the Cleveland Cavaliers at places like 923 The Fan Cleveland magazine and a number of other ones along the way I’m in Vegas you might be able to tell from behind me um I’m currently on the strip in Las Vegas took in a bunch of Summer League action today going to take on the Cavs tomorrow as they play a summer league game so I’ll be able to check that out tomorrow night as well as as well as Thursday night which if you’re listening to this obviously it’s today because I’m recording this pretty late at night Vegas time it’s been a very long day for me um but you guys don’t care about that what you do care about is Evan Mobley is still unsigned now when I say unsigned obviously he’s under contract for next year but Moy and the Cavs have not yet come to terms on a contract extension there are a number of different ways that this could go but I firmly believe the best course of action for all parties is for Evan Moy to get the max this summer this isn’t something that needs to drag out into next summer this isn’t something that the Cavs need to pinch Pennies on this is something that I believe Evan Moy has earned and will earn with his future play which is what this is all about so taking a look at some of the guys who Evan Mobley was in the same draft class as that have gotten this extension in Detroit Kade Cunningham was given a Max contract extension I believe that deal has the escalators in which if he makes all NBA next year or wins Defensive Player of the Year MVP some type of award like that then that number goes up to from I believe it’s 20 20 to $270 million over the life of the deal fron Vagner down in Orlando he’s got the same thing I was certainly I was surprised fron got the full Max um coming off of a year where I didn’t think he was all that good offensively um and that’s not to say he was bad but I just don’t think that he took the leap offensively that most people including myself thought he would um he was one of the worst three-point Shooters in the entire NBA this year so it was a little eye opening to to see him get a Max contract extension and then Scotty Barnes and Toronto is the other one Barnes of course was taken with the fourth pick won the selection behind Evan Mobley Barnes was an All-Star this year but I think overall you would take Evan Mobley’s body of work I know Barnes won the Rookie of the Year in something that I just don’t think was a very good vote and Evan Mo has been a defensive player of the year finals so I I would take Evan over Scotty at this point I just don’t think Scotty is going to be somebody that is one of the two best players on a winning team on a really really good winning team and I think I could say that about having feel pretty good about that but of those three Deals that I mentioned the one that I really think really think sealed the Cavs needing to give Moy the max was the fron Vagner one because you could make the case with Scotty Barnes being an All-Star this year that he’s more deserving of that Max contract and I get it I would rather have Evan but I get it if you if if you want to give Scotty Barnes at Max because he made an All-Star team in his in his third season I totally get it Kate Cunningham was the number one overall pick so again I get it I get wanting to have the number one overall pick on that Max contract it’s just something that’s so much easier to do it’s so much easier even if Kade hasn’t earned it with his play on the floor partially because of some injuries that he’s dealt with and obviously that situation in Detroit has not been great I I did speak a little bit with former Cavs head coach and current Pistons head coach JB bicker staff on Tuesday um over at summer league so that’s certainly uh you know JB seemed to be in a pretty good space and certainly uh I’m sure is very excited to coach Kate Cunningham but he’s someone that because the what comes along with being the number one overall pick if there’s still hope of success which I have I I firmly believe Kate Cunningham is going to be a good player in the NBA for a while giving him that Max contract extension is really not a big deal but then you get to fron Vagner where yeah he does a lot of things really well he’s nowhere near the defender that Evan Moy is offensively he was I believe the worst volume three-pointer in the NBA this year he’s good at a lot of things offensively but shooting just took an absolute nose dive this year for France vogner so when he got the max when that deal was reported I think it was last week the days are all running together at this point I think it was last week that he got the max that for me said okay well now Evan Moy has to get it like I don’t think there can be negotiation in terms of he needs to be considered a max player with what he’s accomplished and I don’t think that this is something and we saw this last offseason slash this offseason with Philadelphia and Tyrese Maxi where Tyrese Maxi was drafted obviously the year before Evan Moy he was not given a contract extension after his third year he was set to enter restricted free agency this off season and he came to terms with a Max contract extension with the Philadelphia 76ers that situation I think is so much different than this situation with Evan Moy I don’t think it’s worth saying hey we want to wait another year we want to do this but we want to see a little bit more the way that the Sixers did with maxi because there’s something that was so much different about that situation than this situation and that’s that the Sixers were able to preserve cap space by doing that the Cavs are not going to be in a position where they’re going to be a cap space team next year if they were in a position like that my opinion would probably be different it would probably be try and emulate what Philadelphia did with Tyreek Maxi because I thought that was a really smart way of managing the salary cap by Daryl