That was legitimately silly. He was so bad for two quarters then somehow ended up with a 30 point near triple double with great defence at the end of the third.
When Luka is not lazy, he actually does fine on defence. In that third quarter when the Mavs started rolling, his activity defensively when from 0 to 100 immediately.
The issue is he needs to bring that energy more often.

This was by far his worst half this year, followed by a 19point (8-9) quarter with 5 assists and really good defense.
Mavs now a pretty decent 11-5 when Luka scores 30.
(0-6 when he doesn’t, including the game he didn’t play.)

for all of his early season struggles shooting threes, he’s now got his % at exactly his career rate (33.7%)
I’m definitely hopeful he can finish the season higher than last year’s 35.3% (which is the highest mark of his career.) I think he’s taking slightly better quality looks now. not forcing as many extremely high difficulty threes.
Luka’s splits are now 33/9/9/61% TS. if the Mavs were 16-6 or something instead of 11-11 he’d be easy MVP front-runner. but hey, that’s what it comes down to. winning games. hopefully today is a turning point and the Mavs start taking care of business.
Today’s win wasn’t just about hitting a bunch of shots, there was tremendous energy on defense and on rebounding (the Knicks are a top rebounding team, and the Mavs outrebounded them by 5). And I think the offense was just smoother than it has been, better ball movement. Less of just relying on Luka to do everything.

He has leveled up this year. People aren’t paying attention his stats yet because his stats are always absurd, but as someone who watches the games, he’s better this year than he’s ever been and he’s making the team better too.
