Is Pascal Siakam a SUPERSTAR? – Advanced Analytics Breakdown and Comparison

How does Pascal Siakam stack up against the best players in the NBA? Is the Toronto Raptors All-Star and leader being unfairly dogged by biased American media types, or is there some merit to why most people outside of Canada see him as more of a top 25-30 player than a top 10 player?

We compare Pascal Siakam with players like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, Jayson Tatum, Jarrett Allen and Bam Adebayo, David Lee and others to get an idea of how effective and impactful Siakam was last year in what many termed to be a breakout season.

We use crafted’s box plus minus model to stack up Siakam against consensus top 5 players to see how big the gap is, and then see how Pascal Siakam compares in one-number metrics like PER, BPM and VORP. Further we provide some comparable players and take a dive into one big weakness holding Siakam back from megastardom.

  1. What's so difficult to get here. Siakam has never claimed he is a superstar, he has claimed to be a top 5, or top anything for that matter.
All he said was the he wants to progress into a top 5 player. What's all these silly topics just so you and other ungrateful raptors fans to bash him. At least I understand you're doing it for clicks and engagements, it's the camp followers I don't get. If y'all hate Siakam that much, go raptors hq and protest.

  2. I do think him picking up the game late does factor in. There is a piece of that argument that you are ignoring. In fact you are ignoring it in favor of suggesting that people are saying ohh with a few more years of development he will have more run way. That isn't what they are saying… at least as I understand it. I think its pointing out that yes at some point your experience with the game grows and at some point having more years under your belt (ignoring the excuse of bad habits developed because you could argue it the other way too), does matter and does continue to matter.

I also think you continue to ignore health as a factor. Even the compatability metric or comparable metric that you showed you yourself stated it is flawed.

I don't know if he can become top 5.. although depending on this year I think being in the MVP voting discussion as a top 5 candidate is different than being a top 5 player in the NBA at a given time. As you said, Kawhi didn't play last year. BUT those things do have to factor in when discussing these things. Zion injured his ankle AGAIN and is day to day to start the season. Hey you can be the most talented person in the world but if you are never on the court to display it what use is it?

Now all that said, yes you did bring up some valid points but I still think it is fair to at least consider him as a top 20 player and could definitely be as good as top 10 this year. I think the David Lee notion is a a stretch. In June of the players who averaged at least three isolation attempts per game, Siakam ranked seventh-best, scoring 1.03 points per possession in isolation during the playoffs.

I agree though I do want to really see him take over in a playoff series and truly separate himself. Just my opinion could call me stupid but yeah.

  3. SI got him at 30 fucking 2! 30 fucking 2! He is 2 time All NBA in the last three mother'fucking years. Seriously! Fuck

  4. No. And he's not even close. You can't put him in the same tier as Giannis, Luka, LeBron, Kawhi, Jokic, KD, etc. He's not on that level.

  5. Ok first of all🤬🤬, im not sure who is saying hes a superstar.. at most ive heard him called a borderline superstar and second of all most of your analysis of the statistics is a very very flawed perspective considering 90% of the players being comparable to him statistically have absolutely no grain in their body of self creation. I mean for christ sakes youre trying to compare him to guys like jarrett allen, bam adebayo, rudy gobert…. who get fed straight into their mouths like fccn kids 😭😂😂👎👎dont be so fooled by skewed stats… pascal leads the nba in isolation which means this man literally creates almost a full 24point average every night. Dont try and shove a flawed closed perspective on us as a base of evidence. I mean for goodness sake guy…. JARETT ALLEN??? Jarett allen??! Lmaooo get that crap outta here man… if you refine the players and actually put comparable players in terms of not just statistical impact but self production impact this is not close, like 80% of those players you shown in his statistical proximity are getting scratched out as actually not comparable. Pascal is better than them despite the statistical conparison for a very valid reason i stated earlier. Create your own offense and impact then we can talk… Be real 😂😂😂😂😂 not sure exactly who youre trying to convince but many of us dont think hes a superstar but i had to call you out on your skewed shyt perspective

  6. He has been top 10 and top 15 already in the last three years . That is what All NBA is about. Seriously dude you absolutely shit the bed on this one. Also the idea that Tatum is a better defensive player means to me you gotta do two things. Get on the court with Samson Folk and get on the blower with him too.

  7. I dont get the point of this video.

You took 20 minutes to trash Pascal Siakam, regardless of your disclaimers. Haha. Why? I dont get the crime in Pascal Siakam saying that his goal is to become a top #5 player.

Whether or not he achieves that goal or not is irrelevant. That is his goal and he should be encouraged and not trashed. I will never agree with your opinion on this.