Mory over in Philadelphia but the Cavs aren’t going to be in that position they’re not going to be in that spot where they’re going to be be able to spend big on free agent targets next offseason like they’re not they can’t land someone like Paul George just into cap space so that is part of the reason why it just makes sense to get this over with if you’re going to get to that point eventually the other reason why I think it makes sense to sign Evan moo to a Max contract this year you don’t want to deal with restricted free agency you don’t because there are times where you know you might be able to save a few bucks you might be able to get a guy on a four-year deal instead of a 5-year deal you might be able to just massage your cap a little bit because you waited I get all of those things but what that also does and I don’t think is necessarily talked about enough when a player who you know I I think with what Evan Moy has done defensively he’s deserving of the rookie max if you especially if you still believe the way I do and his offensive potential so I think he’s deserving of it when a players deserving of it and you make them wait for no reason it starts to it can Fray that relationship a little bit between the organization and the player I’m not saying that’s what’s happening here I’m not saying that’s what happens in every situation like this but it comes into play I do really believe it comes into play that if you say hey you know what we just want to see a little bit more we just want to give it a year it comes into play that okay well maybe this team despite drafting so high where Evan mbly was number three maybe they don’t believe in me the same way that I thought they did I think avoiding that situation is something that that should be done when it can be done and there’s no reason no reason that I see right now to not give Evan Mobley the max extension the rookie Max extension we’re not talking about the same contract that Donovan Mitchell got we’re not talking about some super max we’re talking about the rookie Max EX ion which is 25% of the cap that deal is going to make Evan Moy generationally wealthy when it does happen and I believe it will happen but I and I understand why you haven’t seen enough offensively but I don’t think the upside to waiting a year to sign Evan Moy to a Max contract extension I don’t think that juice is worth the squeeze I really don’t I think getting it done now putting this team in the best position for forward is something that should be done by Kobe Alman and the rest of that front office it’s something I expect to get done I’m a little surprised truthfully that as I record this it’s very early in the morning on July 17th on the East Coast I’m a little surprised it hasn’t gotten done yet just a little bit surprised I thought that it would have been done there is something though that should be negotiated and I think this is where the Cavs should take a stand in their contract decis discussions with Evan Moy I’ll tell you what that is next right here on lockdown Cavs Today’s Show is brought to you by game time game time is an authorized ticket Marketplace of Major League Baseball and that makes getting tickets faster and easier prices on the game time app well they actually go down the closer that it gets to first pitch so if you’re someone like me and you don’t always have everything planned out to a tea where you know maybe you might want to wake up one day and say Hey I want to go to the Cleveland Guardians game game time is going to be your best place to go find a last minute deal on great tickets to go watch the Guardians beat whoever they’re going to play that day CU we know if you go to that game you’re going to go home a winner they’ve got those killer last minute deals they show you the all-in price so it’s not as if you’re being blindsided at the last moment with a bunch of taxes and fees that you didn’t see coming game time doesn’t operate like that they tell you up front what that ticket is going to cost you plus one of the things that I think is a really cool feature on the game time app is you can see what your view from your seat is going to look like before you buy your seat you can preview what what the field what the court what the rink whatever you’re buying tickets through game time for you can see what your view is going to look like and that is very important to me and I think it’s something that should be important to you they take the guesswork out of buying major league baseball tickets I’ve mentioned a couple times the last time I went to a Guardians game Guardians Mariners Thursday afternoon didn’t decide until late I was going to go actually did didn’t even make it in for first pitch I was a little bit late that the Cavs should be giving Evan Mooby a rookie scale Max contract extension that deal is 25% of the cap I think it’s something that makes sense for the Cavs I think it’s something that makes sense for Evan Moy this is something that makes sense in my opinion for all parties but what I do think could be something I’m not saying this for sure but I see this as a potential obstacle in getting a deal done is that fifth year not that the Cavs wouldn’t want to give Evan mile the fifth year cuz I don’t believe that to be true but if a lot of players now in today’s NBA they want that fifth year option they want to have the ability to reach free agency a year early if all goes well and they feel like they’re ready for another Max contract they want to build up that leverage and they want to use that leverage to hit free agency early and strike rich on another payday I don’t think the Cav should be in the business of giving Evan Mobley a player option at the end of this next deal I don’t think that they should what I do think the Cavs have done is I believe they’ve done a pretty good job setting a precedent of not doing that and as I say that I know