NBA Renames Defensive Player of Year Award in Honor of Hakeem Olajuwon | Houston Rockets

The NBA announced that the Defensive Player of the Year award has been renamed The Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy in honor of the Hall of Famer and former Rocket [Image of the trophy is available here].

“I am honored to have the opportunity to celebrate the league’s best defensive player each year,” said Olajuwon. “Great basketball teams are defined by their ability to defend, with every great team connected by an elite defensive anchor.”

Olajuwon was a back-to-back winner of the Defensive Player of the Year award in 1992-93 and 1993-94 and was named All-Defensive First Team five times and Second Team four times. He is the NBA’s all-time leader in blocks (3,830) while ranking ninth in steals (2,162) and 14th in rebounding (13,748).

  1. Great way to commemorate an all-time talent; one that has melted his name into NBA archives and has inspired millions around the world (including me)

  2. This is great news, but somehow Dream still feels underappreciated, even though I'm sure it doesn't bother Hakeem. 🚀

  3. this is great but hakeem olajuwon is still criminally underrated in history….easily one of the top 10 basketball players to ever walk the face of the earth
