The issue is not “Thib’s scheme”. These are miscommunications and mistakes.

Yup. This is what having a low IQ player like Randle playing a premium defensive position does to you. He takes “drop” coverage literally. He is constantly late on close outs. He miscommunicates what should be automatic switches on the side of the floor. Teams scout…its one of the reasons this keeps happening. They go at Randle for this exact reason. Couple that with Fournier playing big minutes with randle last year and into this year and its SHOCKING we were a top 15 defense last year.

  2. Thibs rotations have been bad over the years. And he is stubborn about a lot of things

But last night was bad defense by Randle.

Yeah I talk about poor 3 point defense and people tell me “it’s designed to funnel people to the paint… which is true but that doesn’t mean you should have constant wide open looks from the perimeter. Which is exactly what we do.

We don’t get out on the shooters. Ruins the whole scheme

Thibs is going to have a seizure watching this film

Thibs has been coach long enough to know these players suck at zone defense. If he’s not willing to change, then either the roster has to fully turn over or he has to go.

Part of being a coach is installing your system, but another part of being a coach is putting your players in positions to succeed. Thibs is great at the former; he’s terrible at the latter.

Some of the no man’s land is scheme though. Thibs approach is to collapse and favor the paint as a priority to avoid easy baskets. So I don’t blame players for favoring the interior and getting caught between helping in the paint or guarding the parameter. Randle and Obi both got caught in this dilemma. They probably know to run out but they feel pressure to hang in the paint longer than they should.

A big issue with losing Reggie and Taj is that I don’t feel we have a vocal leader out there on defense. All these guys should be talking to each other more, but man does it help to have at least one guy out there constantly talking and communicating.
