If the Jazz trade with the Golden State Warriors who should they want in the deal

the talk of NBA Summer League continues to be will the Jazz trade Lowry marinin if they do who should the Jazz want to get from the Warriors Brandon psky Jonathan Kingo Moses Moody we look at them all next unlocked on Jazz you are locked on Jazz your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day hi there I’m David lock radio voice of the Utah Jazz Jazz NBA Insider this is locked on jazz on today’s edition of locked on Jazz the number one talk is will the Jazz trade Lowry marketing I don’t have any idea kind of go back and forth depending who I’m talking to and what I think and what’s the next but let’s dig into all the talk is some people say the Jazz want Brandon psky others say the talk is circled around Moses Moody Jonathan kaminga is the most talked about he’s the one who supposedly the Warriors would not give up to get Paul George so who are these three youngsters of the Golden State Warriors and which one should we want the E and flow of Cody Williams and Taylor Hendricks Mak some sense and we’ll see how they do today against Toronto in the game here in Vegas we’ll talk about that and interesting Zack Edy Donovan kingan comparison that was given to me by a scout inside or a front office person inside the NBA we’ll talk about that plus some other news and notes one of the worst summer league performances I’ve ever seen from someone as I mentioned I’m David lock radio voice of the Utah Jazz Jazz NBA Insider this is locked on Jazz your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz giving you Insight expertise geeky numbers and hopefully purchase terms apply all right let’s dig into this the story the rumors are the Jazz are still engaged with the Warriors I think it’s going to get fascinating it’s not going away anytime soon we have a deadline to some extent sitting there on the extension date of August 6th and so I don’t think this story is going away for the next 20 days and on it’s going to be really interesting to see on August 4th and 5th whether the the Warriors suddenly realize this is our last and only chance out there to go get significantly better I think the Warriors are better than they were at the end of last year I think the additions that they’ve put on their roster are better than Klay Thompson Klay Thompson had his runs but it was a real In-N-Out year for them and the frustration was boiling and I think there was just a lot of issues there and I think in that sense they they really may have found uh a way to be deeper and better and we’ll see they need a secondary score they need they they need Lowry Markin they really do um and so if they’re G to make another run with Steph Curry which I think they’re in my opinion they’re obligated to do because of who Steph Curry is it’s going to be interesting the Jazz would love to sign Lowry Mark in the extension and at that point like it’s the Warriors window is over so right now the conversation seems to stem around three Warriors young players and then a plethora of picks and a plethora of pick swaps and I don’t actually know any of the details and I don’t actually know whether or not who the player is really matters that much but let’s dig into the three players Jonathan kaminga Moses Moody and Brandon psky and see if we can learn anything on who we think here on lockon Jazz should be the player so let’s start back at their draft stage if you don’t mind let’s go back to the when Jonathan kaminga came into the draft and 2021 and go back because actually other than psky kaminga and Moody have really not played a great deal let me say one thing Moody and kaminga you’re gonna have to pay coming up if we trade Lowry marke in that doesn’t matter we’re going to be fighting to get to the minimum contract at that point so it shouldn’t shouldn’t matter all right here’s kaminga out of the g-league and g-league players seem to have developed a little later he was in the 90th percentile in transition so a lead athlete at finishing but he was not a good isolation player only in the 24th percentile he ran 19 pick and rolls not very many his spot up shooting was in the 21st percentile so he is a Red Zone Danger non shooter coming into the league his overall catch and shoot percentile was in the 15th percentile these are some of the least good numbers of anyone coming into the league 18th percentile in catch and shoot and off the bounce 16th he might be the worst statistically shooter that I that I’ve seen coming in League until this last draft now let’s fast forward to bball index and bball index in where Jonathan kaminga stands as a player right now and uh and what and where he what he’s done and where bball index has this wonderful thing on player cards where you can put in they will give you his top 10 things he does best and the top 10 things he does least well it’s a it’s a pretty so he’s best at cuts off ball Cuts he’s in the 98th percentile of the mount he cuts so he was in Warriors used him as a cutter his defensive positional versatility is Elite level he was in the 98th percentile back to where we were coming out of the g-league finishing Talent 998th percentile Rim shot making very very high level movement speed very high level uh defensive Rim deterrent pretty good interesting like that unassisted Rim field goal so this guy can get to the rim on his own by himself and he’s drawing a lot of fouls out isolation so those are the highest rated pieces for kaminga his lowest RAC rated shoot is three-point shooting Talent three-point shot making mid-range