Portland Trail Blazers Earn a Win in the Donovan Clingan’s Best Defense Performance of Summer League

Trailblazers your daily Portland Trailblazers podcast part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day what up world it’s your p first point guard and Trailblazers reporter Mike Richmond you at you each and every weekday Monday through Friday so make it a part of your daily routine make your first list and tell your friends to do the same it’s locked on Blazers your team every day in today’s show we’re talking Blazers third Summer League game they improved to 2-1 with an 8280 win over the Washington Wizards and I think this was Donovan kingan’s best defensive performance of the three games we’ve seen him in a Blazers uniform sort of a Blazers uniform not a Blazers NBA uniform but certainly a Blazers uniform undeniably a Blazers uniform want to talk about kingan uh why I think it was his best defensive game and kind of where he needs to go from here and what his role might look like in year one uh because there was another visitor in the building this uh this evening in in Vegas and I think uh it kind of speaks to the future of this franchise and the future of and the near-term future of Donovan kingan with the Trail Blazers and then I’ll close the show talk a little about Ryan ruper I think um he he played he played well and kind of I I you know he this wasn’t an excellent game from him but I think he kind of showed what he does and why and and his sort of path what his path to playing time could look like and then Bryce Macwan he continues to be a bucket in Vegas I think he is the truly perfect summer league case study we’ll talk about him to close the show let’s start with Clingan though um this week has been heavy on kingan the Blazers did this to themselves if they had sent scoot Henderson we would have talked a little about scoot Henderson but they didn’t want to send scoot Henderson so we’re getting a lot of Donovan kingan talk that’s how the show’s going to go so let’s go deep on clinging let’s do it I think this was the best defensive game of the SE of the the season of Summer League for him I think this was the best defensive game of Summer League for him um you know he didn’t have the box score numbers in his first game he blocked five shots right and and and and and tonight against against the Wizards he he he had another five but every five block performance isn’t created the same I think what he has he has kind of shown uh throughout his time in Vegas is just a a a a really solid understanding of what he is and what he is is he’s just really big he’s just he’s just a really big person and and I don’t mean that to like in in an insulting way or ironic way I mean like he’s really big and he uses his size really well and that matters I think young players understanding their strength is incredibly important and kingan has shown I think after kind of a rocky game one where he just kind of just like like he has leaned into what he does well on defense and there were there were two moments that kind of stick out to me as um that that are sort of emblematic to me of of of these games or of of this performance in this game before we get into those two moments though I would be remiss to not mention that Alex SAR threw up a freaking that’s the number two overall pick for the Washington Wizards Alex SAR went 0 of 15 0 of seven scoreless in 30 minutes Donovan kingan didn’t do that to him right alexar took a lot of Threes he kind of tried to shoot himself out of it um but it does speak to the fact that maybe if you think Clingan is struggling in offense and I’ll talk about more about that later in the show it’s like he ain’t the only defensive big guy that has had some issues trying to score and SAR certainly um looks like that SAR just he’s like a fluid athlete bailing the team out by by taking 73 seems bizarre to me but um part of it was kingan was just in the middle of the paint there wasn’t there wasn’t you know if you weren’t getting out in transition and running if you got into a halfcourt game with the Blazers Donovan clling was parked in the paint um did kingan did kingan hold SAR to o5 I think that would be overstating what he did I think kingan was a part of a brutal night for a headliner in this game certainly there was a play early in the second quarter where SAR caught it in the middle of the paint and thought he was going to get a little turnaround hook shot and Donovan King was right in his jersey right in his grill and it made that and made that little turnaround push hook hard because kingan was right there because he understands where to be he understands angles and he plays big um that was that was a nice moment but there was also just like some shots that SAR took where kingan wasn’t in the frame and he bricked him but I but I think this was kingan’s best game defensively just because he he he he shut things down paint and and and and I think in game two he started to show that it’s like oh he’s he’s been really good in the paint but uh particularly in this game it’s just like the um the Wizards couldn’t get stuff at The Rim when kingan was in the game he made it hard for him because he really really plays to what his his strengths are so here are the two moments that I think stick out to