all seems easy we’ve talked about a lot he has all the pieces he has a great body he clearly has balance he has fabulous athleticism fabulous athleticism that play that he makes right there that dunk we’ve shown on YouTube or that you’ve seen or that you’re listening to about that’s a play that not a lot of guys can make office stand still being guarded a lot of guys can make it on the run in an open floor setting not a lot of guys can make it of a St still being guarded he’s got touch he’s going to gain strength and his feet are incredible his defensive feet sliding staying in place are just awesome Cody Williams has all the pieces that’s worth being excited about Kyle filipowski Isaiah ker continuing to impress Coler and filipowski frankly in manners that I didn’t think they would now on locked on Jazz Monday edition of locked on jazz is brought to you by my friends over at Murdoch and Kyle filipowski also shined in my mind the other night the Isaiah CER shine literally is how in control he is just how absolutely comfortable he looks in everything he’s doing right now I think he had one turnover last night he just looks comfortable in fact like when Keon got uncomfortable the other night he’s the one who brought the ball up the floor and kind of controlled the ball game this was back in Salt Lake Keon and Walker are done for summer league if you have not heard um but you look at Isaiah ker right now he’s playing 29 minutes the other night and he had one turnover and seven assists and 12 points his shooting still what it is he’s going to have to learn a floater game he’s have to learn a bunch of different things there’s parts but the part that really is stunning to me is how in control of the game he is and how comfortable he seems to be Distributing and passing that is not what I expected to see out of Isaiah ker I thought I’d see this kind of wild downhill game often getting himself in trouble with not quite sure where the next move is scoring a bunch of points because he’s able to just get on top of the cup we haven’t really seen that didn’t get you got to the free throw line only once the other night instead we’ve seen a guy who’s like in control of the game conducting moving it playing it throwing passes once through really impressive Philip psky the other night got to play five out got to play in space and was pretty good his passing skills Tim lome said it best on Kyle filipowski he’s GNA have to learn how to do it differently but he really has an array of skills that are interesting he that left-hand drive he had early in the game against Dallas um is actually similar scoring over the 75 guys is actually similar what he did to Missy who’s uh was drafted I think about 15th or so in the game against Baylor like it’s a low left-and drive to the rack that he then gets up and finishes it seven feet that’s pretty awesome he’s much better on the Move than he is stationary I was concerned when I’ve watched him station he has to really bend down and coil to get up and he can’t do that in the NBA um but his passing skills are solid his understanding of the game he cuts at the right time does a lot of things well it’s going to be interesting to see but his he really has a pretty big array of skills um so I think it was just a super encouraging I mean Cody’s performance 21 points three runs four assists but the individual plays were great Cody’s gonna have to you know he hasn’t go doesn’t go to the free throw line much he doesn’t take contact there’s a lot of steps um that have to take place there Taylor’s loose with the dribble and some aspects Taylor’s still got a lot of offensive Taylor Hendricks a lot of offensive skill development that needs to be had for him to be a successful um highlevel starting NBA player um you know I think Taylor’s completely capable of suddenly getting to be like a 16.8 rebound two assist two block guy by you know what what I say 15 points I mean so that’s two transition a bucket a transition bucket or two a night one or two threes a night so at six we at eight we at 10 an offensive put back gets us to 12 and then some you know something else in the game kind of gets him to 14 or 15 and then certain nights where he hits a bunch of Threes or the corner threes open and the certain nights and and so you suddenly average 15 a night right now he’s not going to be able to get much off the bounce he’s not going to be able to close out and go drive into traffic or close out and read it very well those those don’t look comfortable to him to be able to do that yet um and I’m not super sold right now on some of his lateral defensive stuff which has me a little bothered um because I do think he’s gonna have to play a lot of switching one through four his secondary Rim defense is awesome his timing on block shots is amazing um I do feel like he’s getting beat a lot on the floor but I’m not I gotta watch it’s one of those things that once you think it this is you got to be careful about this as you’re watching so once I’ve thought that which I’ve now thought and I’ve said it out loud and now you’ll think it every time it happens you’ll say oh look he just got beat again what you won’t see is the three times he just styed someone on those dribble drives because you weren’t you nothing bad happened and so you miss those and so it’s really one of those things where I consciously need to watch which that’s why I’m going to Vegas is to see things much more close and personal um to watch and actually see you know in intently like really watch Taylor in open court and decide that’s one of the primary things I’m watching for the game to see whether it’s true or if it’s just that he’s timing three guys and then on the fourth one he gets beaten then I just hear the fear the fourth one right like that’s you can make a lot of mistakes kind of in that thought all right I want to talk about perimeter defense I know weird um in the NBA so I think the more I thought about it this summer the NBA and as we got to the draft that the NBA might have this a little wrong so what do I mean by that what I mean by that is that it feels to me like when when you look at the best perimeter defensive players in the NBA they’re big strong physical brutes and a lot of times I think what happens is we talk about defensive players long lanky and athletic and certainly long lanky in Athletic Works but I do kind of feel like it’s a misnomer that the best defensive players on the perimeter are physical strong imposing unmovable so the best guarded defensive player so I went to bball index which is just an incredibly great site um I really just give them amazing credit and I ran their numbers on primary defense involvement rate which means you have to be very high primary isolation Defender and then your defensive LeBron overall and here’s what came out as the best defenders over the last few years so Jaden McDaniels came out as the number one Defender that came out on this on this chart or one of the best um he’s long and lanky and athletic he fits he’s the one we all talk about but next was the 2021-22 version of matis thel he is a physical imposing beast and then the 2022 23 version of DeAnthony Melton good pickup by The Warriors again physically strong not particularly long and lanky then Drew holiday physically strong Beast then Royce O’Neal in 2021 for Utah that’s physically strong like when you talk about Roy you talk about someone who hits him and bangs off him in this stuff then Dylan Brooks in Memphis in 2223 then Javon Carter small little Pitbull guard who’s in on you he’s not long and lanky Quinton Grimes in New York in 2223 that one’s probably a little bit more athleticism back to Drew holiday 2021 in Milwaukee Lou Dort 2021 in OKC so since 2020 when you look and you rank the best defensive players their big physical strong beasts another Drew holiday next year in Milwaukee another Lou Dort next year so the top 12 guys that go under the best defensive years I’d say Jaden McDaniels 2223 and Quinton Grimes maybe are long and athletic but the other 10 some of which are duplicates are physically strong physical pounding Defenders