Charlotte Hornets vs New York Knicks | Full Game | 2024 NBA Summer League | July 13, 2024

Arena we get set we welcome you to NBA 2K 25 summer league as we open up with the Knicks and hornets from Thomas and Ma Center every team represented here at Summer League we’re in day two of our 11-day tournament everybody will play five games we’ll find out the four playoff teams after four days and we’ll have the semi-finals a week from tomorrow and the championship game coming up a week from Monday alongside Tim legler iar keser George sadono will be with us just a bit welcome inside we got four games here inside of Thomas mag four the games going on at the Pavilion across the way and day one is in the books we had some good performances yesterday what stood out for you legs top three picks in the draft all had great starts to their Vegas summer league and their professional careers but I don’t think anybody was better than Teran Shannon Jr that was the game we had incredibly impressive butterflies now gone for those teams let’s see what we get here on day two yep getting set for 16 more teams to play their first games obviously the Knicks are coming off a uh tremendous run in the playoffs last year the Charlotte Hornets are a team that are rebuilding and they’re rebuilding around Brandon Miller who was a rookie a year ago as the number two pick in fact he’s the only of the top five picks that’ll play in summer league and we’re going to have him this afternoon and you were going to see one smooth scorer in Brandon Miller I’ve said that his ceiling is a comparison to Paul George down the road but this guy can flat out put the ball in the basket in a variety of ways in the second half of his rookie year in particular when he really got comfortable and started to shoot the three ball a little bit more consistently Brandon Miller maybe the most high-profile player we have here at Vegas summerly because of the rookie year that he had and he’s not the only star as p as uh they will have Tan Salon who was the number six pick as we had number one versus number two both from France yesterday Salam was the number six pick by Charlotte he also from France the Knicks had a whole host of draft picks including pacol daier who will see today for the New York Knicks he was taken later in round one the Knicks had four three in the second round who stood out for you as far as the draft picks for the New York Knicks I love The Pick of Tyler kak I I think you’re going to see a guy that can really do the best impersonation of Jaylen Brunson when he’s not on the floor and he’s left-handed to boot but he’s tough he’s Savvy he shoots it well he’s got great pois not overly athletic but just seems to get to wherever he wants to on the floor I’m really excited to see him in person after being such a fan of his and watching him throughout his collegiate career and Tyler kak will be a part of the starting lineups for our first game coming up here today for the New York nicker boers kak and Dwayne Washington Jr in the back court we told you about hako dier Jacob to and aiel hucky will round out Nick Smith Xavier Simpson and Brandon Miller will get the start with leaky black of North Carolina and Jake Stevens out of Chattanooga played well in the California classic our two teams yesterday legs both were making their true summer league debuts this Charlotte team has already three games under the belt that they played at the California class CL and they won all three of them yeah and that’s important because you get some of those Kinks worked out you get a little bit of a rhythm anyway it’s always hard to be thrown together and make your offense look seamless but at least a three-game head starts important kak passing it across Washington Jr will get the first shot of the day not there and Brandon Miller already with a rebound Miller was participating here in Las Vegas with the select team against uh Team USA getting them ready and so he’s been with the team legs just an opportunity not only to get some practice but get a little run here today cuz it sounds by all accounts this will be the only chance that Hornets fans will get to see Brandon Miller in Summerland yeah no doubt about it and I think look it’s it’s nice for some of these young guys uh some of the second round picks some of the undrafted players guys trying to impress to have a guy of this caliber out there to sort of set the table for you it’s going to easily be able to take the pressure off of you offensively you feel like you got to do too much cuz you know in this situation exactly where the ball is going to be funneled while he’s on the court is going to be Brandon Miller’s show and I think you’re going to see him be unselfish and make plays for other people but also see that Elite level scoring ability on display we got a lot of rookies some seconde players and there’s also players that are you know still looking to make their way in the league one at the free throw line right now Xavier Simpson who was a four-year man at Michigan he’s the oldest player on the Hornets summer league roster and played really well up in the California League led the California League in a assist and he gives Charlotte the early two nothing lead here Ariel horty big number 55 setting the screen on Miller rolls and gets the left-handed shot not there and Miller’s got his second rebound I’ve really been impressed with the film I’ve watched on Hort he’s Lefty that finishes really well with a soft touch anywhere around that paint area which could be important if you think about what they lost in Isaiah hardstein and the first basket for Charlotte will go to Jake Stevens who is 610 as a good stroke from outside and who impressed many with the Hornets with his three games that he played up in the California League interested to get your take on coak because everything you read Shaka smart the head coach at Marquette every way they describe kak basically is how you would describe Tom Fido guy who really likes to grind and he seems like the perfect player yeah he’s a tibs guy there’s no question about that tough strong competitive very very smart I know tibs does not like turnovers very much and Tyler kak is not going to hurt you in that category as well he’s just got a Savvy about his game that is going to be readily apparent every time you watch him Cordy trying to finish there couldn’t ball will stay with the Knicks colect the 34th pick from Rhode Island grew up uh season ticket holders parents were the Boston Celtics and playing with the Rival New York and he’s exactly the kind of player that you want on a summer league team because there’s not a lot of rhythm you’re not running sets that are going to be really run very well so to have somebody that just understands spacing and understands you know how to command players on the court to get them in the proper places it it makes your offense run a little bit better Brandon Miller with the three something that he did more than any other rookie last year three-point shot attempt and it’s 7 nothing or it’s Nick still looking for their first field goal they’ve missed their first six opportunities Nick Smith Jor another second-year guy leaky black as well as a year experience missing and another offensive rebound for the Hornet Smith missing and now the Knicks have a chance to run kak to top and foul and they’ll give him the two points on the goal and an opportunity for a three-point play yeah nice job by the Knicks getting out running there and you see KAC there in the open floor with the delivery but this is what he’s so good at the timing on this delivery is is is perfect and it’s put in a place where it as a big or a wing you could just catch it and get that thing right up to the rim you know he he’s he’s just got a a lower body strength about him that makes it very difficult to get him to speed up or get him off balance he’s always dictating terms and how he wants to play um um much like Jaylen Brunson that’s why I kind of made that comparison I know we’re talking about Jaylen Brunson a guy that’s an MVP candidate a year ago so I’m not trying to go there just talking about stylistically very similar and when you’re also drawing comparisons as Miller was looking for contact there the defender backed up and a travel call against Miller you look at comparisons also guys who might be overlooked too right early second round pick nice job here by dadd a sliding his feet just stays back on the pump fake and Brandon Miller thought hey don’t you know I am I’m out here you’re supposed to bite on that ball fake young guy and get me a couple of free throws and daddy a stayed back kept his balance back and as a result Brandon Miller Lost His balance akom daier out of France just 18 years of age and now toppen losing his footing goes down and fortunate the Knicks will keep it as he passed it out like the one thing you see that’s different now with some of the young players from Europe and all around the world is they’re almost ready in that first year out of the draft I mean we got late first round and second used to be like draft and stash many of them been playing pro balls since they were 15 16 years of age yeah and it’s totally different because the expectations the pressure know who you’re playing against all of those things Elevate how quickly you could become someone that could be a rotational player at the NBA level think I’m impressed about with what we’re going to see today both in this game and in the second game are you’re gonna see bigs out here with great shooting touch yesterday was more I feel like the game we had was about the athletes and the pressure defensively which we were both very impressed by you’re going to see some big guys on the floor today that can flat out shoot the basketball if they get a little bit of space zier will inbound against Miller a Cordy who was the last player taken in the draft I guess he’s Mr Irrelevant right it’s not quite NFL Mr Irrelevant number 58 nice screen set by Huck and able to cash it in was ja a toin you know there was a time when you said if you were drafted late in the second round you were better off not getting drafted because then you could handpick what team you went to as a undrafted free agent based on need and maybe you had a better shot to make a team in this case when you look at the Knicks I mean and losing hartenstein he might have ended up in exactly the right place uh because they had Mitchell Robinson and hardenstein as a two-headed monster in the middle a year ago they’re going to need some size and Hy I’ve been very impressed with what last seen from him hartenstein went to Oklahoma City and that leaves Mitchell Robinson obviously as the healthy starter Jericho Sims if you’re looking at the depth chart right now backing him up one has to figure there’ll be some competition for that backup center spot in New York as leaky black drops home the triple lcky black in his second summer league pretty good three-point shooter out of the University of North Carolina tole probing for Washington and he hits a three great job by Washington Junior uh relocating there but I was watching KCK on that possession and that this is his game is so built for the modern draw and kick NBA game when the floor is so spread because he just has an awareness where everybody is on the floor once he gets into the paint and that ball was a flick the wrist it was on a rope to the opposite Wing right in the shooting cradle for GR Washington Jr