2K25 NBA Summer League Media Availability: Wizards vs. Rockets

Cody you guys battled back there and they were able to pull away what do you think made the difference I think they had a level of physicality that uh we did not respond very well to uh started early uh bled over into halftime we came out we showed some fight and uh you know they got a couple of back breaking plays and we were not able to recover uh to me I think it’s a lesson you want to learn now when you look at this box score it’s going to be really hard to win a game when you attempt 71 field goals and they attempt 90 right so all the physical stats were not there for us tonight they outrebounded us can’t give up 17 uh offensive rebounds for 22 Second Chance points can’t give up 66 points in the paint um and then we can’t turn the ball over that leads to 22 points so you know there’s a lot of things here that uh we need to use to our advantage and that’ll start with film tomorrow how much of that Co I know you don’t want to make excuses but how much of that do you attribute to some of your younger guys uh how much just simply they have to fill out physically given how young they are but I think the big thing is and you know I’ve learned this during my years in the G league is that you have to have a Hunger Games mentality and I always tell my guys that’s what the g- league is and right now there are guys who are out here fighting for their basketball lives and so when you come in with three first round draft picks playing I told those guys at halftime you got a bullseye in your back you’re going to get their best effort every time they’re trying to take your lunch money it’s kill or be killed type of a mentality and today they came out and they wanted to take our lunch money and they did now you’ll learn as you go you take these lumps and you evaluate some of the technical elements and then of course you fill out your body you stay in the weight room you eat right you do all those things um and at the end of the day you’ll grow physically you’ll mature you know but at the end of the day I still think there was more fight when we showed it we came back and then we just didn’t have enough to get over the hump but to me true toughness is not a physical thing it’s not about how much weight you can push true toughness is the ability to get on to the next most important thing it’s the ability to fight adversity and have a short memory right it’s the ability to not allow a bad offensive possession lead to a bad defensive possession the game connects so much on both sides of the ball that we’ve got to really make sure we stay present in the moment and committed to foundational pieces and things that we do on a daily basis how did Kean do as a primary initia ball handler yeah I mean I think he had some really nice moments you know in a game like this the hard part is is we’re going to focus on a couple of the nice moments on the offensive side but we’ve really got to pay uh mind to both sides of the ball right and again overall we just did not get the job done so there were some nice flashes some nice plays here and there we’ll look at those we’ll evaluate why they worked uh and then we’ll take the other possessions and evaluate well why did it go wrong and uh you know from there we’ll try to clean some stuff up but at the end of the day we were a 25 assist team last game and tonight we were a 14 assist team so the ball wasn’t moving we weren’t getting on to the next action uh we weren’t getting getting one Domino to fall and making quick consecutive decisions and caught up to us at the end of the day in terms of the physicality as far as Alex Goes look like he kind of felt that on the offensive end as well just now you see him through two games where do you think he’s coming along well you you can never come into a game or a possession you do not you should not dictate what happens you can’t predetermine what you’re going to do I’m going to go take this guy to the basket right the game is about decisions it’s about reading and reacting to what the defense does so there are going to be times when we should look to rip drive it times when we should shoot it if they’re backed off but there are also just times where they’re are good defensive position so instead of forcing something what we need to do is get on to the next action we need to create coverage confusion we need to uh peel their switches we need to get down and out we need to get the ball moving and so I think tonight there was a little bit too much predetermination but we came in and said hey all right I’m going to go at this guy this possession maybe I was open last possession and didn’t get it so now it’s my turn my turn basketball gets you beat Team Basketball allows you to fight through that adversity and that’s what helped us cut it to seven so you know we’ll we’ll show the good with the uh Improvement and and we’ll try to lay another brick tomorrow we’ve been talking about laying a foundation right I thought we laid bricks during training camp thought we laid a brick against Atlanta uh thought we laid a brick on our in between day today we didn’t lay a brick so it’s up to us to get back to work are you are you seeing that Alex predetermined or the I’m saying it was everybody right because when you look at this box score it’s it’s not one person that uh that did it but what it is is it’s a domino effect right so one decision to maybe keep it when I shouldn’t have