here to do that with our pal Katie hindle who was just about to head off to Vegas yes we’re recording this podcast in the past because I’m on vacation during this week as well and so we’re all just getting some stuff in the can uh Katie are you excited for Vegas and will you be still holding up all right in the heat when this podcast airs a week from now I don’t know that’s gonna be a long time with with still a long time in front of me so yeah how many days are you going for again almost two weeks oh my that is like an eternity in yeah I’m excited I’m excited I I’ve I I’ve had a lot to get through like to to get to this point and it still kind of weirdly feels far away though I am leaving this afternoon but it’s always I can’t wait to be scoured and scorched clean by the desert I’ve already got a lot of warnings from friends it’s so hot I’m like you guys don’t understand I love it yeah nice thing about Vegas you could most be inside if you really want to be sweet air conditioning and cigarette smoke it’s a lizard mode for me oh man well uh godspeed to you Katie really hoping that you don’t uh you know join the lizards in the desert and you come back to us all in one piece uh but yeah let’s uh dive in Katie to some mailbag questions speaking of Vegas as we record this on Wednesday July the 11th we are coming off of the first exhibition game in the leadup to the Olympics team Canada USA Canada Falls 8672 in Vegas and we have a listener question regarding team Canada I want to get to that in a sec but first Katie uh you know General level of excitement for the Olympics I am getting myself very much into it I’m also preparing myself for all kinds of heartbreak and I’m uh you know looking at the Canada depth chart and getting very worried about the big men I don’t think those worries have been calmed by the first exhibition game but uh overall how you feeling about Canada going into the Olympics it’s a very exciting time for international Hoops I feel good I feel like the the the Sham team of the United States of America um just gotta watch their backs I just still think it’s so funny that Canada showing up so hard at FBA made every American Superstar decide suddenly to actually join the Olympic team anyway no I’m stoked I think Canada will improve it was a close loss I didn’t watch the whole game uh but it was a you know they still look good and you know I also love the Olympics for not a lot more not basketball Sports we got swimming high diving gonna watch some what else do I like Pro jumping no show jumping that’s my time so yeah I’m a summer I’m a summer olympics head for sure yeah I I love especially with the time zone it’s going to be on uh like just waking up 6:00 a.m. throwing on a 3our recycling race and getting really invested oh it’s just the very very best yeah I’m I’m quite looking forward to it all um all right let’s dive in Katie we got a big Team Canada question this might take us more than the next four minutes before we got to go to break so we’ll set it up and then we’ll come back on the other side and really dig into it but a question came in from Duncan in the lockdown Raptors Discord and the question is if Team Canada was the Toronto Raptors would the salary work based on player salaries and how good would they be Katie because I’m a good podcast host who likes prep I went and put together the team Canada salary cap sheet and you’d actually be kind of surprised it’s basically a pretty normal NBA cap sheet when it’s all said and done um you know I was a little bit worried we were going to be wildly over the the the first apron the second apron of course those things that everyone really cares about and has to think about all the time uh but no Team Canada comes in slightly under the first apron just barely into the luxury tax and so let’s just kind of get into the breakdown here Katie Shay gildas Alexander Jamal Murray each make about 36 mil so that’s a big chunk of the cap gone there about 72 million you got RJ Barrett Dylan Brooks at 25.8 and 22.2 the next highest paid players on the team following that Lou Dort 16 and a half I don’t know he looks like a salary dump waiting to happen Katie you gota clean up them books you’ve got Kelly o lck at 12.8 Trey Lyles at eight and then you’ve got nikil Alexander Walker 4.3 Dwight Powell four uh Andrew nard 2.0 and then I just did like the six-year veterans minimum for Kem bur at 2.6 and the rookie veterans minimum for a guy who’s not played in the NBA before belet edum at 1.2 million it gets you to 171.5 million uh 500k over the tax for this coming season uh 7 million or so under the first apron so plenty of room to go and add a couple of more minimum signings to fill out the roster from 12 12 to 15 and stay under that first apron which is again the thing we all really care about as fans um Katie uh what do you think of the way Team Canada has gone about building this very clean cap sheet uh where they make or they have about as much money committed next season to players as the Atlanta Hawks uh before we get into the quality of the team I suppose would this team be better than the Atlanta Hawks yes they would be um correct answer yeah they they the