well after a slow start the Knicks trying to claw back into this one Huck py not able to finish inside and we’ll have our first timeout called by the Hornets who got off to a quick start Nick’s trying to draw a little closer timeout here in [Music] Vegas his old teammates from Villanova it’s at his introductory press conference guys he mentioned how he wants to get right to work when I spoke to the Knicks today they told me he literally had his gym bag and went and worked out with the guys as soon as he was off the podium at that press conference so he is absolutely ready to work for this New York Knicks team and certainly a lot of love and hype in the New York area for this squad moving forward for this upcoming season yeah George I’m sure he did because it felt like a Villanova alumni game I mean that’s that’s probably you know it was like everybody welcome back to campus so what a what a collection of wing Talent they had got now in New York and how how does a how does a defensive alignment look like with M bridges on one side and Oobi on the other side with the length and the reach and and maybe you’re looking at a starting line of potentially adding obviously Jaylen Brunson to that with a Julius Randle back healthy and a Mitchell Robinson and then You’ got Dante dendo Josh Hart two guys that really made big splashes for that team in their postseason run that was starting for them most likely I would imagine relegated to the bench now but what a deep team and what a great defensive team on the perimeter Now by adding Mel Bridges to parir up with oan andovi for all those things and and then a whole another reason and here’s the uh the Nova Knicks I like what Mike vicaro from the New York Post calls them Nic NOA I like that too pretty cool that’s well done uh all playing together won those championships together with Villanova and now you’re adding one more piece but what I love even more is look he can be the man if you want we saw in Brooklyn you know he averaged north of 20 points per game he didn’t have to do that to begin his career does not need to do that with the Knicks and is happy to just be the defender and fill in all the gaps yeah it’s and it’s something I mentioned yesterday while we were talking to to uh David Griffin um I think value to me is more about impact than it is numbers and production when you’re on a good team and and so the impact should be greater because what you’re playing for is more significant in New York even though your numbers might take a hit and then they’re going to have to most likely when you look at that amount of talent and offensive ability around male Bridges so his numbers might not be quite the same as they were in Brooklyn but his overall impact and being on a team that’s playing for something really meaningful uh is going to elevate his overall status in the league I believe well and legs what’s interesting is as KY alluded to he went from being a big piece of what they were doing in Phoenix to being the man in Brooklyn but his shot efficiency particularly from three didn’t lower very much he was a 38% shooter 39% shooter uh with with Phoenix for the most part and was 37% Plus or so with Brooklyn on much higher volume so offensively you guys have talked about the defensive side but offensively he’s grown Leaps and Bounds as well uh totally agreed and I thought the bottom of the graphic we showed about 5 minutes ago availability he plays literally every single game since he’s been a professional was over 500 in including the postseason he is always available to play and you ask any coach that means almost more than than anything well it seems like more important than it’s ever been in the NBA you know I felt like we had so many key injuries not only in the regular season a year ago but the postseason was dramatically affected by the number of significant injuries we had lock charge call underneath as Dwayne Washington Jr was making the run and Brandon Miller will get tagged with the person like yo I’m a veteran here I should get that call yeah it was a good call right moving a little bit there little bit sliding in a little bit late we’ll talk more about effort though yes we’ll talk more obviously about Jaylen Brunson with uh Adrian wowski coming up a little bit later on in the broadcast as well and his new contract extension as we have a bunch of new summer league Knicks on the floor toppen got the start still in misses the jumper number 32 Ras jacobius is now on the floor folks really looking forward to seeing the Lithuanian who’s really here because Lithuania got knocked out of the Olympic qualifiers last week and hasn’t been a Nick summer leager in a couple of years nice Spin and bucket for Nick Smith really nice move right there their first round pick a year ago and you know he’s here paired up with Brandon Miller um and Nick Smith is a guy that can get his own shot you saw it right there great job getting downhill planting spin away from the defender with a nice touch he’s got a knack for scoring joias throws that one away brings us to a timeout here in Vegas Charlotte extending its lead NBA 2K 25 summer league is proudly sponsored by NBA 2k2 ball over everything rated E for everyone where comfortable you are as a second year guy getting that taste of the league Nick Smith certainly has that gets his second bucket Morgan a sweet shooter out of Cornell hitting a three on his first attempt from summer league in his fourth Summer League and the early route out for Charlotte Nick’s got to get going they missed their first six then made three in a row and have gone 0 for seven since three-pointer missed by the Hornets rocus jacobitus from was uh porn in Spain but is Lithuanian number 32 in right right now and there’s your look at ton Salon 69 210 pounder still only 18 years of age 18 uh the main way he’s going to impact the game offensively at this stage of his career is going to be primarily as a space out three-point shooter very very nice shooting stroke very comfortable from out there he does some nice action as well off of down screens reading curls he can he can work along the Baseline that’s going to be a little bit harder for him at the NBA level right now but this the sixth pick in the draft uh he’s 18 years old no rush you’re just going to hope you got it right and you’ll know that a few years down the road but right now he can step out and shoot the basketball and here he goes into the fast break two three-pointers up that one missed that time by Matt Morgan Salon is wearing a purplish knee brace or at least a covering lacerated that knee the reason he missed the California classic is jacobitas scores for the Knicks tough move right there for jacobitas again great strength use that shoulder to get the defender to back up on his p ation and little kiss off the glass joh kidas who is a Nick summer leager back in 2021 free throw line jumper good for James Banks II got a number of players in our game that were in the championship round of the G League last year Banks one of them played for the Maine Celtics who fell to Oklahoma City final minute first quarter Corner three not there Salon could come up with the rebound and demitro sapin scapin coming up with the bucket and a backourt foul with 43.9 Matt Morgan undrafted back in 2019 he’s actually a conquered North Carolina native went to high school with leaky black who’s a summer league teammate you know I don’t think we had a single seven-footer on the floor yesterday in our first game there’s three of them today that are going to see the court so that’s a great point when I saw scin put that back in I realized yeah there you go there’s a seven foter getting some work done played in the G league with Westchester Knicks was a real good screen and roll threat and can pass the ball pretty well too average just north of three dimes per game in the G League shot clock off end of the first quarter ball in the hands of Xavier Simpson Morris from the mid-range coming up [Applause] [Music] short end of the first quarter welcome those just watch Tennis on ESPN 2 from Wimbledon the Charlotte Hornets and New York Knicks game one of our four games on ESPN 2 today and tonight hornets have the lead let’s go to George thanks KY Nick Smith Jr was here with us Nick you guys jumped out to a big lead how’d you do it uh we just came out with the game plan you know they got they got a couple Shooters we wanted to just contain them and then uh they like to drive uh to the basket a lot so we just wanted to contain that and you know we’re just trying to follow up with the game plan usually in these settings there’s a lot of guys who haven’t played together you have you’re a vet out here along with Brandon what is it like to haveen pry what Brandon Miller’s going to bring in year two because of the way he played the second half of the year and then honestly it’s because of the Victor web minyama effect was really overshadowed the kind of year that had and the kind of year that you know that their team had they had some injuries they had to deal with so they didn’t really have a great year that also hurt eyeballs on him and just the year that wanyama had and and what he represents kind of really made him live in his shadow but Brandon Miller had an exceptional rookie year I know a lot of hornets fans who may be tuning in getting a chance to see their first round pick sixth overall ton Salon did not St start but is played since late in the first quarter 31 and teal ceiling right there on the Baseline yeah and daddy a coming off looking for it I love it because he’s got a nice stroke and he’s you know he’s not getting it to fall right now but the shot you can tell the release how quickly he gets into his shot it’s very very promising uh for the 25th pick in the first round yep and you mentioned pacom dier wearing 35 in white another Frenchman the French Revolution continues in fact uh salon and D very uh wellknown with each other as we get salon’s first look from outside missing dier uh selected in the first round Zachary rash number one we saw last night Alex SAR last night salon number six daier grew up playing with SAR and Salon in France and you’re going to see and you saw salon on that it’s kind of what I talked about that’s where he’s comfortable right now and and that one was was a really nice job chasing him off the line to make him put it down but you could see the separation in the length and the release like he’s going to be able to make shots at a pretty early stage of his career along with the offensive rebound on the Jake Stevens Miss from three late clock now entry pass Stevens’s able to pick it up wield couldn’t finish Damen B who played his college ball at TCU is fouled there as he tries to come off a screen Nicks opened up with Tyler kleck their early second round pick at point guard o on the bench right now we’re getting a look at Rus jacobitas and a Lithuania who was a Knicks summer leager a few years ago and back in Las Vegas missing there and jacobas he’s got a little coak Look to Him right I mean another Lefty point guard for the New York KN in similar style to his game as well going to stay in front of Brandon later Simpson who played well in the California League ball handling now fading shot is true very nice quick quick burst right there to separate kep this dribble that’s what you need at the NBA level you’ve got to have a combination dribble to be able to counter something when the defense plays you well on the first