Warriors’ Joe Lacob on the possibility of a monster payroll: The trade deadline is coming up, we’ll see if there’s a way we can improve our team, and if we can obviously improve our financial situation going forward, we would love to do that. But not at the sacrifice of being able to win.

TL;DR – no limit as long as they are winning? Wiseman likely going to stay with the team as well.

Interesting notes:

– Entire front office and coaching staff wanted James Wiseman in 2020 draft. It was a universal decision

– Wants Klay, Dray and Steph to retire as Warriors, but NOT at expense of the team/payroll. Klay and Dray will have to take sacrifices

– Working really hard on Bob Myers contract extension. Myers is currently already a top 3 most paid GM in the league. Has already been offered 3 extension offers but Myers declined them. However, Lacob said he expects Bob to be back. Its just part of negotiating.

– Steve Kerr’s contract is up in Summer of 2024. No details on extension

So is Lacob now prepared to say he could allow the number to explode to $450 million or more next season in order to keep going for titles?

“It’s not possible without losing quite a bit of money at the bottom line, let’s put it that way,” Lacob said on my podcast earlier this week. “I did say that (it was impossible). And it is from a business perspective an almost insane thing to even consider. But I think we’re going to have to wait and see, because the truth is, winning matters. And I want to win another championship. We want to win another championship this year, and I’ll probably say it at the end of this year too.” …

“And right now, we’re in the present and we’re trying to win. And I think we’ve got a good shot to do that. I think we’re coming together. And the trade deadline is coming up, we’ll see if there’s a way we can improve our team, and if we can obviously improve our financial situation going forward, we would love to do that. But not at the sacrifice of being able to win.”

Well they aren’t helping their cap situation with trading Dray or Klay, so I don’t think that part is going to happen. Wiseman helps some but losing him for an expiring or just a dump will come around and bite you next season.

This is why Klay feeling a certain way. This an all-in, Champs-or-bust payroll. There is no way you keep this thing going for a play in spot.

Makes sense! Glad we got an owner that values winning! Seems like as long as we’re in contention, we won’t make Laker level moves like trading away players for a bag of chips.

  5. This is what I was saying over the summer when we were debating it here. If the team is really good and winning, Lacob could be talked into that massive tax bill.

The obvious problem is the team hasn’t been good enough to justify that so far. There’s a real risk that if we’re still a 9th seed in a month, he tells Bob to look for cost saving moves at the deadline. Could also happen over the summer, when Poole’s deal becomes easily tradeable, but I can’t see Lacob parting with Poole to preserve an aging non-contending core.

I highly doubt Draymond is taking a pay cut as he has already taken one during the KD GSW era iirc. Unfortunately it seems like he’ll be the one out the door. Hopefully this isn’t the case, but at the end of the day the sport is a business.
