Why Naji Marshall is the UPGRADE Over Derrick Jones Jr the Dallas Mavericks Need

The Dallas Mavericks are gearing up for an exciting season with Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving leading the charge. In this episode, we discuss the potential impact of Naji Marshall as a replacement for Derrick Jones Jr. and how he can elevate the Mavs’ performance in the NBA.

Nick Angstadt discusses the potential impact of Naji Marshall as a replacement for Derrick Jones Jr. on the Dallas Mavericks in this episode of Locked On Mavericks. He argues that Marshall, who recently joined the Mavs, could be an upgrade due to his promising shooting and versatile defense. Angstadt highlights Marshall’s ability to guard multiple positions and his improved three-point shooting, which he believes could help the Mavericks take a step forward after falling short in the NBA Finals. The episode also delves into Marshall’s offensive contributions, including his driving and passing abilities, and examines how his role might evolve throughout the season.

  1. I think Exum will play the most minutes out of him Dinwiddie and Hardy because the is the best defender of the 3 but I agree there is only about 20 minutes tops between the all of them.

  2. All i know 4 sure is that this roster is much improved over all. On paper. Will it translate to the court. ? That the question. And how long will it take 4 the team chemistry to take full form. 🤔

  3. Naji strikes me as a PJ clone. About the same height/length/build that makes them able to switch on anyone 2-5 (sometimes 1 too). They've both shown to have 38-ish percent in them from 3. They can both do things down low. Both will Stand on Business. I'm very glad that the Mavs can get 48 great minutes from the 4 just like they do at the 5 and the 1.

They can also get 48 great minutes from Klay & Grimes. That's all I heard from people in tune with the Knicks…mini Klay, mini Klay. That only leaves a hole at the 2 spot whenever Luka or Kai are resting.

The Mavs have options. Maybe it's Hardy. He had a pretty good stretch in the playoffs and maybe he's ready to be that 3rd playmaker/ballhandler. Or maybe it's Dinwiddie. Maybe he finds his mojo that he had in Dallas. Or maybe it's Exum. He had a nice Olympics. Started to come up small when the games were getting bigger which sounds like last season.

So that very well could be 48 solid to all-world minutes from every position. And haven't even talked about Maxi & OMax. That's a really deep bench there. Hell, even Lawson & Powell are pretty nice for the 14th & 15th players.

  4. I talked about the Mavs being a deeper team in another comment. But they are a better team too.

They lost DJJ, Josh Green & THJ. They got Klay, Naji, Grimes & Dinwiddie.

Naji & Grimes can do whatever DJJ was doing on defense. It may take 2 guys to do defensively what DJJ did for the Mavs. But Naji & Grimes are much better all-round players on offense. DJJ was ok with the 3ball and a force on the fast break…not much else.

Grimes can also do what Josh Green was doing. But probably even better. Just a little more skilled at everything but Josh clearly has him beat athletically.

Klay for Timmy. Is this even a discussion? Even if we assume the Klay is just uninterested in defense…he's still a big upgrade over Tim. I'm not gonna ever cringe watching Klay take a 30 foot shot with 20 seconds on the shot clock…but that's what I've been doing with Timmy for like 3 years now. Gone are the days where I'm scratching my head wondering why Luka never even touched it on that possession cause someone took a dumb shot. Well, there's no such thing as a dumb shot with Klay. He's proven he can make those insane shots so I don't mind him taking them.

Hmmm, imagine that. Nico has built a team where Luka never touching the ball on a possession can actually be a good thing. Seriously, like up until just now I would've said it's a dumb idea for your star player to not even touch the ball…let him swing it around or maybe some kind of give & go type of touch, but still TOUCH THE BALL. But now I can envision possessions where Luka doesn't get a single touch on the possession and I'm not hating it. Kyrie, Klay & Lively/Gafford make for a damn nice trio. So yeah, Luka can hang out in the corner & catch his breath every now & then.

  5. ⚠️ DJJ can’t be replaced…. His chemistry & attitude. The will to win. Every player is a special ingredient…… if DJJ reads this… we appreciate everything you did… and we hope Naji will be able to shine his brightest as well.