move dier nice lifts for demitro scin that was impressive D for a big guy to come off that curl down the lane and that throws the left-handed to pass for an easy put back well the Knicks have trailed from the very start of the game closest it was was seven to five Charlotte though shot the ball well and the Knicks have really struggled in this first half as dier misses from [Music] outside this a great find right here downhill left just perfectly placed right there Tyler kak has re-entered the game on for the Knicks those just joining us on ESPN 2 getting their first look at him last three years playing at Marquette was the Koozie award finalist for best point guard and led the nation in assist per game this year almost eight lot of excitement with this New York franchise with what they accomplished a year ago with the Personnel move that they made unfortunately for the Knicks as their season wound down against the Indiana Pacers they were the walking wounded shortest rotation you’ll ever see in a playoff series uh they ran out of gas against a very good Indiana Pacers team but the excitement and the expectation based on that success that they had a year ago and and you know the anticipation everyone will be healthy this year at the start of the Season uh has people really think of the Knicks can challenge in the Eastern Conference at least you know right now we’re asking who could be that last team standing against the Boston Celtics cuz clearly they’re the measuring stick for everybody in the Eastern Conference and we’re going to see the summer league 76ers coming up next year as Damen B hits a three and many wondering all the moves they made we haven’t had an Eastern conference with three teams with at least 55 wins that’s setting a high bar but here we are at summer league and maybe thinking about those three teams could do that Boston New York and Philly yeah you’re going to have to get a Rolodex to find out who’s on the FI six right their their entire roster looks different except for a couple of those Stars at the top and a couple other key role players that they’re bringing back Kyle Lowry just resigned to come back uh Kelly UB is coming back but of course Paul George the big signing we’ll talk a lot more about that in the second game there’s a look at the east of course uh Milwaukee had disappointed uh the Knicks with 50 wins and the Celtics who won the championship weren’t really tested through it’s not fair to say that that you know didn’t face the stiffest of competition you play who you play uh but it was just an incredible Year from day one to game five of the NBA finals for the Celtics getting their 18th championship [Music] right here a 30-9 lead for the Hornets we know about the Knicks who are getting healthy here in the off season and looking forward to next season the Hornets legs real rebuilding process 21 wins last year uh Charles Lee is their new head coach speaking of the Celtics former Celtic assistant and we’ll hope to hear from him shortly uh but Charlotte rebuilding and rebuilding around Brandon Miller who’s still on the floor getting some summer league action in Brandon Miller the lamelo ball um this has got to be uh for Charles Lee they’re trying to just do a fresh reset with this organization and a lot of that’s going to come down to the help of that back court the emergence continued growth of Brandon Miller um Nick Smith is going to have a more prominent role with this team Mark Williams is a guy that they got gave a lot of minutes to in the center’s position last year they’re looking for continued growth from him miles Bridges resigned so uh you know listen when when you had that kind of year and the injuries played a part and the losing and now you got a fresh coach and then it’s a total reset the the philosophy the identity uh everything is going to be different now going forward and we’re going to get an opportunity to talk with Charles Lee hopefully and then go over some of that hornets have to be happy with the Summer League start so far and Matt Morgan missing a three out of the corner Jacob toppen will leave it for kak to set up the offense T gritty and competitive were the three words that Shaka smart used on Tyler klech who’s waiting out on the perimeter late in the clock hak dier late first round pick somehow F takapu gets the bucket and I like his touch in the paint he somehow he’s Lefty he always gets to that right shoulder when he wants to uh plays very very hard but I’ve been very impressed uh with his ability to have soft touch inside of 10 ft Jake Stevens found himself free misses the three-pointer badly as we hit the 5 minute Mark to go here in the first half nice cut by toppin on the dime from Tyler kak and it’s a small sample size here with K but I tell you right now as a shooter that’s the dream point guard right there always head on a swivel finding his teammates and making them better St with the Boston Celtics could not have been easier to work work two jobs at once well thank you guys first of all for having me uh really excited to be here talking with you excited to be the new Hornet head coach and uh it was a thrill actually working both jobs like you get to prepare for a Championship Playoff run and then on the other hand you got to put together as staff and start building relationships with a really talented young team well I will Echo what custy said and congratulating you but before we begin anything most important question DC native oh yes sir Commander fan uh yes go it’s actually ticket holder are you it’s a little awkward sometimes even call them commanders I’m just so used to call by their name I force myself to say that so I’m glad we got that out of the way early so you and I are definitely Compadres here uh listen first first things first talk about Brandon Miller being here elected to play I don’t know if you’ve heard he’s only going to play one game we’re not sure if that’s truth but just talk about Brandon Miller uh what you what you saw out of him in year one as an opposing coach and now what it’s going to look like in year two for him going forward yeah you know I’m very excited that Brandon uh when we sat down and talked to told him about the opportunity to play in Summer League it was exactly that it was an opportunity for him to just continue to get more reps um and as he continues to grow in this league uh he’s one of our better players on this young core and so the team is going to follow his lead and it was really important for him to come out here and play and work hard and practice and do everything that it takes uh to build the appropriate Foundation that we need in Charlotte he was part of the select team as well here in Vegas as Team USA was getting set for the Olympics how important is that for him to have that experience with those players at this age oh it’s it’s a tremendous experience and great exposure for him and even talking to him it was just good for him to see how he matches up with uh some of the best talent uh in in our league there you look at Brandon Miller stats legs yeah I’ve was so impressed particularly the second half of his rookie year as he got more and more comfortable I expect that three-point number to come up this year uh as he just gets more comfortable with the space that he can utilize to get that shot off but you’ve got you mentioned the young core they about some of those pieces and what this looks like for you coming in obviously Lamela ball 22 games last year that’s all we saw him he’s an elite level Talent he’s special the way that he makes people better the way that he can take over games as a scorer as well so just talk about some of those young pieces that you’re talking about and excited to work with oh for sure well I love that graphic that was up there he shoots 37% and so talking to him I’m like Hey how do we uh maybe shoot one or two less mid-range jumpers they get you some more catch and shootter off the dribble threes and I think so far in summerly we’ve seen them come off with some screens early on and and look for that three-point shot that is uh so so lethal and uh a strong part of his game that’s going to open up the spacing for our floor but like you said too lamelo um I think he’s really focused on just trying to be healthy this year uh it was uh unfortunate that he was unable to play in more games and I think that that is what’s motivated him this off season to just really focus on his body get in the gym consistently and and be available for us cuz he can do it on both ends of the Court like you said he makes everyone around them better um I think obviously trying to get Mark Williams back healthy he’s another guy that’s going to change how we can play on both ends of the on the court and uh and I think we’ve added some really good youth guy uh young guys in uh tjan and KJ yeah your first look at tjan Salon obviously um the knee kept them from the California classic what have you seen in practice and so far not even two quarters of Summer leue he plays so hard and like it’s infectious and he’s got an infectious personality to him too uh the first day he got to Charlotte for his press conference um after getting drafted he was like hey coach when can we go to the gym now and I was like can we do your press conference first and intro you and then we’ll we’ll find some time to get over to the gym but uh we just need more guys that love the game they love to work and they’re obsessed with a daily Improvement what’s the biggest challenge coming in situation obviously you know they they 21 wins I believe a year ago so you had injuries to deal with you had you know not a a lot of success in terms of winning what’s the message what’s the identity what are you trying to establish here early with this group uh the focus is be building uh consistent habits and uh we have to learn how to win and we have to consistently do that and I think that if we just focus on coming in every day working as hard as we can competing as hard as we can um and staying together through the ups and the Downs of a season uh we’re going to have a lot of success and then like you just mentioned we’ve been kind of snake bitten injury-wise but we got to do all of our work early and that’s why this offseason’s been really important for us as we start to uh uh revamp our training staff as well to make sure that these guys physically are in a good space physically and mentally to be honest Mike buen holer won a championship he was the head coach with you in Milwaukee obviously uh Joe Missoula just in the last month or so what do you take from those two coaches as you look to create your own uh you know both guys phenomenal coaches Championship caliber uh the thing that I learned from both of them is just being prepared and being obsessed with getting better every day um you know there was never go hang on to that thought for a second we got a quick break during the timeout but I want to I want to hear your thoughts on that in a moment Charles Lee staying with us the Hornets head coach will be back in just a moment he be perfect person to ask about I felt like his next evolution of his game came when he developed counter moves off the dribble to the initial good defense is that the next step for Brandon Miller I saw him start to do that the second half of last year but I still think there’s more there okay Nick Smith how about that move another young Talent right there he’s been phenomenal during both F summer leagues too um