Takeaways from our long week in Las Vegas with the Sixers | PHLY Sixers Podcast

[Applause] [Music] well if it’s our final day we might as well be outside at the pool shouldn’t we because uh we’ve been here for 8 Days ninth day will be tomorrow so our travel day but hey we get an opportunity to spend it outside with you as we broadcast live from Circa Las Vegas our host of course here during the week as we’ve been hanging out for Sixers summer league and we’ve had a chance and opportunity to play stay at this beautiful beautiful uh Hotel and Casino and Resort and as we do that we have a chance to be outside today while Team USA is going on right now Joel embiid and Company taking on team Australia right now as they gear up for the Olympics and uh we are having a good time right here starting things off with d and the venue is great but the being here being in this city in the heat for this long is uh it’s a real endurance test we’ll put it that way it it really is I’m Devon given and Emma is with us again this morning as we broadcast from this beautiful location here at Stadium swim uh cursy of course of Circa Resort and Casino it’s been a blast to be out here with with the guys it’s been a blast to be with all of you and just bringing you what we could from Team USA with Joel embiid bringing you what we’ve seen when the summer sixes arrived here on what Thursday Friday uh we were able to check in with them so it’s been fun and they do have a game tonight so we’ll be able to talk about that tomorrow when we uh when uh we well we’ll be able to talk about it on Wednesday do that with Rich Hoffman tomorrow while we’re on the plane coming back home uh but it’s been a fantastic time so we appreciate everybody even adjusting your schedules well we normally start at 2:30 eastern time we’ve been starting at tune in twice on a weekend or a weekend afternoon I know but when things like that happen you know they they they expected from us so we we bring it to them and uh we have a lot to get into from just kind of chronicling what we’ve been through this time that we’ve been here in the eight days you make it sound like we were sent on a expedition to Mars or something hanging out in Los I’m fighting for my life man it has been a long week it has been a long week it has been a long week man so we’ll talk we’ll talk about it all from the takeaways to Summer League action Joel embiid out here and the team right now playing Team Australia trying to close this one out Kyle it was it was an 18-point lead at one point then we sat down get ready for the show and all of a sudden it’s down to six what’s going on here well listen we were doing some show prep so we haven’t seen all of it oh that was four I did yeah it’s down to four points with eight seconds left I did see that somehow Joel embiid was the only starter with a positive plus minus which is you know one of the funniest possible outcomes it seems that Sixers fans who have been able to watch more of the second half of this game have been you know I guess okay with what you else doing not excited but feeling better than the last game and every Celtics fan of which there are many watching these games because half their team is on the roster are blaming Joel embiid for all their problems so it’s been a fun you know we don’t get to escape the Joel embid discourse even in the middle of July even out in Las Vegas having a good time in summer league it’s just uh comes with the territory yeah yeah and I mean right away you even see some in the chat here with Jacob rude is saying is Kyle ready to admit Anthony Davis’s clear of Joel embiid absolutely not Jacob no I love Jacob that’s my guy however no not in this lifetime not ever maybe maybe the Lakers other Star Mr Mr LeBron James should start playing a little better how about that Jacob yeah yeah and then we got a boots in there standing up for Joel and uh what get out of here with that stuff and and kerr sucks as the coach Jean says does kerr know how to use Joel embiid Derek as it seems like it’s a difficult task there for him and look he’s he’s going to have some work cutout for him coming in here the way that he typically plays someone talking about this pace is too fast for him he’s too slow and slowing down the the uh International game but he is going to have to figure out how to play with them but he other than a few a couple possessions I thought he was pretty good this morning I know you were out chance talk about it but it’s just more of the overall conversation of it yeah know I was at uh I was at shoot around this morning so I haven’t seen any of the game yet but we talked a couple days ago after a couple days ago a week ago a while ago dur during the first leg of our brutal uh you know Las Vegas trip M we spoke that he probably has as big of an adjustment as almost anyone else on this team in terms of his style of play in terms of integrating what he does in terms of you know just trying to learn how to play off of all of the other stars and perimeter creators on his team so yeah I think it there is probably going to be a little bit of a feeling up period in terms of learning how to play with Jo be learning with C how to use him best and that is why you have five tuneup games here before they really start counting it looks like he’s playing better looks like certainly a team has been playing better with him on the floor like I said I haven’t really had a chance to watch Mo most of it yeah I certainly think it’s fair to say that he is going to have a you know they’re going to have to figure out how to use him in his very very unique skill sets yes absolutely and again uh what is it 98 92 right now game’s over they just won okay game’s over and uh Australia battle back Steve curs trying to Tinker with the with the lineups and see what works what doesn’t work but this one was a little closer at after being a big time blowout a little bit earlier and they did all that without the young socialite Hey listen you talking about the videographer or the other guy no the other guy because both of them got left off which I I don’t want to take any Victory Laps on that one but maybe I’ll take a Victory lap on that one yeah um Mr oh my God I can’t believe they traded him and then it’s you know decent obscurity in Portland and not making te mush anyway yeah this is not the matis stable Sixers podcast no it is no it is not but uh uh but look uh they got the win they got it done and they can just build off and look at the film and see they have a quick turn you said they had what games back-to-back days uh I know they have another game at least this week I believe they play I want to say it’s Wednesday and maybe Thursday