pull-up shot making pass Lane defense assists he doesn’t pass mid-range shot making catch and shoot shot making post up all of pickpocket rating defensively floater making offensively really just a one-dimensional offensive bully at 68 210 um his shooting last year from three points was 32% his career is 34% his overall free throw shooting is 70% he played 26 minutes a night last year for the Warriors he scored 16 points and at the end of the year he didn’t play a lot he was he was injured a lot of the year when they needed some wins late in the year um and he’s only now here’s the thing he’s only three years in the league he might still be developing but you have a consistent theme here where coming out of college he or coming out of the g- league he was not a particularly good shooter and those are the weaknesses he still has which has been somewhat of a reoccurring theme for me on this show uh for quite some time here right like this seems to be kind of my take is that I don’t necessarily believe that a player can improve their shooting the game when you move the I was talking to a high-end person the other day I was like you move the line back the floor gets the the the speed gets faster and the gaps close faster and we’re telling guys that they’re supposed to improve shooting it seems super unlikely for that to be the case it’s stunning to me with with what we just discussed remember the the the Boston Celtics had eight guys who average three threes or more a game they just won the title we we you can everyone can talk about mid-range shooting and three point and whether were two depend on three all this the fact of the matter is the Boston Celtics just won the title by being able to have eight guys on the roster took three threes a game or more I I really think you certainly can never have more than two guys on the floor that can’t shoot the more than one guy that can’t shoot the three but there’s a more and more level that you need to have like every guy in your team has got to be able to take high volume two or three or four threes a game I don’t know you know what that means for a Zack Ed or Donovan kingan or a walker Kessler or those kind of players they have to have a role still in our league but in the case of Boston they didn’t have that player their centers were Chris DS porzingis and um Al Horford and they shot the three so Dallas has Lively and Gafford who don’t shoot the three we’ll see over time I still think I’m kind of a fan of the Lively Gafford still think that matters as I said the other day I’m on team Kessler like he’s the second best Rim defender in the NBA you need it all right so that’s Jonathan kaminga and I’ll be perfectly honest the shooting thing makes luke warm it’s stunning to me if that’s true that the Warriors bypassed Paul George because they wouldn’t keep Jonathan kaminga to me that’s like whoa that’s a big stretch um at least in my personal kind of view of player evaluation and where they are kaminga is a player that though In fairness In fairness kaminga is a player that I probably would have if I was in a front office God forbid anyone ever had to deal with that um that I would have not been I would have had off my draft board I wouldn’t have been willing to draft because of his lack of shooting so um understand that that’s kind of where I I same way I was this year this last this next year’s draft will be that just came out will be a real test for me on how Ron Holland and balis and Stephen castle and these guys who I hey they’re non Shooters and I don’t believe it see where they come you guys can decide whether you believe anything I ever tell you again all right so that’s Jonathan kaminga what about Moses Moody I know a lot of people who think Moses Moody should have played a lot more in Golden State who believe in modus M Moo’s Moody and think mosus Moody is the actually untapped Talent is that true we check it next as we continue we’re just getting started on k e d o n NB to get your $20 off right now thanks so much for making locked on Jazz your first listen of the day if you’re looking for your second listen locked on NBA will be here all season long 30 minutes every single day reacting to all the news notes of the NBA boy there’s stuff going on I don’t understand well first of all I ended up having dinner last night with um John C former jazz man was pretty cool we were rookies the same year in Salt Lake in 1992 he was a rookie from Virginia having one year in the minors and I was a rookie broadcaster so we’ve known each other for 30 plus years so John CR had dinner with Kate last night um Lawrence Frank um was across the way and I really want to go talk to Lawrence Frank about what the heck’s going on with Kawhi Leonard that is the weirdest story I have heard yet so NBA the USA Basketball basically sends kawhai home says the Clippers in kawhai made in USA Basketball collaborate on the decision they kind of just leave it and then Lawrence Frank comes out and says actually the Clippers had nothing to do with it USA Basketball just sent him home which basically means USA basetball just kicked kawh Leonard off the team which maybe with Kevin Durant’s calf strain not being able to play and Joel and be’s knee USA Basketball did kick him off the team because they’re panicked about whether they’re actually G to have enough players but it was super weird to me like it was originally a collaboration and you wondered whether qu didn’t want to play whether some people said maybe he wasn’t starting maybe the Clippers are trying to trade him and then Lawrence Frank