Silver said he was inspired by European soccer tournaments to come up with this, but the problem is he half-assed it. If you did the regular season as normal, and had a separate single-elimination tournament with the G League and other various leagues in North America (Canadian and Mexican, throw in the Puerto Rican league etc) you could get some actual intrigue
“The magic of the cup” is that on any given day, a 5th tier team can beat a 2nd tier team, or a 3rd tier team can beat a 1st tier team. And sometimes a lower tiered team can make a surprise deep run. I know they already play a ton of games, maybe you reduce the NBA regular season to 70 and you offset it with the money you’re generating from this cup going on as well? But as-implemented I agree it feels silly

Wasn’t the biggest fan but boy did those court designs push me away. Firstly how can you put all that effort into the IST courts and then completely disregard the Finals courts.
However, I did enjoy the knockouts and would enjoy it more with better branding.

Im not out on the in season tournament. Its not yet been fully developed and it can be made more exciting but i think it could be a fun feature going forward especially if non nba teams were involved
