Booker Is On An Olympic Super Team But How Are Things With Suns?

Booker Is On An Olympic Super Team But How Are Things With Suns?

[Music] what is up everybody we are out here at Circa and Stadium swim that’s right we’ve talked about it all week but it is beautiful and you can see it right behind us it is pH andx Sons we were brought to you by CA today I am espo that’s Flex that’s Saul and gentlemen we had some basketball and breakfast today as team USA took on Australia uh in Abu Dhabi it was a interesting game uh for the USA but Devin Booker didn’t start but he sure as held closed that game for USA I mean Devon has been really really good in these two games uh he’s been methodical he’s been smart he’s been calculated he’s made the right play he’s made the right decision he’s had several hockey assists that you know have have led to nice easy buckets uh and I think just overall Team USA is is is surprisingly been uh really good at just sharing the ball um outside of a few instances here and there I think everybody’s been pretty solid Devon Booker has just been very very impressive man you could see why Team USA would trust somebody like him down the stretch of a game to be able to make the smart play and get a bucket whenever necessary yeah it’s big time it’s big time and and it’s great that he’s doing it at this stage with this level of competition and teammates very mature uh Steve cerr trust him uh he just he just makes the right play all the times and when you’re playing in F competition versus the world and much different in the NBA you just want guys that are going to go out there make the right plays and and when given the opportunity be a killer and he showed a little bit of that today uh in both ways closed out the game for them so good for dein Booker 16 points three rebounds two assists like you said sa a handful of hockey assist where he was fantastic on that 7even to seven from the free throw line uh but what I love is he he was vintage Devon booger uh second half he gets the call to start second half takes over the first few minutes of that end of the game you know the last few minutes of the fourth quarter he takes over there uh in terms of he had that great assist to halberton had the free throws to close it out also had a jumper that helped uh uh helped kind of hold off Australia as well but there’s not we talk about it all the time but the the international stage is going to see it yet again now there’s nothing overly flashy about what Devon Booker does but he’s surgical about it he is a guy that gets to the spot hits the shot and does it even when he’s got a guy’s hand in his face he had that unbelievable at uh layup in the in the second half at the start of it that he made that had no business making he was fantastic hit that uh shot when he got fouled uh and hit the floor I love just watching the ex ution that Deon Booker has out there and the headiness that he has he’s so efficient he’s so methodical like it’s it’s really cool when you start to see players get to that part of their career where they’re not rattled and they just go about their process at a high high level like that’s what I love to see and Devon Booker has been doing that for several years now um and now with t Team USA you just feel like it’s kind of accentuated it a little bit more because of the talent that is surrounding him at such a high level um the other thing I I I love is that this year or this time around with the Olympics versus last time last time I felt like you know he was one of those guys that was like 7 8 9 10 kind of range in terms of uh productivity and playing time and contribution to the team um he played good but you know he he didn’t he didn’t get a ton of run uh in the in the last Olympics this time I feel like he’s going to be a very important piece to them winning a a gold medal I feel like he’s going to be you know in that top six range um and I would I would I wouldn’t be shocked if he was closing a lot of these games out with whoever else is going to be on the floor with him because he’s that important and he’s that trustworthy more importantly than anything else I mean in in the last Olympics he he wasn’t the focal point but I mean he started he started on that gold medal team so they trusted him to play defense make the right plays he wasn’t putting the offensive output out but uh again methodical smart this is why a lot of players around the NBA think about potentially playing with Devon Booker one day cuz they’re games don’t they don’t have to sacrifice their games when they play with Devon he makes the game so easy he’s able to allow people to still play their game and kind of fit in wherever he needs to and that’s a unique skill and that’s a unique uh skill that a lot of superstars don’t have being able to get mine while still being a team guy and allowing everybody else to be who they are so uh this is why a Chris Paul Uh Kevin Durant and and Brad be this is why guys want to come to Phoenix and play with Devin Booker and this is a stage that shows you that well yeah Devon talked about how he he didn’t care if he had to do the little things that’s what he was there to do he understands uh his role on Team USA which is vastly different than his role in Phoenix let’s be let’s be very clear about that but I it’s funny that you mentioned that because I do feel like the stuff that he’s done in Phoenix and because it it’s been obviously