comes out with his comment that basically says they just kicked him off the team I thought it was the strangest thing and then obviously uh the the other aspect was the whole you know Paul George negotiation but I decided since Lawrence was having dinner I wouldn’t really bother him that with him that less but I was wondering so that that is a that is a crazy crazy story the other one that’s super weird by the way I’m just kind of on a tangent here and then we’ll get back to Moses Moody Gary Trent just signed a minimum deal with the Milwaukee Bucks I have no idea what his agent is doing that deal would have been there for him on September 1st Milwaukee could ass signed him to that deal any single day there’s like a real chance that someone like the Utah as could trade Lowry Markin in have not enough salary on the books and have to sign someone to Gary Trent like Gary Trent to a big contract or somebody to get to the minimum threshold there’s a few teams are kind of below the minimum threshold right now why wouldn’t your agent hang on for a little while you might be the difference between making like three million and 15 million weird weird weird deal all right let’s go to Moses moody this is a player that when you talk to people a lot of people think is untapped still really really think that um that that there’s still work here so let’s go back as we did and look at his draft stuff I had him after his freshman year at Arkansas 66 205 shooting guard as a red so I had him as a no the other Reds I had in this draft were zier Williams James book Knight Keon Johnson and Moses Moody so I was really concerned on what I saw at a Moses smoody why well his transition percentile was in the 31st percentile his isolation was limited 22 and his in so that wasn’t there his his this is interesting his and I’m not sure so far I haven’t seen why I just saw I have him red 98 percentile pick and roll and 31 percentile and he was actually did a little bit uh scored at a pretty high rate but only 31 pick and rolls but that told you he played the ball in his hands a little bit his shooting was in the 78th percentile catch and shoot in the 63rd percentile catch and shoot was in the 80th percentile and is off the bounce in the 50th I actually see no reason why he’s red actually think that’s a mistake I can’t figure out why I would possibly have had him red there’s nothing in there actually at all that red flags me at all that must have been I’m I’m surprised the transition percent up 34% on 109 is not great that’s a little concerning for his athleticism but his shooting is fine at 78 his catch and shoot is 63rd percentile catch and shoot on guard at 80th percentile is off the bounce at 58 on 62 like it seems like a pretty well-rounded 14th pick of the NBA draft that actually seems completely reason able for him to be that pick and make sense so let’s see where he ranks now after last year based on bball index and what his 10 best skills are and his 10 least good skills so his best skill is defensive positional versatility okay that’s pretty interesting in Moses Moody he’s 21 years old his body is still pretty darn good he’s uh Moody by the way if you want his official I’m going to go basketball reference which is not always official um but if you want his official uh measurements um Moody is official measurements of Moses Moody is 66205 he is 22 years old May 31st is his birthday so he’ll stay 22 for the entire next season um by the way and he’s played three years with the Warriors as well same draft class he’s played 5263 and 66 games in the three years let’s go back to bball index great say his pullup three-o shooting percentage is in was decently um good uh pullup three point uh is in the 96% L his spot up frequency was high his offscreen frequency was high his putback impact was high and his Rim finishing was good so a little bit of a surprise there playing a little bit off handoffs and off the screens in the Warriors system as a backup guard his lowest ratings were his three-point his isolation turnover rate was High um his to let’s see drawing fouls is low um Rim shot making turns around here is not being that great so that means his Rim percentage is good because when he shoots at The Rim it’s uncontested and his finishing talent’s not great so that backs up and then his overall three-point shooting is kind of he’s he doesn’t have a lot of stuff there he shot 36% from three each of his last three years so he’s an average uh shooter I’m a little surprised by the numbers on the off the the bounce three that we just saw there and I’m wondering if there’s some like low sample size things so let’s pull that up I’m doing this with you along the way I had previewed that but I didn’t kind of really take in entirely what that said because it didn’t doesn’t totally seem to make sense to me um so let’s take a quick look at this and see what we find um on it so Moses Moody last year shot very few off the bounce threes but impressively made most of them um so that is why that is the case I wouldn’t say that I really buy this but it’s worth looking into is the fact that Moody last year took 23 off the bounce threes and he made 12 of the 23 that’s pretty awesome it’s just not a sample size that’s worth much of anything uh for anyone to work with his catch and shoot game which is probably you know far more important for if you’re going to um evaluate player here is what probably matters a good deal more and if you know the warriors were a pretty darn good catch and shoot team with Steph and creating and Draymond Distributing and Moody last