Would former No. 1 overall pick Deandre Ayton be a viable trade option for the Pelicans?

If there is some world where Ayton would take a paycut, we could keep BI, not give up Herb or Trey I’d do it. That is likely an insurmountable hill to climb. $34 for Ayton is WILD

What this article didn’t seem to mention is he had a hell of an end to his season where he went on a MASSIVE run

The problem is that Ayton wants to get paid. Is he willing to be after Zion, Murray, Trey, and CJ in offensive priority? At 26 years old & a former #1 pick, if I were him, I wouldn’t want to sacrifice future earnings by being a role player. But if he is… it’s worth a swing.

Despite his [limited shot chart](https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/deandre-ayton-shot-chart-by-season), his free throw percentage means he doesn’t need to be subbed out late in games and his free throw area jumper is decent. Teams would struggle competing against the athleticism of a healthy Zion/Ayton front court.

His [bag is decent](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fg66JR0NWRM). But he’s plagued with injuries, an inconsistent motor, and questionable professionalism. How much of it was due to Monty Williams? It’s hard to tell. It would be a huge bet on Willie Green and the staff getting the most out of mentally inconsistent player.
