The Precious Achiuwa Preview

Samson Folk brings on Jamar Hinds to preview Precious Achiuwa’s season.

(This is Samson btw): I will have a little studio set up soon and the videos will look much better right away. I recently moved to Toronto to cover the team in person, which is great, but Toronto renting is hell on earth and I’ve only just come out on the other side. Thank you for the patience.

  1. Last season they always started cold is a good point. But what was the true reason? Is lack of defense in a Gary the reason? Anecdotally they looked like to me that they often lacked the focus to start, making bone headed mistakes, and ramping up only as the game progressed. Love Scottie, but I feel that he was often the one who needed more time to get into the game. So just on this issue, not sure if starting Precious would help. I maybe wrong, just a thought.

  2. I agree that the Raps best unit has Achiuwa instead of GTJ. However with GTJ looking at a player option this offseason he would likely not take kindly to a bench role. Letting GTJ start also showcases his talent for maximum trade value, just as it did for Norm Powell before him. My sense is that the Raps will be looking at the contracts of PS43, FVV and OG3 and GTJ's money won't fit their salary cap budget, thus necessitating a trade befor the deadline.

One possiblity I haven't heard mentioned is starting both GTJ and Achiuwa and bringing FVV off the bench as say, a "load management" technique and bringing him back as a starter down the stretch after the trade deadline and into the playoffs. (I think the chance at starting point guard for Barnes would also maximize his growth and development).