something like that but I would say this I think it’s still clear that Joel and bid whenever he’s on the floor demands a lot of attention saw a lot of occasional triple teams in the the parts of the game that I watched this morning and while his reads need to be a little crisper a little faster I think generally is trying to use that play that inside out draw the attention fire around the perimeter they have so many shooters on this team right and so that I think is the idea that Steve Kerr has coming in is to use Joel as the Hub in the middle of the floor guy who can playmake for other people and and then obviously big body rebounder rim protector at the other end I I think the defensive stuff I would have a little more issue with with him because there have been some problems in space I still think he’s clearly clearly working into best shape game sharpness all that on that end of the floor where I I don’t think he’s moving as well as he needs to but by and large like it’s he looks fine he was much better I thought than he was in that first game it’s a very typical drw and be return right where first game back long layoff wow he stinks not very good who cares move on he’s better in the second game he’ll be better in the third game and on and on and on we go and that’s I’ve seen this movie before so I’m not too worried about Joel and his ability to play winning basketball speaking of the defense you can just see with the drop coverage that they’re playing that that is something of course that he in this International game has to adjust to a little bit because the spacing is just so much and guys like Jack landelle can come in and and drop 17 where that may not be the case in the NBA uh but because of how how things play but to your point overall outside of a few opportunities where I thought he missed a couple of passes where he did his normal dwel and beat in the Sixers uniform stuff where he backs guys down the double team comes feels like he can shoot over him the the international officials are not going to give him that call and and uh yeah so it’s it’s something that he again just now that he has another game in his belt under his belt he’s going to look at that and he’s going to see that and that’s something that he can adjust to but he made passes early that that did work but you it was something that we talked about going into this this International play he’s going to have to just like all of them when you don’t get the touches that you want and you’re used to going up and down the floor five times soon as the ball swings to you want to do something you have to feel like you’re you’re a part of the game when may not call for that right then and that’s just the one little thing but that was just little it was minor because it wasn’t a big deal because guess what as Kyle said he was the he was the only plus starter out there at that time and they were building this double digit lead now adding to that the guy said that they going to have to learn how to play with him that’s Anthony Edwards and man did he come out and he was on fire early on look they all made their shots early where it was LeBron hitting a couple of Threes Anthony Edwards the same thing Jason Tatum got the start also with Anthony Edwards in this version of the starting lineup but Anthony Edwards man he was he was really really good early on to help build that lead not only with the shooting but with his slashing with the ball and then his passing as well yeah I mean I I would put less emphasis on the passing because it seems clear that Ant-Man thinks it’s it’s his time to go out and score right now and look I certainly he’s been one of their better players after going on that long playoff run with the Timberwolves I do think you could see some why maybe Steve Kerr wanted to bring him off the bench to to start and that’s why they did that in that first scrimmage against Canada because that allowed him to be in that Super Sub like okay he’s just attack mode from the second that he starts the game and I think it’s a little tougher to justify when you’re playing with Steph LeBron Jason Tatum Joel embiid right like that’s it’s a little tough to just be like yeah I should get every shot and Joel is dealing with some of that that same mental math in his own head right it’s that same battle where you’re the guy on your team back home and you have a a rigid is style we’ll say with Joel embiid and having to figure out here’s how I get my stuff but also how do I leverage that for other people so Anthony Edwards dealing with that right now it’s not just Joel he just he is a magnet for all types of of criticism and discussion and I think my advice to Sixers fans would be like maybe you just take a step back and ignore a lot of that stuff famously Philadelphia fans are great at that yeah well the no I always say the no one likes us we don’t care thing is maybe the biggest lie told in sports history and that’s fine like it’s okay to be prideful about Philadelphia and the people who it’s the same thing as the people who get mad at like people making jokes about oh you threw snowballs at Santa it’s like well who gives a I don’t care what a bunch of people from New York or LA or Chicago or Miami or wherever Phoenix Denver any of these cities say about Philly fans I don’t really care what they say about you and be that’s it’s all in that same boat only problem with the Santa stuff is it’s lazy since it was 80 years ago but that’s why it’s easy to ignore it’s like you know okay great we’ve heard it a thousand times to me it just has no teeth anymore yeah so uh they pick up the W Joan B did play well miss a free throw or two just in there a couple of things like that but uh he was good today and it was good to see him out there as we uh as we hang out here by the pool and we have all the guys here hanging out as well during their shows from the other cities yes good bonding experience with them we’ll tell everybody of how how our trip went we wanted to kind of as we’ve been bringing everything we we we could to you all we wanted to also tell you what we’ve been able to do with everybody else and just hanging out with them uh getting a chance to really hang out with them instead of just seeing them on the screen and in meetings and and channels and Google meet no it’s a lot better to be out here with everybody to uh maybe spend a little too much Cino floor or or bar time with everyone but uh and just too late in general even if we were sitting in a I don’t know sensory deprivation tank instead of a casino in Las Vegas but yeah it’s good for bonding good for camarad all that I wish we could have gotten everybody to the sphere after the three of us did