harder because you don’t have as much talent around you in that in those instances it kind of prepared him at a high level for this because everything is just looks so much easier right now because he knows the guys around him are super talented he doesn’t have to force anything he just let the game come to him and because of that you’re seeing his Dynamic playmaking ability at variety of different levels based on what he’s had to experience playing for the Suns yeah can uh sorry I didn’t mean to cut you off can can we not lie though it hurts to watch him play with tyres Alberton when you look at that you go oh yeah that could have been Phoenix to man that passed to the corner for the three and I was just like I don’t even want to tweet this out right now that was a play of game too it was that was that was the that was the thing that really uh kind of stopped the Australia run and and kept that game with the you know the back toback hle 3s yeah and in particular that great look that that book got him on that second one uh I do Wonder though he wasn’t playing point guard right a lot he was he was he was more of that natural two position that that we saw him in for so much of his early career does that make you wish we got to see more of that in Phoenix last year and hope we could to see more of it of this year of course yeah I mean that’s that’s his natural position right I it’s his natural position but I don’t take anything from this because you don’t have that Talent when you’re at Phoenix like you’re going to have to do several other things as opposed to that so and I and I will say this I I I know what you’re I know where you’re getting at and I do agree he needs him coming off the ball is better suited for his game um but you know I I think he’s capable it just you know it just didn’t work out at a high level like we wanted to this year but I think he’s fully capable I think he’s showing that I I would much all you need is somebody to get the ball up the court that okay stagger when they stagger the minutes I want to see him with mon Morris more than uh than other guys I think like I know I know it could help Brad too but I think book being able to just be book and not have to worry about you know you know starting the offense bringing the ball up any of that stuff and letting him just cook at times is what is what I need to see I need to see that with Devin Booker because it’s why he became who he was I I I think it’s more about balance uh he can do both but I think last year the balance shifted way towards Point book and I think you got to have a healthier balance if you can find a way to get book off the ball and be his natural self maybe 60% of the time and then 40% of the time he’s Point book that’s a much healthier balanced than what it was last year it felt like last year in my opinion it was more like 7525 book was kind of on the ball and then every now and then you would see him go back to the Devon Booker we know and I think the sweet spot is just finding a healthier balance and allowing him to do both but putting him in positions to do what he does best a little bit more I need it to be 7030 I I need it to be more than Bradley Beal has to step up uh in with the starters and be that point guard that’s the role he has to accept and when books out there with with the second unit I need to see Monte with him what you said is why people are killing Brad Beal yep because you now you’re asking Brad not to be Brad to help book so that I don’t want that either I but my path to my path to a championship is Devon Booker being Devon Booker and Bradley Beal figuring out how to be that guy because I’m sorry if Deon Booker isn’t being Deon Booker and Kevin Durant ain’t being Kevin Durant I don’t care what Bradley also ifad Bradley Beal same thing so but but here’s my thing if Bradley Beal does that and this I’m not I’m not arguing with your take I’m just saying Brad gets a bad rap right now if Brad did that and Devin became Devon more but Brad’s numbers sacrificed are we going to hear people say Brad Beal sucks okay what hear but does it matter if people online are saying Brad Beal sucks if he’s out there he’s averaging 16 and say seven assists and they’re winning what difference does it make if people are saying Bradley Beal sucks cuz you’re winning and Bradley Beal uh and the Suns that should all it should be all that matters not can I put up 26 points like I did in Washington because we saw what that was in Washington it was crap yeah but again people are going to go and say 16 points of game seven assist $52 million doesn’t add up that’s what they’re going to say and and it’s our job in this space that people that cover the Suns all the time to actually Hammer that down and and and be able to articulate the fact that hey don’t just look at Brad’s numbers look at the sacrifice and hey by the way look at how much better Devon is playing now that Brad is sacrificing so um that’s the that’s the hard part the hard part is getting people to understand that Brad is sacrificing the most look I’m going to look right in the camera and Suns you can use this as your marketing slogan if you want the narrative win the title that’s that’s the entire uh you know ethos of this season is The Narrative should not matter you do whatever it takes uh to win and if that means sacrifice ing from uh Bradley Beal because it gets the best out of the other two guys I think it’s