.SACRAMENTO, Calif. — In the last NBA game of the 2022 year at Golden 1 Center, the Sacramento Kings salvaged their 6-game homestand with a slim 126-125 conquest over the visiting Utah Jazz on Dec. 30. 🎙
Domantas Sabonis continues making his All-Star selection statement. Playing through a thumb injury, Sabonis managed to put up 28 points, pull down 11 rebounds, and drop eight dimes for the Kings (19-15, 11-7 at G1C).🎙
In 37 minutes, the 6-foot-10 forward made all 12 of his shots from the field, made both 3-pointers, and sank two of three shots from the free-throw line to help the Kings complete a 3-3 record on their home court. 🎙
Utah Jazz star Lauri Markkanen knows all about Sabonis. He played games against him numerous times when he was playing for the Chicago Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers when Sabonis was in Indiana. 🎙
“He’s been great. Obviously having a great year, leading the league in rebounds and he’s been an All-Star before for a reason,” Markkanen. “He’s playing great basketball, he can do a little bit of everything. Rebounding, pushing, facilitating, he’s a really good passer and he can score the ball too.”
In the second game where the Kings won by one point, Kevin Huerter did his job and he did it well. He led Sacramento with 30 points, making six of 10 shots beyond the arc. 🎙
Thanks to a needed offensive rebound from Harrison Barnes and a pass by rookie Keegan Murray, Huerter also made the game-winning basket to close out the game with a 25-foot 3-point basket with nine seconds left to play. The Kings trailed 125-123 before the big play. Huerter scored 15 points in the final frame.🎙
“I just thought our ability to crush the glass and turn any offensive rebound we got into points was big,” Kings head coach Mike Brown said. “The biggest one or two offensive rebounds was right before Kevin’s 3. So, it’s just a tremendous job hitting the glass tonight and coming up with timely offensive rebounds that helped us either stay in the game or B, take the lead for good.”
De’Aaron Fox made an All-Star declaration as well. He had 24 points and 10 assists for the Kings, including 11 points in the fourth quarter. The Kings made 50 of 90 shots from the field (55.6%).🎙
The Kings were up by eight points when Huerter scored on a layup with 3:24 remaining. The Jazz went on a 13-4 run to lead by three on a running 12-foot shot by Markkanen but Huerter and the Kings finished up the game with a 5-1 scoring advantage to seal the victory. 🎙
“I felt like we had to leave there with four-plus or with two minutes to go and we kind of gave it away,” Sabonis said. But the fact that everybody fought on that last possession, I don’t know how many people (rebounded the) ball. And then Kevin makes that 3 to go up…it just shows that we don’t give up, we just keep fighting.”
Markkanen led the Jazz (19-19) with 36 points and five rebounds in 34 minutes. Jordan Clarkson added 25 points, four rebounds, and nine assists while Mike Conley had 17 points, two rebounds, and eight assists.🎙
Markkanen, also in the All-Star conversation for the Western Conference, said he is looking forward to seeing the Kings again on Jan. 3 in Salt Lake City. He is up for the challenge. 🎙
“It’s fun to play against those guys. Wish we could have come up with the win, but we’ll get another chance at them in a couple of days,” Markkanen said with a smile. 🎙
After a two-game absence, Mike Brown returned from the NBA’s health and safety protocols.🎙
The Kings will play the next two games on the road against the Memphis Grizzlies on New Year’s Day and the Utah Jazz on Jan. 3, 2023.🎙