it considering how much effort it took just to get three tickets next to each other I’m not sure that would worked out yeah I mean unless everyone wanted to pay like $600 a ticket for general admission floor and I think I was out on that yeah so and look right now though sitting out here while it’s fun these leather seats are a little hot just going to be honest as you know you know what they call it swamp you know we so if you see me adjusting it’s because I’m not trying to get you know I’m not trying to let that happen here while we sitting outside is that the first of swampass on this show um it’s got to be right where else would we bring that up yeah I don’t think so I don’t think maybe on the road when we were at one of the other spots that we’ve been inside and they had their chairs and all that so maybe maybe a cushion you know you’re not wrong Devon I’m just not sure I would have you know said that on the air but these are our folks our buddies absolutely these are our folks so we we just have to be honest with them so look when we we also want to tell you about uh derck was at shoot around earlier today uh so we this morning so we want to get that I talk about what we saw at practice cave Aluma Kyle talked to him you can read his piece on all phly.com if you’re a DieHard member you can take advantage of that if you are not and you’re like man I want to read that you’re going to have to go and sign up and better become one then and you should and uh Jean says get some uh talk some talcum powder there Devon and yeah well it’s a little late to do that do that now je next year we’re ready thank you Captain hindsight appreciate that absolutely so what we’ll do uh when we come back is we’ll definitely were though at uh shoot around early this morning uh what were you able to see as they get ready for the Portland Trailblazers tonight 1 and0 after defeating the Pistons and the Portland Trailblazers with uh the young big man that they have to go up against tonight from Connecticut yeah you didn’t really see much there that’s second we show up at segment well this is why we don’t send you anywhere and I’m the guy on the ground cuz I can at least pretend like things happen I’m just being honest to our audience uh no we I mean we see like the shooting drills at the end and it didn’t even get a chance to talk to the coach you really just pull people aside for one-on ones I was talking a little bit to Jared McCain just trying to get a little more on what he’s trying to do with his shot we saw him going through some some drills yesterday at practice get a little maybe Clarity on what he’s working on um so I was mostly focused on trying to get like I said a little bit of time with Jared McCain I will have a piece on him coming out tomorrow once again all phly.com if you are a Die Hard you can get that there um so it was really just there for the interview uh and you know he was talking about you know shooting through his slump how he sort of had something similar going on at Duke last year he shot I think 26% from three over the first seven games found his way shot 40% from three of the rest of the way uh and obviously from high school to college there’s a jump now from college to even the summer league there is a jump uh and whether that’s a jump in just the distance of the line jump in the quality competition and the speed of the game so he’s you know I think adjusting to that a little bit but expressing confidence he was going through some uh you know sort of sprinting to the corner basically just trying to maintain his upper body motion when his feet isn’t perfectly set so he was working on maybe trying to find ways to get you know quick shots off yesterday so I was talking to him a little bit about that but like I said for the most part we saw some shooting girls had a chance to talk to Jared a little bit one-on-one uh he does push-ups whenever he airballs a shot which it brought me right back to Major League I don’t know how he’s supposed to shoot if he can’t lift his arms but that’s something they currently have have him doing uh so I talked to him a little bit about that is that a them thing or is that a him thing that he’s carried over from his no it’s them that’s a them thing and I ask him whether or not they’re going to keep that going through the uh you know past summer league and he said there’s a chance so again I’m not sure I see the logic behind it you can’t I see the logic behind it they’re doing conditioning in the offseason no I get that I get that but if it can anyway it doesn’t matter really I just want to bring it back to Major League and you ruined it Kyle thank you I appreciate that well you would have had to tell a good story in the first place look look I am done I’m done I I get that I get that I have very little left but that was the update as it relates to McCain we’re waiting on he’s only played one game so one bad game away still waiting on the first good Vegas game I’m expecting it’ll come tomorrow as soon as we leave because it would have been nice to be here and be like oh wow really excited about what he showed or he just had the stretch of this game where he made five threes and got on a heater and and I would say I haven’t changed my opinion on him basically at all since he was drafted and you can take that for what it is right like I I do think we all agree that believe in the shooting long term even though it has not been there now that as Derek alluded to went through that adjustment period in college and after a slow start obviously got to where everyone expected him to be as a shooter I think that’ll happen here as well I’m still concerned about the other stuff how he fits into this rotation as a a 62 guard playing next to Tyrese Maxi who’s basically the same size Kyle Lowry going to be running back up Point presumably y not giving you a lot of size there there are just not going to be a lot of opportunities unless he can be a true lead point guard like leading the units that Tyrese Maxi is off the floor for and as of yet I haven’t seen that cuz we haven’t seen the ability to consistently get to end or finish at The Rim when he’s able to create some separation for himself I do think he’s had some some nice passes some nice reads stuff in traffic little drop offs to their bigs Bona Luma Etc and and getting the ball to the right places on the perimeter but his inability to get real separation other than in transition or early offense semi transition type of plays that’s concerning for me and it’s part of why I struggled with him being the pick not to say that it was a bad one just that I’m I’m skeptical that he can have value on this team specifically and so it really does