what you need to do uh I’d be remiss if I did not give out a shout out to our Boy The Thunder from Down Under jock landale who uh had one hell of a game he was a 9 of 12 from the field today with uh an outstanding performance he had uh wound up with 20 points he had seven rebounds six assists two steals uh for the Australian national team as uh they couldn’t pull it off USA won 98 uh 92 but jock had a great performance as well and uh you know what I think our boys with the phnx Cardinals are going to have a great performance uh but we’re going to take a break and we’re going to talk to you more about what the national perspective is but I think our boys with the Arizona Cardinals uh PHX Cardinals are going to have a great performance when it comes to Miami uh they have their great uh tailgate trip out to Miami this year and I’m looking forward to to that trip uh it’s going to be fantastic you can take part in it as well uh all I know you’re going to be part of that trip uh and it’s obvious you’re trying to get that tan uh ready for Miami with the with the guns out today how excited are you for the uh trip to Miami with the Cardinals I mean it’s Miami I mean what’s not to like I think we got a little preview of Miami out here actually yesterday cuz uh Colombia vers Columbia versus Argentina soccer brought out quite the crowd to the pool yesterday it was pretty cool it’s pretty dope so uh yeah South Beach man you can’t go wrong with that it’s going to be a great time Johnny Bo the whole Squad Damon uh Britain like we’re going to have a whole crew out there we’re going have some Suns alums out there like or I’m sorry Cardinal alums out there it’s going to be a fantastic time so please join us I’m sure you could talk EJ into going too if you wanted a Sons Alum I’m sure I wouldn’t have to twist his arm too hard hey uh we’re out here at uh Circa Resort and Casino as you can see Stadium swim right behind us I was telling you about uh the the LED screen the 143 FTX 40t LED screen yesterday with all the games you can see it right behind us right now and uh it is unbelievable I think we’re going to watch the Home Run Derby out here I know that people were watching the soccer games yesterday out here at the pool and it is unbelievable uh it’s open 365 days a year and as you know back at home in Phoenix you basically can swim that all that time where you can hear out in Vegas as well six uh pools two Spas beautiful Cabanas which we’re looking at uh right now it is unbelievable and the two swim up bars are fantastic but that’s not all their casino is spectacular 7,000 square foot Cino with two levels and we were out there at the blackjack tables uh last night and a little roulette and it was fantastic for the whole All City family so we highly recommend you come out here and experience Stadium swim and watch your favorite teams at Circa Resorts and casinos and uh you know Wireless bills what is this day four day five for summer league that we’re out here uh we’ve had a chance to catch up with plenty of national media members and get their perspective on what the Suns did this off season and our friend Barbie Bobby Marx was kind enough to or Barbie Barbie Barbie Mar Bobby Bob Bobby Marx that was Vinnie Lago it is Vinnie loo and Barbie MOX are out here I sound like I’m from Boston now Bobby marks from ESPN was kind enough to uh catch up with us and talk to us about Matt isp’s approach to the second apron and the off season yeah I mean it’s nice to have an owner that’s willing to write a $200 million luxury tax and you know certainly the Josh aoi signing puts some over I think $400 million and tax in in salary it’s a record for right now here um I think certainly when you kind of go all in which they did um certainly with the Kevin Durant trade and getting Bradley Beal um you’re really at a point of no return right I mean it’s you know signing okoji whether to keep or use down the road um going out and you know bringing back some of your own players in in a minimum Market Grayson Allen extension Royce O’Neal which I think is one of the better free agent deals um they were able to do um and then drafting well certainly with the Ryan dun pick and certainly Oso um it’s a nice luxury to have an owner willing to commit um the resources to keep this team um you know at a championship level here and and certainly you go out and hire Mike buer too to add to that but yeah I’ve been in it where uh we’ve done that taken that approach and then all of a sudden you wake up the next morning and they’re like yeah we don’t want to spend anymore so hopefully the results kind of justify what the what the cost of the product is yeah look I know that he didn’t say anything necessarily new there that we haven’t heard uh that from our group but it’s nice when you hear it from basically the uh predominant capologist in the league saying that the Suns made The Savvy moves you know I think what he said at the end there is is really the the thing that sticks out is um you know sometimes these owners they do wake up the next day and they’re like I don’t want to spend this kind of money anymore you know what I mean and then they want you know they want changes to be had I’m not saying ISBN company are going to do that but I will say that at some point you you you you want to spend responsibly and I think that there’s some things that they had to take advantage of because of the situation with the