but to the point about Brandon uh I think part of that to having a counter move is starting to get stronger too and being a little bit more physical so you got to be able to absorb that first uh bit of contact and then play through it to get to your counters and so he’s really focused this summer too um off the court of just getting a little bit stronger putting some pounds on you saw it live but here’s that move from Nick Smith Jr Dwayne Washington had no chance and he loves that little left hand pick up so smooth all right we’re going to run out of time so I got to ask you to finish that thought okay oh we got a break uh look at me starting a story with two outs in the inning again we got got another timeout thanks for stopping by I know I know how much uh coach Missoula meant to you coach best of luck to you thank you guys coach butd as well good luck in Charlotte Charles Lee joining us end of the half coming up from Vegas in a moment [Music] the [Music] coming up next our quadruple header continues with the Pistons and the Sixers and then the night cap San Antonio in Portland followed by the Suns and warriors rounding out the night right here on ESPN 2 and that Spurs Blazers game should be fun if you’re Yukon fan especially uh Stefan Castle the number four pick will play for the Spurs Donovan clling in the 72 Center was the seventh pick overall by Portland so a lot of great basketball and legs for those maybe aren’t as familiar with Summer League you buy a ticket you come in here you got games all day and if you get bored you can uh just walk up to the Pavilion which is right next door d a slams there and go see four other games best bargain in basketball without a doubt and you know not just the guys that you’re going to see on the court who you know some of these guys you as a fan might not be as familiar with but you never know who’s going to walk in the arena and sit Courtside which is a and I was talking to some some some youngsters yesterday that were here that had big smiles on their faces and they had some programs and a bunch of signatures and I was asking them are you seeing you know any big names and they they when they were so excited to talk about some of the guys they saw yesterday and there’ll be more rolling through every day of this league it’s awesome and while the Knicks are starting to dominate uh from the paint uh Nick Smith lighting it up from outside now up to 15 points after that last three-pointer his third of the half nine of his 15 have come here in the second I’m really glad Nick Smith had that moment while we had Charles Leon because that was going to be the next place I wanted to go and I felt like you I wanted to get to Nick Smith and that set it up perfectly he can really score and you know first round pick and now he’s in year two and you pair him with Brandon Miller I that’s that’s something to be really really excited about particularly with lamelo at the point making those guys better Mark Williams are glad he mentioned him as well you and I had talked about him uh how impressed I was with his motor and what he was able to bring to to the center position for them a year ago and Josh Green also kind of an under the radar pickup from Dallas guy who is you know at the very end of a rotation with the Mavericks who went to the NBA finals and now will find himself probably in the starting lineup for yeah they also added Grant Williams in a trade with Dallas uh when PJ Washington went to Dallas which had a huge impact on the Mavericks um and so now he’s gonna have a full season under his belt in Charlotte as well as a veteran guy and a guy that defends and can shoot the threee final 10 seconds of the first half Smith not there but Miller I guess was not in the cylinder able to tip it home and he just gestured to Nick Smith said man throw that thing up I wanted a lob on that but he’ll get two points either way but it’s not going to be the spectacular L instead it’s a spectacular Tipp in oh the Miller and Smith show they’ve combined for 26 here in the half yeah right there you saw Brandon Miller had his left hand in the air he was saying throw that thing up but uh Nick Smith said man I’m feeling it right now what are you talking about I’m going to get another one up and Brandon Miller follows it for the putback N seconds on that Charlotte foul Hornets over the limit the 10 foul limit so free throws for Washington and just real quick as I’m watching Tyler kak play he he’s actually encouraging me now to start stretching and and get back in shape because he is incredible the the way that he sees the floor um and how quickly he delivers the basketball and this is this is the first half I’ve seen him play in person but it stands out he is going to become quickly a a crowd favorite in New York with the way that he plays the energy the motor but most importantly just how well he delivers the basketball all over the four disperses it collect the number 34 pick in the draft a couple of weeks ago and that’s going to be the half it here as the Charlotte Hornets had a pretty sizable lead in the first half nice comeback by the Knicks seven-point lead but it was Brandon Miller and Nick Smith who led the way in the half yeah the two vets right two guys already got some seasoning under their belts got charlot off to a great start here in the first half lead by seven Nick Smith with the play of the half [Music] welcome back to the NBA 2K 25 summer league we’re in Las Vegas and we’re about to start the second half Charlotte Hornets who went unbeaten in the California classic have the lead by seven over the Knicks here at the break wor Thomas and Max Center and Brandon Miller is wired for us from the [Music] Hornets keep running blue stay out my ball my ball my ball good de great defense yo James James when he go just show your hands show your hand you got that go downhill right downhill cre something grizzled veteran in age 21 and having fun as well as we get set for the start of the uh third quarter of action here Mark ker Tim legler George Sedano with you and Brandon Miller coming out firing in this is indeed his only summer league action yeah and the top names in this game did not disappoint in the first half Nick Smith Jr Brandon Miller combined for 26 points for the Hornes Tyler KCK I thought was Sensational uh running the show five assists no turnovers uh good halves by the way Jacob Topp and Dwayne Washington Junior also both in double figures in the first half yep uh topping with 11 Washington with 10 but it was the combination of Miller and Smith that really powered Charlotte especially in that second quarter they combined for 17 or their 20 point yeah I me I think you know Nick Smith is a guy that obviously when you have a pick as high as Brandon Miller you’re going to be overshadowed a little bit as a fellow rookie but I’m very impressed with his quickness his ability to get into his own shot he slides his feet very well defensively expect a big step forward in year two for Nick Smith Jr this man right here Tyler kak I know he impressed you in the first half no turnovers in his 14 minutes in the first half though we have a turnover on a 24 second violation 24 second violation does that go and his turnover believe I don’t believe it do that’s a team turnover all right good keep that sheet clean Tyler that’s right Tyler kak one of four draft picks by the Knicks a couple of weeks ago he was their second of the four early second round Uh Kevin mcculler Junior who starred at Kansas played at Texas Tech earlier was unavailable late in the season for Kansas for the NCAA tournament because of the injury that he’s still rehabing and is not here in Las Vegas with the Knicks and we should also mention along those lines for Charlotte KJ Simpson not here their second round pick 42nd pick uh from Colorado a guy I really like his ability also to find to score deep range with his shooting stroke uh not participating this summer for Charlotte yeah KJ uh injured his hamstring during the pre-draft uh setup and they’re going to just uh sit him out and he’ll be ready to go for the start of training camp in couple of months and here’s the Knick’s first round pick pacom dier will get to the free throw line drawing the contact inside and fortunate to get that call cuz he had a wide open shot co that created for him got into the paint drew two kicked out he had a wide open like 20 foot jumper turned it down uh maybe because he didn’t shoot well from the perimeter in the first half decided try to get something easier ended up with a very difficult shot at The Rim but it’s going to earn himself a couple of free throws well the New York Knicks 50 wins team a year ago obviously defense the specialty under their longstanding head coach and we saw Tom tiido earlier he’s to our left down the way over there and watching these guys they’ve got a great team coming back they like how they’re set up we’re going to talk to uh W Adrien morowski coming up after our first time out here with more details on Jaylen Brunson cuz you and I were kind of finding out live here right as the w hit taking less money for the Knicks for a little more flexibility yeah I can’t wait to hear W break all that down uh something tells me jayen Brun is going to get that money at some point but it is a is a big story and I think W is the perfect guy to come on and kind of let people know how that all played out absolutely like a little short Charlotte Hornets with him I could not have been more impressed with Charles Lee always had you know anytime he had a chance to talk with him as an assistant coach but just in those few minutes with us as Brandon Miller knocks home another triple uh you were telling me he’s not even 40 years of age yet not 40 and it told me you know he’s a DC guy so he was back at us a Arena when I was playing for the bullets which is which is fun to hear because you know it’s they’re now the Wizards obviously for a long time I was there during the crossover two years of bullet two years of wizard and uh Charles Lee remembers uh I think the better days at that time for the bullets cuz when we first went down to uh downtown to DC uh things didn’t necessarily go well for the organization so it was nice to hear him say he reflected on coming to see me play when I was in bullet it’s a fun place to watch a game and and like Charlotte Washington is in rebuild mode this will go out of bounds to the Knicks now we’re look at Charles Lee he’s enjoying watching Brandon Miller who’s spraying it all over the floor tonight four of eight from three well as as a young coach you’re coming in and and this is one of your focal points offensively you love the fact that he doesn’t have any holes in his game he can handle it he’s got mid-range ability he’s Got Deep shooting ability off the dribble he runs in transition he’s athletic if you want to use him as a weak side cutter or a slasher so when you’ve got that kind of offensive Firepower at your disposal as a young coach you’ve got a blank board in front of you and how you want to utilize Brandon Miller and get the most out of Miller taking on dier the first rounder bulling him into the lane and a little Wheeling 360 Fay try to stop that room and that was that quote in quotes now veteran uh experience for Brandon Miller was one year in the league he was patient there you’d see a younger player maybe or maybe even Brandon Miller a year ago maybe would have taken that first one that was going to be contested but