year on the catch and shoot game shot 35% on Two and a Half attempts which is below the league average so um and he does not go to line much he goes 1.4 times a game at 17 points 17 minutes a night that is still an untapped player eight points three rebounds kind of an assist assist kind of a steal um still kind of untapped you’d have to really decide that you think there so let’s go to Brandon psky the most recent who had a really good rookie year here and um last year and Poky was a green on my data from the from a Collegiate level 90th percentile in transition 84th percentile in isolation at Santa Clara he was not a great Rim finisher at 59 but on the pick and roll and 133 temps he was in the 78th percentile he was the 86 percentile in spot up the 94th percentile in catch and shoot the 98th percentile in catch and shoot unguarded and the 91st percentile in dribble off the bouts this guy had it all how some of the players that went ahead of him I.E Jaylen Hood Sho um is a little stunning um and frankly I think we could look back and see some other players even closer so uh psky was terrific last year and it’s not totally stunning that psky was uh fantastic last year in his rookie year uh let’s look at what bball index gives us as the 10 best kind of skills for him so he was a very good points per handoff player um he was a very good contact finisher he was very good pullup three-point shooter and a three-point pull-up shot maker and he did a pretty good job at Rim finishing um the only areas where he really had some weakness is kind of an overall question about his three-point shooting was not quite as good I think as um some people thought it could have been coming out of college um in other words by the end he was at 39% could have been over 40 I’ll take the 40 I’ll take the 39 and call it good I’m not gonna I’m not going to go with that as a negative um he doesn’t have like he doesn’t get a lot of FAL calls like there wasn’t a lot wrong with him last year nine points six rebounds four assists the only thing that would be a little disconcerting about psky last year was his 63% free throw shooting which makes you just wonder whether or not any of the other touch issues might not be quite as real and when you look back his college Years at Indie at Illinois and Santa Clara he was not a very he was a better free throw shoer than that 77% so um seems like he should be a better free throw shooter than that his you know he has plays like 16 games barely plays at Illinois and then goes to Santa clar and thrives and he’s not so he was not an old draft pick um and he is still 21 years of age um turns in February Midway through next year he’ll turn 22 um so that’s psky and you can kind of look at those three things and say to yourself like okay I get why they’re saying we don’t want to trade Brendan pmy and why the Jazz might be saying that’s what I want because out of those three guys when you evaluate it my order is probably the reverse of what we talked about psky Moody kaminga would probably be the order of players that would be my desire for the Utah Jazz all right the EB and flow of Cody Williams and Taylor Hendricks and why plus an interesting comp on Eddie and kingan and some other thoughts from we don’t need to talk about too much but the worst single summer league performance I have ever seen including the one I saw of Trey young a few years ago uh was yesterday we’ll talk about it all as we continue on lockdown Jazz thank you very much for making lock on Jazz your first list of the day everyday you’re the best thank you so much for every everydays have said hi to me here I love it appreciate it thank you makes me super it’s just fun to feel a community and touch it and all that kind of stuff so please do again today if you have the opportunity if you’re at the game uh Cody Williams and Taylor Hendrick have been W eban flowy Taylor a little more concerning right now for everybody both Sarah Todd and Andy Larson wrote big things about concerns on it neither Cody Williams or Taylor Hendricks play with the ball in their hands neither of them can really create their own shots so therefore the E and flow of the game and whether there’s some nights where the game comes to you and some nights where it doesn’t are that’s the kind of reality like if you’re Isaiah Coler um you’re just have the ball in your hands all time if you’re keante have the ball in your hands all time if you’re actually even Philip palski we kind of run the stuff through you a little bit so for Cody Williams and Taylor Hendrick they have to the game kind of has to come to them and they have to grasp it when it’s there and then at the same time they have to be pretty willing to like at times assert themselves on the game so Taylor Hendricks from an offensive rebounding standpoint going to go get it and it’s hard like if you’re in the corner like I thought Sean Sheldon’s comment was like we gotta get Taylor out of the corner like he’s just sitting in the corner kind of waiting for the ball and then and then he either comes to him or doesn’t and I think he’s right you’ve got to evolve a little bit past that for him um and and that those are why those two guys I think EB and flow kind of the way they do and I think that’s going to be the reality if they both can be elite defensively then you’re probably fine with it now it’s an interesting concept that Cody Williams feels like he’s verging on deserving minutes next year depending how our roster looks and so does Taylor Hendricks and then do you have two guys on the floor at the same time who