new CBA um that put them in a really tough and awkward position uh it sucks they they wanted to go you know balls to the wall and then all of a sudden these new rules are trying to restrict them from doing that and so I think as the as time moves on they’ll kind of manipulate and figure out what’s the best way to really use their their dollar and get the most out of this especially if the Suns aren’t able to win a championship here in the next two years because you don’t want to spend frivolously just for the sake of spending frivolously you want to make sure that you’re getting the biggest bang for your buck and I think uh right now depending on the results in the future is going to dictate that yeah I I just think this was all calculated they knew what they were getting into when they got into it they knew that this second apron was coming uh they know the team they have and so they’re going all in but I do believe there’s a two-year window there’s a two-year window where they expect to spend this type of money and then you get to 2026 and you can kind of reset the books and Rec calculate but I I think Matt is handling this perfectly and you’re starting to see some signs of what spending that type of money does to organizations especially after you’re successful you know Boston won a championship this year and within like 48 Hours of winning the championship the owner said I’m selling the team because I can’t pay 9915 million to my starting five I also think it was oh I saw that I could get upwards of 6 s billion dollar sure I’m in for that that’s that’s part of it too you know you you so you got other teams that are you got a guy like Balmer right now that has money to burn but in some way shape or form didn’t want to give a fourth year to Paul George right so the money stuff does it does uh have an impact and you can’t spend recklessly Reckless amount of money for a long time and and get away with it I the the good thing about what Matt is doing is I think Matt and and the group that came in they knew that they were going to have to do this for a short me period of time and we’re in that short period so as long as they capitalize in the next two years it’ll be all good and if they don’t there’ll be a reset bum the Clippers are exactly the the the kind of the picture of this right they had a team for about three or four year period that they thought could win a title um they didn’t come close really they got as close as they got was 2021 and then since then it’s been you know first or second round or bust and so I think they they Balmer looked at that and said it’s not worth the money that I’m spending to do this we could probably get pretty close to those these amount of wins without having to sacrifice another 75 million a year to a player so let’s go ahead and move on from Paul George and see where we can go from here yeah I think the I think the Suns have strategic outs I think they have contingency plans for all situations here and I think we I think you can see what those would be if things go sideways in the first 40 to 50 games I mean there’s there’s ways to make moves to potentially lessen that while still trying to figure out how to make the future brighter and I think that’s the way you got to do this right you got to understand each and every each and every outcome that could potentially happen and how you work this situation it’s fullest and if you don’t you go out and you hire people that do right uh the cap guy Matt Matt tellum right they they went out there they were like okay he’s the best in the game let’s get him in here so we can kind of figure out how we can manipulate the tax uh the the different you know rules in the league to try and take advantage of certain things and you you want those types of people in your organization and that’s why I feel like the Suns have gone about this uh smart like they every every move while on the outside is like why are you paying this much money for this player has been a calculated move onto what would be best for this organization and hey and make no bones about it the Suns have limits too they have limits into what they wanted to go to do like they weren’t going to pay Royce O’Neal like $20 million a year because somebody else is going to offer them x amount of dollars right they there’s a certain limit to how far they would have gone uh but they were able to negotiate deals that were smart for them including Royce O’Neil including Josh aogi and they’re going to take advantage of and again you talked about outs right Josh and kogi second year out there’s other things that they positioned themselves to take advantage of moving on from like 26 uh 2026 and Beyond so again if you’re calculated and you’re smart and you have a plan you’re going to be okay yeah I mean and I think you bring you guys brought up Josh aogi I think that is a prime example where they learned from last off seon and Rec something that was probably a missed opportunity they had the ability to do that with jock they didn’t right uh and they decided to go with a cheaper option uh in Drew EU Banks rather than uh overpay a little bit for for a known commodity in in jock to potentially trade or whatever or have him prove he could be the backup center they didn’t it cost him last year right this year they looked at Josh aogi and they said you know what we’re not going to make that mistake and I think tellum probably told him the