instead used multiple pivots to create separation for the little lean back jump shot 16 points for Brandon Miller let’s take a look yeah similar defense actually to the play in the first half if you remember when he traveled that that’s exactly the same level defense but that time Brandon Miller stayed with it kept his pivot one more reverse pivot gets away from the defense a second Defender comes over but it’s too late Hornet right now enjoying a nine-point lead over the Knicks here Midway through the second quarter first of four games coming up at Thomas and Mack the other thing about Charles Lee Charles Lee was interesting as he was leaving our set he was had the uh the box score in front of him was already upset by the fact that 20 points in the second quarter I loved it another three for Brandon Miller who’s got 19 points and five triples I don’t know if he said it on the air or if he said it off the air we’ve had great starts so far in summer league second quarter not as much timeout here w Is On Deck we’ll welcome us to our set coming up after the break and Brandon Miller 19 points five [Music] triples yeah well there’s an a tournament across the way I’ll be over there later and I’m shocked Only One telephone if You’ given me an over under I would have said set it at 2 and a half where we were but uh obviously busy time the NBA never ends for you let’s get into the uh the Brunson story and exactly what he has done for the Knicks and the financial flexibility coming up well Jaylen Brunson made a decision you do not see not just in the NBA but but really maybe in anywhere in Pro Sports especially in the era of the max contract he essentially took a four-year deal this year um that allows the Knicks as opposed to waiting till next year when he would have been guaranteed a 13 15 million more next year in his free agency by doing that he allows the Knicks to stay under that second apron you hear about but to give them the the flexibility with their roster and their payroll to not just keep this team together but to be able to continue to make moves because if you go over that second apron you lose your ability to do certain kind of trades and draft picks and a lot of it and essentially brunson’s going to lose $37 million that he will not get back but he he’s eligible for extensions in three four years uh that will make back that 113 but you just don’t see players give back 40 million and listen I think it’s a lot easier for a player to do that when he when he knows what it looks like you’re not say to a player take less so we can go out and build a team around you he’s got the team around him he knows the group they just add Mel Bridges we just saw Courtside he knows the group he’s trying to keep and thinks that this gives the Knicks a chance to compete for a championship for several years now it’s a great point the team is ascending and Jaylen Brunson feels that I made a joke yesterday when this topic came up I said as if they he wasn’t already beloved enough in New York and he does something like this uh talk about a little bit about what that next deal could look like though for Jaylen Brun well he would be eligible for a 4year uh $323 million deal in 28 if he waits till 29 that becomes a $418 million deal if he was the weight camax then with the new television money coming in these contract numbers are going to we’re going to see a 500 million uh deal you’re going to see players making $100 million because of the revenue that’s coming in it’s shared between the players and and the league so he’s going to have the opportunity to make it back but in the prime of his career right now he gives them a chance uh to be able to keep Bridges and ogan and noi just signed a $200 million deal coach stay with us here we got some more with you we got a Timeout on the floor dig more into the Jaylen Brunson news for the Knicks next and more importantly resigning him they’re going to be able to keep this group Mel Bridges who comes in he’ll be extension eligible here in the next year and for the Knicks they not only do you add these players you have the opportunity because of the decision Jaylen run made to keep them all and what about flexibility for additional pieces because yeah it seems like maybe they have everything you need but look when you’re talking about competing with a team like the Boston Celtics which is the Benchmark right now not just in the East but in the NBA what kind of flexibility also does that give them moving forward by making that decision well the one thing that Knicks did a really good job of was hoarding a lot of draft picks Gathering up lots of picks and Deals they used what five of them in the trade with Brooklyn to get Bridges but they still have at least four first round picks so they have picks to put in another potential deal they have big contracts that you can move so if there’s another big star player that becomes available if that’s what they decide they want to go after that they can be in that game but you know what’s unique about this Knicks team and you know we talk about that Villanova connection that Villanova group and we’ll see Mel Bridges when he’s added to it I think they’ve all been better together in the NBA than any of them were apart from each other in the NBA and that’s remarkable well thought for our our Charlotte Hornets fans also tuning in today we we had uh Charles Lee with us out standing coach great pedigree uh Jeff Peterson another guy who is Young and has a lot of experience his first GM job uh Charlotte trying to turn things around and Brandon Miller obviously we get his one and only Summer League game and he is delivered yeah Brandon Miller is a future Allstar all NBA player in this league I mean he is everything and more they thought he’d be but I think that new ownership here and there court side Rick schn Gabe Plotkin you have seen dramatic change in this organization I think modernizing it uh from top to bottom and you mentioned Jeff Peterson coming in from from the Nets and and Charles Lee coming from a championship in Boston um you know they’ve done a good job in the last several months of gathering picks and young players they keep miles Bridges they have a very good one two three with Lelo bar miles Bridges and you know Brandon Miller uh they have the infrastructure of a very good team in the East coming coming down the road and great timing cuz tjon Salon with the four points and a chance for five after that one right there and there’s lamelo ball missed 60 games last year miles Bridges resigned and Brandon Miller uh who was the number two pick in the draft not only the 17 points per game but the three-point shooting was uh terrific last year for them so they’re hoping they got the seeds of something bigger coming down the road yeah salon’s an interesting player I think maybe the youngest player in the draft 18 years old still raw but what they loved about him was how hard he plays how much he loves to play the work you know he’ll be a project for them but you just look you look at the body and you know the the upside of him they they that was somebody they targeted and you know took it number six with with a lot of good players still on the board and the thing I like is I just love his shooting mechanics he’s got a really pure stroke and he’s got such length I think his his main contribution offensively early in his career is going to be he can make shots now he he’s got that kind of range that kind of to get it off he’s very very young and uh he’s the kind of guy you can’t wait to see what that can look like in two to three years yeah now this is I think for Charlotte they’re in a position where I think they’re going to be competitive and I think lamelo Ball’s health is a huge part of that they need him on the floor but you can bring along guys like Salon you can continue you know you know they brought in Josh Green this summer who was a starter in Dallas who’s still 23 years old and you know you see the the the makings and the outline here of of a sustainable good team in the NBA w we thank you for spending some time with us I you’re a busy man thanks for coming on with us apprciate breaking it down Adrian maranowski ESPN NBA Insider Deluxe joining us here in Las Vegas as we wind down the third quarter and a foul before that jacobitus shot as Charlotte legs still with an uh six-point lead here in the summer league and Brandon Miller picking up where he left off has been terrific so far in the game and Xavier Simpson up to 10 points three guys in double figures so far and while W was on and we were talking with him about uh some of the things both Nick and Hornet related uh we saw T TJ salon at backto back baskets which is good to see and I loved his enthusiasm and exuberance uh you know the fist pump after the three-point play opportunity but he had a nice little put back along the Baseline uh and then he got that ball in transition got into the body of the defender and softly off the glass with a three-point opportunity yeah we got both there lottery picks from the last two years on the floor together with Miller and salon and Josh longstaff is the summer league coach for Charlotte and I felt like he probably told young MR Salon be a little more aggressive in this half because you could you sense a little different uh uptick from him so far here in the third there’s a look at Josh over on the sideline no doubt man these top pick especially the top 10 picks in the draft and then this young you come in this is a lot you know you’re pressing you want so badly to do well um and you got to let the game come to you a little bit so a half under Bel playing better here in the second half Damen ball with the steel and the score and one opportunity played in the G League last year with South Bay Lakers here’s a look at ball great job I love seeing Defenders not concede the inbounds pass on a side out of bounds it’s a it’s a pet peeve of mine I think too often they just we just allow guys to catch the ball wherever they want on a sideline out of bounds not the case right there get in that passing Lane and force a mistake and an opportunity for yourself from the open floor at the line 15 146 rather is uh or sorry let me get that straight 155 is the Run for the Knicks right now to get back in this game down three minute 14 to go here in the third Miller duck it in had the shot blocked out of bounds it’ll stay with the Hornets with seven to shoot you know we had mentioned Josh longstaff who is the uh summer league head coach you don’t have a lot of guys that go from high school to the NBA in coaching he was a high school coach in Maine Billy Donovan who had a chance to see earlier the Chicago Bulls coach then with Oklahoma City I brought him into the video room back in 2010 and uh he’s been working in the NBA ever since it’s a great story and it goes to show you you know you you put the work in and you and you are diligent about what you’re doing and you find something to make yourself unique and you bring something to the table and value added to that coaching room every day and people are going to notice that and you stay on that path and you end up here coaching a team in the Vegas summer leue Miller late clock missing he went from Billy Donovan to the Knicks as an assistant and a Player Development coach and then was with Milwaukee so he’s been with some tremendous coaches along the way Salon contact waiting on the whistle and it is a Nicks foul with 50 seconds to go here