come down to the shot until that comes around it’s a whole lot of like we’re waiting on it this is where that comp came in when we talked about who he could be and having someone like Kyle Lowry back in the building now with him as as presumably presumably as a mentor uh for him as he learns the game KY Lowry came in as a smaller guard now his ability because of how strong he was as much as a bulldog as he was he did you know he wasn’t always the fastest he but he was quick you know with how he did things he was faster than McCain was yes he was yes he was but learning he’s going to have to learn those angles to to be able to do those things that you’re talking about to get that shot off even in the game on Saturday there were a few opportunities that I thought not from the perimeter but when he was able to prove get the guy on his hip get to the middle of the paint and have that little floater or the runner even just a short jumper and he missed it he has to make sure that he takes advantage of those opportunities because those are going to be his sweet spots when he gets there because if he’s not going to be challenging those big guys in there at The Rim while we saw some creativity with that in Utah at the Salt Lake City summer league he’s going to have to make sure he makes those shots and they they’ll fall I’m not really worried about those Runners and tear drops that he has there uh at that spot but those are the things that he’s going to have to do and and I would again looking at someone like Kyle Lowry who is very crafty with for a guy who as you say you can go back to back with and talk about the height difference the same thing with jerem mcain for you because he is a smaller guard so to see to I I I cannot wait to see what he is around Kyle Lowry for a an extended period of time but even when it comes to the shooting and US seeing him go through his workouts and all and seeing Rico hin and TJ Deo Reggie reading and all those guys run him through those drills those shooting drills intense man they are a lot and when you talk about the push-ups sometimes you can see it on the shot where you’re like oh that one’s short because he’s already a little fatigued right and and they have him running bang get to this spot take it back a little bit deeper behind a three-point line so you’re not allowing yourself to uh have the defender close out quicker because you’re right at the three-point line instead of maybe two feet behind it so he has the shooting range he just have to believe he has to believe in himself on this level that he can knock those down because a lot of them seemed like they were at the line in college not very not extended too far back and if it was extended it was the NBA range now you have to go beyond the NBA range and extend it a little bit more going out to 30 feet exactly and he’s shorter so they the close out might be a little bit different with these guys so I I I do believe in the shooting but that’s what this training is for and that’s what this summer league is for for him to get past that I would say just to build off something Kyle said not only do I still believe in shooting I probably believe more in the shooting now than I even did coming into uh summer league and coming out of the draft which sounds absurd because he hasn’t really made any shots yet but just seeing the way he works seeing how meticulous he is with his pre-shot footwork uh seeing the way he’s he’s working to extend his range and seeing the way he’s working to move off ball just quite frankly just seeing how hard he’s working at it and already having that strong base he is going to make shots in the NBA I’m quite confident of that even some like we can talk about the speed and the height and the size of the Defenders and the speed of the game a lot of the shots that he’s missing right now are pretty open and maybe he’s rushing because he will get more open shots when he’s playing with Joel embiid Tyrese Maxi Paul George all those type of guys right and not only is like maybe he’s rushing a little bit and because he’s rushing that’s open but still I think he will get to the point where he can get that shot off very quickly I have almost no doubt about his shot it’s you know he struggled at The Rim it he struggled defensively like we’ve seen him you know try to dig down on bigs and recover back and he struggled a little bit to recover back because he just doesn’t change speed all that quickly and doesn’t have a Long Reach and whatnot to contend a shot those are my concerns those were the concerns sort of coming in those are the ones that are still there the shot I have very little concern of and like I said I probably believe in it even more just having watch them up close the the mid-range stuff you’re talking about like getting to a spot having those opportunities missing them the only thing I I’ll bring up as it relates to shooting that you would have a little concern with is just that as we’ve talked about with Ricky Council the difference between this environment and the one that Jared McCain will be in once he’s playing with the big boys is you don’t get to play yourself through struggles like this is not you’re not a kid who’s going to come in and if you miss your first six shots you’re going to get a lot more time and touches you will be benched in favor of a more NBA ready guy like one of the veterans that are on the team they’re they’re not going to use those minutes on you and so you it’s a different version of a problem that Tobias Harris or other guys that have been a third guy on dwell embid teams have run into where if you can’t work yourself into a rhythm on these like sporadic opportunities throughout the game you’re going to end up in some of these games being like 0 for two 0 for three and not having an impact on the game and so I think that will probably be the biggest challenge for him but that’s not about uh Jared McCain necessarily that’s the challenge of any young guy coming to a team that has real expectations and a hierarchy established that he now has to break into somehow and I mean saw that play out with one of legitimately one of the best Shooters in the world in Isaiah Joe he was here his percentages weren’t good his playing time was inconsistent in part because of that if he had made a couple more threes would had got more play playing time would that have then extended to more success possibly uh but he didn’t have a chance to play through that we blame Doc Rivers a lot for that but that is sort of the reality of a young uh you know shooting specialist coming in the league and we saw it with frankly we saw it with maxi who’s a different sort of player right but his rookie