smart way to do this is to do the slight overpay and have the out and see I mean it’s very much what Houston did with jock it was 8 million with a with an out after after a year and I think it’s it’s really smart the way they approach it and I I am very interested to see how it goes but uh Bobby marks also talked a little bit about the guys that they signed this offseason was a fan of that as well well listen Monty moris was hurt last year in in Detroit and then certainly minutes kind of went up and down in Minnesota but I think if they get the player that was in Washington um basically 5 to1 assisted turnover ratio kind of like on a minimum um I mean that’s a really good value Mason I had in this was a long time ago in in Brooklyn here um solid big you know certainly kind of a you know Rim Runner kind of different than nkic I would say um and then you bring back Damen and then you bring back bu bow and certainly aoji um I thought they’ve had a nice listen it this we get caught up in the transaction game where Pho whether it be Philadelphia or New York these teams that go out and make these high splashes and every team wants that I live in Florida my Miami Heat fans want that the team turned over and it’s just not it’s not possible so you’re kind of dealt with whatever restrictions you have but you add two really good players in a draft and then you kind of find complimentary players to your core guys I mean and that’s the reality of it I know we we still hear son well they haven’t done enough this off season well they played within the rules they did what they could and you know to Bobby’s point I I think they did the best uh with it yeah I mean what else did you want them to do you know they were limited and you have to acknowledge that before you start to say that they had a terrible off season you’re not you just weren’t going to be able to pull another rabbit out of the hat like I feel like to some degree getting Kevin Durant and Bradley Beal kind of fooled the fan base a little bit into thinking that anything is really possible at any given moment and that they were going to be able to maybe flip Brad Beal for you know some Superstar out there but that just was not realistic that wasn’t living in reality what the suns were limited with in terms of contracts um it was a real thing and so they took advantage of every opportunity they could they acquired pieces that they thought were going to be consistent enough to get them to a to a you know further in the playoffs and you got to live with the results well yeah I’m just going to say when you look at the bench Flex compared to last year I mean Monte Morris instead of Jordan Goodwin or Eric Gordon uh AO you’ve got Mason plumbley rather than Drew Eubanks then you look at the kbds the udana nabies you’ve got Dunn and Oso there as well you kept Josh aogi I mean you now add Roy O’Neal uh or Grayson Allen to that bench whichever way they go with starters I don’t know how anybody can argue uh that they didn’t get better on that second year careful Flex it’s a trap I set it up so he argues in we said all this about these guys last year so I’m I’m I’m cautiously proceeding with optimism but I’m not going to make any declarations that they’re just better come on they have a track record right Flex that’s the difference here you were you were hope you had a hope and a prayer with a lot of guys you signed last year you’ve got some proven with at least with Monte Morris and Mason plumbley yeah no I think I think some of the best moves moves that the Suns have done lately are moves no one knows about scouting Department player evaluation um you go out there you get Mason plumbley you get Monty Morris you actually do a good job of bringing in a Ryan dun and the oso Garo so those are ways to kind of counteract what you’re doing with the cab and with the money because you’re looking at guys that can grow on rookie contracts and so I know the Suns May changes this year they brought in different evaluators again in The Scouting department and the and the internal NBA scouting Department um and they they they got more mature they got more mature more experienced guys that have a track record you’re not kind of rolling the dice and hoping does kbd find it does UDA find it does Jordan Goodwin find it does this guy does you know chamei meu find it those were really gambl we’re in Vegas we out here gambling those were real gambles these were more calculated what they did this year so I think they learned from last year and I think we’ll have a better product because I feel like Today’s Show is like the infomercial when they go don’t take our word for it and then they cut to somebody with a I know a testimonial about it well we’ve got Michael Scotto from Hoops hype and uh he talked about the Suns bringing back their own guys this offseason oh I think certainly for Phoenix getting back bbo I’ve always liked bbo I think he’s he’s a really good talent it’s just about harnessing it um Damen Lee really good shooter and when you can get a guy that can shoot around 40% on a minimum deal that’s a win um but I think you touch on also Royce O’Neal uh Roy is a guy and I had him in Brooklyn with the Nets um so Royce is a guy that can fill multiple roles as a wing guy he could play a little bit of small ball four if you need him and a guy that is a really good locker room guy for the value they got to have him under a midlevel uh exception