then herb Jones gets in there okay long lanky that’s like that’s the model that we talk about we talk about Jade m Dan we talk about herb Jones we don’t talk about Lou Dort Dylan Brooks Drew holiday Isaac aoro like these are the best defenders in the NBA and they’re physically beasts Isaac okuro 212 2122 Dylan Brooks interesting Denny Adida in uh who just got traded to Portland got in this looks Alex Caruso great defender I don’t know where you put him he’s not long and lanky Mikel Bridges probably fits into the long and lanky side so there are some of both but it does seem to me that we’re kind of missing the boat when we talk about Defenders now what’s interesting to me is the Jazz have played the long lanky game right Taylor Hendricks gonna be one of our great Defenders Cody Williams gonna be a great defender and what we’re playing is the long and lanky game we’re playing the like let’s see how many long and lanky guys we can have on by the way the filters were 1500 minutes played not a lot means you play 15 to 18 minutes a night and then we just rant putting some of the best defensive players if if you just want to go on the easy one and just use basketball index defens of LeBron score the best defenders are all the bigs right and so you have to get through that Walker you know since 2020 by the way Walker Kessler’s 22 23 years the 13th best then Alex Caruso kicks in if you’re talking non- Center and you get most you know most of the best defens so you have to start adding some perimeter defensive time to get your best defensive players the best defensive players in the game most impactful defensive players are all bigs and that’s when you suddenly get into this and this is what’s so great about bball index I give them such incredible credit is you know they have literally have perimeter defense perimeter isolation defense rating um and so you add that to the list and you figure out you know what what are you getting from that and then you have you know on the other end like who’s primary time spent on the primary primary defensive involvement rate in other words that you’re you’re one of the primary Defenders and then you then you get rolling and that’s what these guys are so that’s that list every single one of these guys in primary defensive involvement rate is super high of the top 25 guys since 2020 I would say of 25 the physical brutes Thal Melton holiday O’Neal Brooks Carter holiday again Deon Murray slides in here i’ go long athletic lud dor oh I got the 1920 I got one too many seasons in here there we go I suddenly had the 19 I didn’t mean have 1920 season there um so let me do that again sorry so of the top 25 guys thel Melton holiday O’Neal Brooks Carter holiday again Dort holiday again Dort Dort again finny Smith a little of each Iota Sumo I’ll give you athletic Isaac auro Dylan Brooks Alex Caruso finny Smith so OG anobi ISO kakuro 17 of the top 25 perimeter defensive Seasons since the 2021 season are done by physical brute Defenders to me that’s that’s kind of interesting all right quick thoughts on what’s happened so far in summer league when we come back maybe this draft class wasn’t so bad today’s edition of locked on jazz is brought to you by our friends over at eay a Motors where the eBay guaranteed fit for your ride or die at 122 Million Parts ebaymotors.com it’s interesting to me how much we thought this draft class was going to be so brutal and yet here early on in summer league they look pretty good excited to go watch them in person uh bad news for Denver who really can’t afford it their rookie Don Holmes out for the year with an Achilles tendon injury um my favorite player of the draft and you know we’ll see what this all means um L uh Reed Shepard in his first two games nine of 17 nine of 15 so 18 of 32 from the field five of 11 from three averaging 22 points five rebounds six assists three blocks and two steals uh I have kind of said um that frankly my viewpoint was go get Reed Shepard and get out of the draft I thought he was that good uh rash has been all right seven of 16 in game one four of 12 and the other so he’s 11 of 28 that’s not great four of 16 from three frankly the fact he can get all the shots off actually matters the most um I mean actually so far the G League the summer league has matched kind of what we thought Olivia SAR is eight of 26 so the number one and number two picks are like SAR is two of 10 from three does have six blocks but this was the story on the draft was that the the top top players were not maybe that great but the fact of the matter was that the next tier of players seemed to be fine Stephen Castle has played one game I’m super curious to see what happens with Stephen Castle’s shooting he went eight of 21 two of six and three had 22 points five rebounds four assists that’s pretty good Ron Holland another one that was super curious to see on his shooting went five of 15 0 of two from three maybe the surprise so far is Rob Dillingham who Minnesota gambled big on the small diminutive guard who’s the eighth pick of the draft he is seven of 2 six to start and two of nine from three averaging went 14 points in one game four in the other Donovan kingan had a big rebounding game went one of eight to start so the top 10 picks so far rash has gotten the shot off which I think is equally as important to have 28 shots off SAR third pick Reed Shepard’s been brilliant fourth pick Stephen Castle we’ll see Holland the fifth pick gets the second game tonight the sixth pick of the draft I’m blanking on as literally I sit here right now who is was it oh uh Saloon he’s played Off the Bench for the Hornets Donovan kingan’s one game was a one for 80 for three Rob Dillingham then Zack Edy was really really good in summer league and matis mulus for the Bulls the pick after Cody Williams was very good 12th and 13th picks are basically out for the year then Bob Carrington for Washington’s been pretty good at 14 and khil we had a good game at 15 so it’s you know kind of the book on this draft was we’ll have to see what you know over time but the that the book on this draft was that once you got out of the top it was going to be pretty good Bob Carrington had 19 points nine rebounds eight assists almost a triple double five of 10 shooting four of eight for three from Washington I liked him a lot um he had run the most picking roles of anyone he was probably to be ready he was he’s a pretty interesting player so that’s a good pick by Washington in the second game when Washington when Reed Shepard and Bob Carrington kind of went head to-head Carrington had 18 points four rebounds five went just five of 16 but another four of 10 from three so pretty nice on that the interesting ones kind of because of their first nights not being as good will be when Portland takes the floor tonight and their second game uh against Philadelphia that’ll be at 5:30 their time 6:30 our time whether or not Donovan kingan has a better game and then the other one to me will be Detroit in the early game today they play Houston uh Houston will be playing its third game already I don’t know if Reed Shepard will play a back toback um but that one is Ron Holland’s second game we’ll see how he shoots it and that one those would be the ones I’ll kind of keep an eye on tonight I don’t know that um Zack Ed will go but if he does Memphis plays today at five six hour time um on ESPNU Boston and the Lakers play tonight that game just doesn’t well if uh maybe if um uh the kid out of kraton place whose name is Blake Baylor shyan um I think this is Boston’s first game of the summer league nope they played uh Miami earlier actually in the summer league shyan in that one went four of nine 13 points six five rebounds six6 I would expect the 23y old college players to be good in summer league they’re still older than everybody else on the floor have a great one this is locked on Jazz we’ll talk to you from Vegas tomorrow thank you very much for tuning in what jazz tonight we have reports on that one if you’re on YouTube we’ll send you to the first ever National 247 Channel on YouTube if you’re on audio big six and 60

