NBA Media Day Reaction: Warriors new look, Lakers SKY-HIGH vibes, Nuggets & Russ fit | Hoops Tonight

Jason Timpf reacts to the best quotes to come out of NBA Media Day. Can Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors count on Draymond Green to be ready to go after a tumultuous 2023-2024 season? Is it time to buy into LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and the Los Angeles Lakers as reports circulate that JJ Redick has the team more organized and upbeat than ever? Will Russell Westbrook change his game to help Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets return to championship form or continue to have high highs but lower lows in the later stages of his career? Jason also touches on the biggest media day stories from the 76ers, Celtics, Bucks, Clippers, and Spurs before continuing his NBA power rankings with Anthony Edwards and the Minnesota Timberwolves.

  1. russell westbrook might be the least self aware human being thats ever played in the league.

  2. Interesting discussion of the Westbrook fit in Denver. I don't think he'll play much with the starters except when Murray is injured (inevitable). Murray typically staggers with the bench unit but I think Malone will go away from that and run with Russ as the bench unit point guard and stagger MPJ with that unit to produce more scoring. If Russ can be a potent POA defender, orchestrate the second unit as a facilitator, and push the pace I think it will work. The bench unit has a lot of athleticism and should be strong in transition but hasn't been because Murray doesn't like to play fast with the starters or with the bench during his staggers.

  3. I get the ideal but I donā€™t consider draymond as a non-shooter anymore heā€™s gotten better and better at shooting and shot great last year on multiple attempts. No he isnā€™t high volume but he was a smaller volume above average shooter last year.

  4. Mailbag Q: do you think the Kat trade shows that the wolves donā€™t view Denver as the ā€œteam to beatā€ in the west anymore? Thanks love your content keep up the great work

  5. Nobody is paying $17M-18M for good regular-season players (DLo & Rui) its a non-starter for any playoff-caliber team.

  6. As a Celtics fan I LOVE that they signed Russ and let KCP go.

The Nuggets got a lot worse

  7. Mailbag Question: Hello Jason, do you think KAT can play the same role for the Knicks similar to how KP played for Boston for a championship or am I crazy to think like that? Appreciate the content as always!

  8. The Bucks weren't bad against above .500 teams tho. It was the bad teams that beat them. It was when their was lineup inconsistency and bad stagger lineups(poor bench players) that lead to losses. Not their starters. Their starters dominated teams more than any other team in the NBA including the Celtics who also played in the "weak East".

  9. As others have pointed out in the chat, Westbrook is a Reggie Jackson replacement, not KCP. He probably won't even play the backup 2 guard much. That will be Strawther if things go as planned in Denver.Ā

    Mailbag question:

Im curious if you agree that Westbrook is an upgrade from Reggie Jackson or even Bruce Brown? Perhaps the thing that makes me most excited about Westbrook on the nuggets is the potential to bring out the best in Murray and challenge him everyday. He said on media day,"My job is to make Jamel the best he can be". I take your warning about Russ seriously as a Denver fan but this is not the same as LA. He is on a minimum contract playing on a bench that has not been good the last couple years. Do you think it's possible Russ somehow makes the bench worse then it was with Reggie? This to me seems to be very low risk high reward if it goes well for Denver. So yes he will have to be a different player and as of now he seems to be embracing it and I look forward to seeing how it plays out on the court.

  10. Mailbag: Hypothetical here, if dlo and reaves are redundant. Why were the lakers so hell bent on keeping reaves. He is not a substantially better player then dlo. Itā€™s a tiny difference at most. The lakers could have traded reaves for Caruso and that would have made the lakers a much better team with a much better chance at the title. Also Caruso would guard Murray a million times better and they have a much better chance at beating the nuggets. I then see them in the finals with the Celtics and who knows from there

  11. Lakers got vibes cause they donā€™t care about a championship this year. Burden lifted. Lebron gets to play with his son so you should be happy.

  12. Very good breakdown! Sat through the whole video and it had me thinking critically about matchups, fits, potential, and much more! Thank you.

  13. Rest of the list prediction:

    6. 76ers
    5. Mavericks
    4. Knicks
    3. Nuggets
    2. Thunder
    1. Celtics

    Diehard Knicks fan here btw.

  14. Dude. Nuggets fans donā€™t need your advice on how to root for Westbrook.
Lebron isnā€™t half the leader by example that Jokic is. The Clippers ARE NOT the nuggets and the rockets and thunder had harden and Durant as teammates. F right off if you think heā€™s not going to have an entirely different experience here in Denver.

  15. Draymond had the chance to say, Iā€™m going to do my best this season to be available 100% of the time. Why canā€™t you just admit you made mistakes and you will do your best now to get past them?? You got an ego problem too.

  16. 82 games meaningless. Dallas showed the game plan. Get a few new guys in January. Let's go Nuggets. Zivela Srbija.