territory I thought it was a fair deal I think maybe someone that if it would be 3 years instead of four but um you know that’s that’s the only thing that maybe was a little bit of a surprise but uh Royce O’Neal and Kevin Durant in particular uh good friends and certainly uh that chemistry is going to be needed as Phoenix tries to take that next step this year for yeah I mean we were talking about bench we didn’t even talk about the bull bll Factor uh you know we briefly mentioned uh you know Royce O’Neal being part of that but I think The Bu B reigning could wind up being the most underrated move of the off seon I I’m going to go I I will I said I wasn’t going to make any declarations but here I’ll make a declaration that was the most important part of this offseason in my opinion was re bringing back B bow because I truly believe B bow is on the cusp of being a Bonafide contributor on this team more consistently I think he’s going to fit way better in Bud system he’s going to have more freedom to do a a variety of different things and more importantly than anything else I think he finally gained some confidence because of that consistency that he was able to show last year and the the level by which he was able to show it I just think it wasn’t a fluke like he’s he was kind of a gimmicky kind of player in terms of like notoriety and Fanfare and stuff like that but I legitimately was impressed by his level of productivity last year I thought he should have played a lot more than he did he’s got some weaknesses on the defensive side for sure but I think his offensive game is is undenied able and I think he can contribute at a higher level so I’m really excited to see what he’s going to be able to contribute to this team we talked about the bench unit he’s one guy we don’t really mention much about that bench unit because if he plays at a high level that whole bench unit is a completely different animal especially if Grayson is coming off the bench with him as well and Monte Morris now you got three Bonafide scorers and you got to be excited about that yeah bo bo B’s the wild card he really is the Wild Card of this team and H I’m happy for Bo B because we saw Drew Eubanks get two years 10 million with the year he had he got more money which is insane yeah so you I know I know for a fact Bo could have got more money but but he was mature he sat back and he saw exactly what we’re saying uh this is an opportunity where I can grow I can grow with people that I admire he’s working with KD that’s important all summer getting at work I thought he was fantastic I thought he was a guy that really brought brought the juice last year every time he checked in the fans and the crowd went went crazy he brought an energy that no one else on that team can bring and that itself as a skill set so his ability to do freakish unicorn stuff at that size offensively now you add that with better coaching better continuity a little bit more maturity and experience across the board and he could be the wild card he could be the guy that we look back down the road and say man that was probably the best thing they did this offseason yeah I think Kevin Durant helped start to lock him last year and I think Mike butin hoer will finish the job this year and put him in positions to succeed I really think he’s could wind up being which this is a far cry from where I was last off season the beginning of the season I I do agree with you Saul I think he could wind up being a very important part of what they’re doing with that second unit and God forbid any any injuries hit at any point he could help you offensively in multiple ways so I’m excited to see what he does there but uh Michael Scotto also waigh in on Monte Morris and Mason plumbley yeah you know I thought uh the Monte Morris deal was a little interesting because Phoenix had been aggressively pursuing Kyle Lowry you as well touched on it in your reporting as well um and I thought Kyle would have been an interesting fit for them but once uh Philadelphia excuse me made their moves and got Paul George for him for him to stay close to home and have maybe a little bit of a clearer path to championship contention in the East uh that played in in Kyle Lowry’s return to to Philly there but um you know Mason plumbley a guy that uh another former net that I had previously um in my turf but a guy that uh low maintenance can fill uh up a box score in a in a variety of ways moving the ball maybe sometimes on a hockey assist um but a good value for him and he also some some ties from Brooklyn that I think could have played into that uh Matt tell the new assistant GM for the Phoenix Suns he was in Brooklyn when Mason was a Youngster there before he eventually got moved to Portland so I I think that some of those relationships had something to do with it and quite frankly the opportunity to play I I think he is going to have a roll off the bench for this team and get consistent minutes so if you’re a Suns fan look out for that look last last off season I think we were more bullish than the national media was on what the Suns had done we bought into a lot of the hope with some of those guys this year it seems like the national media really uh you know Michael Bobby others we’ve talked to really like the moves that they made especially with Monte Morris uh and Mason plumbley that makes me feel a little bit better to be honest about this that we aren’t uh