Seattle to get back Supersonics history if NBA decides to expand there. OKC will be treated as expansion team (2008-present)

The Oklahoma City Thunder will give the Seattle Sonics their history back if the NBA grants Seattle an NBA team, per @espn

“Sources said if a team was to return to Seattle, the Thunder would cede the Seattle history back to the SuperSonics — just as the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets reclaimed the Charlotte-era history of the New Orleans Pelicans when Charlotte switched from being the Bobcats to the Hornets in 2014.”

This has been known for 16 years, since the city of Seattle and Clay Bennett came to terms on a settlement for the team’s relocation.

“Sources” are just people familiar with the lawsuit settlement agreement, which is publicly available. Or maybe it’s ESPN using [its own article from 16 years ago](https://www.espn.com/nba/news/story?id=3545175).

The Sonics are returning, aren’t they?

May they fare better than the other re-activated franchise of professional sports, the Cleveland Browns.

The whole bringing history from city to city is weird in the first place

I like this and I wish all moves were treated this way.

As it should be, makes me sick every time the Titans wear the Houston Oilers throwbacks. Who cares they wore the jersey for a year in Tennesse, that history is all Houston

So when do the Minnesota Timberwolves get their five championships back from the Los Angeles Lakers?

Can Minnesota get the titles that LA stole back, too?

as a sonics fan from like 2002-2008 why does the nba all of a sudden want to be back in seattle? the entire nba structure (outside of mark cuban) wanted them to move to oklahoma city, a place with less of a skyline than my canadian college. this wasn’t some golden pro-capitalism opportunity seattle is the 13th biggest media market in the country. now they want back? i just fear the team will end up moving again to like el paso texas or little rock arkansas if the wind changes directions or something

Should do this across the board with every team that relocated.
