[Cato] My understanding is that the Mavericks would be very hesitant to trade Josh Green at this point. One person in the front office told me that he considered him the team’s third-most important player after Dončić and Dinwiddie.

> **Kai H. asks, “What is the current view of Josh Green in the front office? Is he being talked about in trade discussions, or is he viewed as a key piece?”**

> Dallas understands it must build a title-contending team around Dončić in the next couple seasons, and every non-Dončić player on the roster should be considered available in that pursuit. That said, my understanding is that the Mavericks would be very hesitant to trade Green at this point. One person in the front office told me that he considered him the team’s third-most important player after Dončić and Dinwiddie.

> In my opinion, Green isn’t a player who should be traded for anything other than a package for a legitimate star. And the chances are pretty slim that the Mavericks could build any package right now, even including Green, that would net them another star. That makes his future with the team fairly safe, at least for now. I’m more curious what type of extension Dallas might consider for him this coming summer.

Love Josh Green. Think he’s great and will continue to be great. Every time his ranking and importance in the Mavericks roster gets brought up it makes me sad.

They should be hesitant. Josh Green (along with Luka) is the Mavs only rotation player under the age of 27. They need more young talent around Luka not less.

This says more about Dallas than it does about Josh green

Cato’s right. The Mavs need dynamic offensive and defensive pieces (preferably young) to build that title contending team around Luka – Josh checks both of those boxes, which is rare. For that reason, I agree that Josh, Hardy, Spence, and Luka (to an extent Maxi cause of his defensive versatility) should be the ones off most trade tables. That may not be the core they want to roll with, but… it’s the best they can make out of what they have and it’s a stepping stone away from the rigid 3ND system Dallas has been creating around Luka since the Carlisle years.

Edit: and yes, as a DoeDoe fan, it pains me not to include DFS on the no-trade table…

Josh green has been great this year and it’s great to see him develop and already turn the narrative on some people who thought he was mid/bust, I hope and think he will continue to develop. That being said i don’t think josh green lands the mavs any trades for a star, their picks aren’t enticing as they’d be a late lottery-20s pick, and they have no players that teams would be going after. Maybe if a team goes on a fire sale (Wizards, Bulls, Raptors?) they might be able to put a package together for one of their desired players (Kuz, OG, Demar, Trent Jr etc) idk if they’d be considered stars but it’s the best they’d probably be able to do

    Grounds for termination

Mavs don’t have anyone important aside from Luka

This is peak insanity. Guys like Josh Green are low end rotation players in the NBA and are infinitely replaceable.

Casuals here who don’t regularly watch the Mavs are undervaluing Josh Green importance for us.

Green is playing at an-all NBA defense and I am measuring my words. He’s not flashy and not getting the respect he deserves from the refs , but he’s by far our best defender this season.

Besides that, he became a confident shooter+a great secondary playmaker when playing with Luka or Dinwiddie. He even became a really good finisher this season.

Green is 21 years old and has improved dramatically this season. He’s a perfect fit with Luka. Of course the FO will not trade him, unless for a legit star.

Josh Green’s growth has been better than expected. I see no reason he doesn’t continue this trajectory, especially after adding Kemba. The guy learns, and with veterans around him, we’re putting him in a good position to succeed.

People can say he’s not good enough for a star, and that’s fair. Mavs are betting on the future though. Something we haven’t done in a long, long time. Luka, Josh, and Hardy are the only young assets we have and we’d better cling to them.

Josh Green is an excellent young 3nD player, but he’s not the 3rd most important. That’s Dori imo.

  12. jakekerr

He’s essentially where Brunson was before the Phoenix series–a very good player with clear potential to be great with more opportunity. So I think the Mavs are looking at what happened with Brunson when they didn’t sign his extension and learning from their mistakes. There’s no real reason to sell Green low when he may end up being better than the player he’d be traded for.

  13. Aykutinho10

How many picks does Dallas have this year? Should they be tanking? The draft may be their only solution to find a second star.

  14. BobanForThree

ITT: a lot of people who haven’t watched much Josh Green (or much Mavs) this season. He’s a great defensive player and secondary playmaker, and when his 3 is falling he’s a perfect complementary player to Luka. And he’s 21 years old. I would not give him up for anything less than a near all-star level player. Not because Green is at that level, but because he’s so young and on a rookie-scale deal. I fully expect him to be a major part of our future, so we shouldn’t give him up unless it gives us a huge upgrade in the short term.

  15. Cark_Muban

I think this is the right approach right now. We need young talent. Luka is 23 and we have the 5th oldest team in the league. I dont think we should trade away young guys in favor of vets.

  16. Well atleast they can understand what they see which is nice lol. Also second paragraph basically sum up everything. We shouldnt trade him other than for players like idk Siakam etc. but there is no way we can get player like Siakam with our assets so Green is gonna be here in a long time.

Hopefully when he comes back he get that position from Thj

  17. NovaKash

This is the same Josh Green currently averaging 7ppg?

  18. NicClaxtonIsHotAF

Trading 1 of their only 2 young players with legit upside would be stupid

If anyone there gets traded I’d guess it’s DFS

  19. Lavine or Beal for Powell/Bullock/THJ/Green and every tradable pick/swap

  20. mrobin4850

Every team that gets Christian Wood has no interest in Christian Wood after a month

  21. qotsabama

This isn’t too hard to understand. Green has more value to Mavs than what he’d fetch in a trade. He’s 22 with high upside and plays great defense and has shot well

  22. allhailbarea

WE WILL NEVER TRADE RODDY, sry, i mean JOSH GREEN!!!

  23. Trading Josh right now would be a dumb decision. He’s finally gotten to the level where he looks like a useful role player and with his physical gifts there is still room for him to improve some more. I would be very surprised if he doesn’t continue rising in value.

I highly doubt he’ll ever be a star but he’s got the potential to be a really good role player and him and Hardy are about the only young talent the mavs have aside from Luka.

  24. MarkusHowardStan

Mavs better watch out for Knicks execs creeping on their games

  25. Hurricanemasta

Man, you listen to the Mavs fans on here and you’d think they were leading the West with their All-Defense bench guys and great Tim Hardaway contracts and not a .500 team…

Not trying to be an asshole to the Mavs fanbase out there but there’s a reason these conversations are happening. The Mavs are underachieving, and so are most of their players. They don’t have a ton of great contracts, and if Spencer Dinwiddie and Josh Green are your number 2 and 3 most important players, you need to do something with your roster.

  26. No-Departure7801

Dinwiddie rightly being piece number two sucks

  27. He’s a pretty great player but this is falling up the ladder lmao

  28. He has the potential to be the 2nd most important player on this roster in a year or two. It doesn’t mean he will be, but the potential is there.

  29. whiteboyfrmdao

And this is why Dallas ain’t building a serious team around Luka any time soon. Green is a decent player with potential, but you don’t have years to wait for him to come that “star” you think he can be. Luka has 2/3 years left max.

  30. llamahumper

Why does it always seem like there is a josh green in the nba?

  31. shaheedmalik

Green is getting better, but Wood is way more important.
