Boston Celtics “World Championship” challenged by Euroleague champs Panathinaikos
The Boston Celtics are the world champs … or are they? They won the NBA championship, but Greek club Panathinaikos is the Euroleague champion, and their coach said Boston isn’t the world champion until they go through his team. How to not laugh at this "challenge." Imagine, if you will, the MLS Champ "challenging" the Champions League Winner. It's about that big of a disparity.
I've watched Team France play twice now. The Celtics would definitely take a series vs. them. Serbia might be a strong challenge–they are definitely a TEAM. Canada too. But I'd still bet money on the C's vs. either of those teams as well.

It's not a doubt, that Celtics are best at club basketball.
World champions are Germany!
The term "world champions" is so weird and disrespectful and should be discontinued. It makes no sense for club competition – only international competition. It doesn't matter that the NBA is clearly the best league – you're still not playing "the rest of the world".
No way to pull off international play so long as they have an 82 game schedule.
Tom's right. Once a team wins the NBA championship, they're not gonna be in the mood to do this like a week later.
The reason we suck at soccer is not an "all eggs in the basketball basket." Thing. What about the women's? Look at Croatia–a nation of 4M people that competes well in BOTH. It's a combination of culture and how we develop. We just overcome it in men's basketball because SO MANY kids do it. Our participation overcomes the stupid mentality of AAU. For now. Let's see in another generation.

To qualify for the Champions League soccer clubs have to qualify the year before. The scenario John mentioned about the team rebuilding actually happened, Leicester City a small market club won the Premiere League, which means they play in the Champions League the next season. As a small market club they sold about 8 of their top 11 players in the offseason so the team that played in the Champions League was not the same teams that won the EPL. The same thing usually happens to other clubs too even the big clubs lose 1 or 2 key guys.
Tom saying FIBA could organize a cup between the NBA champion and the Euroleague champion is quite funny because neither the Euroleague nor the NBA are part of FIBA.
The Euroleague owns the best two competitions; Euroleague and Eurocup whereas FIBA owns the third, the Champions League (same name as in football).
So I highly doubt they wouls organize something for two competitions that have nothing to do with them. Especially considering the bad blood between FIBA and the Euroleague. The EL has the best referees in the world and FIBA refuses to use them in the Olympics and other international tournaments.
I'd like a world Allstar game. The thing is, if you play here, in the NBA, in America, possibly went to college here, you won't play against us in the game.