correct answer I I mean we talked about this before started recording but I think Team Canada like the some of the appeal to me is they’re just a very regular basketball team you know it isn’t just like cool we got all our juggernauts together some of that is just who’s available and who wants to play and you know who’s out there for Canada but I actually think that’s a pretty cool thing um that this could translate so directly in this fictional exercise to an NBA team yeah you’ve got your your well-built your pragmatic front office building this sensible team that makes sense under the salary cap meanwhile is Matt ishia the owner of Team USA or something they’re just like wildly over the taxs very irresponsible can’t make trades first round picks Frozen uh not to mention the disease of more of having all those Superstars playing together yeah they’re screwed good luck you know congrats on your exhibition win USA you’re toast when the games get real uh when we get to Paris in a few weeks time Katie we’re gonna come back on the other side and examine just how good this team would be within the context of the NBA at large we got some more mailbag questions to get to as well we will do all that coming up in just one second Today’s Show is brought to you by friends over at game time the single best place to buy questions it’s all very fun stuff just a reminder you can go make your second listen of the day locked on Leafs the buds did some stuff in the offseason I’m not super happy about a lot of it but other seem people seem to like it so you can go listen to lockon LEF says mike and Dave every single day breaking out all of the offseason moving and shaking for your very disappointing perennial uh you know the team England of the NHL Toronto Maple Leaves go check him out over wherever you get your podcasts it’s all free on YouTube and the audio side of things all right Katie let’s get into the uh sort of the meat of this question about Team Canada and where they would stack up in the NBA if you just replace the Toronto Raptors roster assume you keep Kelly oen and RJ Barrett and you’re shipping everybody else out to lineup Team Canada uh with a 12-man roster I guess we got to find three more dudes to toss in there but you know we can worry about that Zach Ed he’s on a cheap rookie deal you could probably oh you probably can’t because he’s a high first round pick never mind we got to get some sign some other minimums anyway uh with this roster Katie uh where do you think they would Stack Up in say let’s just say the Eastern Conference going into next season um obviously you’ve got the super duper high-end Talent of Shay gildas Alexander a perennial MVP candidate that’s going to give you you would think a pretty decent floor you’ve got tons of wing depth you probably have the best guard rotation in basketball between Shay Jamal Murray Andrew nard and nil Alexander Walker um you got the wing defense and Dylan Brooks and then there’s the bigs which we can talk about but uh where you at what would you sort of Peg as like the the win total for this team where would they finish in the Eastern Conference and uh what other teams would be their sort of contemporaries do you think I think they’d actually do pretty well in our contemporary Eastern Conference as it stands going into next season given how much you know teams like the Milwaukee Bucks still need to Jael you know um and the familiarity that this team has with one another uh because well some of this roster is new as a FBA a lot of them are perennial you know Team Canada they they’ve made up the team Canada roster for quite a while now um so I think that they’d have that going for them um [Music] um I think it’s so funny to do this to be like to take it quite seriously so I’m like the next would be a tough matchup but they would I actually think they would fare pretty well against the Celtics considering they were without porzingis you know in the if we’re just talking about kind of like big band on big band sort of matchups um and if you’re worried that team Canada as I sense you are doesn’t necessarily have the greatest uh depth or ability in that position um I think they would do pretty well like there’s obviously a lot of quickness here a lot of good switching like a lot of shot creation um and creativity uh and they’re pretty fluid I don’t know just corny to be like they’re a gritty team but I I really think they are yeah yeah I I think within the Eastern Conference they would actually Fair quite well I think so too it it’s they almost would play I think kind of like if they were the OKC Thunder without Chad holgren right like they you know you don’t have Jaylen Williams but you have other big wings and Jamal Murray kind of fills in the talent uh Gap that you would have between Jaylen Williams and some of the other wings that that team Canada has uh the shot creation would be incredible I feel like this would be probably a pretty close to top five offense in the NBA between Shay and Murray and all the shooting and you know even The Bigs right like we can talk about the bigs on defense but Kelly oinc bomb threes Trey ly has shot 38% from three the last few