me as emblematic of an excellent defensive game from Young Donovan kingan one about about the 630 Mark of uh of the third quarter it’s about halfway through the third quarter start of the second half um the Wizards it’s kind of an empty gym it’s the last game of the night and it’s Wizards Blazers and and uh it’s kind and we’re on we’re now into Tuesday you’re listening to Wednesday uh July 17th show but this was Tuesday night in Vegas you know the the game started Friday it’s been a while you know the weekenders have gone home now it’s the true die hards and also like the noobs who show up to Vegas uh for the end of the for the second half of the week um shout out to the noobs shout out to the die hards but like because the gym is empty because it’s quiet and because it’s on national TV you can hear the Wizard’s uh uh summer league coach yell he’s not guarding anybody he doesn’t clear he doesn’t clear and what he’s complaining about when he’s yelling that you was like the 630 635 Mark of the third quarter if you want to go back and watch it if you Haven it recorded what he’s complaining about is that Don Van kingan was camped in the paint for the entire possession folks that’s cheating and you love to see it because that is what drop bigs do in the league they Park themselves in the paint and they’re they have the perfect art of two ning which is instead of a 3se second call you can clear right you play you get in the paint for 2.9 seconds and then you take a step out you get in the paint for 2.9 seconds then you touch somebody so you’re guarding somebody and then you get back in so you spend the entire possession in the paint by just two ning by just doing the magic Brook Lopez had a a few years ago had a great uh interview explain the art of 2 ning like it’s just a two that’s 2.9 seconds clinging understanding how to break the rules and just stand in the pain and effectively play zone defense and shut off the ri shut off the rim that’s beautiful stuff and you know how a dude is impacting a game such that the other team can’t get what they want to when their coaches whining about it he’s whining about off ball defense because you’re 72 280 with long arms and defensive presence and you’re parked in the paint the entire possession and they can’t get to the rim because when you’re in the middle of the lane you’re impossible to get around that moments me stck out because I stood out because I thought I thought he was I thought Clingan was really good in his discipline I I I thought he was really good to just like be big be in the middle stay low Corral ball hand alerts and really clean the glass I thought in game one he struggled a lot um just like making contact on on offensive rebounds I mentioned that it’s was like a put your hands up contest he’s been way better in in since those two games and I thought game three this was his best defensive rebounding game um you know I believe in game one without looking at the Box I believe in game one he had 133 rebounds and five blocks in game three he had 13 rebounds and five blocks and they could not be more different from me in terms of impact the box score ain’t doing it for me I I think this was just a straight up really good game for him um on defense because the offense is just not quite there yet it’s not he’s a bad offensive player right now there’s a lot of things that go into that I would like to share those things with you plus I’d like to share a thought on this tonight after many Blazers have been in the building all week including Shaden sharp and uh and Scoot Henderson Toni Kamar Jabari Walker Delano Banton Tani Kamar there the gang’s there Denny ABIA was there for that at the beginning of the week or beginning of the weekend um you know the young guys are hanging out they’re having fun uh they’re doing whatever you do if you’re just slightly below the legal drinking age in Vegas which is probably um break the law and some variety but um it is a new visitor joined the team on Tuesday evening DeAndre a and when I watched Don Van kingan I thought like yeah the Blazers are lucky to have DeAndre Aon that’s going to be useful for both the the basketball team and also for Donovan kingan let let’s talk about that to close the show because I I I do earnestly believe the presence of deand Drayton is not a hindrance but a true benefit to kingan because part of his game is just not quite ready yet join me in that second segment let’s talk about that won’t you first Blazers reporter shared an image as well on social media of of Da DeAndre Aiden in the building in beautiful Thom the beautiful Thomas and Max center right there on the campus of UNLV uh in in Las Vegas Nevada the BL have been lucky enough to play in the big gym baby they haven’t been in Cox Pavilion been they’ve been in the big gym playing playing at Thomas and Mack and who was in the big gym with him da Deion and Aon didn’t make the Olympics sadly came up just short and so he’s got a little he’s got he doesn’t have as much structure to his summer as he otherwise would have had he’ been 10 days away from playing the Olympics so he joined the team in Vegas what up and it made me think a couple things one it’s good to see da there I was I was um clocking that maybe some of the Blazers older vets hadn’t shown up in