Luka’s defense on this subreddit (and with Mavs fans in general) is a pretty interesting topic IMO. Nationally, it doesn’t matter as people say he’s one of the worst defender no matter what they see.
On here, I see so many varying opinions. He’s above average, average, below average, trash, etc.
Personally, I think Luka is a below average defender primarily due to his lack of effort. He gives up way too easily on-ball and stops sliding his feet way too fast. And it leads to our switch heavy defense scrambling around rotating. He’s a nightmare to watch vs small/quick guards (Mitchell/Fox for example). At the end of the day, our switch-heavy defense is for Luka’s benefit. And it’s fine. He’s stopped ball-watching on D this year compared to previous years though and is rotating fine. He totally can be a purely average defender and probably above average due to his size if he tries. Cause that’s 70% of being a good defender, just staying locked in.
As mentioned above, this year his off-ball D has been better than ever, especially in the halfcourt and in the 4th quarter IMO. He’s reading passing lanes better than ever which is why he’s averaging ~2 steals a game. He’s a nice post defender due to his size.
Would like to see a considerable amount of effort on-ball vs the better players imo. Does that happen if he gets more help to reduce his offensive burden or not? No idea. Time will tell.

Well yea he is a bad team defender (slow feet and lazy) but if you guys think we lost that game because of Doncic’s bad defense idk what to tell you. Wood-Thj basically terrible defenders. Spencer is average and Reggie is decent. Its not like we are Hawks who put Capela, DJM, Hunter around Luka and him being bad on defence screwing us. Same goes for Harden (Capela, Tucker, Ariza, Eric Gordon)
If you give that Rockets team to Luka (even without Chris Paul) we would be big contender and i can easily see us winning a championship.
Man Luka isnt good defender but people overrate how his defence making us bad lol.