  8. The Raptors run the O through him and he’s not even the best player on the team. It’s a mistake and they’ll figure it out this year 🙏

  9. You use facts but people will be in their feelings.
I like Pascal myself but to be fair… if we had a Giannis instead of Pascal we’d be NBA finals bound almost every year – in my opinion!

  10. Pretending that non-superstars are actual superstars isn't a victimless crime. The Raptors traded for Rudy Gay and gave him the ball like he was a superstar. That backfired. Trading him opened up a role for DeMar and Kyle. The Warriors incorrectly had identified Monta Ellis as their star of the future.. thankfully they saw Steph Curry's brilliance. Basketball is a team sport. Building an offense around Siakam if he's NOT the guy who can lead it undercuts the growth of guys like OG Anunoby and Scottie Barnes, both of whom have flashed brilliant potential that they can do much more. That's the point. This is a team sport. Fred's taking 20 shots or Siakam running every play down the stretch has an impact on the WHOLE TEAM. That's the POINT of this video.

  11. Pascal catch and shoot 3 from the corners is good. So hopefully Pascal can take more 3s from the corners and take less pull up 3s. Tatum is not a better defender than Pascal. No way.

  12. Pascal's my guy and there's nobody else on this current roster that I trust more than to lead us to victory. Perhaps if pascal was bent on choking the offense his way he could be closer compared to the Lukas the LeBrons the giannis' of the nba where their offenses quite frankly centers around those specific dudes. The Raptors starting unit probably wouldn't have all averaged a minimum of 15 ppg if pascal decided last year he wanted to add 5-6 more points to that average. Maybe we forget how unorthodox the Raptors like to run their lineups and offenses where they want everyone to be a threat to score idk but Pascal's aggression and shot attempts don't suggest to me that he's trying to grab the bull by the horns so to speak. Analytics clearly don't favor his impact for the team if he's just a top 30 player because he's a lot more to this team than people give him credit for.

  13. I knew you were gonna get bash for this one. Most people will think this is an anti-Pascal video. Don't worry pal, I'm not one of them, lol…..I get what you're saying. If the Raptors treat Pascal like a Superstar, and by that I mean giving the ball to him like a Lebron, Luca or a Kawhi, it would be a complete disaster for this team because he's definitely not those guys, lol. Many people seem to forget that unlike most team in the NBA, the Raptors are built truly like a team, with all working pieces. This is how they win consistently, and the reason why they're built this way is because no Superstars wanted to come here. This is their identity and to go away from this now would be a disaster, on that I can definitely agree with you……As far as the top 5 thing is concerned, the goal he sets are reasonable. He simply took the bar and raised it a little. It's highly unlikely but it's a definite possibility. You gotta admire a guy for raising the bar a little bit. Not too much, mind you, because that would be a sign of immaturity but a little bit? I'm Ok with that…..

  14. Spicy P, underrated as he is, made all NBA last season.
A few 'superstars' didn't make the playoffs. Whether he's top 15 or top 30, as long he leads the Raptors the right away and tunes out the noise, he is fine. One thing for sure, every opposing coach has to draw up plans to slow him down every time they play against him, and that's how all superstars are treated!

  15. HONESTLY PASCAL AND VANVLEET SHOOTING WAS BAD IN PRE SEASON. I HOP THE CHEMISTRY STILL INTACT 💯
    WE THE NORTH 🔥

  16. I just dont believe in Fred and Pascal to lead us to the finals unless we get a real superstar, I believe In the next year or so we should focus on implementing Barnes, OG and Precious in the offensive end more. Fred jacks up way too many shots at times he needs to run the PnR more and play make.

  17. If Pascal take Raps to the finals and win it, I wanna you to say sorry. Your video about Scottie "was going to flourish no matter which team drafted him", was very disappointed.
Ask Josh Jackson and some others.. You're a trojan horse who hate Pascal. Get the hell out. Bye bye….

  18. Pascal needs to do a few things better imo. Hit his free throws 85% at least. Hit 3 pt % closers to 40% and finish at the rim stronger. If he does this then I can see him as a top 10 player.

  19. I like Pascal a lot but I'm often disappointed and I think he's not been put in a position to succeed. He's used as a number 1 option which is not fair to him. I think Pascal should be compared to guys that are similar in size and play style. For example Paul George, Brandon Ingram, Jason Tatum, Tobias Harris, Kris Middleton. That would be a more fair indicator of how good he is. Hard to compare him to Centers like Embiid, Jokic who PER loves. I think it's noble he wants to be a top five player but I think he tops out at top 15. If Kahwi, PG and Zion played last year Pascal would not have made all nba. I see Pascal at around top 20 now ESPN ranks him 28 I think.