what you’re thinking well Danny Donovan Mitchell just got a player option on his deal you’re right he did I think Donovan Mitchell is in a different class of player though and I don’t think it takes some basketball Savant to see that I think Donovan Mitchell is in the class of player that should be getting player options Evan Moy is not there yet but think of some of the guys that have gotten deals contract extensions or even signed in free agency by the Cavs Jared Allen was signed to a contract extension after he was acquired via trade one of what I think has been Kobe alman’s best moves that deal five years 100 million fully guaranteed also flat so it was just $20 million a year which looks awesome now that the cap keeps growing and growing no player option on that Fifth and final year can’t hit free agency early the Cavs actually get a player for 5 years because so often you hear about deals oh it’s a and I guess this is the case with Donovan’s deal it’s a three-year contract extension with a player option in the third year no really that’s a two-year contract extension because if all goes well that player is going to opt out they didn’t give one a Jared Allen okay your push back well that’s not a Max contract that’s different you’d be right Darius Garland is on a Max contract Darius Garland’s contract full 5 years guaranteed no player option at the end of it that I think was a big win and I understand that Garland has not played up to his contract since then for a number of reasons and I’ve got a lot of faith he’s going to be really good this year but doesn’t have that player option at the end of it you can even look at lry markkanen’s Contract which the Cavs obviously negotiated um when they acquired him via sign in trade from the Chicago Bulls a few years back marinan not in the same class of player at least wasn’t in the same class of player when he signed that deal which looks like a bargain now but that deal doesn’t have a player option at the end of it it doesn’t it’s a fully guaranteed deal all the way through that is where I think this line should be drawn for the Cavs they can put in escalators that if Evan Moy wins defensive player of the year if he’s all inba you know that deal rises in value up to the $270 million Mark so we can get that extra percentage of the cap that’s fine take it from 25 to 30% of the cap go for that that’s awesome if he earns that you feel really good about where the Cavs are headed but I do think that the Cavs should are in the position where they can say listen we’re going to give you the max deal here we’ll put the escalators in we will do everything but that fifth year has to be fully guaranteed that fifth year is not a player option that fifth year is something that if you’re signing for 5 years that means it’s a five deal it’s not a 5-year deal that’s really a four-year deal if all goes well it’s a 5-year deal that is a 5-year deal now maybe after this next contract Evan MO is in a different class of player where he’s signing another five-year Max extension and he’s got a player option in that last year that is entirely possible when you get to that point when you’re when you’re signing the contract extension past the rookie Max and you’re that type of player and you’re wor worth it that’s when I start to think okay you know this guy player option totally cool with it but on the rookie deals unless you’re someone like Luca donich which Evan wble is not I don’t think the the player option is something team should be in the habit of handing out and I do think that to Cleveland’s credit to Kobe alman’s credit they’ve been in the habit of not giving that out and I think that habit should stay intact with Evan moble I think Moy should be on a Max contract extension but I don’t think that Max contract extension should be a year shorter because of a player option maybe you disagree with that um but I think that that is probably the thing that it might be holding this up I could see that being something that is holding this up because I’d be surprised if the Cavs don’t want to give mobile the max um all indications are Moy would accept the max obviously I I don’t think that there’s a player that’s ever going to turn down a Max contract extension off of their rookie deal I will believe that to be the case when I see it but I think the player option should not happen and it would not be surprising to me if that’s something if that is the reason if that’s the biggest reason why a deal hasn’t been agreed to yet wouldn’t shock me but I am here in Vegas summer league is going on the Cavs have a couple of Summer League games they’ve got the Warriors they’ve got the Lakers left and then a fifth game against a team that we don’t know who it is yet I’ll tell you what I’m going to be watching for tonight as the Cavs take on the Golden State Warriors in their second Summer League match up I can’t wait to see it in person what am I watching for that’s next right here on lockon Cavs thank you again for making lock on Cavs your first listen every day a reminder hit that subscribe button like the show on YouTube hit that notification Bell give us a five star view wherever you get your podcast that is how you can help to grow the show Cavs were not in action on Tuesday they are in action today they take on the Golden State Warriors they take on the Lakers and bronny James of course Thursday night at the Thomas and Max Center so what I’m looking for and what I’m very excited to see up close and in person I’ve got three things for you one I thought in the game against Milwaukee Luke Travers looked pretty good I thought he looked like a guy that should be a rotation player in the NBA sooner than later that doesn’t mean it’s fair say that or that that is something that should be written in stone after one Summer League game I don’t think that’s the case we need to see more but I thought that his first