Someone made a comment referencing Mo Bamba that if you’re any type of prospect at a young age, you’re going to get snatched up by a prep program in another state. I don’t think we’ll ever see again what Marbury did – top high school prospect in the country and stayed and played in the PSAL. A lot of prospects would go the Catholic school route, but I don’t think they’re doing that anymore, except for Cole Anthony.
The days of honing your skills on the playground are gone. In fact I knew someone that went to school with Kyle Anderson in NJ, and he was only allowed to play in a gym. Never in a park unorganized.

This theory is not scientific at all but “playground skills” aren’t prioritized in the NBA like they were in the past.
Everything is so optimized and the league is so athletic and skilled that every single player comes up on AAU circuit and gets sent away to a top prep school that it’s become so much more about physical gifts.
The top pick in every NBA draft now is like a 6’10” 3 level scorer who can pass. As the sport becomes global, where you are from matters less and less

Answer is simple. Real estate in NYC is prohibitively expensive.
