Minnesota Timberwolves transition woes are an issue + Julius Randle at the 5??

The Minnesota Timberwolves have allowed a higher rate of transition opportunities to opponents than any other team in the league through the first week of the season. Ben Beecken (@bbeecken) breaks down the biggest issues surrounding the transition woes, as well as the Wolves failing to find opportunities for their own offense to score in transition. Plus, more lineup discussion, including Julius Randle with and without Anthony Edwards. Will we start seeing more of Julius Randle at the center spot?

  1. I think we need to get our young guys more experience playing sooner rather than later. TJ Shannon is 24 already and Minott was on the bench last year all year and Rob can really get major minutes so he could be ready to start next year. All the championship caliber teams have a 10 or 11 man rotation right now. There’s no reason with our depth that we should be running only playoff lineups right now

  2. I completely disagree with your take about the short rotation. Maybe its because I am a Mavs fan who is used to Kidd playing big rotations all the time, but the best time to test young guys is early in the season. Your team should play a 10 man rotation with Dillingham/Minott playing 10+ min each and without Ingles. What is the upside behind playing a 37 years old Ingles 5 minutes? He knows what to do and what his role is. But your team needs to give the young guys a chance to get acclimated before they are actually needed.

Your Top 8 (the most likely PO rotation) is clear as day. And they will have more then enough time over the season to built chemistry. But what if 37 years old Conley gets injured in December and you need Dillingham to play 20 minutes? You think he would be better being ice cold not having played one minute in months? Or if he at least already got his feet whet and has actual game time experience next to the main guys?

Dallas plays at least a 10 man rotation. If Maxi is back, probably even 11 deep. Will Hardy play in the PO, if everyone is healthy? Most likely not. BUT because he got his reg season reps last year we could use him, because THJ became unplayable. Pretty sure you remember his minutes in the WCF… Right now Marshall/Grimes play under 20 minutes. Same as last year, when DJJ barely played 15 min to start the season. But I would bet money, that one of Grimes/Marshall will play 20+ minutes in the PO. Most likely both. So their minutes will increase over the season. BUT if they cant play because of injury, guys like Hardy, or Exum (after he comes back) will be well integrated and can be used in the PO if needed.

I really do not like playing small rotations with heavy minutes early in the season, cause there is no benefit to it. Your team is somewhat the WC version of the Knicks, who are also already down to an 8 man rotation. Why play every starter 36+ minutes and not give at least 10 of those to a young talent like Dadiet? Talents do not get better just sitting on the bench… At least the Knicks have the excuse that 2 rotation pieces (Achiuwa/Robinson) are out. Your team does not…