the gym it’s like what’s Jeremy Grant doing he’s probably in Paris getting fits off where’s amrey Simons he’s laying low cuz they keep they refused to mention his name name um like uh and but da is there it’s like all right good one of the one of the more veteran players DeAndre in the rip old age of 25 an old an old man on the Blazers current roster good to see him there and I it got me thinking like the Portland is lucky to have da because Don V clingan’s not ready for a big role he’s not he’s not um I think one of the keys for Donovan kingan once summer league wraps up is to get in incredible shape get in incredible shape show up into into training camp in in the best shape of your life it’s kind of a cliche this time of year but for kingan like it’s such a weird transition from like college to lottery pick where you kind of like have to take some time off and then you get into summer league and you haven’t played in a while and then you kind of like not only have you haven’t played in a while now it’s like new system new everything new terminology new coaches and then and then you just go away for a little bit go away it’s like um most young guys will maybe Circle back in the last week or last couple weeks of August but like he’s probably got a probably got a month before everybody’s back and then the veterans around around Labor Day is when veterans like really come into Camp um and that’s like when it really starts to be real at NBA like as NBA guys ramp up and then you and then preseason starts in October so you have like a but you have like a month some young guys are back in August some young guys are back late August but like Labor Day um so he’ll have somewhere between a month and six weeks off and that’s off from structured team stuff August is kind of a sacred vacation day for for sacred vacation month for uh for coaches and and Executives in the NBA um they work busy lives and this is that’s that’s their time to get away but for young guys like kingan you know he can take a vacation I hope he does but like this is the time to get in in like fantastic shape fantastic shape because he’s not quite there yet he’s not quite there cardiovascular wise he wasn’t a big minute guy in college I don’t expect him to be a big minute guy in the pros he’s playing 22 and a half minutes a game as a sophomore at Yukon he’s not going to morph into much more than that in the pros but if the what the Blazers really need kingan to be able to do is to give them 24 really good minutes of NBA basketball at the most at the most most likely it’s 18 you know like I I feel like 16 to 18 is probably a very reasonable role that’s cuz the Blazers are lucky to have DeAndre aen he’s going to play 30 to 32 minutes a night he’s your starter and he’s going to play um I don’t think there’s a question about that I don’t think there should be a question about that I think it is normal and good and I think the Blazers will benefit from having a player who is much better than Donovan Kling and the court to do those things I’m a little lukewarm on like if you’re every day or you know I’m a little lukewarm on on DeAndre Hayden I I don’t love his game uh it doesn’t speak to me um I don’t think he does the things I don’t think his game gives you he doesn’t have the skill set that like you’d want from a modern NBA Center he just doesn’t do the things you’d want he’s not an elite rim protector he’s not an elite playmaker he’s not an elite screen Setter um he doesn’t space the floor Beyond 177 ft he doesn’t you know he just he has some limitations but he’s a good offensive player he can score he’s going to get he can get you 20 and 10 um even with those limitations he’s productive and he’s so clearly the Blazer’s best center by like a a lot by like a ton and that’ll benefit Donovan kingan because he’s just he’s not ready for that physically he’s not ready for that and skill-wise he’s not ready for that his offensive game is a long way away a couple listeners have sent me the idea that that they see a little bit of use of nerkish I got this in the email lock on Blazers gmail.com couple a couple of you have sent me an email saying like kingan’s got a little nerk to his game the the size and the passing chops and the Mis layups yeah I see that too um it’s not exactly the same as nerk because I feel like sometimes Yousef nkuch would go up with little flip shots and I think kingan’s problem is that he goes up with two hands and I think you if you go up with two hands and not one like if you’re not you say okay I’m going to go up hard with my right hand and create space you’re just you play a little smaller a two-handed jump shot around the you play or like push shot around the room you play a little smaller than you could if you went up with one you go up with two you’re stronger you can protect a little better like um probably my youth coaches out there saying go up with two hands go up strong and I hear you but when you’re as big as him like creating a little bit of space and um it could be could be valuable just like be be bigger use your right hand you can hold the ball like a freaking grapefruit um that’s his problem I think that he doesn’t have great you know he just doesn’t have great touch outside of 8 feet so he’s really it’s really like scoring around