year under doc he had a week or a week and a half two weeks at a time where he’s he’s bringing instant offense Off the Bench and we all saw it and we’re like this kid needs to play more but when he would struggle it’s like right back to shake Milton right back to furkon corkas right back to these guys that are more every coach does it I know doc has been a lightning rod for criticism on that area specifically and I do think he is specifically bad at at letting young guys play through that stuff but it happens with every coach and so that that’s something that will require some real mental matur from McCain which I think he has based on just talking to him talking to people around him Etc we’ll see but I I think to your point D he from what we can see and what we hear he’s doing everything possible to put himself in the best position and I think the point about the mechanics and feeling better seeing the consistency is a good one because even as he’s doing these workouts right where really the point of them is to play him through exhaustion and to say you have no legs your arms are heavy you’re tired I want to see you maintain those same mechanics and i’ say 95% of those shots still look the same as they did at the start of the workout that is a great great sign for once the once you turn the faucet on it’s going to keep going and to your point you brought up his maturity and you know I I covered through for a long time been around the sport for a long time I’ve seen a lot of kids come through the league he is as mature of a 20y old as I’ve seen possibly ever so I think that’s going to bode well for him yeah it absolutely will and another guy we talked a lot about yesterday people had uh some uh interesting thoughts on Kev Aluma and we’ll talk about him when we get back once again because Kyle wrot a piece allphi.com just to tease it a little bit again you make sure you go sign up allphi.com to become a member so you can read that piece but just a little bit of a tease about what Kyle was able to get some information about Kev Aluma we we had our questions about that you were right Kev Aluma K we we got confirmation from the man himself is how you pronouncing so uh we’ll talk about him as we broadcast live again from Circa Resort and Casino outside at the stadium swim you can see uh the big screen behind us uh it’s a fantastic spot the pool and all and we have the pool directly behind us because we’re in this what Cabana area so this is this pool a nice setup there’s like a big couch there’s a fan there’s a whole desk set up it looks like over here so you can post up and folks the pool this is our pool for right for all of us uh for for right now so if you were able to be here I’ve had people ask about it like all right how how good is it really it’s really good it’s nice it’s really good so uh you have these types of advantages as well and opportunities to uh secure secure a cabana and have it for you and your folks uh but this is what where we are today and it’s h pretty cool uh to be out here hanging out so when we come back we’ll talk about Kev Aluma and and some more sights and sounds of Las Vegas on our final day as it’s the end of the road for the phl6 podcast out here in Las Vegas it is indeed but really want to drive home what Theon has been saying and thank our so it saves some time on checking IDs as people are coming in off of Fremont all kinds of people wearing costumes wise the clown women in various states of undress it’s just a it’s a chaotic time out here but it’s awesome at Circa 7,000 foot casino with two levels and it has the world’s largest sports book three-story Stadium style I mean you guys can see this is the pool and we have a gigantic screen out here so imagine being inside how big the TV and how big the setup is at the indoor sports book so Stadium swim is the draw it’s what you see today 4,000 person capacity here they can pack them in Devon was here I think for like five hours yesterday it was packed just hanging out for the big soccer game that was going on well there were two of them there was the European championship and then there was the there’s cop of America so big soccer day 15,000 square feet of wet space out here that’s a lot of wet space again I’m a little uncomfortable with that phrase but because of the seats I’m just read I was proud that the botom I didn’t make a joke there but guys Circa is awesome we’ve had such a good time want a bit of money playing crap so that helps it feel even that just that much better der cries about his black I say I didn’t lose any money here at Circa so Circa is still good by me there you go so I highly recommend coming out here the next time you’re thinking about whether it’s you’re out here with your your partner as a couple or you’re coming as a big group you want to get a block of rooms highly recommend it we’ve been having an excellent time here it’s been one of the saving Graces of the eight days in Vegas if we were in a worst place I don’t know if I would have made it we also want to thank our friends from Kors light beautiful people out in Golden Colorado have you had a few of those while we were here did you choose chill I have chosen chill and had over and over and over chose chill last night our La probably our last night on the casino floor because tonight it be a packing and going home sort of deal but guys there is always a better way a chiller way when you’re in Vegas for eight days when you’re having regrets about agreeing to come out in 115 degree heat for this long to cover some basketball Kors light is always there and you know it’ll be ice cold because the mountains Turn Blue on the bottles and cans as they hit that perfect temperature I have needed to decompress at times this week Las Vegas is a daunting overwhelming City to be in Coors Light after I step back back I sit down I have a break in the hotel room I always know I can reach for a cold layered cold filtered cold packaged beer with a smooth finish so when you choose to rise above it all choose chill choose coorsite get coorsite delivered straight to with instacart by going to coorslight.com phly basketball celebrate responsibly cor’s Brewing Company Golden Colorado so Derek J the jungle you you you you took up for me uh even though he was making a fun joke Jr Buddy says I look like I’m wearing a train conductor hat or some kind of Huggy Bear thing with the headphones on yes I was talking to Jess a little bit earlier in the chat because the overhead headphones are certainly smashing down the the the whole look of the bucket can I get some Choo Cho in the chat you just did it right there there you go all I was saying if there’s any of the three of us