[Redick] on if he thinks Rui could take the next step: “What is the next step? You tell me. You’re creating the narrative, you tell me, what is the next step? I don’t care about what the next step for Rui is, I care about how he impacts winning on our team.”

Rui in his last 30 games, all as a full time starter finally

    17/5 on 58/46 splits lmao

what i’d like to see from his is just aggression, you got a small on you, take advantage, you missed on a post up one time over a small? don’t just stand in the corner, go back to it

  2. k1ngkoala

The next step for Rui is learning how to defend. Idk if he’ll ever be good at it but if he can become at least average then I have nothing about his game to complain about (I know he technically guards out of position since LeBron usually takes the power forward matchup) Great player otherwise

  3. d4videnk0

Hachimura is entering his 6th season and there’s still the belief he’s a 20-8 ppg guy who never played the right role or minutes. I think he’s a decent player but we’ve pretty much seen what he brings to the table.

  4. DEEZLE13

The fact no one can say what the next step is is telling

  5. ProgrammaticallyCat0

Rebounding, the answer is better rebounding

  6. TomorrowKnite

Scoring isn’t going to be an issue for him, dude loves offense. Defence and rebounding will be his biggest things this season. Can he stop the guy infront of him, locked in on team defensive schemes.
Happens to most bigs (CWood, MHarrell) just because you can put the ball into the hoop, does not mean you’ll get PT.

  7. Rui and Haywood highsmith are 2 guys that everytime I happen to watch them play they turn  into Klay Thompson. Like my perception of them is so much higher than most peoples

  8. This dudes gonna produce a bunch of clips like this all season.

  9. HamSandwichRace

JJ is going to be needlessly combative with reporters about the “narrative” all season long because he can’t stop being a media personality.

  10. SectorNo2661

The next step for Rui is not losing his starter spot because he doesn’t get back on defense. Or not boxing out, letting guys get offensive rebounds.

  11. meteor_jam32

Why is he being rude? You’re not on First Take. It was a basic question.

  12. Bigron454

This man was just coaching 3rd graders. Now he is coaching the LOS ANGELES LAKERS. Crazy.

  13. Ghosts_of_the_maze

“I’m trying to politely ask if you think he’s going to become a better player. Which I’m guessing you know and are being weirdly antagonistic about, JJ”

  14. GreekGodofStats

Literally 15 seconds after ending his career as a podcaster, JJ snapping at the media like he’s been a coach for decades

  15. FUELNINE

JJ obviously knows Rui has areas for improvement. He’s just doing this to protect his players and call the media out on their bullshit when they push narratives without specific details.

  16. wesimar14

Sounds like a fair question. What exactly is the “next step” for Rui in that reporter’s mind?

They asked an open ended question hoping that JJ would give his own take on what Rui “needs to do to take the next step”.

  17. I know everyone’s basically circlejerking rn, but the quote written out makes it sound wayyyy more aggressive than* it actually came across. He actually entertained and answered the question pretty civilly. Seemed friendly enough. Watch the clip guys

  18. FEELS_G00D

JJ was aging so nicely but hes going to look like Ty Lue after one year of coaching this team

  19. mnguy045

Whose the blonde that’s what I care about

  20. RVAIsTheGreatest

Not endearing and certainly caustic but he’s protecting his player and his players will appreciate that.

  21. No-Plan-8837

Been watching Rui since he got drafted. He’s a mid range specialist that can hit a couple of 3’s as well, but on defense, he’s not that great of a rebounder and his feet are rocks so he isn’t fast laterally. I think he can be a great spark plug off the bench with a competent point guard to set him up

  22. kungfoop

The psychology in this is glaring. He knows the position he’s in and he’s going to be aggressively defensive when it comes to media bs

  23. LV_Blue-Zebras_Homer

Great answer to a pointless shit stirring question that would be spun. It was obviously going to lead into more problems.

    JJ knows what’s up.

  24. WholeWideHeart

JJ said, fuck my old colleagues. I hate the media I was a member of, yesterday.

  25. JayDee62

My favorite thing about JJ is his questioning potentially stupid questions from the media. I’m unsure what will happen first: him snapping on the media or the media turning on him.

  26. ConceptNo1055

Rui plays a role. Nobody gets 30 FGAs (AKA next step) when you play a role.

MPJ wants to take 30 shots too but can’t.

  27. DoctorFunktopus

It’s his sixth season, Rui is who he is. There is no next step. He’s an ok player, who isn’t good enough to start for the Japanese Olympic team.

  28. ripe_data

He’s already got them daydreaming about the hit pieces they’ll write if this goes poorly.

  29. Hinohellono

He’s too media lol but I’m not sure that’s bad. He’s protecting his dudes. I’m excited to see him coach because I don’t think he’s afraid to change

  30. shimmybuckets

Rui is soft and scared. He’s doing his best lol

  31. Luka_Dunks_on_Bums

JJ is about to log back into his YouTube account

  32. I like that he got real pissy and then actually provided and answer

  33. WaterIsNotWet19

It’s that Duke Blue Devil in him that brings out the douche

  34. jejsjhabdjf

It’s weird how quickly the narrative on JJ shifted on reddit when he got the coaching job. People used to refer to him positively as his podcast had some legit basketball discussion and wasn’t all sensationalist talking points like Stephen A Smith, then he got the job and everyone immediately started shitting on him and people are in here saying shit like he spent too much time on first take.

  35. casebarlow

He’s wound pretty tight and it’s the first week of training camp

  36. Timdalf_theGrey

Meanwhile Allie in the background 😄

  37. I love how JJ has kept the same amount of disdain for the media
