[Russo] Donovan Mitchell on the backlash he would face as a black man in Utah: “It’s not every fan; it’s not everybody. But there are things that I see and here that I didn’t bring up in the interview, and I didn’t want to bring up because I knew how much it would get a reaction on social media”

> In a recent interview with Marc Spears for Andscape, Mitchell spoke of how draining it had been as a Black man to receive pushback on attempts to progress conversations about racial inequality. And social media only worsened that feeling.

> “It’s not every fan; it’s not everybody,” Mitchell reiterated. “But there are things that I see and here that I didn’t bring up in the interview, and I didn’t want to bring up because I knew how much it would get a reaction on social media.”

Just waiting to hear white Utah fans on social media try to tell him that he is wrong about his own experiences that he experienced.

He gets to get out of Utah, and Utah gets Lauri Markkanen and Walker Kessler to root for. Everyone wins!

As a white mormon who’s attended NBA games in many states, including Utah, I think the perception about racism in Utah is fair and accurate.

We can’t fix it if we won’t even admit it. There is a history of racism in mormonism. Combine that with SLC suburbs that are 85%+ white, and of course there’s going to be systemic racism. Lets be real with ourselves and get to work on making things better.

Give New Orleans their name back, Utah.

Utahn here, I wish he would call out the racism he has seen here more, too many people here act like it’s not a problem anymore and we somehow completely killed racism in the 90s or some shit. In reality they are just blinded to it. Like the damn robots from Westworld, “doesn’t look like anything to me”.

Lol I referenced this just yesterday and was downvoted. I legitimately think based on exclusively location Utah is probably a bottom 3 place that most people in the NBA would want to play.

And Markannen is thriving in the motherland, looks like a win-win

Jazz fans ignoring this thread like the plague lmaoooo

they always get so defensive when anyone brings up the fact that they’re one of the most racist NBA cities in the league

2023 and people are still racists.

We all have to realize we are just people living in one planet.

Why can’t we all just get along and have fun in life man.

    Fucking hell man.

  12. My take is that racism here in Utah is mostly out of ignorance. People don’t see it so they think it doesn’t exist. Since the systemic racism isn’t something that they specifically asked for and often don’t even realize exists, they get defensive and want to attack the messenger.

Not saying it’s right, but it kind of makes sense if you were raised here and have rarely heard a racist comment growing up. It’s easy as a white person to just assume it doesn’t exist if you don’t ever see it. When I was younger I really didn’t think people here were racist, but now I realize it’s a systemic, ignorance issue more than anything and it’s really hard to get people to recognize that without them feeling unjustly attacked.

  13. Can’t believe Caris and the refs blew the game for us yesterday lol

Wasn’t it Utah where Westbrook had issues with racist fans?

  15. I am a resident of Utah and a fan of the Jazz. I can attest that the racism here is fucking terrible. It’s such a horrible excuse to say you “haven’t experienced racism as a white person.” As a white person myself, you see it so often.
My black friends share similar experiences of racism growing up here and it’s so disgusting. Often, members of the LDS church, who are supposed to follow teachings of Jesus, will be openly racist and say the N-word to their friends, and even worse, members of the black community, and then say, “there isn’t a racism problem in Utah!”
It’s embarrassing to be a Utah Jazz fan sometimes. Lots of Jazz fans said “good riddance!” when he was traded. I’m glad he got such a seemingly well reception coming back to play here. He deserves a fan base that respects him and truly supports him. He seems like such a nice and down to earth guy. Honestly, I’m happy he got out of here. I hope Cleveland fans are treating him well.

Jazz fans, feel free to come to our meetings every Sunday at 3:00 where we discuss not brigading posts that criticize your fan base and acknowledging issues within your communities.