that has just the the the swag to be able to pull that train conductor hat look off it would definitely be you well listen I took it off while Kyle was doing the read Because I had to you know adjust the bucket you to make sure that the bucket was sitting right and uh we just deal with it how how we deal with Rick Morris laugh about the Huggy Bear comment but also uh we had one here talking about some more roster maybe opportunities there win forever Kyle was saying listen y’all I like chimzi metu and Gary Trent Jr we need that on the roster so the Gary Trent stuff is out there right that if he still isn’t signed to a team at this point they are just not really suitors for big money or or the money that he would want and it just rests on would Gary Trent be willing to come to the Sixers on a minimum deal I couldn’t tell you that one way or another it does seem that the reporting out there is that he will take a below Market deal so the next question that emerges is what does he really think of his time with Nick nurse yep because he was one of the guys that nurse I think was very open about challenging publicly yes if he felt that he was not bringing the requisite effort defensively or doing something that was off script from what they were supposed to be doing from what I can tell I don’t think it’s like a disaster relationship I don’t think it’s for example in the category of Pascal sakam where they were just simply not going to trade for shakum because of how those two felt about each other at the end of their time together in Toronto I don’t think from what I know it’s the same with Trent but if he’s taking a below Market deal he can take one in a number of places right on a minimum deal there are plenty of teams with interest in Gary Trent Jr so it’s a matter of whether you can promise him a big enough role and a a path to being like a version of what Kelly was for these guys last year which is someone who came in had to take less money than maybe they thought they were getting or expecting in free agency and turning that parlaying that into another deal a better deal next season yeah and look I’ve had some reservations about Trent in the past in large part with what Nick nurse has mentioned publicly uh it seems like his effort defensively is not always there his focus is not his impact defensively is not what it should be but on a minimum it’s a no-brainer but like Kyle said it’s not just you know doke I mean obviously six can offer minimum other teams can offer more we’ll see whether or not they do but what’s his relationship like with Nick nurse but also like does he view this as the best spot to get the most touches to get the next contract um certainly the Sixers have minutes available yeah although that’s you know dried up a little bit but they still certainly have spots in rotation where you can get significant minutes but is he going to get the touches he wants in the floor spots he wants you know coming off of the actions that he wants and like Kyle said none of us have you know deep Insight on what he’s thinking right now that’s really only something he and his agent can answer uh but I’m surprised he’s been out here this long I I mean look he might want more than people obviously he probably wants more than people willing to offer yeah so uh with him it is a very interesting thing because look when he was a second round pick and he went to Portland and he played well and he was able to move on to Toronto play even better where it looked like he had established himself as a a guy you can count on a shooter in this league and for whatever reason in Toronto I don’t know if it’s a Nick nurse thing or just a Raptor’s style of play that really just did not pan out for him that he is in this spot right now because he’s such a good shooter never heard anything attitude wise you know personality wise where it would really cause him to to still be out there and available right now on the free agent Market this late uh where he’s probably the biggest name in terms of Demar D rozan now that’s done probably Gary Trent Jr really when you look at and I probably yeah probably have to look at some more names but he’s a big name that’s still out there that is now in that potentially in that Kelly UB place from last year where he’s going to have to take maybe uh what what they’re throwing out there and just go out there and try to prove prove himself again because the guy shoots the ball really really well and there’s a contender somewhere that could use that shooting maybe it is the Sixers maybe someone else always always always find room for a shooter I mean the only bigger name I can think of out there or any of the ano Brothers on sign because that’s that’s a lot of characters well the nasis is dealing with the Achilles um is he a free agent though oh I don’t actually want any I was making a joke about the L I wanted to keep going going with the joke I’m not laughing at the Achilles injury but he is still out there yeah so uh he he’s out there yeah but um I’ll run through the list of these are probably the most notable free agents as it stands Gordon Hayward washed Evan fornier cooked Gary Trent Jr Markel fultz Burtons tus Jones Luke Canard I mean these are all people that we’ve talked about on this show at various points Landry shamut Robert Covington I would probably go Canard over Gary trun though like I have concerns with the injuries but I would probably I I think they’re very similar what they I splitting hairs at that point yeah so I don’t know that the height really even matters because I yeah I I think both of them are are pretty crappy defensively so it’s it doesn’t really matter so and like ber he’s another he’s a high volume shooter talk talk about height not mattering he’s the poster child for it he might be the single worst rebounder relative to height of anybody in the league which it would be funny if they if there are people who don’t really pay attention to the league and are more just like only care about the Sixers if they saw oh this guy is 68 or 69 or whatever Bon is they got a forward and it’s like uh yeah I guess so yeah not a lot of good options out there no not not at this point but if someone did decide uh they could add to the depth Derek right now if you had to look at it just since we were talking about it uh they’re 89 man right now for you what would that be outside of embiid Maxi George and then you throw in UB and Martin uh where else where else are you going with that eight n yeah that’s a good question uh let me just pull up the roster so I don’t forget anyone so Drummond’s also gonna be in there he’s the he’s he’s the easiest six then you say Lowry as a backup ball