Tatum leads Giannis in first NBA MVP straw poll of the season – Tim Bontemps | NBA Today



Tim Bontemps joins Malika Andrews on NBA Today to talk about the findings of the first release of his 2022-23 NBA MVP straw poll which saw Jayson Tatum, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Luka Doncic, Stephen Curry and Nikola Jokic in the top 5.

Others receiving votes included Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant (sixth), Brooklyn Nets forward Kevin Durant (seventh), Williamson (eighth), Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker (ninth), Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid (10th), Cleveland Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell (11th), Los Angeles Lakers forward Anthony Davis (12th), and Gilgeous-Alexander, who, with a lone fifth-place vote, rounded out the poll in 13th place.

    Luka is MVP. Without him the Mavs are a lottery team. He has no real number 2 and he’s carrying his team to playoff contention.

    The fact that he's hardly given a mention in all these mvp discussions of late is preposterous.
    He's playing amazing basketball, held down the fort through all the turmoil surrounding the team to start the year…..

    Embiid has most 50 point games, had a quadruple double , and leads the league in scoring. Once joker won back to back mvps the award means nothing anyway.!

    Luka is so much more talented than Shaquille O'Neal, who mainly relied on his size and strength.

    Here's what we know Yokic won't win it this year… a lot of hall of fame players young and old think Joel should have won it last year. If Yokic wins this year.. you really ruin the award for good. Bcuz you'll be telling ppl he's like the best player ever.

    Embiid the best 2 way player in the league and the most unique player in the league. Leading the league in scoring, no mention of him. The Embiid hate is REAL

    Tatum not a top 10 player. Jokic still best player.
    Jokic is first in advanced stats Tatum is below 14th. 14th in PER, 17th BPM . That's all star level not MVP LEVEL.

    +10.0 is an all-time season (think peak Jordan or LeBron)
    +8.0 is an MVP season (think peak Dirk or peak Shaq)
    +6.0 is an all-NBA season
    +4.0 is in all-star consideration

    He does not impact winning. Celtics win without him, when they loose he is the reason.
    Entire team working for him to pad his stats.

    There is a huge gap between top 5 players and Tatum. You can make a solid case for another 5 players better than Tatum.

    Why you want a mediocre player MVP?
    When you got Giannis, Jokic, Curry, AD, Embiid … Tatum would look like a mediocre MVP at best.
    Even KD is better.

    Except scoring he is not top 5 in nothing.
    Giannis, Jokic better rebound better assist, Jokic, Curry insane scoring efficiency.
    All past MVPs were absolute leaders in advanced stats. LeBron was PER leader 6 times Tatum is currently 14th. Winshares 11th, BPM 17th. Jimmy Butler is better than Tatum
    There is absolutely nothing to have him in the conversation.
    You got 5 players 30+ PER player efficiency Tatum has 26, you got 5 players with BPM 10+ Tatum has 5. Jimmy Butler is better than Tatum

    3 international best player vs 2 American.. American will never give that again to the international players like Luka that more than far from Tatum… All around the world fans like Luka.. Americans Are Lukas haters…

    Where is lebron? Not even one vote? He is the FIRST to ever incorporate Westbrook since OKC and the Lakers have hands down been the best west team in the last 15 games.
