I don’t want the generic ESPN “said-nothing” analysis. What is your honest take on our summer league prospects?

Rob is going to be the backup point guard day 1, he has the ball handling and court awareness. I think he’ll essentially be a Tyus Jones level replacement player, including inconsistent offense.

TSJ is gonna shine at moments but make a lot of dumb fouls and travels first half of the season.

    Tall Edwards will be cut

I wanted Bronny James as a 1st round pick. Yeah maybe I should the fuck up and keep my takes to myself lol

    So far:

No injuries (Millers eye seems ok)

    No players getting arrested

None of the 7 with contracts (Rob, Shannon, Edwards, Clark, Minott, Miller Daishen) getting called out for missing practice, not giving effort, etc.

defense looks a bit better than I expected overall for a week of practice with guys who have never, and will never again play together.

    My honest take…

    A+

That’s it. I don’t care that Rob Dillingham is outplaying Steph, Derrick Rose, Trae, Brunson, etc in summer league or not playing to the level of Nowell, Dunn and Flynn. It’s summer league. Get the guys used to an NBA practice, film study, schedule, in touch with mentors, get to know the team starters who come out, etc. The game part is the most fun for sure, especially for the fans, but also the least important piece of it IMO and none of those guys will be playing the roles they are in now. I could care less how Minott creates in ISO off the dribble. If he’s doing that in an NBA game next year, someone F’d up, he’s a 4th/5th option. There is no need to look at summer league and go “yeah we made the right pick, Steph Curry can’t hit the broad side of a barn”.

    My less honest take…

it’s fun, Clark is the next coming of Dennis Johnson… Ok, maybe not but he sure looks like a guy who was the NCAA defensive player of the year. That bait steal in the 2nd game where he let the guy cut to the basket and seem open before undercutting the pass was my favorite.

Shannon JR is the next Westbrook but with a shot, moves in transition well, and drives to force contact. Makes sense watching him when you see his low FG% at the rim in college… he’s out there forcing fouls… maybe should start looking to just make the shot when he has the shot. With a serviceable 3 from the corner his game is playable as is Clark. NBA body. experience. high level of athleticism, excellent in transition play and getting to the line by attacking the rim. This dude was BUILT for the Summer League.

Dillingham will make AI look slow. Ok, I keep thinking back to NAW last year. Yeah he filled in for quite a while between the “Shake sucks but lets keep tryin to get him on a roll” bit and the Monte Morris acquisition. And ALL you had was the half-court offense. He was pressed every single time it seemed the ball went in his hands, and there was no chance to even think about pushing the ball, he will get it up, but it’s taking 6-7 seconds because he is taking his time to ensure there’s no turnover. Dillingham is not that guy… he has great handles and quickness. We know he was a 50% catch and shoot 3 guy in college which is insane. When he’s eventually playing with some other offensive players, and not asked to be ball dominant throughout possessions that I still think is where he will shine.

Minott is a shorter Olajuwon… He is showing a lot of why he was getting those late quarter possessions his rookie year for final shots. Sure KAT and Naz came along defensively this past season so he wasn’t needed there, but he grabs boards. He gets stocks. He is an active and athletic defender.

Miller has some great moments showing the next Grant Hill, Daishen looks like Daishen (saw a few Iowa Wolves games, that’s him), Hifi can look like the best player on the court one play, and like a high school kid in a rec league game the next. Apparently not a shot he isn’t willing to take. Edwards is Gobert jr. Big body, solid D, hella athletic, but not the most graceful athlete lol.

  5. TSJ is more promising to see rotation-level playing time than I would have thought. If you ask me right now I’m putting him in a game before Miller or Minott.

Dillingham I think is as good as advertised but in a different way; his shot hasn’t been falling as often as I’d like but he’s showing more as a playmaker than I was initially led to believe, and the shot will come along, that’s easier to have come back to it’s expected level than to become a good playmaker.

Miller needs more time in the oven but for a second round guy in his second year, I think there’s still a chance for him to get to rotation-level player.

Minott won’t get a second NBA contract; welcome to Europe, Josh. No hate on the kid, he’s obviously worked hard and been a professional, just doesn’t have it for this team at least. I’d prefer the Wolves cut him loose when the contract is over and if he can stick on the end of the bench for another team, then good for him.

All in all, if we call Kyle and J-Mac/Morris the ‘losses’ of the offseason, I think between Rob and TSJ the potential is very much there to slot into a ton of those minutes and be passable as rookies, with Ingles getting some of the Kyle minutes also.

Rob: everyone’s already said this, but the passing is good enough already. The thing I’m not seeing as much – he can shoot. You can’t tell from the box score because his shot selection is so horrific, but he should be able to come in right away and be a great kickout option for someone who can drive and create their own shot (Ant, KAT, Conley). We just didn’t get to see that part of his game much because no one else could drive and if they did they never kicked it out.

TSJ: if he can defend bigger/faster guys he should play. I don’t even mind if the driving doesn’t translate immediately, we need another wing behind Ant and Jaden. Ingles and TSJ are polar opposites so it would be good to have both as options if possible.

Clark: honestly man, I could see him snagging some minutes too, it’s just hard to crack the guard rotation right now and I’m not sure he’s big enough to handle your 6’6 and taller wing types. If he can stick with those guys, I would love to see him out there.

The rest don’t really matter imo. I’m honestly pretty disappointed with Leonard Miller and didn’t think he brought much to the table besides being large and even then he’s only 6’10. Hope I’m wrong on that one.

