Idk what qualifies as a fair shake. But this is how the game goes. The Showtime Lakers tanked and got their original coach fired according to Magic. Sometimes the head guy doesn't have what it takes and his players know it and sometimes the players are the ones are hurting the team. Time will tell what the real story is.
