Best Pacers team of all time?

Artest demanding a trade was the end of potentially the best Pacers teams of all time.

I was trying to debate whether or not this was the greatest Pacers team all-time. I feel like you really have three choices. The 90’s teams of Reggie, Jackson, Davis bros, etc. The early 2000’s teams with JO, Reggies, Artest, etc. And the most recent Eastern conference finals teams of George, Hibbert, West, etc.

Which would you take as the best Pacers team of all time? I think I’d go with the squad the year of the brawl in Detroit.

Agree, 2006. Fairly confident we would have won the O’Brien trophy that year

Probably one that actually has a championship, so the ABA-era.

Let’s get this straight. Artest did NOT demand a trade.

I worked in radio back then and got the opportunity to be in the same room with Artest a few times as he talked about various things after the brawl and later.

Artest had no filter. Personality-wise, he was a middle schooler who had no sense of smart PR. He said what he thought. If you asked a question, he gave you the real answer, not a coached safe answer.

In an interview, someone brought up the distraction of the brawl and trade rumors. They asked if the Pacers should trade him, and his answer was “yeah, I’m sure it’s been a distraction – maybe they should trade me.”

He didn’t ask for one. He was answering honestly in terms of what might be best for his team.

Everything went nuts. The media reacted like the media does, and the team freaked out and traded him.

In my opinion, the best response would have been for the team to say “yeah, that’s Ron being Ron. Read what he said. He’s not demanding a trade. We love Ron.” And move on.