the rim he hasn’t shown much touch period in the summer league although he did hit a three he did hit a three um he he finally he made one he didn’t want to shoot it then he did want to shoot it pump fake pump fake okay I’m going to shoot it and kind of line drived it right over the Rim made his first three of summer league but some of it is just like go up with um you know go up with a little more confidence and not protect the ball so much the other thing is like seal a little bit better he’s got to get a little stronger cuz sometimes he’ll have post seal and he just isn’t strong enough to hold the guy off he had won a kesan George where he just could George ended up fouling him but if he had just been able to really seal him and put kesan in in jail right put put George in jail and say like you’re you’re stuck on my hip buddy I weigh 280 pounds you’re not going anywhere like when I lean on you what are you going to do um and kingan will get there and get stronger but he needs to get there he does the things he has the skill sets the skill set excuse me and the skills that you that I absolutely would want I would make it a lab for the perfect modern Center he doesn’t shoot so may not perfect modern Center that might have been overstating it but a modern Center he’s a he’s a really understands defense and he wants to play it and he’s a very good rim protector for a young player he’s not he might not be very good in the pros right away but I think he has the tools to be very good at some point in the near future he can rebound he’s when he wants to he does set physical screens and he can really pass and play out of the high post so it mitigates some of his shooting issues because he can be a playmaker his skill set is not the same as DeAndre Aiden’s he’s hopefully he learns some stuff from DeAndre Aiden but he’s not exactly they’re not exactly a guy you’re going to model your game after but da eating up minutes and being productive and not having throwing Donovan kingan into the sort of um Into the Fire into a bad role for him I think is going to be incredibly valuable I mentioned another scene from game three of the Blazers summer league experience under 50 seconds left bub Carrington who’s been he’s great in this game U taken 14th overall to pick the Blazers Trad to the Wizards for Denny AIA out of Pittsburgh he’s he’s one of the youngest players in the draft and he’s like a comboy guard and I I’ve watched now two full Wizards games in summer league um I watched their first game against the Hawks as well and Carrington was really good in that one too and he was good in this one um maybe didn’t have the best box score but I thought he was really good in this game um and and kingan jumped out on a on a on a try a step back attempt off of like a long rebound from Carrington and blocked a three-pointer clingan’s got the stuff on on defense twice now in the last two games he’s blocked a jump shot in the with under a minute left in a in a close game the the Wizards were down two possessions at the time but it was still like a singled digigit game with their best player shooting a three-pointer and Cay confidently moved out and blocked a jump shot he’s got the tools to be special he’s not ready for it quite yet but those two scenes a dude who understands how to break the rules and has a coach complaining and a guy blocking jump shots and crunch time that’s exactly what you want when you when when I think of what I want out of a center it’s making those type of Defense being that type of defensive anchor I can’t imagine a world where um you’d like I just I think the best the best value that a center can give in the modern NBA is being elite elite protecting the rim the other stuff is gravy and useful and there’s like obviously like yic and embiid kind of like skew the whole plan but the best thing a center can do is protect the rim that that is the that is the their best value unless Nicol yic and like one of the best offensive players we’ve ever seen play the game that’s a different thing kingan’s got it and I think good for him because he’s not quite he’s got the stuff on defense he he whether he puts it together and what that looks like and how long it takes is another question that will answer in the fall but he he has the juice to be a good defensive player he has want to feel understanding timing uh he has all of it but I’m so so if you’re just thinking about his development I’m so thankful they don’t have to throw him into the Wolves I’m I’m like watching scoot Henderson where he he needed to play it was the right thing to do to throw him out there and say you need to play 35 minutes a night because you just he he looked like he was going to be more polished and more ready and and like point guards need need the ball to make it happen so if he’s going to play you need to give him the ball and Let It Go Clingan is not that and he’s just not ready for for it either in the way that scoot wasn’t ready for it either and eventually had to change his role and I think that was better for scoot in the end was changing his role I was wrong about about screaming for him to play more minutes kingan I think I maybe I’ve learned my lesson a little bit he’s probably only going to have a chance to play 16 18 20 minutes a night and that’s