in the third running the floor well he’s got a good stride got out little bit of a side step there to make sure he got the contact and he did not commit an offensive foul we’ll take a look here right there just steps to the middle to make sure he doesn’t hit that Defender flush which would have been an offensive foul nice job there and knock for getting himself to the line now on scapin there as we remind you summer league action continues tonight here in Las Vegas NBA TV ESPN the ESPN app here’s the NBA TV Prime Time lineup with the Thunder and Toronto at 8:30 Eastern Time follow Follow by Utah and Dallas 10:30 Eastern on NBA TV final 45 seconds of the third quarter as the Knicks have clawed back into this one down just four rocus jacobitas into the corner and a three pops out from Justin Lewis and Brandon Miller there on the defensive glass and I think that’s another area of growth for Brandon Miller that four boards a game a year ago I think he’s got the length and the ability as he gets stronger to be more of a contributor on the defensive glass because that that’s a big part of your team defense is being able to secure the basketball after one shot and you need help from your wings to be able to do that and I think Brandon Miller has the capability to do that as his body continues to mature and you saw right there he went up in traffic and got a nice defensive rebound Brandon Miller who uh spent this summer also training with Paul George then Clipper now Philadelphia 7 sixer apparently has gained 5 lbs of muscle here’s a little look yeah you that’s what you you’ve got to be able to to to do your share as a wing on the glass I think a good number for a for an athletic Wing in this league is to be in that seven to eight range uh anywhere from six to eight really as as you’re pulling your weight on the defensive glass and I think that’s going to be a target for Brandon Miller this year average 17 and4 last year and with that free throw he’s got 21- seven that’s a nice healthy summer leag line yeah I mean I think you could plug Brandon Miller into any game anywhere at any time with even guys he doesn’t know and Brandon Miller is going to get numbers uh because it just comes naturally to him he’s he’s he’s got a great talent uh command of the basketball and a soft touch with range so he’s going to put up numbers no matter where he is and again we’re just everyone’s excited to see what his year two is going to look like you mentioned it earlier between Victor wanyama and Mr holr out in Oklahoma City who of course missed what would have been his true rookie season so you had uh two outstanding rookie players last year WBY of course winning the Rookie of the Year and lost somewhat was Brandon Miller season as jaidas is at the free throw line the Emirates NBA cup is tipping off November 12th the much anticipated tournament returns all 30 teams competing in group play eight advancing to The Knockout rounds at all ends here in Las Vegas in December but only one Champion can capture the NBA cup VIs at nba.com NBA cup to learn more and the Hornets and the Knicks by the way were drawn into the same group uh yesterday both into East group a along with Philadelphia Brooklyn and Orlando and I was watching the BR you were on the broadcast so uh Richard Jefferson had deemed uh Group C no doubt from the West as the group of death I don’t know you have them in front of yeah yeah so it was Denver I believe right Dallas Denver Dallas Golden State Golden State Memphis and New Orleans and Pelicans right so these are all Bonafide already playoff teams in the west and then you’ve got that wild card team in Memphis which people forget I guess what their potential could be if they get all those guys back you get John Morant for an entire season that’s a very talented team the Memphis Grizzlies to me are one of the biggest wild cards in the entire NBA so I don’t know who Golden State ticked off to be in that group but that that is murderer row Group C in the west and you guys mentioned it last night Golden State Dallas that that should be fun with Klay Thompson against his former teammates that was fun it was a great setup last year Tuesdays and Thursdays it was cup night uh the floors were wild the kids loved it I was here for Vegas for the semis and finals are tweaking it a little bit this year with a Saturday Tuesday semis and finals and uh should be a lot of fun league did a great job with the idea the creativity behind it what what we were wondering about was where we going to get the full player commitment like the emotional investment in it to make it special and we absolutely did so it was a win-win for everybody we’ve got a four-point game we’re through three quarters quarter four from Vegas coming up next by 15 points at one point and right now that lead is down to two yeah really slow start for the Knicks offensively we talked about that but they have found their Rhythm here basically from the middle of the second quarter on and now we’re going to have great finish looks like over this last n and a half minutes Hornet played three games in the California classic won them all Xavier Simpson was one of the reasons with is assisting that time sends it in the corner to Leaky black for a big triple lcky black two-time ACC all defender in his second summer league with the Hornets jaab bidas tried the square and overcooked it that time but fortunate off the Charlotte out of bounds and nice move by jackob just a little bit too much on that one and goes to the opposite side of the glass but nice job right there creating some space on that penetration for a clean look both these teams opening their summer league play both get an extra day off their next game’s coming up on Tuesday so a little more practice Time Jumper is missed that time by Justin Lewis and chased down by black Brandon Miller trying to sneak in on the backside and that time scapin and that big body got in the way great job by scin seeing that I didn’t think he was aware there was a rim Runner behind him but got back for the deflection to tiito Courtside loved it Simpson going to line up a three and hits a big triple played really well today and you said it he he already had some games under his belt in which he played very well for Charlotte earlier in the summer and he’s really feeling it today 13 points to go with seven assists that was his number up in California was right about the seven Mark per game Lewis Corner three missing again this is going to lead to a break three onone Hornets Morgan slides it [Music] in Matt Morgan the Aged veteran here at Summer League this is his fourth summer league was last with the Clippers a couple of years ago nice work with the right hand bring it up but someone said the sphere was melting you know the big uh orb that’s by the way if you haven’t I haven’t been in it I’ve seen it outside it either I talked to some people earlier today that have been in it and saw a concert there just ridiculous mindblowing experience so that’s on my list looks it honestly when you first see it it’s like the eighth wonder of the world it looks like the aliens drop something that just sitting in the middle of Las Vegas it’s absolutely incredible what they’re able to do with that last year uh for summer league uh they had the sphere set up like a an orange basketball and it looked so real even at that humongous size and then I did have some friends also who uh went to the You2 concert while we were here for um for the cup now named the NBA cup then in season tournament and they just said yeah mind blowing because you just your brain can’t can’t function with everything that’s going on in front of you as if you two already wouldn’t be great enough got the visual enhancement of that that’s it’s incredible Tyler kle lines up a triple that’s a big hit for the Knicks and he you know that’s one thing I loved about him in college I felt like he just does not miss open looks and you wouldn’t call him necessarily a classic shooter but but it goes in at a really high rate and and he gets a clean look there every other part of his game has been on point today his perimeter defense laterally has been great his playmaking I’ve talked about a lot Next Level he contributes as a long defensive rebounder and then there he shows you what he’s capable of doing when he gets some a little bit of space from the three-point line really impressed overall with his game the Big East Player of the Year in the 2223 season also played the year at George Mason before he got going at Marquette as Jake Stevens the big Charlotte Center misses a three and now the Knicks on the comeback Trail once again toen thought about stepping into that three goes right into Stevens and picks up the foul Stevens thinks he got all ball looked like a lot of contact from here but that was a nice hard strong direct line dribble drive by Jacob toic um you know when you do something like that you’re forcing a call to be made uh you’re drawing the contact and taking the action right to the defender that replay and Stevens might be right as Jac to Jacob toppen will head to the free throw line the second of two toppins who played for the Knicks of course Obie uh now with the Indiana Pacers was a Nick and won a slam dunk contest and Jacob of course participated in the slam dunk last year what a WNBA double header we have for you tomorrow afternoon uh the sun host Diana terazzi and the Mercury at one Eastern on ABC and then over on ESPN Caitlyn Clark and the fever square off against the Minnesota links WNBA countdown will tip off pregame coverage of each game at 12:30 eastern time I think I saw a crawl earlier today that angel Reese’s double double streak came to an end earlier today as Xavier Simpson scores for sh really really like Xavier Simpson’s game uh he’s very sure of himself out here and and that next level quickness is allowing him to get where he needs to on the court that was the most difficult shot I think he’s taken today but this showed great touch going to his right big shot Blocker on the backside and goes up and over Him Softly off the glass coming up on a double double 15 points nine assists for the Hornets trying to win their Las Vegas summer league opener 5 and a half minutes to go turnover scapin it down to B who checked it up off the glass foul before top in went for that one at 527 left Ball’s had a couple of nice defensive plays in this game we talked earlier about him getting the steel off the sideline inbounds path that led to a breakaway and opportunities at the line and here he the Poke away from Simpson from behind Simpson kind of had him on his back on the snake dribble and ball was able to get that arm in there poke it away and again good things happen when you can create that kind of Havoc you get out and run and reward G yourself for great defense first free throw goes in for Damen ball mentioned played for South Bay was cut by the Lakers in Fall Camp last year played for Jamie Dixon down at TCU for a few years see a lot of the uh summer league rosters you know 15 17 18 names long as we work our way through the 11 days you know Brandon Miller won’t be playing anymore so you got to have some more backend guys as we continue along thanks for reminding me you see my handwritten notes here I got a cramp in my hand last night writing down all these names I don’t know how you got them all into that’s less than 8 and 1 half by 11 some guys only got one line some guys got two just you show that