seasons I feel like they could play sort of five out ball and be very modern in the way they do it um you know looking through the matchups the Celtics maybe you give the Celtics the slight Edge just because they’re the defending Champions but whatever um the Knicks I actually think that without Isaiah hartenstein the the Knicks versus Team Canada low key like incredible matchup I would love to see that you got Shay Jaylen Brunson the Nicks did that but what sorry another podcast another time yeah sure you got the wing defense of OG and maau bridges but uh you know just the the preponderance of guard creation on this team Canada team they given buckets to that Nick team I think um the Bucks old done it’s basically like what’s going to happen when they play Greece in the Olympics which hopefully they can take him down um the Cavs that’s interesting The Bigs could pose a problem uh match up wise Jared Allen Evan Mobley no not even your boy Jared Allen I know I know I mean based on what we saw this season I know Jared was quite hurt but I just think you’ve got a lot of smaller quicker guys and they kind of I I feel like this team would be able to jam up kind of a a size heavy team even a team like the Timberwolves yeah uh the magic I think fall right into that category they’re get they’re toast Dylan Brooks locking up Palo bonero and they have no one else who can create a shot for to save their lives not fast enough to stay in front of all the quick slippery guards on Team Canada um yeah I think we’re looking at maybe home court in the Eastern Conference maybe that would be different in the Western Conference maybe we’re looking at a playin team out west but um you know the Sixers would be tough not that convinced by that many teams in the west either interesting interesting yeah I mean there’s like the four and then maybe you’re right maybe the West is lowkey bad it’s like yeah it’s look I’ll be honest I feel like it’s lowkey bad every year yeah are the Spurs going to be like the five seed next year probably yeah yeah yeah maybe I’ll put maybe I’ll like make that declaration right now Spurs five seat in the west oh the Grizzlies are there too they’re maybe healthy this would be the wild podcast to do it just as this a fantasy pod so might as well I feel like we well all right so let’s just say you know Canada they’re they’re the Raptors they play out the full season uh do they make the finals do they win the NBA championship I feel like without a better like starting big man they probably not wi in the championship but you know it’s the era of parody Katie uh what’s the final finish uh both in the playoffs and of course the NBA in season tournament for this team Canada roster I think they wouldn’t really you know worry too much about the inseason tournament um also given you know I I feel like it takes a little while for Jamal Murray to warm up I feel like you know it’s not his fault that he played so many years for the nuggets before coming to the team Canada Toronto Raptors um but the nuggets are a slow locomotive to get going at times so I think he still got that DNA in him unfortunately um I think Eastern Conference Finals feels apt we still feel like things would have to fall pretty correct this team’s way and of course like everybody’s got to stay healthy finals like though this is Pure Fantasy I’m still reticent to be like oh yeah they’re going to win got to have some realism to the fantasy K it all relatable got keep ourselves grounded exactly uh yeah I I think you know it depends do they avoid the Sixers in the first two rounds I think they can survive that way maybe the only person in NBA media who doesn’t really think Paul George makes that much of a difference I love this please go off this is great the off season we don’t have to talk about the thing we were G to talk about please wax poetic I don’t I mean yeah I get it he’s he’s a different type of athlete than um Tobias Harris who they lost though I don’t think that the trade was ever supposed to be it’s not it’s not like a clear substitution you know it wasn’t just like this guy for this guy I think embiid needs to play alongside somebody who can be a bit of a leader and I think Paul George is not that you know for all of his skill and Talent on the floor he’s never really had to be that I think he’s always had stronger kind of number one guys beside him and like I like him but we’ve also seen him kind of rotate through this cast of would be like co-pilots or almost like leaders to take some of the Limelight off of him because he could be so Mercurial um and I think Paul George is an incredibly affable nice guy but I do think MB doesn’t need that sometimes he needs a sometimes he needs a bossy person like he needs Jimmy Butler if you will he needs it honestly yeah he needs a Jimmy Butler he needs someone like I was gonna say Kyle Lowry but at this point in time Jimmy Butler’s more would they never should have got rid of him but yeah I don’t the shooting will be fine it’ll be good but I I don’t think this really solves a lot of their existential problems how’s that yeah I I love it and I’m always here for Sixers skepticism and I do feel like we’ve