handler ER Gord seven Gordon is eight yeah and then you go on from there where it’s Ricky and MJ yeah I would I would prefer Ricky of those two I’m not sure if that would be the I would too but I think Nick nurse has shown you prefers to play KJ over him for the time being that proba nine right there that’s a big one to watch in training camp of preseason that that’s maybe the clearest like actual rotation battle that’s Up For Debate right now yep all right um before we get to Kev ADM Bona signed a deal yesterday with 76 is four years8 million $8 million uh so what is that for second round pick 41st overall pick uh when you look at that contract and look at those numbers for him a good deal for him and and again just in a really good opportunity here with the Sixers to continue to learn and grow with not a lot of pressure on him as a second round pick but a solid deal for a second round pick yeah so this is the new second round round pick exception I think last year was the first year that you had it uh it basically gives you a way to sign players without having to use either a midlevel exception or cap space uh it allows you to sign them above the minimum salary uh without having one of those two exceptions so it is it gives it just gives teams more flexibility uh in terms of being able to keep their second round picks even if you’re over the cap even if you’re you know deep into the aprons this is an exception available to you uh you have an option of either 3 years which is two years in a team option or four years which three years in a team option at the end uh uh and it obviously has to be negotiated like some teams or some players will still sign for cap space or for a midlevel to get a little more money or a little more flexibility but this is something I think makes sense for both teams uh you know I don’t think he necessarily Bona is a high enough draft piic where he could have commanded More Than This exception uh but it gives him some security it lets Sixers keep him around long term uh and it lets the Sixers sign him without having to have used cap space earlier in the summer so I think it’s a I think it’s pretty good and it’s a you know pretty good commitment like I think they believe in him and believe that he can be a backup center in this league so it’s uh I think it’s good all around yeah I I think he if you’re going to if your third big was going to be a project type of guy I I like him based on where he’s already at and how correctable I think his flaws are right because I think the major issue for him right now is just the ere eagerness and jumping at every shot blocking attempt foul in too much well that’s something that happens with a lot of bigs who are just a lot of bigs in general but certainly defensive minded bigs coming out of college they just they’re used to having such a dominant physical Advantage a lot of the time that they just think hey I should and will jump at just about everything that will come with time I’m not worried about that the part that will be the difference between him being you know just like an okay third big that he’s clearly going to be behind Joel embiid but also probably behind somebody like a Drummond is what he can do on offense it’s can he can his hands improve I’m not all not super bullish on that because I feel like when guys come into the league with bad hands they tend to leave it with bad hands regardless of how long their career is y but can he can he improve his his catching and that so that manifests as a roller but also in dribble handoffs and things like that the other part of it making free throws he’s actually done a good job of knocking down his free throws we’ve seen him working on free throw line jumpers even the occasional three-point shot at Sixers practices here out in Vegas so clearly is aware that eventually he’s going to need to expand this game Beyond just dunking the ball but with all that being said right now he also plays really damn hard and is already making an impact as a rim protector a rim Runner guy running the floor because of that and so it’s it seems like he’s going to maximize whatever his Talent allows him to do and so for a third big that will only probably play in year one a little bit based on Joel’s Health that’s completely fine for me we’ll see what happens in the long term and the other big man uh so congrats to him to you know being in there and we see him working hard uh Jeremy Kane and and and he are the two last two pretty much off the floor with their workouts uh with the coaching staff so ad Demona in the mix for the for the new contract so he’ll will be around and training camp and preseason and all that we’ll see what he does here in summer league game number two tonight against the Portland Trailblazers he got a work cut out for him tonight against uh big boy the big fella from Yukon and uh so we’ll see what happens but uh the other big man you had a chance to talk to Kev Aluma yes yesterday and you wrote a piece on him as well all ph.com so to kind of get everybody to go read that story what are some of the things that you can share with folks yeah so just you know it was just interesting to sit down with them and hear about what it’s like to go from you grow up in Suburban Maryland you go to school first at wford transferred to Virginia Tech yeah looked like he was on a pretty traditional went undrafted and then he got an ex got an offer for an exhibit 10 from the Grizzlies after being with them in summer league and looked at the writing on the wall and said well I barely played for you guys in summer league I need to kind of look elsewhere and so ending up in first in Japan and then in Korea and unlike some of these guys that oh hey they they went to Europe out of college and they’re going to some pretty major European or overseas metros where it’s a little easier to assimilate as someone who doesn’t speak the language when you’re in Barcelona and Madrid or Munich or London or one of those he was in a fairly small City in Japan he’s like three-hour drive away from Tokyo and so think of like you basically don’t see anyone that you know and love because it’s so hard to to get there he only able to talk to said like four or five people between staffers teammates most of them in that first year were were Japanese were natives of the country and so having to just hyperfocus and lock in on 10 months of basketball like they have a really long schedule over there I went from his I went through his team in Korea that he played in last year and I think he was the only American on that team I have to double check but I think so and I so he actually he has a DE this year already agreed to with the team in