[Charania] Sacramento Kings star De’Aaron Fox is bypassing a three-year, $165 million maximum extension this year as he and his representative, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, position the All-Star point guard for a larger deal in the 2025 offseason, sources told ESPN on Monday.

Edit – apparently Oladio said Cap on the 110 million Pacers story, but he did turn down 2 years 45 million from the Rockets, and then got injuries since being traded to the Heat, and is now on ESPN

3yr/165 feels like around what I’d be comfortable paying Fox tbh. A 5yr/$345 supermax, though… I dunno, man, the current structure of max contracts and the second apron makes it *really* tough to gauge what a guy like Fox ought to be making. I mean he’s, what, a top 25 player in the NBA? Top 20 at best? I certainly can’t get him into the top 15. It’s not like he’s still super young, he’s almost 27 and relies a lot on his speed (although if his improved jumper from last year sticks around, that ought to extend his viability as a #1 option quite a bit). Just kinda tough
Of course that’s all predicated on him making All-NBA, which he *has* done once before, but competition for guards to make All-NBA is always crazy (even with positionless teams) so I wouldn’t necessarily bet on it happening again.

So people are reading to much into this, he could sign now and take possibly way less more or bet on himself to make a lot more money.
In terms of the contract next year for the king’s we’ll see. The one thing I’ve learned with the numbers post the media deal is numbers are so inflated so the initial price tag is like a shell stop but just business as usual for the league.
Fox ain’t making all-nba in todays league. There’s an insane talent. He’s not a top 30 player. He’s gonna be relying on A LOT of injuries and some insane narrative to get all-nba.
Mistake IMO. Near zero chance he makes all-NBA this year. Will have a hard time even making the all star team. Yes the Kings will be trapped into having to make some big, unfortunate concessions for his contract, but I don’t think he’ll end up with much more per year salary.
To each their own of course, but doesn’t seem worth the risk.

It’s not much of a gamble since he’ll sign for more than that even if he doesn’t get the max but it’s highly unlikely that he makes a team.
He’s got to jump Luka, Shai, Ant, Brunson, Steph, Booker, or Hali and that doesn’t count Ja, who I think will certainly get in, nor Maxey, who I also think may, not Mitchell, Dame, or Brown (who I’m assuming goes in at a “F” but is still even though it’s ostensibly positionless but will take a spot either way). He may rank ahead of a few of these guards depending on how the season goes but this also doesn’t count the outside chance of a random crazy hot season as primary scorer from a Harden, Trae, or Lavine or a major jump from someone like one of the Jalens. He’s not likely cracking the top 6 or even 9, if voters are generous with positions. He’s in the mix but there is so much talent.

Future deal average at $69 million a year is INSANE. Kings better hope he doesn’t make All-NBA for the future of their franchise. They have gotten a lot better over the last couple years and this year might be their best in a long time with DeRozan joining.
An All-NBA season from Fox would surely destroy their chances at a title if that’s something he wants. Guy is a very good player, but he isn’t worth that money.
If he is eligible for Super Max, he can still sign for less. My guess is he will sign a 5 year deal worth $275-300M. Other teams wouldn’t be able to match.