    * Interestingly enough, TSJ is somehow the player I’m least worried about contributing (and I’m including Minott and Miller). Am I way off here? I was worried about him being a “4 Year Nowell” in that maybe he was a bit of a blackhole, driving chucker, 0 assists, and non-shooter. But he’s a man amongst boys offensively and physically. If he defends like a dog in the Wolves defensive culture – as it appears he will based on SL – he’ll figure the offense out just fine and be a quality contributor on the 2nd unit.
    * Dillingham was probably underwhelming the scoring department or the “flashy” aspects of his game. But I’m encouraged by his potential as a real floor general. When I dug into his play at Kentucky, I was at first kinda worried he was just a Jamal Craword type, but I saw enough encouraging playmaking that I think he has a real shot to be a true point guard of the future after a year or two behind Conley (and a real backup point guard out of the gate as a rookie). I still worry about his durability and lack of size, of course….so I think the Wolves still need to add another point guard to the mix.
    * For whatever reason, I have very little hope for Minott. If I were Finch, I’d be trying to deploy him as a situation defender (the type of guy who could be unleashed to guard Luka for 6-8 minutes per half)…….at which point Minott will probably try to do too much and throw a wrench in his development and his fit on the team.
    * I have some hope for L.Miller, but I don’t think he’ll be in the mix very much in 24-25. Hopefully he has some splashy games when called upon when guys ahead of him miss game from rest or injury.

  8. IceTruckHouse

Didn’t get to watch every game but saw most of the last 2. I think people are being way too hard on Minott. He isn’t going to be asked to create on his own in the NBA. His rebounding was a big plus. Good cutter. Respectable 3pt shot. And I think his defense has improved to where he will probably start the year getting rotation minutes as the 10th man. TJ will be his biggest competition.

Miller is a big. Didn’t see anything that makes me think he could play the 3. Naz kind of can so maybe there is a Kat Miller Naz type lineup no idea.

    Rob will be fine.

Clark might be a spot defender. Maybe more love his defense.

  9. Impossible-Goal3492

The defensive dropoff between the player(s) Dilly is replacing is not as significant as we like to make it seem. JMac, Shake, & Morris are all league avg or below defenders as will be Dilly. JMac was even shorter too & Shake was there for his ‘o’

  10. ComputerPractical748

Thoughts are really good already so I won’t add too much – just that I think it’s pretty clear that TJ has been asked by the coaches to pull back a bit so they can start evaluating other players more and so he can start playing more a style he will play w the actual team this winter. His aggression on offense has dramatically lessened w each game after a tremendous first game. I’ve seen people on Twitter question why he’s being less effective; but it’s pretty obvious imo. Even in transition drives he kicked it out and passed first last game when he’d normally take it to the hole. His box scores for any remaining games will be irrelevant imo.

  11. Vivid_Ad_2428

Have a lot of takes but my biggest take-away so far is Minott seems very immature. He has not yet grasped a functional team mentality and I find his decision-making to be very frequently poor. A really physically talented player who is standing in his own way. Don’t see him making the jump into this team’s rotation at any point. Rookie Shannon and 20 year old Miller both demonstrating far greater emotional/mental maturity in similar 3/4 roles Minott will be fighting for.

  12. Milly-the-Kid

The guys who are actually going to be rotation players (Dilly TJ and Clark) showed great promise, the guys that are desperate to impress (Nix Miller and Minott) mostly played dumb selfish ball that helps show why they shouldn’t be nba players

  13. Dry_Repair_4119

this going be an interesting take

    -dilly

His shot have not been failing down but I’m not to worry that… his eyes as a PG is an A, his reads to pass to an open t8 is incredible but, I would like him to shoot more because sometimes he seems nervous on his shot, he is enjoying to watch and I love that he is more aggressive on defense unlike the first game and he coming together

    -TSJ

I truly think this kid is going be a star.. outta everyone on the sl team he has the most nba ready body, skill set and defense… I love the way he plays full speed and in control, his off ball defense is incredible getting picks and poking the ball free on opponents drives. His on ball defense he suffocates the ball handler causing them to pass or put up contested or bad shots… the way he gets around screens full speed is nice to watch. If his defense translates to the nba I see him getting 10-15 mins… I also see him getting more minutes in the 2nd half of the season In which his points will go up if naw/jmac don’t improve offensively if that’s the case I see him avg 5-10 points

    -Miller

He didn’t look good at first he looked lost and would put up bad shots but He showed himself game 3 went off getting great rebounds and keep the team in the game I don’t like how sometimes he can have hawk vision put up bad shots.. I see him getting mins if he can improve on his playmaking but how deep we are I don’t see him doing it this year

    -Clark

I’m going wait awhile b4 I make judgment because he did sit for a year.. but his defense is great I enjoy his pick 6’s in game 2 but he felt like a foul merchant in game3 against harder comp.. I don’t like that he went 0/3 from the field and put up bad shots… I think he needs to put more work in offense to crack some mins this year.. I seeing him gettin time next year if naw doesn’t resign –

    -Nix

He has great energy on the sidelines but in game he shot jacks to much especially when you need to know your role on the team.. you can’t get more FGA then dilly who the wolves sign to come in play make for them. I like his defense but sometimes he can fall asleep and put in lil effort in transition.. especially in the last s final seconds in game 3.. I think he could be great 3rd PG but needs to focus on playmaking and getting open looks to volume shooters instead of shooting contested mids or driving to go to the ft

The rest aren’t seeing valuable mins this year

  14. Black_wolf_disease

    Side note

You guys see Sarr yesterday? How tf you a 7’1″ center and go 0-15 in a game Gobert isn’t even that bad
