Boston Celtics Overcome Slow Start to Dominate Wizards

The Celtics started off a bit shaky against the Wizards but turned things around for a solid 122-102 win. Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown really stepped up after a rough start, with Tatum dropping 25 points and grabbing 11 boards, while Brown put up 27 points.

Derrick White deserves a shoutout as the unsung hero, making some key plays when the team was struggling early on. And let’s not forget the bench! Payton Pritchard and the backup big guys—Luke Kornet, Neemias Queta, and Xavier Tillman—really brought their A-game.

John Karalis of Boston Sports Journal has all that and what the Celtics can learn from this one, like starting strong and not taking any team lightly. Stick around for some fun insights and a breakdown of how the Celtics can keep this momentum going!

  1. Yes, there might be lessons but what I’m seeing is the same team as last year they are consistent every night and that’s all we can ask for I mean there was a few things here and there we need fixing but at the end of the day we still playing for something and you can see it in their way they plan they want it backI mean this will be great. I’m excited about it and you are too go Celtics.

  2. Its great to look for lessons because the team has to be better than last year to be able to repeat. Not record-wise, but just better. Because every other team in the league is gunning for them and studying them. How do you deal with that? Well, just be better than you were. Its hard to repeat, most other championship teams do not get better, most actually get worse. Not only did we retain almost everyone, we simply might be better just based on the individual improvement of our young stars.

I hope they dont take their foot off the pedal this year. Ideal scenario is be ahead of everyone else you could rest in your remaining games and have practice and experiements.

  3. See and that is exactly what you want to see on a night when Tatum’s jumper doesn’t fall. He was able to get to the rim, was active on the glass, and made the right passes all game. My biggest takeaway from this game the freeness Mazulla is letting the bench play with, I love it. Pritchard shot well from three and Tillman gave you what you hope he can provide often. NQ gave you great value for 14 minutes!

  4. @John thanks as always for these podcasts :). To me this could be a very scary year with JT Olympic debacle… and Jb's disrespect to not make any all defense teams or be asked to the Olympics….. the offseason seemed to go as tho coach Joe M cast a spell to make his go (as you said last week) "see what did i tell you." lol

  5. That 3rd quarter was an offense clinic. They interviewed Pritchard afterwards and asked him if he practices those half/three quarter/full court bombs and he said not at all. I was surprised at first but then thought he doesn’t overthink anything-just goes out there and plays. He’s so much looser now than he was first couple years and it’s obviously paid off. Thanks John! ☘️🔒

  6. Huge difference in the way that they played against the Knicks and the way they played this game. Not nearly as much ball movement. More like guys trying to get their own points now will work against certain teams, but I don’t know. I don’t think Tatum needs to be taking 12 threes a game. I know he made some and if they’re open fine, but we don’t need six off the dribble threes. Those are hard shots. Why settle for a hard shot when you don’t have to?

  7. No John, you’re right, he is falling in love with that shot. I was thinking the exact same thing while watching the game

  8. he just kept taking them but he takes it too far and it’s obvious and I don’t know how no one on the staff says anything. If he stopped doing that he would be the MVP. His percentages would not be skewed the way they . I know he needs that shot to open up the rest of the game, but you don’t need to take that many once you hit two you’ve opened up the lane they’re stepping up now

  9. Let's keep them coming! Plus Queta… more points (12) and rebounds (7) than Kornet AND Tillman combined in less minutes on the floor (14).

  10. I got a hunch that a lot of these podcasts are going to be "Celtics blow out *insert team*" this year. This team is so dialed in and focused right now that a 70 win season may not be out of the realm of possibility.

  11. The high average talent level of the Celtics are doing well overall in this early season. It's only been two games and I'm confident that we will see more defense out of this team as the season progresses. I hope that an unexpected loss doesn't need to be the wake up call for the Celtic defense.

  12. I’m glad you made that point of the sidelines, I’m cursing at those strangers last night for spilling expensive beer and judging them to just be rich A-holes. Oh! Calling you out minute 23 and no championship belt😅 Thank you!

  13. I was hoping you would give your take on Alex Sarr .. Why is Valanciunas not starting over him? Seems like Sarr could be more successful coming off the bench to start season

  14. Tatum with the PE shirt. Yet another reason to respect these guys lol. Bennett and reddick can talk about plumbers while our guys show respect to the past and are about something. Great time to be a Celtic fan

  15. The "fortune cookie" criticism is valid; but the counter to that is Mazzula. To me, Mazzula's so hyper-focused and such an animal, that blowing games by not playing their style isn't a non-zero thing, but pretty close.

  16. Was at the game, was glad it wasn’t over until the 3rd quarter. Tatum could’ve had 40 easy. Jordan Poole came in hot. The arena went nuts on that Pritchard heave. Queta played big minutes when we needed him. Hopefully I get to a game in Boston one day

  17. No team can beat the Celtics in a 7 game series. I bet they really want that in season tournament championship!!! I can't wait for The Unicorn to be back on the court.

  18. Neemie has been looking really good. Im confident with him and Luke holding it down with KP. They make it easier to rest Al also.

  19. John is right this comment section has only given me 1 argument in the few years I've been following. And to be fair it was when the heat pod came over to badger us😂. Have a good day green team

  20. Yeah, it's going to be blowout season. Barring unforeseen injury to those who shall remain unnamed, I'm picking the Celtics to win the NBA Finals. I'm also thinking this is the start of a dynasty, 4-5 Championships in 4-5 years.
