Jalen Green & Jabari Smith Jr. Strong Games As Houston Rockets Beat Depleted Phoenix Suns

Host Jackson Gatlin (@JTGatlin) talks discusses the Houston Rockets 111-97 win against a depleted Phoenix Suns team missing Devin Booker and Cam Johnson completely, and Deandre Ayton and Cam Payne not playing in the second half. Jalen Green finding ways to be efficient despite the outside shot not falling, Jabari Smith Jr. with a great first half, but then forgotten about in the second, Alperen Sengun being a monster on the glass, Kevin Porter Jr. struggling throughout the game, too many turnovers and an overall poor shooting night for Houston, and lastly Jackson explores the idea of “fake wins” and all the factors that add context to this game.

  1. Let's look at it this way. Cade Cunningham had a season ending injury. Scottie Barnes isn't as good as Jalen Green. That was the right draft choice. Orlando can't win at all with Paolo. What's his face is already injured too that OKC drafted. Jabari Smith is doing well. Tari Eason is doing well.

  2. Just give our big some more touches. Jabari deserve more than 5 shots. Sengun deserve to be feature more on the block.

  3. Is it just me or Alpy is not being creative with his vision this season compare to last season? Is the coach saying Sengun can't be a playmaker on the low post?. He seems to be in offensive more than being a short role playmaker on the post..maybe just me.

  4. I dont agree cp3 played and ayton played I think you feel this way because the domination it wasn't ever a close game

  5. These wins are a must for the confidence of our young core plus we already don't have rotation room for all of the young players on our team. If they can gel and get better, that's worth more than adding another piece, no matter how good that piece may be

  6. EG is getting the 3s and attempts that Jabari should be getting. Jabari I guess is technically a 4, but he is closer to a 3 than a 5. He’s more Durant than Claxton (not comparing skill just usage for best fit)

If the rockets put Smith at the 3 and Eason and the 4 then I think you will see Jabari really flourish offensively

Defense Eason and Smith can rotate positions if needed

But EG is keeping the Rockets from truly forming a new identity

  7. I didn't really 'enjoy' watching a game in which we were essentially comfortably up, wire-to-wire, against a 'superior' team, either. I can't stand watching KPJ run the offense and Daishen… all I'll say is that he needs to be "Nixed" from this roster.

Regarding the draft: it's impossible to hedge your bets this way… thinking the 9th win in 27 games could be catastrophic in terms of draft positioning. the worst teams have an 86% chance of NOT landing no. 1. Having a 9% or 11% chance by ending up 5th or 6th in the 'Race to the Bottom' versus 14% doesn't really light a fire for me that this team should suck more and give away these 'bad win' games. Maybe down the last stretch in the last handful of games, but not this early.

  8. Rockets beat the team they played. Wire to wire. The final score wasn’t indicative of how lopsided the game actually was. Is there room for improvement? Absolutely. But a good win to me.

  9. This episode was jus horrible. A bunch of complaining and excuses on a W. Rockets literally just beat a healthy suns team be happy they won when they were actually supposed to for a change

  10. Hey Jackson! Thanks for the great content as always. I had a thought I wanted to share. I really enjoy the more podcast-y episodes that explore in-depth and interesting questions, rankings, or hypotheticals. A few examples: long-term projections for current players using a D-A grading scale, or intriguing free agent trade targets in 2023, or proto-typical player archetypes to build a contender around Jalen, or your favorite 2023 draftees based on fit vs upside, or how the best Rockets teams ever (1995, 2018, etc) would fair against the current crop of teams, or trade value rankings for our players based on age, upside, and contract value (stole that from Bill S). Just a few fun examples 🙂

Idk if your larger audience would even be that interested in stuff like this, but I certainly would be. Also I know the season can be draining sometimes given how many games there are, so maybe episodes like this interspersed could be a way to break up the monotony of the regular season for you as well?

    Keep up the great work!

  11. Any win against a team that's over .500 is a good win. The first half was amazing but the second half got ugly I'd admit.

  12. I understand your point about the win. It would have been a better gauge of the team had the suns been fully healthy. But I just like seeing the team play well and even if it wasn’t against the suns’ best, they are still a well coached veteran team. I still view it as progress. And regarding the lottery, while it’s a good example of how the rockets can fall, it’s also a good example of how teams can jump up as well with the Heat jumping to #2. The flattened odds make luck a really big factor.

  13. It takes absolutely no intelligence to recognize the difference between a win and a loss SMH 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣 😂🤣😂🤣

  14. OMG THIS IS THE BEST SHOW EVER MY GOODNESS 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 MAN YOU MISSED YOUR CALLING MY FACE HURT…. HEY YOU WAS PRETTY SAD ABOUT THAT ONE 🤣‼️

  15. It's simple. Silas loves kpj for some reason and let's the dummy take all this ill-advised mid ranges and missed tech shots. It's clear as day that he's not even close to being a good pg which is why you see he and jalen green get all the touches. The moment he has the ball, he doesn't see anyone besides green and whoever the center is (fernando) it's always him or jalen taking the shots and the rest have to either create or try to get a rhythm. No surprise that jabari hasn't gotten a groove in scoring since his pg can't look for him for squat.
