Mavericks Rumors | Vlade Divac: ‘Time Will Tell’ If Luka Doncic Is Better Than De’Aaron Fox
Luka Doncic was picked by the Mavericks in the 2018 NBA Draft as part of a draft day trade with the Atlanta Hawks, but the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings both passed on him. Former Kings GM Vlade Divac drafted Marvin Bagley over Luka due to his relationship with Doncic’s father Sasa. Bagley has gone on to be an NBA journeyman, while Luka has turned into a generational superstar. Divac also says he passed on drafting Luka because he had De’Aaron Fox, and would have had to make a Fox trade if he drafted Luka. On today’s show, we break down exactly what Divac said. Former Kings GM Vlade Divac on passing on Luka Doncic in the 2018 NBA Draft:
“I had De’Aaron Fox at that position, whom I drafted a year earlier,. At that moment, I thought that Fox was a player who could become a franchise player in the next period. Time will tell if I was wrong. As things stand now, it looks like I am, but I have faith in Fox that he will have a better career. I could’ve taken Luka, but then I’d have had to trade Fox. Interestingly, Phoenix also passed on Luka, and at the time, their coach was Igor Kokoškov, who had coached Luka in Slovenia. Atlanta drafted Luka, but they traded him away. It was Dallas that eventually took him… Maybe I made a mistake, but time will tell.”

LUKA was better as a 17 year old in Real Madrid than fox now. Also look at the careers already. Lukas been to the finals. Conference finals mvp. Scoring champion. 5x all star, 5x 1st Team,
When fox was a rookie luka was winning a championship in the second hardest league.
Now imagine if luka came into the nba with a decent team and not an old wes matthews and Deandre jordan. Dirk and jj, An over confident DSJ.
Luka should already have 2 MVPs 34, 10 and 9. While making the finals. Any other player woulda won it.
He has no other choice than to defend his decision on Fox. In his defense Fox is a great player. All Star level and should remain at this level for years to come. But he is not Luka but not far behind him.

I am a former 20 yr Metroplex resident. I was there to see Luka drafted and was excited. I moved back to my hometown of Sacramento now focusing on my Kings and the 1st thing I noticed was Fox and his 1-man team ways of playing hoops. He averages less than 5 assist a game. Though Vlade was a King during an important time of Kings success, he has a Laker connection that I always hated. He gave young Luke the head coaching job. So can we not mention Vlade when we mention the Kings? Thanks. I still ❤ The Mavs