to the camera oh yeah here you go yeah this this is these are all handwritten notes right here that’s impressive this is my my scratch on all these players uh believe me there a lot of guys you you know some I’m already familiar with guys that have in the league a little bit know most of those guys very well obviously goly Brandon Miller I talked about him a lot last season some some guys you got to do your homework on and I’m I’m watched as much film as I could on these guys to get a feel for what they bring to the table and maybe in some cases I I look at the NBA what we call the varsity uh team and what they need and where is there spot where is there a fit I know as a undrafted free agent myself when I came out of L was not drafted went Europe you know the CBA route which is now the G league and you know when those early camps always trying to make teams that’s what you’re trying to find where is there an opportunity at my position to bring something to the team that they need and I remember my uh rookie year of radio broadcasting there was this young man playing for the Omaha Racers named Tim legler and that’s where you get the start you see a lot of guys now you said CBA now G League you see you look down these rosters and almost 75% of the guys who aren’t in the NBA are in the G league in some form absolutely and I remember those days well and it Formed you know my Prof professional career but having a league like that to go play in with that kind of exposure with NBA Scouts watching you every night and it comes down to how bad you want to get out of that league are the guys that eventually get a chance the NBA level and I had some 10-day contracts early and sent back to the CBA and finally got my real I think big breakthrough was when I went to Dallas uh 1992 93 season and I was able to sink or swim they said you’re going to throw you out there and let you play through your mistakes and see if you belong in this league and I was able to prove that I did and a really long run after that James Banks with the putot back there for the Hornets to go back up six toping athletic move ball tipped around Charlotte’s going to come away with it and a young Charles Lee the current Hornets coach was watching you in those Washington Bullets days back then we learned earlier today by the way Omaha Racers was that the exin arena if ibin which you know what ex zarbin is right it took me a few months to figure it out but it’s Nebraska spell back I think I played an entire season there without that I finally hit me one day you know you watch enough uh Cubs games and you remember Harry KY used to always absolutely SP things backwards I should have started there first but you talk about some of those CBA days and like some of the some of the people that were there at the same time you know John Starks and I were playing head to-head in that League Anthony was in that League Flip Saunders was coaching in that League Eric muselman very successful college coach uh was coaching in that league so you know sometimes that’s what it takes and I’m just fortunate and same with these guys a lot of these guys are going to go g League route and then you know if you open enough eyes you’ll get your opportunity I worked for the Albany patroons the three coaches in a row were Phil Jackson Bill muscleman and George Carl not bad not bad at all not bad at all and scapin can’t finish right at the cup for the Knicks three and a half to go oh an and one opportunity for the rookie the number six pick ton Salon best part about that was the catch I mean that’s very impressive Salon we’ve already talked about earlier how he can get out and really fill the wing as a big Wing great running stride but this is a tremendous catch the ball’s delivered on point but to catch that over the defender and get it to the rim that quickly and finish nice job by the big man nobody lik that by the way more than Brandon Miller Brandon Miller was out here at half court on that celebrating for that his team’s number one draft pick who did not play the first three games laceration in the knee you can see that left knee covered making his summer league debut unable to convert there but Salon with eight points and six rebounds in his Charlotte summer debut three and a half minutes to go now an eight-point game and a turnover by the Knicks call him daddy a and you’ll you’ll see that you know what couple times a night in an NBA game right that short Corner catching the ball and the Habit to put one foot back to push off to go extend and try to get some momentum to the rim and you step out of bounds I know the three-point shots become a focal part of the offense but you know feels like 20 years ago you never saw that now you see it multiple times a game Smith takes it to the rim and scores the Brandon Miller and Nick Smith Jr show this afternoon that was nice I think I like that one better than his move in the first first half that put Dwayne Washington Jr on skates because horty got there and he was coming to get a piece of that I thought Nick Smith was going to try to throw this down over him but what body control you know go up high bring it down get to the opposite side of the defender and still have enough wherewith all to get that thing softly up on the glass that’s very impressive an impressive game overall for Nick Smith Jr 19 for Nick Smith who had some pretty good numbers uh to start last year right before the All-Star break uh Nick was at about six points shooting 45 from three and then the last few games second I’ll say after the allstar break third of the season was down to under five points a game and the three-point shooting went down to 36 so uh he’s had some stuff to work on and clearly has as he gets his summer league underway impressively with 19 points and this is one of the things I love about Brandon Miller is you know the ability to give him the ball full court and even against pressure defense like you saw right there and be able to control the basketball manipulate it Advance it get it to where he needs to Misses the three right there but Solano in the offensive glass smart at 18 sends it out with a fresh 14sec shot clock and two and A2 minutes to go protecting a seven-point lead Salon One Step top side three comes up short shot clock violation and that’ll take us to a timeout Hornets seven points up on the Knicks Nick Paul when we come back yeah D yeah that’s my r t salon yeah t you were talking about that when it was happening then you hear it wied he love that man that’s got to make tan feel great getting that from a guy that’s already you know on his way to accomplishing a lot in his lead little backourt pressure by the Knicks the 5sec count was on and Brandon Miller calls a timeout to save the possession with the Knicks now down five Nicks thought they had a turnover there Brandon Miller got that that timeout in about 4.8 if that’s a 5sec Ru got a timeout here in Vegas Brandon Miller in the Hornets trying to hang on off the inbound coming up next [Music] n [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] just this is Vegas this is not the Summer Olympics in Paris but the Eiffel Tower replica on the strip and Vegas the host of the summer league and the Charlotte Hornets and New York Knicks playing their summer league openers Brandon Miller 23 how about a very quiet and a very effective 23 for Dwayne Washington Jr keeping Nick in it probably hasn’t gotten enough talk and these kind of games kind of lend themselves to that because of the nature of the conversation the bigger picture stuff you’re always talking about but he’s been really really good today Dwayne Washington Jr uh very impressed with his motor and his allaround offensive game he’s it in Every Which Way well they will have Nick Smith Jr to inbound as the Knicks have the back court pressure Simpson good ball handler Washington will back off and two minutes to go with the Hornets leading by [Music] five Salon the rookie from France looked for it they reload him out on the wing with five to shoot got the beat on his countryman dier but couldn’t finish there and rebounded by the Knicks nice job by Jacob toppen there on that contest but pretty good effort there by Salon to get something up on the rim when it looked like he had nothing there there’s that call we were just talking about out of bounds Damen B that you just can’t help yourself you want to take that stride back but you can’t take it that big like I said you see that probably twice a night in in an NBA game it’s it’s always a pep peeve of mine you know adjust to that you’re over there either shoot it or put that thing down without stepping back first Hornet by five Nick Smith makes it at eight point game that was a great find Outside Brandon Miller crosscourt to his Compadre Nick Smith Jr stepped right into it he’s been feeling it all day so I kind of had a feeling where that was going to end up but Dwayne Washington J has had a big night and he answers right back it’s getting louder now for Washington 23 26 points on his fourth triple of the ball game with 70 seconds to go banks at the rim with a [Applause] stop 105 left Washington couldn’t get it to go that time and a smile on his face everything’s been falling for him but couldn’t get that [Music] one don’t forget after this one is over we got three more here at Thomas and Ma Center the Pistons and the 76ers will be the next teams up on the floor here at Summer League in Vegas Simpson four to shoot lost the handle got it back went through banks Nicks taken 38 seconds to go down three possession hoppen won’t take the three gets it back and connects let that second look better I guess cuz he had a clean one on the first one I don’t think he caught the ball the right way so he gave it up got it back got a four-point game and now he fouls Nick Smith Jr extend the game with 24 seconds to go in the ball game in Charlotte leading by [Music] four here’s toen didn’t like the first look then played a little catch with Damen B and top in connects he was only one for four from three-point land with the varsity Knicks last year played 25 games in the G league with Westchester hard double at half court they get it to Smith about six seconds difference on the clock be an offensive foul on Smith as Washington Goes Down Smith didn’t want to give up the ball things were getting a little testy and Washington slow to get up thought Dwayne Washington Jr did a really nice job selling that I think I think Nick Smith Jr did sort of lean into him uh Nick Smith Jr was expecting him himself to be grabbed and fouled right there in a four-point game at that time but Dwayne Washington Jr took a little contact and and sold that very well to create an offensive foul and keep the Knicks alive here all right you make the call I think there was you know yeah he ran into the elbow but there was definitely that angle that that’s the first replay I saw that in that angle I like the call his Nick Smith Jr’s right elbow came up and sort of into like the Adams Apple area of Dwayne Washington Jr couldn’t see that from whereever was sitting the first time it happened it looked more like Nick Smith Jr’s shoulder but as you can see here that right arm is going to extend right there catches them up in the head area and I think ultimately that is what led to that offensive foul and they’re also going to go now to review to take a look if there’s a flagrant foul involved here yeah anything you’re talking about above the shoulders