appearance of this summer league was pretty good I did think that I’m curious how much Pace he’s going to play with I’m curious how he’s going to be around the rim how that shot looks there’s a lot of things with him that I very interested to see in person it’s going to be my first time ever watching him play a game in person I’ve not been here at Summer League the last couple of years so I’ve never seen him play in person in a summer league game so that is number one number two is of course ammani Bates right he I think is you know maybe the biggest pivot point for this Cav summer league team because I think we know what Craig Porter Jr is um I think we have a loose idea of what the seiling looks like for Luke Travers but I don’t think we have those answers for ammani bat yet I don’t I think ammani Bates could be someone that is maybe an NBA starter one day maybe he’s never an NBA player I think the range of outcomes with ammani Bates is pretty significant and I think every time we see him take the floor in game action we learn a little bit more about him like I have been impressed with some of the things that he’s done offensively you know I think he’s been a good ball handler in the pick and roll at times I think he’s made some good decisions there there have been other times where I think he plays with with plays with blinders on a little bit doesn’t make the quickest decisions takes some ill-advised shots his shot diet is one that obviously in this situation in Vegas is probably a little bit different than what his shot diet will look like when he plays real games for the Cavs even real games for the Cleveland charge if he’s back in the g- league at all this year that shot diet looks a little bit different in this setting than it would in those settings but I would like to see that shot diet look closer to what it would be like in a game that matter matters um that is something that I would really like to see from him and something that would make me feel a little bit better about his potential as an NBA player as a rotation guy if he’s a seventh guy I’d feel a little bit better about that I do think him being a good shooter from the outside is Paramount to his success in the MBA so he’s number two what I’m watching for number three just what does this Cavs offense look like head coach Jordan not when he met with the media a couple weeks back you know we talked about how they want to do something similar but this is just such a different setting than a real NBA game so I get that but I also would like to see okay are they playing with more Pace even if they don’t have two bigs on the floor is that something that we can expect to see from the Cavs are they going to be a team that plays a little bit faster because I hope that they will and Kenny ainson has talked about that being something that he wants out of this team is that what that looks like how do they look like in terms of how they’re Distributing point guard duties is this something that they’re going to bounce back and forth you know we’ve seen Jaylen Tyson Cavs rookie who has drafted 20th overall that that’s going to be my bonus thing to watch too we’ve seen him play a little bit of Point we’ve seen Craig Porter Jr play a lot of Point ammani Bates play some point I want to see what Craig Porter Jr looks like and I want to see I do want to see more of Jaylen Tyson I thought he looked so much better in game number two against Milwaukee than he did game number one against Orlando I’d like to see him just keep building on that he doesn’t need to come out and be a star but I thought he has rebounded the basketball really well particularly in that second game I think that he finished in traffic a little bit better against Milwaukee then he did Orlando um that game against Orlando it looked like there might have been some you know first prame Jitters which I think it’s fair to excuse like that stuff happens and it could be worse you know he could be the number one overall pick that goes scoreless in a summer league game which happened so that’s certainly a a bright side there but I’d like to see how he continues to level up as he gets more comfortable with his teammates as he gets more comfortable with this organization as he gets more comfortable just being a professional basketball player so those are the things that I’m going to be watching tonight um I will be back with an episode tomorrow talking about what we saw I believe Spencer Davies is planning on joining me after the Cavs Warriors game tonight um we’re probably going to do that from unlv’s campus so I’m very excited to have a different backdrop um I I don’t know how well you guys can see the buildings in Vegas behind me as it is dark outside but we should be able to do it from inside the arena at UNLV tomorrow so stay tuned for that going to have reaction to the summer league game against the Warriors going to look a little bit ahead to the summer league game against the Lakers and of course bronny James on Thursday night so we will dive into all of that thank you again thank you so much for making lock on Cavs your first listen every day it is my pleasure to get to do this and talk to you guys The Cleveland Cavaliers should give Evan Mobley a max contract extension.
On Wednesday’s episode of Locked On Cavs, Danny Cunningham (@RealDCunningham) of Cleveland Magazine and 92.3 The Fan talks about why he believes it’s in the best interest of the Cleveland Cavaliers to give Evan Mobley a rookie max contract extension this offseason as opposed to waiting until next year to work out a deal. Plus, he talks about what he’s looking for in the third Summer League game the Cavs play.

  1. Emoni Bates will be a basketball player throughout his 20’s and 30’s in some capacity. If not NBA maybe in Europe? He’s just so much fun to watch play ball. The man is a baller. I think there will always be interest in his game.
