More Reasons Not to Trade Rui for Jerami Grant, plus the Lakers Fill Out JJ Redick’s Coaching Staff

More Reasons Not to Trade Rui for Jerami Grant, plus the Lakers Fill Out JJ Redick’s Coaching Staff

Last week, Mike Richman from Locked On Blazers helped explain why trading for Portland forward Jerami Grant, while at least a somewhat defensible idea on paper, was much less positive for the Lakers in practice.

Well, it seems like that’s the consensus among NBA execs, as well. Reporting from Sean Deveaney, writing for Heavy.com, confirms the consensus from the scouting report episode: That giving up real value for Grant doesn’t make sense. Moreover, doing it at the expense of Rui Hachimura (who would almost have to be included to make the money work) may not even make them noticeably better, especially when you factor in other rotation players who would have to go. Grant doesn’t improve the team’s weaknesses enough to justify the move, and his strengths don’t help the team enough to make the cost worth it.

Meanwhile, listeners/viewers chime in with other potential deals, including one for Blazers guard Anfernee Simons, but when you start having to add more players things get real complex real fast. Let’s say the Lakers did manage to create a deal where they used both first rounders to get multiple players back (Grant, Simons and Cameron Johnson from the Nets)… given all the $ they’d have to send out, would they actually get worse?

You only get to trade assets once. The Lakers have to ask whether any player currently out there is worth making the move now. How much do they really lose in waiting?

Things could shift a little after Lauri Markkanen’s future gets more clear, which should happen today. At the least, we know if Markkanen isn’t moved by the Jazz on Tuesday, he either won’t have a chance to sign an extension with a new team until after the season. If he signs with Utah on Wednesday, that makes him ineligible to be traded until after the February deadline.

Clarity on Markkanen, in either direction, could shake a few things loose around the league.

Finally, JJ Redick has a full coaching staff. It’s filled with experience, which is good, but is it a dynamic, forward thinking crew?

  1. First time I went to full screen for one of your Pods. I needed to so I could analyze your trade. Seems like a complicated way to move Russell.

  2. At one point this offseason, I wanted the Lakers to trade for the sake of making a trade. But we must remember, Dallas and T’Wolves both looked bad the season before they made it the WCF. Sometimes an off season of limited moves and adjustments help teams make a leap. Lakers are the same imo.

  3. thats why before season or before training camp lakers must address thier back up center nick richards is a fine back up 7ft long cheap only making 5million a year you can just flip reddish and wood and probaly two 2nd rd picks for nick richards. you need ad not overplay him thats why they need a legit back up center and nick richards check the bills

  4. "Wouldn't shock me if some of these assistants weren't wild about the idea of relocating even for more money laterally to serve under somebody that has never coached before and in a lot of ways, has skipped the line" – Someone had to say it 👏🏼😅

  5. Just give up guys no trades this year it's a red carpet roll out for bronny and his daddy to play together on the playground. We are gonna roll the dice loose again, and then the following season, we will be more flexible to make moves. we can get a trade package for bronny and his dad and throw in brow 🎉🎉 we won't have the clutch empowerment rule us anymore. I appreciate you're time but we suck again, and that's why I can't watch anything, Lakers. It's a joke. It's a bad joke. I won't care till we ship out clutch. Go sparks

  6. No way you trade a 26/27 year old early-prime, improving player being paid only 60% of a 30+ year old past-prime player with a 35M player option in 4 years. Thats a no even without a pick being added. I can’t believe this is really a feasible discussion.

  7. We keep trading our good players. Russell is a good player. His backup was Dennis Schroeder, but we traded him and ended up with Vincent who didn't do anything for us even when he did play.

Russell is the third best player on our team and probably the fourth most consistent, but he's still very good. We need to get rid of Cam Max Lewis and Juan. They don't do anything for us. I would pick up Dwight Howard Javelle McGee and Wenyen Gabriel. I

Then I will go into the season and see how it plays out and next on the chopping block would probably be Jackson Hayes and Christian wood depending on how the season goes.

Anthony Davis needs back up And Rui needs back up. We can't keep trading our good players because when we do that, it also messes up the chemistry.

Thats the move I want to see.
    Discuss that

  8. Worse Rebounder than Rui
    Worse defender

Already this team's two biggest weaknesses

And to become even worse we would have to give up picks and WAY OVERPAY the guy who makes us worse

    No thank you

  9. The main reason that the Grant trade is a bad idea: the front office is still reeling from the Westbrook debacle and can ill afford another mistake.

  10. Couldn’t one argue that however marginally Grant might be better than Rui is offset by the benefit of continuity with keeping their roster as is?

  11. Don't trade hachimura Vando reaves Christie and kneltch . They're the future of the Lakers . Just get a big man center that does not need trade .
