1993 NBA Eastern Conference First Round Game 2 Charlotte Hornets at Boston Celtics, May 1, 1993

CHH 99, BOS 98 – Charlotte Hornets first win in postseason history came in this overtime classic at Boston Garden, with Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning leading the way.

This game is the perfect case study that, even at ages 35 and 39 respectively, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish could effectively compete with the younger, more athletic stars of the 90s like Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning. Players from earlier eras adapted and evolved to fit the style of play and officiating of their times. Additionally, athletes who played during overlapping eras also benefited from advancements in medical and training techniques.

Brook Lopez didn’t attempt a three-pointer for his first six years in the NBA, but he adapted to the evolving style of play and became a proficient shooter. With talent and dedicated practice, proficiency is achievable.

The 2010s and 2020s eras aren’t “evolved” or beyond reach by any standards; players like Jason Kidd, who played from 1994 to 2013, adapted to changes in the game, navigating different playstyles, rule changes, and generation of players. It’s not rocket science, children. Just use some critical thinking.

Player of the game:
Larry Johnson: 23 PTS, 9-16 FGM, 56 FG%, 7 REB, 3 AST, 1 STL, 1 TOV

Notable performance:
Kevin McHale: 30 PTS, 13-18 FGM, 72 FG%, 4-5 FTM, 10 REB, 1 BLK, 1 TOV

The Charlotte Hornets’ first playoff victory was a dramatic double-overtime thriller, clinched by Larry Johnson’s game-winning jump shot. Johnson, who had struggled throughout the final period, nailed his only basket in 14 attempts from the field with 4:49 left in the second overtime. His shot from the top of the key gave Charlotte a 99-98 win over the Boston Celtics on Saturday at Boston Garden, leveling the series at 1-1. This victory was particularly sweet for the Hornets in their first-ever playoff series in their five-year history.

Despite the loss, Boston’s Big Two had standout performances. Kevin McHale, who was expected to retire after the playoffs at 35, scored 30 points, his highest total in at least two seasons, and grabbed 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Robert Parish, at 39 the league’s oldest player, contributed 19 points and 16 rebounds. The series now shifts to Charlotte for the next two games on Monday and Wednesday.

Johnson, who led the Hornets with 23 points, including the final two that gave them a 99-97 lead.

McHale finished just four points shy of his career playoff high in his 167th playoff game. McHale, however, was his own worst enemy when he missed the first of two crucial free throws with 1:38 left in the game. It was Boston’s only miss in 17 attempts. Although he made the second free throw, it wasn’t enough as Boston fell behind 99-98 and failed to score again in the second overtime.