because the defense was loaded and leads to another decision and it just kind of spirals from there so um you know all of our guys are learning it’s the beauty of it so to me I told them this could be the best day ever they they were looking at me sideways how could this be the best day ever this could be the best day ever because the sooner you learn this lesson uh the sooner you can grow from it and I think that’s the only thing that we can look to do right now team played but I wanted to ask you about how you individually played uh how did you feel in terms of being a a lead initiator lead ball handler felt good I had too many turnovers I I need to work on and just you know a learning experience overall was there any sort of um were they doing anything specific to to cause the turnovers you just referred to or is there something specifically that you can improve there it’s it’s an improvement overall it’s a learning experience I give credit to them cuz you know they they’re physical they had you know active hands but it’s on us too to you know execute a game plan I think we did execute what we worked on didn’t really play as a team I we played you know before it shows on the statute and you know that’s what caus the turnovers too what’s the last few weeks kind of been like for you going from the draft to Washington coming here what’s it been like for you how you been adjusting to all that it’s been great it’s been the experience you know I’ve been able to do that with bub and Alex it’s a great experience great guys and I’m just happy to do it how well did you know those guys before coming here um not very well actually I just played against bub one time talked to him at the combine obviously so it was cool Alex you just you know just started talking so it’s cool they have you playing one through four where do you feel most comfortable in your I feel comfortable everywhere yeah where do you see yourself playing Just naturally in position me for me it doesn’t matter I know I could create for myself create for my teammates I just know I could be very impactful on the offensive and and also on the def defensive and creating shots for myself and my teammates for yourself what are you looking to get out of this this entire summer league experience just getting reps in and be able to learn and get up to speed to the NBA um basketball we’re still learning about you so forgive the ignorance at what age did you start did you play point guard what we would consider a point guard was it like you were very young or was it throughout the whole I’ve always played point guard since I was young and did you have some sort of like grow spurt and and when was when was it I was 15 probably like 5’8 and yeah it just grew sense I know um Kyle stopped by practice Kyle kma stopped by practice yesterday um what was the experience like getting to because I I think that’s probably your first time meeting him uh what was it like having him there and did he impart any wisdom at all I mean I met with him in Washington before I just know he’s a really cool guy you know I’m happy to these guys that are in the team coming to see us you know see us play it’s cool talking about Alex and Bub earlier like what have you seen from their games but also their personalities as you’re starting to get to know them a little bit they’re all around players they can play both on the court and I think that’s the emphasis you need to you know work on and show that we we were brought in to you know install that you know habit and that you know discipline to play on the both ends of the floor that’s number one and then on personalities they’re just great people I mean you know we have great chemistry together it looks like we’ve been playing a long time together so it’s cool [Music] yeah um I thought you know they just they wanted to win more than us they came out with the right intensity and physicality that they needed to to win the game and we didn’t match that so that’s how you lose a game as um a lot of good things from both of them I mean offensively we want them to be aggressive and confident and defensively you know Bub was out there they you know um you know working guarding guys coming out ball and Alex R is a really good rim protector so I’m liking what I’m seeing out of both of them are you here to prove a point you know coming back time I is this something special for you yeah yeah uh definitely I mean you know anytime I get the chance to you know play and have fun I choose to do so but um this is more just an opportunity for me and I’m trying to take advantage of it yeah um I would say just being more confident with my game play definitely working on uh you know shooting the shooting the three ball but most importantly just you know finding my Niche and doing what I do best which is defending do yeah um every time I’ve been here it’s just all about running and being physical you know guys are coming out here they’re hungry they want contracts they want to feed their fam so um it’s just about matching matching that intensity and working as hard as they do had a pretty nice win the other night like what kind of identity was coming out for your team maybe you guys can carry over yeah um I mean I wish we could have carried over our defense from that game I mean we held Atlanta to below 40 from the field and below 30 from three but um today I mean we just weren’t really locked in coming into the game we didn’t execute the game plan