seen this movie before of the Sixers won the off season and then the you know total lack of regard for role players or team chemistry Maxi and Paul George are GNA be so much fun I can’t wait to watch teres Maxi take another huge jump but maybe Maxi’s the bossy guy maybe maybe it’s Maxi te he’s too sweet I guess you could kill him with kindness maybe but um I just I’m very I’m I’m watching how’s that all right so the Sixers lose to Team Canada determin this uh you know embiid despite just like totally stonewalled by Kem Burch and Dwight Powell and uh it’s it’s glorious to behold uh this is an offseason podcast we’re going to come back on side and round it out with a few more mailbag questions as we have determined that team Canada would be extremely good in the NBA with maybe a little bit of roster flaw to overcome uh I guess before we get to the break uh Jordy Fernandez would be the coach of the Nets and so who coaches Team Canada he’s just leaving the Nets yeah prob if everybody has to leave their team why do the coach you make a pretty compelling point we’re gonna come back on the other and round it out uh with a handful of mailbag questions including Jamal shed Kyle Larry 2.0 yeah basically come on back at it here rounding it out with Katie hindle as we have a few more mailbag questions to get to uh just a reminder I I promoted lock on Leafs earlier go check out lockon Blue Jays It’s a Wonderful show as well covering everyone’s favorite miserable losers that are the Toronto Blue Jays but if you’re looking for friends to help you cope with how miserable this season has in fact been lock on Blue Jays are the friends for you go check it out wherever you get your podcast all right few more mailbag questions here ktie we’ll rattle through them as much as we can uh we’ll get to the Jamal shed Kyle Lowry one in a second but I want to keep it on the Canadian content for a moment as Big Mike asks all these Raptors rumors and one that’s been kind of pushed under the rug is Chris bue do you think he’ll be traded by the deadline and if so is he desirable to other teams or kept around as another vet um Katie I think Chris buet is an interesting guy to talk about because he had like that fleeting moment before he got hurt in the back part of the Season where it looked like oh there might be something here with that Kelly oin Chris bue front Court um you know that there’s clearly a need for a guy of his size he offensive rebounds like a maniac which is a thing darkar rakovich has spoken a lot about valuing um I I don’t know if I’m closing the book on Chris bue being a rotation player on the Raptors just yet it’s a shame he just missed out on making the team Canada Raptors um and he’s not part of that equation but you know when it comes to the actual Toronto Raptors in reality we’re bringing it back to reality now um where do you think Chris bu fits in how do you feel about the way it’s kind of been handled with him over the last six months it feels like it’s been a little bit messy a little bit um like the Raptors themselves are expressing buyer’s remorse for giving him the three-year contract that you know they didn’t have to give him but they did and so um they’re they’re living with that now where are you at with expectations hopes dreams for Chris buet going into next season I don’t I I certainly don’t want this to turn into like kind of a JV 2.0 where I feel like with Valen chunis they kind of treated him as they can they kicked down the road you know whether it was through free agency or um of seasons and I I don’t know I that always sort of sat wrong with me because to me it’s kind of I I get you you don’t and especially the Raptors they can be reticent to make some decisions but I think out of respect for someone who’s been with your franchise for so long and has played you know up through 905 to your parent team and has been part of like your championship and so many iterations at this point like you can’t just treat him as someone who you’re going to maybe dangle in front of a team I know that this is how teams work but still I feel he deserves more and you know to your point I think he does have a value certainly if they were to trade him to another team I can think of you know a few younger teams that could do really well with the Chris buet coming off the bench or just around in a locker room I think that would also do well for Chris bue sometimes it’s good for players to get out of the ecosystems you know they’re used to that they’ve maybe gotten just as far as they can in sure um all that said I think there’s value to hanging on to him um you know he did play well this past season before he got injured I’m always here for the Chris Buche frenetic flourishes that he can bring to games he’s a really interesting destabilizing Force I think he’s also learned to sort of Master those bursts he wasn’t always able to do that they would just kind of come out of left field and you were like Chris what are you doing it would be great for gameplay and honestly like turning the energy of a game around but it didn’t necessarily come when the team needed it or you want what I’m doing is dropping 38 on the in a March game