perfect for him because he if you gave him more he would struggle and maybe that would um not lead to the best sort of environment for him to grow in DeAndre Aton gives Donan kinging a chance to have a good environment to grow in and then the you know maybe as soon as the trade deadline but certainly next summer the Blazers will have to look themselves in the mirror and decide what they want to do about that two Center conundrum maybe they’ll play together a little bit but I think for the most part da will play in the bulk of the center minutes and Donovan kingan will fill in behind and hopefully kingan grows and then we gets a little more we get to a point where it matters who plays and who doesn’t as opposed to this sort of part where it is now where there’s clearly the best center in the on the Blazers was in the gym and he was wearing a fun shirt and a big old gold chain and not playing basketball Don vingan ain’t there yet and when he is there we will address it but for now it’s clear that he isn’t and the Blazers are lucky to have someone in front of him to keep it simple okay let’s talk Ryan ruper and Bryce mcgow to close the show uh join me in that third segment won’t [Music] you still a pass first point guard I’m still Mike Richmond you are still listening to locked on Blazers okay I want to talk real quick about uh two Blazers wings that I think play played well against the Wizards cuz we went deep on clinging 20 minutes on clinging as promised um I don’t think Ryan ruper has a chance to be part of the day one rotation I just don’t think there’s right now with the way the roster Works he’s he’s deep deep deep deep deep deep on buried in the depth chart I don’t I don’t think he’s going to be a day one contributor I think that’s pretty obvious anyone who plays plays close attention to the team could also draw those same conclusions he’s raw still like he he his halfcourt game is not great although it is improved his handle is improving his strength is improving his decision making is improving but it’s still not quite there yet um I think on defense he has the tools he hasn’t sort of dialed in those tools but when he is when he has the moments when those tools flash it’s like that dude can go but watching this game I thought about where ruper looks best and I think he looks best doing two things one his his form shooting threes looks fine looks fine and he can shoot stand still threes you can’t always you know bake in getting good clean open I get to shoot it with great form threes into every into every NBA possession that’s a skill that he’ll need and he can move forward with that and he shot okay his his rookie season like way better than I expected him to and I think um that is Meaningful but watching this game tonight where ruper is the best and watching him watching him in over the summer league so far is at full speed when he gets to play in this sort of up and down uh little more open little more loose style of Summer League his lack of like tight handle to get himself space and his like ability his sometimes tendency to get knocked off balance and not get to into good shots around the rim in half court settings he just he moves he moves quickly he’s fast and he’s long and when they play at full speed like that length and that speed really show up for ruper and he looks really good the Blazers promised to play Fast last year and then they were one of the slowest teams in the league for D near the whole season their Pace never caught up with their rhetoric about said Pace I don’t know if they’re going to run more this season I think they’re going to look different um I think the changes in the coaching staff particularly the the with the two uh two new veteran assistants uh and Chris Fleming and Nate borran I think the Blazers will look a little bit different offense and I hope part of that is a is a commitment and a plan to run run run run run and and you don’t need to run like towards the rim but to get into stuff play with pace and get into like get into stuff quicker get into you know early offense every second with a team that can’t shoot is going to hurt you on in the half court like get into stuff quickly um like you’re just you’re just going to have to run a bunch of quick hitting stuff because the slower you are the you know the slower you get into stuff the more teams can get into their shell and they can defend and then you get caught one-on-one and then you are taking hard shots go go go go go go go go go go go go go if the Blazers end up playing fast that’s going to be where ruper shines because I don’t think he’s you know I think we’re talking like 25 30 games into the season injuries trades whatever it might be um and it’s like oh hey Ryan repair’s got to play tonight because you know somebody’s sick somebody twisted their ankle whatever like it just like things it’s the NBA things happen right um they play four times a week for six months so like it’s when he does get his opportunity if they are a team that plays fast I think ruper has shown that he can that is where he can be his best in the half court he can do one thing that’s shoot that’s a great one thing to be able to do and if that continues in his in his second season and he continues to improve as a shooter it’s like keep it simple