can’t really dribble and aren’t really passers and aren’t really creators and then they’re playing with Walker and then there’s three guys and now whoa like what are we doing so I there are some real mix fits here between all these guys that I think is going to get really interesting and and hard for Will Hardy um before before we get to the end of this um next year all right so I had someone say this to me about just throw this in there back of your mind and think about it Donovan kingan and Zack Edy and they said their comp would be the Jazz at Rudy goar and Rudy goar could average at some point in his career you know eight points seven rebounds a night while Enis caner was averaging 16 points and 11 rebounds a night and which one was better well we all know it’s Rudy you were plus whatever with Rudy is one of the best defensive players in the NBA and you know this is only early stage when Rudy was average Rudy averaged over 14 every night after his third year in the league but like go to that like you know second and third year Rudy’s averaging nine points 11 rebounds and you have Anis who’s averaging you know 16 and 10 and looks like he’s a double double machine doing all this stuff and yet you’re minus 10 12 every single time Andis is on the floor and that was their comp that they thought Zack Ed would put up really really good numbers play harder than Andis and probably do things and he and he he does play really really hard so that’s where I think some of this is not fair but the concept from a jazz standpoint I think is really interesting and that is that Donovan kingan who actually last night dominated defensively in the Portland um Washington game that I watched where Alex SAR went 0 for 15 oh my gosh it was so bad um so it’s an interesting comp just kind of keep an eye on it and think about it um and see whether or not that turns out to be true because that was one of the more interesting I just try to share with you the super interesting conversations that I’m having at Summer League it’s been so great to be out here I’ve seen everyone bumped into Brad Jones yesterday and Walt parin and watch Vince larza coach Phoenix’s summer league team which was super cool um who else I just have seen so many old jazz people and um and so many current jazz people as well um just been really great um to be out here and see everyone saw Danny and tap talked to him briefly well uh hopefully see him again today um so yeah it’s been really great uh and it’s been a reminder after 32 years in this league that maybe I should come to this thing and actually see old friends like John Kate last night um and with former rocket Matt Bullard is just a wonderful Dude so it’s just been saw Kevin Pelton for lunch yesterday it’s just been saw Nate Duncan the great podcaster um it’s just been really really outstanding uh all right um few other notes that I thought were interesting last night I watched the bazus Holland game baz balis Ron Holland game which was uh Detroit against Chicago I think yeah um they actually both had some really big flashes now these were neither guys that I loved in the draft because I didn’t think they could shoot Ron Holland went seven of 20 and one of four from three he’s really good in the open floor um his two of six on the free throw line was not ideal he did have nine rebounds five of him offensive he just moves really beautifully nice player looks exactly I’m gonna hold to it looks like Harrison Barnes um he showed some real signs balis was dominant to open the game balis came out in the first quarter was just like overpowering people played with a zest and a joy and was was really I mean wildly impressive in the first quarter of the game uh he was four of five from the field everything was close and then for the rest of the night he goes two of 13 one of six from three no assists uh he had not pass it and had three rebounds for the whole night and that was a little less impressive so I’m still kind of questioning where those two FIT um bazis really did start the game in kind of this beautiful dominating fashion uh Washington’s bub Carrington looks really good that was the game against Portland that I watched um and Donovan kingan they did not score when Donovan kingan was on the floor by the way that’s just like worth noting um that’s where the Rudy goar comp kind of comes and he is really really crazy long wow um so it’ll be interesting just to kind of see how this plays out and what takes place because they have um th that was that was interesting to see I’m going to go watch the Jazz play Toronto today um and I’m gonna watch Phoenix probably play Oklahoma City later in the day um I don’t think there’s like a great the really good matchups were yesterday our the first game today is Sacramento New York all stop by and see that one for a little bit but sack is playing a pretty veteran team and New York’s got those second draft picks inter saw I don’t know if I said I saw Walt perin yesterday who works with the Knicks now um uh oh I saw TJ Saloon for a little while he’s really big he’s 610 legit for Charlotte first round draft pick he did fall to the ground three or four times while watching that’s not great like a little baby giraffes um he had a pretty decent game so that was another one I saw yesterday that was really interesting all right that is the update here from Summer League super fun um and thank you for all those who have said hi this is locked on Jazz for those you you are locked on Jazz your daily podcast on the Utah Jazz part of the locked on podcast Network your team every day
