Detroit Pistons Dominate The Houston Rockets 87-73 In Summer League

welcome back to Pistons Talk podcast hope you guys are having a great night your Detroit Pistons just defeated the Houston Rockets 8773 was the final score what just a complete team Victory from the Pistons tonight from start the Finish there was a lot of bright spots we’re going to get into uh break down what we saw out there who the MVP was uh of tonight’s game and just you know overall thoughts before I do that maybe it’s just me but I thought Ron Holland was going to play tonight and as I’m know getting ready to watch the game I think it was like maybe right before tip off here NBA TV saying yeah Ron h’s not gonna play tonight and I was like oh okay is he injured like what’s going on and we don’t hear anything until basically the start of the second quarter NBA TV says he has a thumb injury which I’m like great got another injury and I’m scrolling on Twitter and I see Amari Sova say we just got done talking to a Detroit Pistons team representative NBA TV misspoke Ron Holland doesn’t have a thumb injury he’s good to go he will play tomorrow against the Chicago Bulls the Pistons were just resting him and I’m like okay cool I had a mini heart attack I thought he got injured like right off the bat I was like great he’s already injured but NBA TV misspoke gave me a heart attack for no reason shout out NBA TV but man like I I just wented the event for like 60 seconds there I was like why isn’t he playing like what what the hell’s going on but hey man uh I guess it happens at Summer League um I guess what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas right but let’s get into this team Victory right just this just just amazing team victory from the Detroit Pistons so I wanted to get into the team defense because I thought there were moments where it looked really good like the first quarter you know first four or five minutes was a very low scoring game I think it was like six to six like halfway through um the first quarter bis Jenkins was locking people up Bobby clitman really took the task of guarding cam Whitmore tonight he did a phenomenal job he really did Cam Whitmore shot one of 15 from the field only had five points Bobby clitman was a big reason why cam Whitmore had such a difficult time tonight against the Pistons and a big reason why the Rockets only scored 73 points is because cam Whitmore wasn’t hitting shots um Reed Shepard struggled su he was uh six out of 17 from the field he had 15 points so two of their most high potent players on the summer league roster only scored 20 points on really low efficiency and a you got to tip your cap to Jarrett Jack you got to tip your cap to Bobby clitman Donis Jenkins and the Detroit Pistons summer league roster for really priding themsel on defense tonight the team defense I thought was just it was good it was really good um and that’s something that we saw in glimpses um the first three games of the season last year when Dan Burke was on the roster where the Pistons were playing like really really good defense and then they just stopped but the defense tonight I loved it I I I really did I did want to transition into the ball movement now in in the first half there was a lot of shots that were attempted they weren’t going in but the ball movement throughout the night stayed consistent and that is something that I think a lot of us have been screaming for a lot of us have been asking like man why don’t we move the ball side to side like why are we doing like these 15 second just isolation um possessions they’re so predictable to guard like no one’s going to you know take us seriously because we’re not you know you know moving the ball side to side like watching the ball swing and like when I watch the ball movement tonight it was absolutely beautiful there no one was standing around no one was just stationary no one was standing in the corner really the player movement um just the unselfishness it was just such a beautiful thing to see tonight and again you got to tip your cap to Jarrett Jack for getting these guys right and it it’s so funny because when you talk about summer league basketball like a lot of these players haven’t had that many practices to to uh together with each other and I watched that team tonight I felt like they’ve been together for a whole season like they look great just passing the basketball uh sharing the basketball um that is something that I saw tonight that I was really impressed with I don’t know about you guys but really really liked just the the ball movement um from the Pistons tonight now my MVP it has to be Donis Jenkins Donis Jenkins man like I was really impressed with them in game one I talked yesterday with uh Eric Vincent on the podcast if you guys haven’t checked that out definitely do it should be up on all audio platforms and it should uh be up on YouTube right now but his pace and his Ju Just the way he plays basketball ball the way he plays that guard position he’s just so relaxed out there doesn’t really make a whole lot of mistakes uh he was my MVP tonight um I’m gonna pull up his box score real quick I know he did have 26 points because he had a really really good night shooting the basketball um yeah 26 points three rebounds four assists one steel two blocks shot eight out of the 16 from the field so 50% from the field and he shot six out of 11 from three so he made six threes and he made all of his free throws and only had three turnovers um in 26 minutes he’s my MVP um he was a guy that I talked about last night that I was like keep an eye on him there there’s something there he’s a very smart basketball player I just like his Poise I I like the way he plays basketball and this might be an overreaction because it is July 15th as I’m recording this I think the Pistons May have found dare I say a backup point guard maybe a third string point guard he looks damn good you guys he looks really good when his shot is falling you can tell when he’s confident because he’s just he he’s just you know moving that ball he’s pretty fast too like I I really like this two-way that the Pistons uh did give him because I I honestly