falling to a similar trap as as last off season I feel a lot better I mean hindsight is the best thing right you when you made these deals last summer you never you didn’t even see a second of the big three so you didn’t know what their flaws were you didn’t know how things were going to work out now he had a whole season to look at that evaluate and kind of plug the pieces so love the Mason deal love the Monty deal love the fact that they brought back some continuity and in in Monty’s situation this is a guy that played with Brad bill in Washington this is a guy that has some chemistry with Mason in Denver right and so you’re you’re already coming in with a little bit of an advantage in Camp cuz these guys are predominantly probably going to be playing on the court together a lot so you already got some built-in continuity and and the word we kept using last year was chemistry and continuity so they got they kind of got ahead of it this summer they said you know what no more gambling no more hoping for the best let’s get guys that we know can work with each other plug the holes and with better coaching yeah I I’m I’m really optimistic that this team can add five to seven more wins uh from the 40 49 that they which is interesting because I saw some early lines 46 and A2 I’m is where they have have the sun’s uh win total at so I that’s interesting that you say that so what are do you feel better with the national media uh looking at this off season as as a success at least from plumbley and Ian I I think I think they got better I I just don’t know how much better you know what I mean like are we talking about you know we cleaned up a few things on the offensive and defensive sides to the point where we’re going to win you know eight or nine more games I don’t know but I do think that they’ve gotten when I say better I mean I think they found players that are going to be more consistent and that’s the thing that that they really struggled with last year and if they can and if that is the case then yes they will be they will be inherently better than they were last year cuz again game after game we didn’t know what Eric Gordon was going to do we didn’t know what you know Drew EU Banks was going to do we didn’t know what anybody was going to do it felt like that we we got in the off season that’s why they revamped the roster way through the year so is the if these guys come in and they can be a little more consistent then yeah I think that’s it’s absolutely a win I will also say you guys made the money Monte Morris Point um I wonder if Bradley Beal will be part of that initial second unit you know rotation um with Monte Morris because of that familiarity I wonder if him being out there is going to make him feel a little bit more comfortable um and not as you know frenetic as it felt like at times last year to find himself yeah I mean I know I said early in the show that you I want book to be able to be booked but there are opportunities for Beal uh to be be too with with Monte Morris and I think that’s important as much as I want him to to focus on being that point guard I think there will be opportunities for him to be in that comfortable spot with a Monte Morris too and and that is an underrated part of what they did with the offseason and I’m not afraid to make declarations I think everybody on this program knows unlike you saying you’re not I stick with they’re going to win 55 to 60 games in this regular season yeah you look at Mike buen H’s track record you look at the talent you look at what they fortified which were the issues that they had last year that cost them some games uh late in those games with fourth quarter collapses and kept them out of being able to be in other games that they should have won as well I think this team has done enough to make themselves a very very good regular season team and then we’re going to have to find out what they’re made of in the playoffs again obviously that’s going to be the biggest question mark but I don’t think there’s any question in my mind that this team is going to be much better in the regular season all right so on that point last year uh these were the topic topics of conversation coaching Frank vogle what is he doing what substitutions patterns rotations in-game decisions right okay you bring in bud I’m going to be very humble here I’m going to keep it as low as I can two wins coaching gives me two more wins you can you can you get behind that yeah coaching gives me two more wins okay are we 51 are we turnovers we were we were one of the worst teams in the league at turnovers right okay you bring in a guy that is probably the best guy in the NBA assist the turnover ratio coming off your bench now controlling the ball right plus familiarity with each plus familiarity with two guys you just brought in does that clean up two games I think so defense defense right did you get better defensively you potentially got the best defensive player in the draft this year point of attack and brought back your best defender uh at the guard position in Josh aogi so and you have Royce O’Neal for a full season as well got Roy for a full season so does that add a couple wins now we’re at six I mean these are simple or this is very this is being very modest and and that’s at least 55 like I said and that’s at least 55 and I think coach Bud we didn’t the last thing I want to pounce on is how many how many postgame shows