Okinawa back in Japan and the so the K I was looking at the Korean roster of the team he left I believe Henry Sims old friend of of the Sixers and Sixers fans is the only guy over there only American on that current Korean team so yeah it’s just it’s weird to think about just being over there and obviously he’s got some stuff to work on he’s kind of a a tweener he only started playing basketball in high school he was a defensive mid midfielder playing soccer oh okay and so rounding out his skill set and finding himself not just as a player but as a person I just thought it was like a really interesting path and I don’t think frankly I talked to some people connected to the Sixers I don’t know that they were really expecting him to play I think the reason Tony Bradley was here was okay he’s a veteran big man option we’re looking at him again seeing where he’s at and Aluma has outplayed him in practice and played well enough in games that Tony Bradley’s only played in one game out of four for the Sixers at summer league so Aluma has done a good job to to make his case I still don’t know he’s got to be able to shoot well and like really well to play forward because you can’t be an inconsistent yep he doesn’t have the the true defensive versatility to be like all right we’re going to play him fulltime four but you can’t play him full-time Center either so the shot being where it’s at has been massive for him and I I talked to a few people that think he’s going to get a real look if it’s not with the Sixers somewhere in the League this year yeah it’s a good story man if he if he’s able to make it and tell that team over there in Japan you said Japan Okinawa Okinawa that uh yeah sorry staying home uh for this one so that would be a cool story make sure you go read Kyle’s story on all phly.com to get more about Kev Aluma and his solid play see if it can continue again tonight against the Portland Trailblazers we do have a super chat from Brian Pumper hey fellas I want us to succeed in the Olympics by us aside Joel needs to come off the bench well all the bigs have been playing well Joel played well today so did Anthony Davis Anthony Davis has been playing better than him which is why people are kind of all over and when you talk about the fast pace of this type of play Anthony Davis runs up and down the floor so it’s easier to scale Anthony Davis down in his game like it yeah yeah absolutely so we hear you Brian uh we’ll see what Steve CER figures out and how Joel continues to play with these guys out there as they get ready for the Olympics and uh we want to get ready because we uh have to get ready to wrap up so we want to want to roll call people because we don’t have an opportunity to really tell everybody everything about the trip in couple of minutes I mean yeah we but I I would say I’d rather just do Wrap Up we do our roll calls when we’re back in Philadelphia I’d say The quick summary of this trip is that we were able to spend a lot if not too much time together on the road dealing with the sights and sounds in Las Vegas obviously wonderful host here at Circa we thank our partners from Rothman helping us to be out here indeed have been big partners for us this week all our all our people that make this show possible and we’ve had a really good time we’re able to go to the sphere we’re able to see some summer league basketball we’re able to see uh Team USA a lot of that is because we have support from people like the people in our chat today everybody back home that comes up comes out shows up to events shows up to shows every day is in the Die Hard program not possible without you guys so we have enjoyed ourselves probably a little too much we’ll be very happy to all be home and well Devon and I’ll be back tomorrow Derek is a complete maniac and decided he was going to extend his stay longer so he can be out in the heat just a little bit longer so what time are you what time are you on tomorrow is it regular 2:30 no it’s 2 o’ 2:00 tomorrow and then on Wednesday K and I have an early start time at 100 p.m. so 1 p.m. on Wednesday so 2:00 for Derrick and rich on Tuesday 1 p.m. for Kyle and I on Wednesday while we’ll be back at home in the studio so no roll call we’ll roll call it when we get back home but you we’re on a tight schedule guys we’re on other people’s time as well throw all the bells in there and everybody we really appreciate it as Saul from phnx is telling us to wrap it up so they can get started I will say this though as K say we spent a lot of time together uh I this was fun for us for me to be able to work with these guys I’ve told you it’s been fun to work with them in general but to spend these eight days with them was good for me uh just knowing these guys as long as I have I haven’t had an opportunity to really really spend time with them so this has been a good thing for us for our show for all of you out there so I appreciate this opportunity to spend time with both of you while we are had to do this I will say this and I think this is something that doesn’t always happen when you come to Vegas I like both of you better now than I did when we came out here and look Kyle and I give each other about the sphere baby I told you I told you Kyle and I have sort of like the same personality where we like to make fun of each other the only thing Kyle did this week that pissed me off is he won money at the tables and I did not and I can’t really blame him for that so it was a good trip it was a great trip and we thank Emma also for stepping in filling in while Bri is back home we got Emma here so everybody shout out Emma there in the chat we thank everybody thank youa thank you to Rothman we really appreciate it make sure if you’re in Vegas you come to Circa because this place is dopee so we want to thank everybody here for uh for this trip thank you Emma thank you to Circa thank you to Rothman indeed everybody for Kyle Derek I’m Devon we will 1. Bro morey did a great job in fre agency but he screwed up with the draft we have gotten Knecht not another 6'2 little ass gaurd who looks more like 6'0 I'm not impressed at all so far

  2. Can Celtics fans just like, I don't know, grow up? You got your championship. You get to hold that over Embiid forever. Do you really need to complain about Embiid? We get it. Enough already for Christ's sake

  3. Knecht most obvious pick. Morey n staff refuse draft well. Nick dont develop young players too. I cant be hard on jared cause kid should stayed in school. Now try force kid make team while downit better player. No comparison maxey vs jared. Jared game is different but no game changer, hope works out. Stop drafting for fit. Draft best player period!!!
