Karl-Anthony Towns traded to the New York Knicks + Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo to Timberwolves

REACTION to the Minnesota Timberwolves trading Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks in exchange for Julius Randle, Donte DiVincenzo, and a protected first-round pick. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) discusses why the Wolves’ roster is worse for this season, but the trade opens up future options for the Wolves. Plus, why DiVincenzo was the key to the trade and what Randle will provide (both good and bad) in KAT’s spot in the Wolves offense.

  1. This trade feels like we're punting on this season when this was to be the best upcoming season in our team's history. Such a massive let down.

  2. Naz is taking kats spot and he is better at it

I really don’t understand what you are saying

You are taking like you don’t watch Timberwolves games

  3. I hate the ownership of this team. This was just a salary dump and the Wolves got worse. The #1 pick we got back is basically a second round pick too.

  4. Personally like this . Randle & Kat are similar level of player so adding donte as a bench starter and maybe even starter at some times and grabbing a 1st that will likely not convey this year but either 2026 or 2027 it will and could easily trade it next summer. Now if naw is bad they aren't forced to play him in the playoffs with donte . I don't see how wolves are worse people gotta get real about Kat

  5. I wonder what the Top 9 protected pick in 2027 means if there are 2 Expansion Teams?
    2025 Top 13
    2026 Top 11
    2027 Top 9
    2028 2 Second Rounderd

  6. I was soooo excited for the upcoming season, now all of it has been deflated, back to soul-sucking timberwolves basketball as usual. I'm glad for his take though, tired of other homers trying to pretend this is a great trade, it's objectively not and makes the timberwolves worse.

  7. This tells me the front office of Minnesota didn’t think they had a good chance of winning it all this year with the roster.

So they wanted to try and play it long term and focus for the next couple seasons instead.

  8. I don’t see how the wolves get worse on defense.

If anything the offense and spacing could be wonky, but the DiVincenzo part of the deal is kind of underrated in my opinion. If Minnesota can make the offense work, it’s a pretty good deal in my opinion.

Compare this with Denver who had to let kcp go for nothing to stay under the second apron and this trade suddenly doesn’t sound so bad.

  9. Ben knows bball, but hate his positive takes on Kat and overly critical takes on Jaden McDaniels (previous episodes). Kat doesn't bring a winning attitude when it counts

  10. What a wonderful day for TWolves fans!!!
TWolves dumped a $50 MILLION/yr postseason liability, low basketball IQ decision-maker. Poor Knicks. Watch Towns sabotage their postseason as he has MN's
    🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

  11. They couldn't get rid of Julius Randle and they ended up getting the best shooting big man of all time lmao

  12. Idk —Towns is a prolific scorer and threat in scoring—you need multiple stars—-they must feel Naz can take it up a notch and Finch can mold a team—flip side having Towns and Golbert on the floor is vunerabke to teams that get out and run and bury 3’s —-

  13. Bro it opens up so much money to bring in another star. How is that being missed? Y’all so emotional over kat who had a ton of flaws for 60mil. Like you talk about him like a true star and then add a ton of caveats that are super important. Bad in the playoffs, foul trouble, injury prone, disappears in big moments, 60mil a year.

  14. I feel your assessment is wrong. I think the team is better in both short and long term. Unless the short-term is the first 20 games of the 24-25 season compared to 23-24, then you may be correct.

  15. Sooo short sighted. You wanna hold on to kat for one more year even if we will only maybe be a bit worst instead of 4 years of declining 60mil kat. So emotional

  16. The trade is a win for both teams. Knicks win with a talent upgrade with KAT. Wolves win by freeing up cash flow to attract better players and reward their current players in the future.