did we sit here and say or pregame Sun shoot 43s they win then you do the post 33s no we were saying 40 40 I thought it was 30 no it was 40 yeah it was 35 to 40 their record was like I think they did that like what five times all year but they were like they were like they I think they did it seven times and they were like six and one when they did it but either way like you want to take 43s even 30 was I mean how many post game shows will we sent here and we’re like 21 yeah 22 below 30 was crazy always below 30 well we got a coach now that believes in shooting the the three ball so he’s going to emphasize it right you got Monty Morris who shoots 40% you could brought back Damen Lee who led the league in three-point shooting the year before you got Grayson Allen who had a fantastic three-point shooting year you got Royce O’Neal who’s going to shoot the ball of course the big three is going to shoot the ball so bo b I think it’s going to be the stretch big that bud love to use so I think that’s another two gam so yeah you I’m looking at and I’m saying I don’t think they’re worse than the 49 I think there’s potential to add another five to seven wins and if you did that you’re best in the conference this year so they’re not as far as people think and I think they did a good job of plugging the hoses that’s again I’m not trying to be the pessimist to your Optimist but that’s also you know not taking into consideration the other teams that have also improved you know what I’m saying like you look at OKC they to their squad in the off season and they got a little bit better you know in around the league but then there’s other teams that that didn’t do so much like right Denver lost kcp which is a huge bow for them you know that’s they’re relying on Julian STW to to try and make up the ground for that or uh Christian Brown so there’s a little bit of a balance there so there’s never you know obviously there’s never automatic you know you know dubs in this in this game cuz you never know what’s going to happen but you got to feel good and more confident about what the Suns did this offseason heading into this season it feels a little bit more grounded it feels a little bit more certain than it did last year we didn’t bring up injuries either if they have a a cleaner bill of health this year too that has a Major Impact as well iy want to give a shout out to Leo Ted Amilia Vincent Eric uh Austin and others in the chat for uh joining us today wanted to also bring up James Johnson’s Super Chat uh he asked with Rody playing his way out we’re assuming that after one Summer League game who are we targeting keep up the amazing work James thank you for the compliment look I I think it’s too early to say that David Rody has lost his roster spot we’ll know a lot more at the end of of summer league on that front and I think if you target anything you’re likely going to be looking at a wing I I’d guess uh but I it’s too early to tell as well because I don’t think the market is completely played out yet there’s still a lot of guys out there uh that that may wind up having to take a minimum if uh if the things don’t settle their way over the next week I will I will say this it’s too early on Ry you got to let this thing play out um and then I don’t think the word targeting is the right word I I I I don’t think they’re targeting anybody I think they’re monitoring and evaluating what the Market’s going to look like here here’s the mystery guy and I was talking to an agent at the arena the other day here’s the mystery guy uh tyus Jones hasn’t found right money’s running out this is a guy who’s an NBA starting point guard but he hasn’t found a home yet and this is the market playing itself out so the Suns might just be patiently sitting back monitoring the market and saying which one of these guys is going to slip through the crack and actually you know uh miscalculate this off season and if that’s the case can we get rid of a a Rody and and and bring that guy in so I don’t even think it’s positional base I think they’re looking at which of these players the best player available uh misses out on his free agency and could potentially come in Teddy Osmond as well there’s a there’s a handful of guys out there that may do that look we’ve already talked about one goofy uh white big man that I used to love here in Phoenix we’re going to talk to another one after this break our friends of better help 1. Just finished watching the game. Book showed his value and impact on offense and defense. He was the leader of the 2nd team with the help of Davis on the boards. Would you rather have Book be the leader of the 2nd team or get a starting role?

  2. There are no all star guards who don't have to have the ball in their hands and run the offense down the stretch. Even Steph, perhaps the most dominant off ball player of all time, ran pick and rolls with Draymond in the last 5 minutes of important games. "Point Book" is the wrong way to think about it. SGA, Ant, Tatum, Giannis, Embiid, and more aren't all high-level playmakers yet they all have the ball in their hands when it matters. Book and the coaching staff need to figure out the most optimal way for him (and KD for that matter) to "run" the offense down the stretch that isn't spamming high or empty corner pick and roll. Its party of why I wish the Suns could get a center that stretches the floor, the 5 out spacing would do both wonders.