in the half court don’t don’t do don’t you know don’t do more than you’re capable of and if they if Blazers play Fast use your strengths play fast because I think that’s where he’s looked Best In Summer League I thought he was good to good against the Wizards in in transition um he’s you know he’s he’s he’s on the outside looking in when the season starts but he’s an interesting one last thing I want to talk about real quick Bryce McGaw dude goes man he he took let me look at the box score I’ll give you some box score stuff for you he came off the bench and in 19 minutes took 11 free throws he goes he just he’s the perfect summer league player he can’t shoot he’s like a non-shooter but he’s 66 and has is Shifty enough that he can get himself into the paint he’s athletic enough that when he gets into the paint he can finish through contact or or he had a couple big dunks in this game driving like he’s he’s the perfect summer league player he’s he’s like he’s wideopen game a whole bunch of one-on-one stuff not really ATT tuned team defense um you know kind of a green light to go go go go go and the ability to just attack when you want to because no one’s going to stop you because that’s what Bryce McGaw is in the game to do when he plays if he plays in NBA minutes he’s not going to have that role right they’re not going to give Bryce mcgow the The Rock and say you’re allowed to slash take 11 field goals and 11 free throws you get 22 shooting possessions right like he’s going to be a guy who has to pick a spots shoot a little bit because like off ball guys got to shoot in the NBA that’s how it works uh and like shoot you know if you can make jumpers and if not like slash and attack I you know I mentioned after the second game and it’s like yeah I kind of understand like I think he’s a worthy two-way flyer and I feel the same way after game three but I also feel this and I feel it pretty earnestly it’s like you couldn’t craft a player like Fearless tunnel vision to the rim athleticism and size to do what he wants to do you couldn’t craft a player to have like a to have a have a better summer league type of game like he’s the perfect he’s the perfect uh you know creating a lab summer league guy it’s like can’t shoot don’t worry no one else out here can either but can are you Relentless attacking the rim and you’re big enough and athletic enough to do it tight tight you’re going to get 11 free throws he really got n nine and then they had an intentional foul um he had he had nine and then at the very end of the game and I’ll this is like perfect Blazers you know they’re up six they give up a three they you know have to it’s okay three-point game they they give up an uh you know hit a free throw give up another bucket okay now it’s a two-point game just need to get the ball in bounce you know gave up a gave up a late three just need to get the ball in bounce with like 2.7 seconds left after a Wizards three and you’re going to and you’re going to win the game uh you have a timeout left they don’t take the time out Bry mwan kind of starts running up the sideline like he’s going to you know oh throw it over the top oh just kidding I need to come back to the ball he comes back to the ball so does Bob Carrington steals the ball puts it up from 8 feet and or maybe like 12 feet on the base on the left Baseline just long at the buzzer would have forced over time w w it’s just like perfect like oh this is a sloppy version of basketball um little ragged out there and you know who thrives when it was ragged Bryce McGowan’s um he’s he’s perfect he’s perfect for zmer league and he looked good in it he looked good um tonight against the Wizards he had some big games with the Hornets right before they cut him like he’s he’s a man a man perfectly suited to play NBA basketball exhibition games in July um you know there’s no he’s no harm having on tway we’ll see what he’s like and if he gets opportunities and if he if he plays some games in the remix what he how how good he can be at the g-league level I think it’ll be interesting for him uh I just like watching him I’m like yeah that’s a summer league dude that’s a perfect summer league dude Bryce mcgall you know what he is he’s a summer league dude and you know what he looked like tonight when he had 19 points zero rebounds and zero assists a summer league dude he really really did okay that’s going to do it for today’s show come back for tomorrow’s show oh two things one tomorrow’s show I want to talk about Chon bills was on a podcast uh with Rasheed Wallace this week he joined rashed Sheed and Tyler’s podcast Sheed show um he had some interesting comments about veteran presences and Malcolm brog and I want to share that with you in tomorrow show plus I’m going to be on the bleacher report app noon Pacific time so download Bleacher Report app and look for my stream I’ll have a stream um talking Blazer summer league and and if you get in there you can ask me questions a little live chat and we’ll we’ll chat it 1. PDX did Clingan no favor by having terrible Point guards on this team. Clingan is wide open in the Sweet spot about 5 feet away from the rim all game and nobody passes him the Ball. Clingan offense would look much better with Scoot getting him the ball so he can score around the rim.