One play in Summer league showed it, Cody Williams has all the tools. Jab right go left on a swing through, gather at 17 feet and take to mother may I steps to the rack for a one footed jam at the rack. Cody Williams shows it all and David Locke, radio voice of the Utah Jazz and Jazz NBA Insider breaks down the play and why it should excite us all about Cody Williams.

The Utah Jazz other rookies Isaiah Collier and Kyle Filipowski also have shown that their skill set is NBA ready. Collier has shown a control and maturity that has impressed David Locke so far this summer league. While, Filipowski will have to learn a new game in the NBA he has all the skills that are needed to be an impactful player.

Locke takes a look at defensive players in the NBA and thinks the NBA is getting what makes an elite defender wrong. It is brute not an athelte.

Then Locke takes a quick scan of the early summer league action and how players are performing and what it says initially about this years draft.

  1. Not to be Debby Downer, but what are you guys peddling? Locke must be smoking wacky weed in the morning. Williams looked terrible at the 3 Summer League games in Utah. Do you think your fans are asleep?

  2. That was an incredible play by Cody Williams. He was unbelievable after being up and down in SLC Summer league. He plays well on defense as well staying in front of his guys.

  3. People are saying C-Dub can't shoot. umm did you not just see him score 30 on the Mavs on Saturday? He shot 41% from 3 for Colorado last year, yeah it was on limited attempts but who's to say the Jazz can't continue to develop his shot? I had my doubts about C-dub during the SLC Summer league but after his performance against the Mavs in Vegas, I'm convinced and super hyped to see more of C-Dub this year. He is not Josh Jackson 2.0!

  4. How many times have you said the summer league is worthless for scouting and now you scout Williams. Just saying Locke. Thanks for the show.

  5. 3 new draftees show signs of promise……
Reed Sheppard – should be future Jazz trade acquisition; however, Rockets probably won't trade him, even for 10 future draft picks…….
The guy is showcasing, but will it transition against veteran players? time will tell……
Filipowski can shoot, create, and pass better than Kessler. His defense still unfolding…….
If i was Kessler i wouldnt get too comfortable, a trade could be around the corner!