think Tran may have found a gem in him he’s just such a good basketball player and I’ve been really impressed with him um in these two Summer League games so far that the Pistons have played but MVP for me now before we do get into the second Donis Jenkins who had 18 um at at halftime really scoring the basketball it was just I could go on for like 30 minutes just about him because he’s he’s played so well right but the second half we got to talk about Bobby clitman Bobby clitman holy crap in the third quarter you guys he did miss it I think he maybe missed one three like he was hitting his Threes And when they tried to run him off the three-point line he’s doing like back th Cuts I’m like this kids a second round pick I see why the Pistons gave him a standard contract he’s he’s got to be in the rotation and it might be an overreaction because it’s only two Summer League games but the two games that I’ve seen out of him when the Pistons were down versus the Rockets Bobby clitman just like okay I’m going to take over I’m going to get us back in this game and he did I think he had like 13 points like 13 straight points for the Pistons had a bunch of Threes gets to the free throw line back door Cuts all that stuff like so many good things from him offensively tonight and I talked about earlier about his defense on cam Whitmore um he’s just a two-way forward they can knock down shots playmake defend like such good value for the Detroit Pistons getting him in the second round with the 37th overall pick and trading up to get him by the way so obviously the Pistons did their homework on him and he he’s just to me I I I think he’s kind of like the star of the Detroit Pistons summer league team so far he’s the guy that I think my stock in him is very high would not surprise me if we see him in a maybe 10-man rotation under JB bicker if he keeps playing like this JB’s gonna have to play him he really he really is like Bobby clitman is is just an absolute stud um something I did also want to get into is just like the energy out of the second half like the Pistons brought way more energy out of halftime um not to say that in the first half they didn’t bring the energy it just seemed like defensively they were like really stepping it up they were locking people down um there there was a point where Houston just could not score it was like a 15 or 16 old run like the Pistons were just locking these guys down um and they they took the challenge of guarding re Shepard and cam Whitmore and the whole Houston Rocket summer league team but the the defense was just locked down and I I think as a piston fan you you you you see that you you see um a team just can’t score the basketball like Houston tonight and and the Pistons were taking pride in their defense I think that’s what JB bicker staff was try trying to say like by February or March you will see that Detroit Pistons basketball that a lot of the fan base loves and I know it’s a summer league game but I kind of see the identity that this new Detroit Pistons coaching staff is going for um they’re they’re going for that team basketball they’re going for being a really good defensive team and from game one to game two I saw vast improvements tonight I was really impressed just with everyone collectively on the summer league roster playing Team defense and playing individual defense grabbing rebounds um and even like the turnovers the Pistons had because they did have quite a a few tonight uh they were never really out of the game because they were playing solid defense throughout a 40-minute quarter or 40 minute quarters 40 minutes tonight in 10-minute quarters like I was really impressed just with uh the commitment to playing defense the ability of them just not giving up on a play they didn’t they didn’t like you know pout because they weren’t winning the game they were always in the game and they they they just turned it on and I absolutely love to see it something really didn’t get to see too much last season um there were stretches where they they played good basketball but I I didn’t really see stretches like I saw tonight uh of them just being locked in out the defensive end of the floor and that’s something that I think a lot of you guys were if you do go back and watch the game you’ll see what I’m talking about just the the commitment level the effort diving on the floor for loose balls all that good stuff that we all love uh from our Detroit Pistons now I I I think the last thing I’ll I’ll end this podcast with right and it was NBA TV obviously was getting into the rockets and as they should you know cam Whitmore is a bucket we all know that Reed Shepard has had really good Summer League game so far but holding both of those guys to under 20 points and I mentioned earlier cam Whitmore shot one out of 15 from the field that’s that’s not good if you’re a Rockets fan Reed Shepard at 15 points on six out of 17 shooting from the field knowing The Scouting Report and knowing your opponent and it’s just summer league right that was really impressive to me because these are two guys that you turn on ESPN right now you go on social media you just see all these highlights of Reed Shepard scoring like you know 20 points and just having complete games and cam Whitmore just you know stuff in the stat sheet and pistons came out tonight knew that these two guys were capable of putting points up on the board knowing that Houston in two Summer League games have been probably one of the most potent summer league teams just offensively and they held them the 73 points I’m not going to do what NBA TV did they were trying to give Houston a pass because they played three games in four nights which I get you know that that’s a lot of basketball games but you got to tip your cap to the Pistons for playing just really good basketball but I know you guys are going to leave some comments of what you guys thought of the game my MVP Don Jenkins so impressed with him um hope he does get a a real look at possibly maybe a third string point guard maybe a backup point guard who knows had a really good game Bobby clitman again so impressed with the kid uh he’s gonna be a stud