that doesn’t matter let me cook I mean I’m talking quarter by quarter but yeah exactly also it could go like game to game you know and I think he’s learned to put a like a valve on that for you know for all intents and purposes so I don’t know like this isn’t to me just a a thing of like wanting to hang on to guys that have had such a big part of the DNA of the franchise I just I think with the makeup of the team now if we’re getting behind Scotty Barnes in a manual quickly which the most recent Raptor pressor would really show there is room for somebody like Chris bue yeah I’m with you I you know I’m sure they’ll look around and if they can turn them into a couple second round picks at the deadline from a contender or something then I’m sure they’ll make that move yeah it’s it is cold yeah but that’s how these things go when you’re an expiring guy going into the into the last year of your deal but yeah I I don’t think there’s I I think there’s this sort of belief that he can’t fit into a darkar rakovich team and look I don’t think he’s the most darkar rakovich system friendly player in the world but he does do things that the Raptors need he has some supplementary Rim protection he obviously is one of just sort of the more spr spry and lengthy players on the team and while he might not be a regular rotation fixture there are going to be moments over the course of 82 games where Chris bu’s exact brand of hoop is what you need and so yeah I it’s a shame he got hurt when he did because I think he was actually kind of making a case for hey like this is why I should be in the rotation plans next year and why I can be a valuable fixture to this for this team um we’ll see you know it’s very possible that he is you know excised from rotation is like the fourth power forward on the depth chart on a team that only has shooting guards and power forwards um and so maybe there’s just not minutes for him but I I feel like there’s got to be minutes for him even if it’s like you you know small backup five minutes I don’t think Jonathan mobo is going to be the full-time backup center on this team he has to be the full-time starting Wing maybe so it’s uh there they’re going to have to disperse the the very few tall players they have around the lineup a little bit and I think bue is going to have a moment or two this season that sort of reminds people oh yeah Chris buet he’s still around and he’s still a guy who can do some stuff for you that is uh you know effective and it affects winning in positive way um let’s get to another question here from insomnia man and let’s just get uh running away with our wildest Ambitions he asks is there any reason why Jamal shed can’t become Kyle Lowry 2.0 if he learns to shoot more Katie what’s stopping Jamal Shed from being one of the hundred best players of all time in a basically Surefire Hall of Famer no one can be the a Kyle ay 2.0 in my mind I’m sorry he could be a perfectly great athlete he can come into his own skill set and you know like unlock new abilities who never thought possible you know become a very unique element of the Raptors let’s just say that but man I don’t know yeah look I get so weirdly like Cy with questions like this even though I understand it’s it’s there’s I don’t want to say it’s pure fantasy because I don’t know the their intent the askers intentions sure but I can’t I can’t do it no look um Kyle Larry is a a one ofone player in Raptor history arguably a oneon-one player in NBA history as far as the development Arc and uh the the level at which he kind of drove winning even while maybe not getting all of the credit and plotts that come with driving winning the way he did he is one of I don’t know the 10 to 15 most important players of the 210s in the NBA you can’t tell the story of the NBA in that decade the decade of LeBron inste curry without Kyle Lowry showing up a whole bunch in those pages and so yeah there’s very little chance that Jamal shed becomes Kyle Lowry 2.0 because there’s very little chance that anybody becomes Kyle Lowry 2.0 I will say if there was somebody who had the the juice to become a Kyle Lowry like player Jamal shed is the type of guy you’d probably look at he is a little things King he is an excellent excellent Defender who plays bigger than his 6′ one stat he has a finger on the pulse he’s like an on court organizer and leader um you know that’s all the stuff Kyle lry absolutely mastered will Jamal shed ever Master those things to the degree that Kyle Lowry does probably not and you know that that’s just the reality of you know not everybody can be one of the best players in a or the best player in a franchise history only one can be and so yeah I would bet heavily heavily against this although if you were picking anyone on the Toronto Raptors to beti Larry maybe Jamal shed is that guy just based on the profile and makeup um I will talk myself back into it because also that’s what I saw in Desmond Bane and I think that’s why I’m still like I’m still like the Raptor should have Dred him because he reminded me so much of Kyle lry so I understand the DNA of this question and I do like it because I do love that kind of basketball player