  6. This season entirely rests on J Kidd's ability to properly rotate the roster and get them to give their best. It is not that important who start and who closes but WHO closes AGAINST WHO.

  7. It's a 2 for one that makes the Mavs deeper and tougher. DJJ was crazy athletic and a psychological advantage vs a lot of opponents. How the hell do I keep this guy from disrupting my game with all that athletic energy? The Marshall Grimes replacement may be better for fresh defender rotation and tougher guys.

  8. Its a completely different problem. When do you get Naji on the floor? DJJ was a starter. Now, unless you are benching Klay to start Naji, its a completely different problem. You could put Naji out there for your 2nd team, but that isn't really what DJJ did was it?

  9. Thank you! LOVE DJJ but people acting like he was prime Shawn Marion or something is wild to me. He stepped up when Josh Green and THJ didn’t, I salute him for that, but come on man lol

  10. For me isn’t the perfect replacement because the Mavs need a top 15 PF and a top 15 SF.
Boston have 2 two top 5 on those positions plus a top 15 PG and a top 15 SG
Naji will be a perfect replacement if he, and the same goes for PJ, if they can become to 10-15 on their respective positions
AND Klay plays the sixth man role

  11. people who are overreacting about djj leaving, are the same people who viewed him as a low end bench guy coming into last season

  12. Klay is the replacement, not Marshall. If Marshall is the replacement then that means he is startimg instead of Klay

  13. Bro I've been saying this on every Rusty Buckets, Hoops Tonight, Alex Hoops video where it's relevant: the Mavs will be better offensively AND defensively this year. Naji and Grimes both are good to great defenders who have seen success guarding the opposing team's best player. The lineup flexibility they'll provide is going to be huge

  14. On Paper we have A+ Depth in every position, possibly the deepest team in the West. A++ on Alist stars, Superstars with Kai, Luka, Klay. Championship Pedigree on the Team US counter to Wemby, Derick Lively manning the center position, with Gafford one of the top centers backing him.
On top of everything you have Now 3 of the Clutchest Players all on the same Team Kai- Luka-Klay!!!!! Last year Dallas led the league in Super Clutch stats let alone in the clutch!!!!! Racooon Squuuuaad heellll to the yeeeeessss we got better!!!!!💪💪💪🔥🔥🔥🚒 We bout to be on Fiiiiiire next season!!!!!

  15. This seems like a fairly deep roster now. I hope Lively makes a big leap forward and hopefully OMAX and Hardy take major steps forward. I'm still a little uncertain about Klay but we will see what he has left in the tank.

  16. Can we all agree that DJJ was a great role player but wasn't established for the whole year?

He was in and out of the lineup, and inconsistent with his shot and confidence. Yes, he is clamps on defense at minimum and a good lob threat, but he was not a top 5 Maverick for most of last year.

Marshall and Grimes can honestly give you 120% of what DJJ brings. Just main loss is a lob threat

P.S. I love DJJ he was one of my favorite Maverick role players of all time bc of the playoffs so I'm not trying to hate on the guy.

  17. Jones Jr. never in his history could play for anyone, please talk to me about toughness. Marshall brings absolute toughness, protection of our best players. The hacking of Luka will be answered, the strength inside will be a bonus. Absolutely a more accomplished player . a much stronger force. Naji will suprise some people, but those who watched him play not at all. GO MAVS

  18. Predicting it's going to be a slow start to the season, with J. Kidd figuring out line-ups, Luka & Ky slow start, end December & January we'll start to see the good Mavs again,…
Overloading Luka&Ky took a toll last season in a deep playoff run, so I think they won't repeat the same mistake twice

  19. We got rid of THJ and Josh Green ; addition by subtraction — we got better with them simply being off the roster

  20. I watched lots of the regular season and the entire playoffs. When the playoffs were over and I started to watch YouTube videos like this, people kept talking about DJJ. I was confused who they were talking about. Who was DJJ? I didn’t know who that was. I would have remembered him if he was bad, like I remember Kleber, but I would also have remembered him if he was important.
