The fact that multiple paragraphs of this were dedicated to Kobe is all I need to know. Most of this is factual information about what a phenom Tatum is laced with the typical “he’s cosplaying as Kobe” spite.
I’ve said some version of this multiple times, but a large reason Tatum is “hated” or criticized as being “corny” or “having no aura” is because the core generation of NBA internet fandom grew up dickriding Kobe and they hate that Tatum modeled his game after him and in most ways has already surpassed him aside from the fact he doesn’t openly war with his co-star, doesn’t have a coach writing books about what a shit teammate he is, and doesn’t have any rape trials.
If he had a Shaq and a Scandal, he’d have “aura”, but unfortunately this generation grew up worshipping Kobe and whether they consciously realize it or not, they are conditioned to react negatively to anything threatening their childhood idol’s legacy.
To be fair, I saw the same overly negative reaction to Kobe from a generation of Jordan-stans when he first came out. Inevitably in 20 years you’ll have a generation of Tatum-stans who grew up worshipping him as children and hating whatever young hotshot shows up saying he grew up modeling his game after the GOAT, Jayson Tatum.