in that game again that caught him somewhere in the throat area I don’t think there’s anything there to Warrant a flagrant Claire Aubrey number two on her back is our lead official here for our first game this afternoon japar Kinsey to her right taking a look getting some replays from the replay Center in sarus all the way on the East Coast everything is as it would be mostly in an NBA game here trying to do with the officials and so now this is something the replay Center does not assess they can shoot the show the replays it’s the officials in the building the call on the floor stands as a common foul does not meet the criteria for a playr foul there you go the officials will determine the flagrant on the floor and so common foul let’s take one more look at this like I don’t have the history of of flager fouls for the Vegas summer league but I don’t think there’s been too many so I I agree with this but I do think that’s not a bad call Dwayne Washington Jr just happened to reach in at exactly the same time that Nick Smith Jr extended that arm and it did catch him in the neck area so I’m I’m okay with that call and he gives him Nick’s hope here down four 18 seconds to go they’re going to have to get something here quickly but you don’t have to take the first bad shot you get there’s time here to get downhill and take the two and extend the game there it is K oh he got the Whistle Too off the Miss Xavier Simpson trying to defend so now a chance to make it a two-point game at the free throw line yeah and I think with Tyler colex saw there when he got the ball in the back court he looked up and so you can see everybody on the court for Charlotte was basically chest to chest at the three-point line cuz the last thing you want to give up is a three-point shot in that situation which would cut it to one cuz then even F getting fouled is only going to that best you go up three so you want to take away the three KX saw that he knew he had an opportunity to get to the rim and now a chance to cut this thing to two points with 11.8 so there’s time here still for the Knicks maybe even to get one quick trap before foul on the inbound Co one of the best free throw shooters in the Big East last year as well 85% from the line it’s already a one possession game and now it’s down to two with 11 seconds to go seven points seven rebounds seven assists for kak that’s a good number if you’re in Vegas really good number if you had a few more shots you’re looking at a triple double you know potential night that kind of night for Colette Charlotte beats the 5sec call Miller lost it off his body out of bounds Nick basketball yeah and Brandon Miller’s not complaining at all so he’s not he’s not trying to say it went off a Nick there he dribbled off his leg great pressure there in the back courner that’s what I talked about Cy right after that first free throw I said they have time to get a trap in the back court before you foul look at Brandon Miller is going to be automatic at the line so smart not to foul him but also just try to see can they get this ball Advanced out of a trap before you would consider fouling but as a result they forced the turnover and of course with Tom fiido and some of the Knicks uh in the building defense number one defensive pressure seeing it here in the last minute of play and very effectively so far to give themselves a chance here with 8 seconds to go and what head coaches are looking at not only that the identity that your team has which the Mak we know that’s that’s where they hang their hat you want to see that but also you want to see IQ an end of game execution and being able to make sure that you get quality possessions when you have to don’t turn the ball over defensively that you’re executing what you’re drawing up in a Timeout if you want a trap in a rotation so I think Tom tibo’s got to be happy right there with what the Knicks have done it looked like they were out of the game and now you get an offensive foul that leads the two free those and now a turnover with an opportunity here to tie it or potentially take the lead with a three-pointer well Charlotte led by 10 with 3 minutes and 10 seconds left of the Knicks on a 135 run since yesterday and there’s a look at the scores Miller and Smith each over 20 points Washington with 26 toen who hit a big three pointer earlier has 19 points uh the Brooklyn Nets yesterday forced overtime with Indiana a game uh they were down double digits with time winding down as well and also if there’s an overtime there’s a uh an El amending if you call it will’ll play to seven as Target score the Nets were down four zip in overtime and scored the last seven and won it all right now this is a very strange place to take the ball out this far on the Baseline in the corner I expect the Knicks here to to get the ball into Tyler kx’s hands and run some sort of a two-man game and see if he can create something downhill that that could lead to a kick out looking to inbound 5sec count is on ball FS uping it falls off the front rim with 5 Seconds to go they were that close to tying the game that is a beautifully drawn play you had double curl action around toen who was one of the screeners and both of these both of these cutters were decoys and ultimately led to top and being able to slip to the rim as the third option he just isn’t able to convert the Charlotte Hornets have not trailed at any point today and the Knicks were that close to completing the comeback down 15 just watching Dwayne Washington Jr in front of us kind of look in the crowd and snap his hands with that motion to say we were that close and now two free throws can virtually ended here first one is in for Nick Smith Jr you can ask for better execution uh inbounding the ball that deep on the Baseline is an awkward place for the passer uh because basically the right side of the floor is completely taken away from you because you’re along the sideline so that pass has to go in that direction it’s very hard to find somebody clean like that Nick Smith 24 points two free throws which will seal the game Kenedy a three at the horn doesn’t go and the Hornets still unbeaten in summer league three wins in the California classic and the Hornets win the opener here in Vegas 94 to 90 Charlotte hangs on for the win exciting finish Great Performances out of some guys with some NBA experience and some of the picks these teams playing very very well today 94 to 90 Hornets s over the Knicks as Brandon Miller you mentioned the picks Brandon Miller Nick Smith two guys who’ve got experience under their belt tjon Salon showing some second half as well played really well in his second half he looked a lot more confident showed some of that skill set he’s a really big Wing was able to get some opportunities for himself really super impressed with Tyler klex floor game all around and of course Brandon Miller was the guy we were expecting to focus a lot of attention on and he didn’t disappoint yeah did not play in the California classic ticketed for just one game today we were happy to be able to see him play and you could even sense the confidence of a year behind him playing with the select team last week here in Las Vegas uh his game seems ready to take that next step yeah and we got an opportunity also to speak with Charles Lee uh he’ll be now in command there in Charlotte and and looking at that young Talent as he was sitting here Courtside I’m sure he was very excited about what the future represents for that that young nucleus in Charlotte Charlotte four games four wins Brandon Miller his only summer leue game was impressive and he’s standing by with George thanks Cy Brandon this thing got a little hairy there at the end how are you how are you guys able to pull it out yeah you know I think it’s a great group of guys is coming out here competing at the you know the highest level that we can um I think I think our main our Focus Point uh at the beginning I think we came out with you know the most energy that we had I think that’s what kind of gave us that League early and I think we just maintain the lead you’re one of the Vets out here you and Nick how is that kind of being in that role makes me feel old man I see you know tan coming out here just working hard as he can as a rookie um you know soon we’re going to have KJ back um so just you know excited to see our young guys shine you know what’s been the most impressive part of the young guys like I said just their energy they brought in um you know they they’re willing to listen to anything the vet say including myself um you know just coming in as a I feel like for myself me coming in as a young 21 year old leader um I think the the young guys are going to you know Follow My Lead um as with actions um and I think that’s going to you know help us um get better through the whole season hopefully there’s some health next season with lamelo and you guys you guys can really get going but what’s in store for you coming into next season um I think just bringing the most energy I can helping out my teammates making all the winning plays um I tried to get a charge but I couldn’t get I got a block so I’m looking to get some more charges and just having more fun Brandon congratulations thank you of course of course thank you all right guys back to you all right George and uh Brandon Miller was we thank Kim for wearing the microphone today we had some uh great wired segments including he just talked about he wanted that charge legs and you heard him you know kind of laugh with the official to say yeah you know the official said yeah I was sliding he goes yeah I was sliding and he was laughing everything’s all good for Brandon Miller right now from the uncertainty of being that rookie last year this time this year just the uncertainty of having hadn’t done it before had an outstanding rookie year and what a great one and done here in Vegas for him well I think his talent level says a lot about him but I also think his personality says a lot about him I learned a lot about Brandon Miller today and just watching him and interact with these young players and just his demean or his enthusiasm for it uh says a lot he’s got a incredibly great future we talked a lot about it during the game you could see why today and I know Charles Lee uh can’t wait to get an opportunity to see his growth because we talk about him as a future Allstar W mentioned that I don’t think there’s any question in my mind that’s where he’s going to be now in order to make that happen the team success has to come first before you start getting individual accolades like that but I think that’s where this is trending for Brandon Miller this is going to be one of the big- time scorers in this league in the next few years 23 points five three-pointers the eight rebounds Nick Smith Jr also just as important in this win this afternoon with 24 points as the Hornets keep the summer Vibes going three wins in the Bay Area one win here in Vegas they still got four games to go and uh you know tjon Salon as you mentioned as well the number six pick had a good second half yeah those vets brought out the best of him as the second half absolutely stay with us because uh coming up next we’ll get a look at the Detroit Pistons and the Philadelphia 76ers summer league Squad our first final Charlotte 94 the Knicks 90 summer league rolling on with the Pistons and the Sixers right after this timeout [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]