honestly Katie I’ve been thinking about this a little bit I was kind of hoping someone would ask this as a mailbag question maybe I’ll just throw it out there yeah Sean it’s your podcast it is my podcast I can just make mailbag all right final mailbag question it comes from Sean Woodle in the Discord he has this dumb King cake baby Avi um Avy Avi Avy I like that you went full Acron name yeah but I don’t know yeah jpeg uh a GF no um the uh the question I have is what is your favorite archetype of player Katie what’s your favorite just like kind of basketball player because I I think about this probably more than anybody should and my answer changes based on my mood but I feel like people who listen to this podcast probably know where I would lean you know in terms of a few categories of guy but what’s your favorite kind of guy it is like a Kyle Lowry on that end of the the size Spectrum for sure um like a small very tenacious guard very bossy good Court Vision in terms of like almost sear like being able to see moves like four or five ahead of everybody else uh be in a past getting visible reactions out of your opponents I really like that I love the ability of any athletes ability to kind of get under their opponent’s skin and I would say on the other end of the spectrum it’s probably a bam atab bio style um stretch big player like like offensive Hub big man type yeah but like very intelligent I think on the floor with the capability to to do a lot more and to take on more responsibility super athletic really bouncy obviously very flashy you know I love a dunk so I think the ability to do that is pretty sweet um yeah so I guess I’ve got two types I I guess I don’t you know if I was building a team I would just forget all about the wing players at all yeah yeah I’m with you there uh you know you need to have like one sort of highflying shooting guard type that’s sort of like you know that’s my Terren Ross uh Affliction I forget them too that’s a yeah that’s not generally not my favorite kind of player but if he dunks real good then he’s in my good graces uh yeah the sort of cerebral table setting on floor General type point guards always love them Kyle Lowry Chris Paul two of my all-time favorites uh I love a a big man who throws cool passes that’s really really high up bam out of Bio is a great example Marcus Saul one of my all-time favorites for that very reason I sure love Nicole yic a whole lot and I I think I just I really like like a playmaking four type Guy this is why I love Pascal SE AUM um you know all of the Draymond greenness about Draymond Green aside I love the basketball player Draymond Green about as much as I’ve ever loved a basketball player um you know playmaking four who can kind of you know affect the game from all kinds of different angles it’s kind of the the dream for Scotty Barnes a little bit and why uh I quite like watching him play too but yeah that’s uh I think a pretty good place to leave this one off Katie we just did a middle of July podcast yeah we did and I have one more shout out on a shout out uh Avid listener Jonathan goes to my gym came up to me and said Sean he listens so much this is like a religious experience for him and I was like you have the patience of a saint to listen to Shawn every day but seriously he’s like one of uh your biggest fans one Shadow Jonathan thank you very much for for listening um I don’t go to the gym so you won’t find me at the gym uh maybe at a pickup run you’re you but yeah Jonathan you’re the best thank you so much that’s very very kind uh and uh I’m sorry for all of the hours you’ve had to endure listening to this voice uh Katie anything you want to promote for the good people out there no just um put your prayers up for me in the desert yes uh yeah I want to promote hydration for Katie this is what what I’m promoting everyone go and uh send Katie money for water it cost like $14 on the Strip so uh we got to make sure Katie’s drinking them fluids all right we will leave it there and we’ll be back again on Thursday with a episode from the past again most likely I’m still sorting out In Episode 1677, Sean Woodley is joined by Katie Heindl for a Toronto Raptors mailbag featuring questions about the Canadian men’s national team, Chris Boucher’s place within the Raptors and new second-round draft pick Jamal Shead. The bulk of the show is spent entertaining an excellent question from one listener about how well the Raptors would stack up if you replaced their roster with the Team Canada Olympic roster. Of course, because this is Adam Silver’s NBA, we first need to determine whether or not the books would be salary cap compliant. Once that’s out of the way, Sean and Katie are free to debate and discuss how a roster led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jamal Murray in the back court, with a ton of guard and wing depth and some notable front court concerns would fare in the Eastern Confernce. Is Team Canada getting home court in the playoffs? Lastly, Sean and Katie answer a couple questions about Chris Boucher and where he figures into the teams plans in the final year, and whether Jamal Shead has a shot to become Kyle Lowry 2.0.
